Video: Michael Moore pretty darned excited about owning a car company
posted at 9:22 pm on June 2, 2009 by Allahpundit
Actually, no. What he’s excited about is the left having acquired a massive labor force which it can use to serve whatever leftist end it wishes. To hell with General Motors as a car company; let’s shift to a full-blown wartime command economy footing and force GM to start churning out bullet trains and solar panels and green energy devices and everything else under the Democrats’ Christmas tree. Americans may love their cars, but the environment doesn’t. So they’ll simply have to go:
For the time being, have some factories build hybrid or all-electric cars (and batteries). It will take a few years for people to get used to the new ways to transport ourselves, so if we’re going to have automobiles, let’s have kinder, gentler ones. We can be building these next month (do not believe anyone who tells you it will take years to retool the factories — that simply isn’t true).
No word on where this will leave GM’s competitors; presumably they’ll have to be shut down or seized in due course and reoriented for the sake of Mother Nature. And to pay for it? A new two-dollar tax on gasoline, which won’t at all have systemic economic effects as businesses pass their new transportation costs on to consumers. What could go wrong?
If Olby — a firm opponent of expansive executive power while Bush was in office — sees any pitfalls or slippery slopes in this stroke of genius, he keeps it to himself.

IF we’re going to have automobiles? Where does Michael Moore get off being holier-than-thou about transportation? The man clearly hasn’t walked more than 10 ft in his life. I’m guessing he’s one of those people – like me – who gets in his car to go to a corner store less than 2 blocks away.

But of course. Presidents (Republican ones at least) will misuse and abuse their national security powers but heck, running car industries and the banking institutions and vast amounts of our economy? They’ll never abuse that authority.
No they won’t. Why worry?

You know………..
………. I noticed that Moore’s “pie in the sky” ideology about what the company should be doing building little green cars, bullet trains, and buses that run on farts,
never brings into the calculations of why GM actually failed with government over regulation, the UAW contracts that paid hundreds of thousands not to work, top dollar pensions, and turned GM into a health care company………..
Why is that……..?

Two things:
A. The reason trains & buses don’t work well here is- we’re a big country. People live away from work, and cars are the best way to get around. Moore’s plan won’t work.
B. Planned Obsolescence actually referred to Sloan’s tactic for GM to overtake Ford by introducing new models while Henry Ford kept making the same old car every year. Worked pretty well, but was more about model years than planning shorter lifespans for cars.

Anyone notice the chiron under MM’s 4th chin? (more chins than a chin-nevermind) It says ‘death of an icon’. MM is no icon to me, but he is to some.
And why do people romanticize the American automobile companies? They have built crap for decades. It wasn’t until Japan came along and showed us that you could own a car that ran for several hundred thousand miles with little maintenance and repair costs. The UAW made unsustainable demands leeching the American automakers to death.
I’d love to see a genuine American company making automobiles that people want to buy. Cars made by non-union labor where merit is rewarded and poor performance is not rewarded.
Until then I’ll drive my Acura built in Japan. 120k and nothing but oil changes, tires, and windshield wipers.

Bishop on June 2, 2009 at 9:54 PM
It’s interesting to see the reactions to GM, few of them charitable. Here it’s about why it wasn’t allowed to die sooner and without governmental intervention (and money). Among the left, it’s a whole other story. People in S.F. are talking about how GM deserves to die for its sins of a half-century ago, when it helped rip up the public transportation infrastructure of various cities, trolleys removed to make room for more cars (on shared thoroughfares) and buildings (on private thoroughfares). And of course there’s Moore, who thought GM could afford some extra costs in his initial film, said “good riddance” a few weeks ago, and now acts like a kid in a candy store (with a token nod for laid-off auto workers, the very demographic that made him famous to begin with).
Stay tuned to the very end for the kind of great judgment the Olbermann family has had for generations, from the great-grandfather who refused stock in GM to Keith who doesn’t seem to be aware of concepts like dividends and re-balancing portfolios.

