Great news: GM will still pay lobbyists in DC

Think of the next $30 billion investment in General Motors as an inside-the-Beltway stimulus package. By keeping the automaker afloat, Barack Obama hopes to save jobs, and he will … especially on K Street, whose lobbying practices earned the firms there nothing but scorn from Candidate Obama:
General Motors will continue its multimillion-dollar lobbying operation in Washington, even after the federal government takes ownership of it. The automaker may even maintain its high-dollar lobbying contracts with some of the wealthiest and most influential K Street firms.
“We believe we have an obligation to remain engaged at the federal and state levels,” General Motors stated in an e-mail after President Barack Obama announced his plan for the federal takeover of the carmaker, “and to have our voice heard in the policymaking process.”
As a result, some of the jobs that the White House will save with this unprecedented nationalization could be on K Street in downtown D.C., rather than in Detroit.
GM spent $13.1 on lobbying in 2008. In the first quarter of this year, while surviving on federal bailout money, the company’s lobbying tab was $2.8 million.
Just to make this clear, lobbying is a Constitutionally-guaranteed right. The First Amendment explicitly protects the process of petitioning the government for redress of grievances, which is exactly what lobbying does. It allows people to aggregate for better effectiveness on issues in order to make their voices heard, and lobbying firms fill a free-market function by making people more effective at doing it. Lobbying in and of itself is not evil, nor is it inherently corrupt, although it can certainly lead to corruption when politicians sell themselves for political favors and fundraising.
All that said, Government Motors is right now running off of the taxpayer dime. If it is illegitimate for TARP recipients to hold business in Las Vegas, as Barack Obama insisted not long ago, then perhaps the same can be said for spending millions of dollars from the nation’s Treasury to attempt to influence lawmakers. The money showered on K Street will eventually get used for fundraisers for the very politicians who approved the bailout of GM, making this in effect a positive-reinforcement loop for corporatism.
Obama spent a lot of time unfairly demonizing lobbyists on the campaign trail, promising to keep them out of government, a pledge he has repeatedly broken. Why is he so silent on a government-owned enterprise spending millions on lobbyists now?

What’s the point? Our gubmint and GM are pretty much humping each other at the moment…
I’m sure this will give us the jobs Barry promised.

Imagine that….the only thing that’s changed is american consumers who chose another option than GM now get to help foot the bill regardless…
sven10077 on June 3, 2009 at 9:32 AM
So, explain this to me. The owners of GM are going to lobby the owners of GM?

Because NOW it’s taxpayer money being used to benefit Ogabe, that’s why.

In other GM news, Fritz Henderson says that “as a private company” GM will no longer be subject to the same financial disclosure rules as other companies — that it will be more “discrete” (discreet? I can’t remember)
But per this story, what do they have left to lobby for? Law to take down all their competitors with them?
BigD on June 3, 2009 at 9:34 AM
I think we could have spent this money in a much better way.
therightscoop on June 3, 2009 at 9:35 AM
Bingo!
It’s one humongous circle jerk.
fogw on June 3, 2009 at 9:35 AM
The government is not allowed to Lobby itself.
Or is that only for House and Senate members? The Executive Branch can still lobby itself?
This whole GM thing makes me sick. The GM CFO who was making the rounds of every possible Cable Network was nauseating in his fawning for the Obama Administration, with a small aside of ‘thanks’ to the American taxpayer.

Where’s the GOP been during all this GM nonsense?
Worrying about losing UAW votes?
BuckeyeSam on June 3, 2009 at 9:42 AM
we need to be more active in our communities about our freedom from govt. ideas.
i just read on a lefty Virginia blog that the right still hasn’t caught on that bambi is president.
we really need to be pro-active.
i’m sorry, this is O/T

our members of Congress are not part of the solution (at least most of them).
kelley in virginia on June 3, 2009 at 9:43 AM
It works like this; the UAW lobbyists will strong arm themselves for a sweeter deal thereby wringing more billions from the “government” before they go bankrupt for the upteenth time thereby saving thousands of jobs.
mr1216 on June 3, 2009 at 9:44 AM
Exactly!
and
Exactly!
Not only that, but the government-owned company will support the unions, who will then turn around and donate millions to the politicians who are keeping them alive.
Couldn’t this be investigated as money laundering?

angryed on June 3, 2009 at 9:48 AM
I would think it would lead to FEWER jobs. Lobbying only takes one person now.
“I want more money.”
“How much do I want?”
“I want lots.”
“I guess so, okay.”
“Wow, I strike a hard bargain.”
“Yes, I’m like that.”
Daggett on June 3, 2009 at 9:48 AM
First of all the GOP never had the UAW vote! Where have you been! Second they control nothing and cannot stop a thing!
sargentj on June 3, 2009 at 9:50 AM
I vote we send Morrissey to D.C. to lobby for a stimulus package that fights against lobbyist lobbying any government owned institutions—a job that should be reserved to our elected representatives that are sent to D.C. for this exact same purpose, (but not loaded with money and perks).

Profit opportunities in the Age of Obama:
Lobbying the State
Manufacture of specialized paper used in government checks.
Pawn Shops
Repo man
Unicorn feed sales and production
Being the guy in charge of firing people at any private company.
Big Government stoogery of any/all kinds
Community Organizing (Gov funded)
Nuke and missile tech sales to tyrants
Gun sales (could be temporary bump up)
Conservative punditry (could be temporary bump up)

I honestly believe we are headed for cars with names like Hope and Change. And they’ll sport spiffy little Obama logos.

Well, it will make it easier to locate the morons who think Obama is “cooltown”.

