Obama: Oil-rich nation’s nuclear-power aspirations “legitimate”

posted at 12:14 pm on June 2, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

President Obama told the BBC in an interview that he views Iran’s nuclear-power ambitions as “legitimate,” as long as they prove that the program won’t produce nuclear weapons.  The softball clearly aims to generate some diplomatic thaw within Tehran, but it ignores a rather large fact — and that fact is rather dispositive towards Iran’s intentions:

President Barack Obama suggested that Iran may have some right to nuclear energy _ provided it proves by the end of the year that its aspirations are peaceful.

In a BBC interview broadcast Tuesday, he also restated plans to pursue direct diplomacy with Tehran to encourage it set aside any ambitions for nuclear weapons it might harbor.

Iran has insisted its nuclear program is aimed at generating electricity. But the U.S. and other Western governments accuse Tehran of seeking atomic weapons.

“What I do believe is that Iran has legitimate energy concerns, legitimate aspirations,” Obama said, adding that the international community also “has a very real interest” in preventing a nuclear arms race.

The president has indicated a willingness to seek deeper international sanctions against Tehran if it does not respond positively to U.S. attempts to open negotiations on its nuclear program. Obama has said Tehran has until the end of the year to show it wants to engage with Washington.

The inconvenient fact? Iran has all the resources it needs for energy production now.  In fact, with the money they’ve spent on nuclear technology, they could have built oil refineries that would have reduced or eliminated their depending on imports for gasoline, producing it themselves from their own abundant supply.  Absent sanctions, Iran could make a mint each year off of oil revenues and produce all the energy they need for domestic consumption, too.

So why do they pursue nuclear power?  They want it for something other than energy production, although they’ll take that, too. Since they also spend a lot of money testing and launching rockets these days, the conclusion is a lot less difficult than Obama makes it.  Iran has mainly illegitimate motives for pursuing nuclear technology.

In this effort, Obama seems to be begging Tehran to take “yes” for an answer.  He wants to drop the entire nuclear standoff, preferring to run car and train companies and remake the American economic system.  Iran distracts from that effort, which is why he keeps floating these trial balloons to the mullahs in Iran, attempting to find ways to withdraw from the standoff while minimizing the loss to American credibility.

Joe Biden warned us that the world would test Obama if we elected him President.  If they’re taking his measure, the dictators and kleptocrats can’t be too impressed — but I’m sure they’re delighted.

Update: More humorous than offensive:

In a new overture to Iran, the Obama administration has authorized U.S. embassies around the world to invite Iranian officials to Independence Day parties they host on or around July 4th.

A State Department cable sent to all U.S. embassies and consulates late last week said that U.S. diplomats could ask their Iranian counterparts to attend the festivities, which generally feature speeches about American values, fireworks, hot dogs and hamburgers.

Think the Iranians will rush to celebrate the birth of the nation they call the Great Satan?

This is ChimpyO being the chimp he is. Trying to walk a line that is un-walkable when taken in the context of reality. Iran understands only strength and weakness. While ChimpyO prostrates himself as a sign of “understanding”, Tehran prepares to give him a rear entry fist pounding. And the tool smiles like a possum eating a sweet potato while waiting for it.

I had just looked up the Presidential Oath of Office before I saw your comment:

Each president recites the following oath, in accordance with Article II, Section I of the U.S. Constitution:
“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”

I won’t quote the entire Constitution; however the Preamble states enough for my purposes:

We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

He truly believes that if we invite them to some parties… find empathy for their “point of view”… and smile a lot… they’ll see that, hey, maybe America really has changed… golly, we’d sure like to be friends.

These people actually believe that having only one super-power is a bad thing. America only has to “level the playing field” with murderous, raping, tyrannical governments and folksy guitar songs will break out.

This was probably said on the other page… but just in case, let me play devil’s advocate here.

Technically, assuming they aren’t interested in nuclear weapons – which is the real problem, since that requires the biggest stretch of imagination in this whole thing – there would be a legitimate business reason to use nuclear power.

Since Iran has almost nothing to offer BUT oil as far as worthwhile exports are concerned, why not export as much of it as you can, and power your domestic usage with something else? Nuke power would make sense for them in that view as much as it makes sense for us to be doing the same here.

That said, Iran wants nuclear weapons. North Korea’s celebrating the 4th of July early this year, and Obama’s still got his head stuck in the sand on missile defense. Same thing here – head directly in the sand.

Being the mimicking chimp he is, ChimpyO thinks that speeches mean more than action. He fooled the 75% of Americans who voted for him or refused to vote and thinks he can do the same with the Iranians.