Diversity, in and of itself, is, I suppose, a nice idea in many contexts. But in those contexts where merit really does matter, diversity, for the sake only of diversity, is idiocy.
Four months in and this experiment in diversity is a frightening trainwreck.
McCain was not a great candidate, but he’s looking awfully good from where I sit. I just hope the GOP can derail Obama’s plans for health-care and cap-and-trade with a view towards a GOP comeback in 2010.

theboss on June 2, 2009 at 11:07 PM
What, it won’t succeed because you’ll refuse to buy GM products even when their cars are superior to the competition? Perhaps you should start banking in China since all the major American banks took bailout money.
Betting against the success of a company that employees tens of thousands of Americans and ensures the relevancy of America’s manufacturing base isn’t a great idea. Once you realize how much power China has attained in the next ten years, you won’t be whining about the bailout. If GM had fallen, its assets would be have been acquired by a mix of Chinese companies and you’d see Great Wall Motors emerge. For the time being, if you’re hot for Chinese, Hummer is the only option.
I’m not crazy about this bailout, but if a bailout had to occur, this one at least appears to be structured and executed in the right way to give GM a real shot at long-term success. But give Americans a chance. Betting against BofA, Citi, or Wells Fargo because they took government money wouldn’t be a smart move either.
bayam on June 2, 2009 at 11:08 PM
That’s exactly why I would go with Ford. America’s only CHANCE… is to feed the companies that are still owned by the private market.
I will NOT reward socialism and lose the free market at the expense of a few thousand employees.
It’s a hard lesson and sounds cold but it’s losing the battle and winning the war strategy we need.
The problem with your idea is you have lost sight of the long range effects and are thinking short term.
That is a killer and unfortunately too many Americans have adopted the quick fix mentality.

Fare enough,
we may be in a world war soon enough.
TheSitRep on June 2, 2009 at 11:36 PM
Well, there’s no viable American auto industry if GM fails because the entire infrastructure collapses (ie parts suppliers), and Ford would go down with it. No GM, no Ford or any other American automaker.
Not so sure about the socialist rant- this isn’t a case of a government nationalizing an industry for purely philosophical reasons. It’s more like the only way the entire auto industry in this country has a fighting chance. The government could have given GM all the money and taken no equity in return- but that would mean taxpayers- you and me- would never get our money back.
Hopefully it will turn into a profitable investment, like TARP. The largest banks are already starting to repay their TARP funds through money raised via bond and stock issuances, with major fees and interest added to the bill of course. And taxpayers will turn a nice profit. In a few years, no one will be complaining about socialist banks, but realize that it prevented the banking system from collapse with minimal long-term pain. A little perspective might help.
bayam on June 2, 2009 at 11:37 PM
bayam on June 2, 2009 at 11:37 PM
You need to wake up and smell the roses. Every business that took TARP money is trying to give it back for good reason. Government is not the answer; Government is the problem. Show me one single business-program the government has run successfully. Show me one single State that has been run by Democrats for the past decade or longer, that is successful.
Come on now Bayam, step up to the plate and show us some facts to back your bullshit up with. Wake up man!

Keemo on June 2, 2009 at 11:53 PM
Dear Keemo…
Most experts, including harsh government critics like Jim Cramer, agree that TARP did prevent the entire banking system from collapse. Those who say that such a danger never presented itself were not on the inside and have no idea what occurred to our financial system over the last 6 months. This wasn’t simply a Democrat – Obama policy, it was initiated by Bush, Cheney, and Wall Street. And it worked very well, preventing the level of pain that hit Asia in the prior decade under similar circumstances of widespread panic.
You seem to have a very simplistic understanding of the world.
bayam on June 2, 2009 at 11:53 PM
Mike Moore is the FACE of the DNC. This idiot actually wants the closed factories to manufacture wind mills. Why would anyone hire union workers to do anything if they had the choice to hire normal people.

Ford had foresight and saw the collapse coming and did what they had to do to come up with the capital to stay afloat.
I think we may need to think about doing this with local businesses too. Pour our money into conservative owned businesses if possible. Especially with what happen to the car dealerships.
It may come down to a BUY RED campaign.
katy on June 3, 2009 at 12:03 AM
bayam on June 2, 2009 at 11:53 PM
Wow, that’s it…
Show us one single successful State that has been under Liberal rule for the past decade or longer.
Bush was in on the TARP bullshit, that is a fact. Cheney was not in favor of the TARP program that I’m aware of. The fact the Bush was in on the deal doesn’t make the deal good for America in my view. Bush protected our homeland, for that I’m most grateful. Bush was also very much a moderate in many ways, even swayed into Liberal territory with programs such as no child left behind, as well as the socialized drug program. For those reasons I’m very disappointed in Bush.
Government is the problem, forget about Republican vs Democrat!
Keemo on June 3, 2009 at 12:03 AM
Search away Bayam; every State that has been under strict Democrat rule is in deep deep deep trouble. Democrats suck at running anything. The real problem today, is that Republicans almost suck as bad as Democrats at running anything. Too much corruption, pay backs, ego’s, greed…
Keemo on June 3, 2009 at 12:09 AM
One things for sure in this home… We don’t buy anything (not one penny) from anything Union. Nada, absolutely NADA from this point forward. Unions are as corrupt as the Democrat party; one in the same.