The whole system is corrupt to the very core. The only question left in my mind is will we die out slowly and quietly like the Romans or will we have a renaissance at some point.

Can our government get any more tin-pan, third world? Our federal government has grown to a point of complete and utter tyranny.
Tragically – this cannot continue and it will break. There is no free lunch or golden goose. The overwheming contempt in which I hold our federal government for doing this is unmeasurable. Most of these people belong in jail, not in charge. And yet everyday, post after post, people continue to bicker over the best way to get the Republican scoundrel/criminals back in power – as if the past eight years we had a decent and Constitutionally restrained federal government.
When is the Revolution going to start?

This, coupled with GM & UAW campaign contributions, will essentially be the Executive branch bribing the Legislative.
Seems like the Judicial should cut this off, or at least get their piece of the pie, no?

Quietly handing out the rope, with which the Democrats seem to be merrily hanging themselves.
People are slowly catching on. Last night, even Jon Stewart delivered a stinging diatribe about Obama and GM.

Hear hear! If anyone is waiting for the GOP, they will be waiting a long time. Everyone admits BHO (it’s okay to use that middle initial again) is busting the Constitution to pieces. No one will stop him. We sit here and discuss it all day but have no one with any power on our side.

katablog.com on June 3, 2009 at 10:26 AM
Of course they will still lobby. How else to move the taxpayer money into the hands of congressmen?
Vashta.Nerada on June 3, 2009 at 10:30 AM
It’s just an indication that the tide of public opinion will turn against Obama eventually. If even hard lefties are being forced to admit the idiocy of the taxpayers being forced to bail out a company, which then went bankrupt 6 months later anyway, and then were forced to buy the bankrupt company… Well, it’s just a hopeful sign to me that the people may be in the mood to give some congressional seats back to Republicans in 2010, and maybe even the White House in 2012.

A serious question for the legal eagles here at HA:
GM has (had?) various lawsuits or claims against the federal government. Are they still valid? Is there a case for conflict of interest?
Also, in the event that a consumer brings a product liability suit against GM for a defective product (say, a wrongful death), are we, the taxpayer, liable for any monetary award? More importantly, can you sue the US government (as owner) in this circumstance?
What about lawsuits filed against GM prior to the bankruptcy filing? Are they still valid?
BobMbx on June 3, 2009 at 10:55 AM
I don’t think it’s legally possible to sue yourself.

Obama orders Chrysler to halve it’s advertising budget, but makes no changes to GM’s lobbying budget, despite the fact that he campaigned against such lobbying.
Now I know that we have entered bizarro world.

nottakingsides on June 3, 2009 at 11:43 AM
I wouldn’t complain too loudly … since this is taxpayer money, think of this as taxpayers lobbying for the government to allow GM to continue making real cars, as opposed to the bubble cars that we are all going to be forced into if Obama gets his way. If the lobbyists don’t successfully
buy offpersuade congressmen that the people don’t want putt-putt cars, we’ll all be riding around on lawn mowers.Voice of Reason on June 3, 2009 at 11:46 AM
GM also has a $400,000 PAC. Not the biggest in the world, but sizable. And remember, John Dingell’s wife is one of the senior people in GM’s Washington office.
GMAC is apparently keeping its lobbyist too, and it spent over $5 million last year on lobbying, as the government took a 35% share of it. So now all the private banks are competing with a largely government-owned GMAC, which can offer subsidized, artificially low interest rates to buyers of government-subsidized GM and Chrysler cars, and can still lobby the Administration and Congress for even more bailouts and other favorable terms to keep it afloat. This is insane.
If I’m Toyota or Honda, I’m going straight to the WTO to file an unfair trade complaint on this. How are they supposed to compete fairly against Government Motors and GMAC?
rockmom on June 3, 2009 at 11:46 AM
Question?
Shouldn’t this GM bailout crapola been run thru Congress or is this the first official act of one of our many Czar’s?
Will Barry use these GM jobs as jobs created by him?
Government Motors another welfare program brought to you by Barry and company.
Knucklehead on June 3, 2009 at 11:50 AM
Apparently not, as long as the money is coming out of the original TARP authorization the Administration does not have to go back to Congress. Presumably someone on Capitol Hill will have the balls to insist on some oversight hearings, but I wouldn’t bet on it for a while.

Bob Moss Associates (Bob Moss)
Baker & McKenzie (Steven Becker)
Covington and Burling (Stuart Eizenstat, Rod DeArment, Michael Nonaka)

Greenberg Traurig (Nancy Taylor, Holly Feraci, Nan North)
Jennings Policy Strategies (Christoper Jennings, Katherine Hayes)

Richetti Inc. (Jeff Richetti)
The Duberstein Group (Ken Duberstein, Michael Berman, Steven Champlin, Brian Griffin, Eric Ueland, Marti Thomas, Daniel Meyer)

Nope. Stewart actually attacked Obama/the federal government for giving GM $20 billion and then encouraging GM to go bankrupt 6 months later. Stewart’s words: “We could have done that for FREE!” He then went on to mock Obama’s proud declaration that we done bought ourselves a car company by pointing out the stupidity of buying a miserably failed company. Stewart said something like, “So, for just $30 billion more, we got part-ownership of . . . a company worth negative $90 billion.” Stewart then begged Obama to consider buying us a company that’s actually profitable instead of all these crapola companies, which he compared to “buying stuff out of the bargain bin – you know, with the one-legged Barbie dolls and stuff like that.” Credit where credit is due – he cut to the heart of it and laid it right at Obama’s feet.