The key to diplomacy with terrorists is to LIVE according to your values and making it incumbent upon them to educate themselves on the reality of our values by watching our example.

This is where both you and Obama are wrong – a nation with 15,000 centrifuges can switch to weapons grade U production and have a viable nuke within months.

Bush offered to sell them low grade U in return for neglecting the centrifuges buildup – but has been rejected.

Al Burack, on the other hand, wants Iran to “prove” the nuke prog has peaceful intentions. How exactly does this prove thingie works?

Aristotle on June 2, 2009 at 1:11 PM

Oh, this is a good one! Americans who want more nuclear power plants can now come against the lefties who oppose such stations, using the lefties’ man in the White House against them. Maybe we can become ‘progressive’ on that note.

On the flip side, though, Obama is setting up any future Republican president to look bad if Iran rattles its nuclear saber and has to either back off or respond with a nuclear exchange, depending on the provocation and American interests. A Dem using nukes will be covered by and in the MSM. And a Dem retreating from a national security issue will get the same good press.

Somebody’s screwed and I think it’s my/our USA first–thanks to a Democrat president.

MNDavenotPC on June 2, 2009 at 1:02 PM

A nation can survive its fools and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and he carries his banners openly against the city. But the traitor moves among those within the gates freely, his sly whispers rustling through all alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears no traitor; he speaks in the accents familiar to his victim, and he wears their face and their garments and he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation; he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of a city; he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murderer is less to be feared. The traitor is the plague.”

right4life on June 2, 2009 at 1:41 PM

He wants to drop the entire nuclear standoff, preferring to run car and train companies and remake the American economic system. Iran distracts from that effort…

Bingo. As you say, it’s all designed to defer foreign conflicts long enough for him to nationalize the economy, socialize health care, and pass his global warming tax.

He might as well have told Iran that they can do as they wish, at least until he loses his control of Congress.

petefrt on June 2, 2009 at 1:41 PM

The majority of American’s don’t care and still think he’s doing a swell job.

I don’t know who I’m more afraid of, the Precedent or the stupid American’s who are blindly following this idiot.

Knucklehead on June 2, 2009 at 12:51 PM

You think it is bad now, wait till 20 million illegals join the vote farm.

One of my biggest dissapointments is how Hispanic American citizens are so quick to ignore the rule of law and push for amnesty. I hoped legal hipanic immigrants and hispanic citizens in general would have proven to be more responsible. But, oh no.

Between amnesty and the new welfare state that makes poor welfare class inner city babies a cash crop, our future looks bleak.

Think the Iranians will rush to celebrate the birth of the nation they call the Great Satan?

The fact that you think that all Iranians view the US as the Great Satan shows how limited your worldview is.

Unless you can understand that Iran is a large country with a citizenry capable of differing viewpoints, you really have no business writing about them.

So, have any of the so-called journalists asked Obama why he’s a proponent of nuclear energy for Iran but not for the US?

How stupid does he think we are? Exceedingly stupid, after all “he won”.

kirkill on June 2, 2009 at 1:51 PM

By restating Iran’s right to nuclear power he not only ensured that the United States would negotiate any safeguards from a weakened position, but he also gave Pres. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad a huge victory just ten days before the Iranian election.

I’m still scratching my head with regards to the Jewish vote.

I. Just. Don’t. Get. It.

lavell12: Where the heck have you been all of this time?

Does not our fearless leader realize, Komrades, that Nuclear Energy bi-products have a half-life of hundreds of thousands of years which means they’re toxic for a looooooooooong time? Clean energy? Um yeah if the nuclear waste isn’t buried near a city, an underground water table, anywhere near a wildlife preserve, in the ocean, or anywhere else on the planet where anything alive might come in contact with it. And besides that: everyone knows they don’t want nukes for energy resoources. They want it to pack in suitcase and shipping containers to send to the West. They want it so they can arm short range missles and target their enemies. If they can get their hands on long range missles–the possiblities are endless. I’m sure N. Korea snowed the world with the “we need nuclear energy to light our cities and heat our homes” line and look where we are now…Technology is a wonderful thing. The ethics of human beings, maybe not so much. My suggestion, if you haven’t already, seek Jesus and pray. We are living in interesting and dangerous times.

God Bless Israel and God Bless the USA.

Use logic, if you have the ability.

It is true there are varying attitudes across Iran.

However, the Ayat’allahs hold power. For that sole reason, we should be incredibly weary of Iran acquiring/developing ANY nuclear capabilities.

As I said before, the aspirations of nation to acquire or develop such technology is not only legitimate, but is to be expected. This is the nature of a nation.

However, judging by those in control, those aspirations should be nullified by our aspiration to keep that region, and our own nation, safe.
