Obama: Oil-rich nation’s nuclear-power aspirations “legitimate”
posted at 12:14 pm on June 2, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
President Obama told the BBC in an interview that he views Iran’s nuclear-power ambitions as “legitimate,” as long as they prove that the program won’t produce nuclear weapons. The softball clearly aims to generate some diplomatic thaw within Tehran, but it ignores a rather large fact — and that fact is rather dispositive towards Iran’s intentions:
President Barack Obama suggested that Iran may have some right to nuclear energy _ provided it proves by the end of the year that its aspirations are peaceful.
In a BBC interview broadcast Tuesday, he also restated plans to pursue direct diplomacy with Tehran to encourage it set aside any ambitions for nuclear weapons it might harbor.
Iran has insisted its nuclear program is aimed at generating electricity. But the U.S. and other Western governments accuse Tehran of seeking atomic weapons.
“What I do believe is that Iran has legitimate energy concerns, legitimate aspirations,” Obama said, adding that the international community also “has a very real interest” in preventing a nuclear arms race.
The president has indicated a willingness to seek deeper international sanctions against Tehran if it does not respond positively to U.S. attempts to open negotiations on its nuclear program. Obama has said Tehran has until the end of the year to show it wants to engage with Washington.
The inconvenient fact? Iran has all the resources it needs for energy production now. In fact, with the money they’ve spent on nuclear technology, they could have built oil refineries that would have reduced or eliminated their depending on imports for gasoline, producing it themselves from their own abundant supply. Absent sanctions, Iran could make a mint each year off of oil revenues and produce all the energy they need for domestic consumption, too.
So why do they pursue nuclear power? They want it for something other than energy production, although they’ll take that, too. Since they also spend a lot of money testing and launching rockets these days, the conclusion is a lot less difficult than Obama makes it. Iran has mainly illegitimate motives for pursuing nuclear technology.
In this effort, Obama seems to be begging Tehran to take “yes” for an answer. He wants to drop the entire nuclear standoff, preferring to run car and train companies and remake the American economic system. Iran distracts from that effort, which is why he keeps floating these trial balloons to the mullahs in Iran, attempting to find ways to withdraw from the standoff while minimizing the loss to American credibility.
Joe Biden warned us that the world would test Obama if we elected him President. If they’re taking his measure, the dictators and kleptocrats can’t be too impressed — but I’m sure they’re delighted.
Update: More humorous than offensive:
In a new overture to Iran, the Obama administration has authorized U.S. embassies around the world to invite Iranian officials to Independence Day parties they host on or around July 4th.
A State Department cable sent to all U.S. embassies and consulates late last week said that U.S. diplomats could ask their Iranian counterparts to attend the festivities, which generally feature speeches about American values, fireworks, hot dogs and hamburgers.
Think the Iranians will rush to celebrate the birth of the nation they call the Great Satan?

I get a kick out of how Iran has legitimate aspirations and desires to produce nuclear energy (since oil’s going to run out one day), but we’re not even mildly interested in producing more of it here at home.

I love it. In the US we ‘can’t’ build nuclear-power plants because they will ‘harm’ the environment. But Iran with billions of barrels and trillions of cubic feet of natural gas need nuclear power. It’s like Obama wants a Middle East war that involves nuclear weapons.

I hope this means that Obama finally owns the Iranian nuke issue now. Because, when they deploy their nukes and/or use them, Obama is just simply going to point at Bush and say he inherited the problem…but Bush never accepted nuclear energy as an excuse from Iran.
Also, this means the Administration has no grounds to object to nuclear technology transfer to Iran now, from any country. So yes, he has, de-facto, accepted a nuclear armed Iran…and all the good, wonderful consequences for the world that goes with it.

There was never any problem with Iran having a nuclear power program. The problem is with a secret program closed to international inspection by a regime that is a demonstrated liar. We have a problem with a lack of oversight and inspection to make sure a WEAPONS program isn’t taking place. We never had a problem with power generation.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s secret MySpace entry:
Hi there fellow Islamic bloggers and Islam bloggers to be. My name is Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and I am the great and fearless President of the Islamic Republic of Iran and soon to be the defacto President of Iraq too! Soon I will add another feather to my cap by humbling the new American President as he comes on bended knee to apologize for all of America’s sins agains Islam and it’s great leader – me!
I was was born one of seven children to a humble blacksmith and when I was a child growing up I worked on a farm to earn extra money for my poor father and I got to know a lot of the farm animals very well. I was real nature boy back then. I was a real animal lover. My favorites were the goats of course. I still have such fond memories of my boyhood.
Later I excelled as a student, earning my master’s degree and a Ph.D in civil engineering. I have only three wives, but as the leader of such a great Islamic country and soon to be the dominate power in the Middle East I feel that it is time for me to take my fourth wife. If any nice Islamic ladies are reading this you should email me some time soon. You must be between the ages of 12 and 28 years old. If you are under 12 that would be alright too but you must have a note from a male relative of course.
In addition to my important duties as the Great President of the Islamic Republic of Iran I am now working on my post graduate science project, which when completed in a very few years, I will test on Evil Israel and the Great Satin America.
Who I would like to meet … …
In addition to my fourth wife, and remember if you are under 12 years old, you must have a note from a male relative, I would like to meet other dedicated members of the Great Religion of
SlaughterPeace, Islam of course. We can all get together after work and spend time reading inspiring passages from the Koran and comparing notes on our mutual love of farm animals. We can also go over a list of priority test sites for my developing science project. It will be a blast! It will make much bigger holes than the tiny one in New York!MB4 on June 2, 2009 at 12:43 PM

The Green-Jobs Engine That Can’t:
During the 2008 presidential campaign, Barack Obama promised to transform America’s energy economy by creating millions of “green jobs.” Accepting his party’s nomination at the Democratic convention in Denver, Obama proclaimed: “I’ll invest $150 billion over the next decade in affordable, renewable sources of energy—wind power and solar power and the next generation of biofuels; an investment that will lead to new industries and 5 million new jobs that pay well and can’t ever be outsourced.” This new energy economy, Obama explained weeks later at the second presidential debate in Nashville, would be an “engine of economic growth” to rival the computer and one, moreover, that we could build “easily.” Though he would have quibbled with Obama over details, Republican candidate John McCain similarly praised the virtues of creating millions of these environmentally friendly jobs, both as an answer to the nation’s economic woes and as a way to reduce carbon emissions.
The green subsidies are considerable. The U.S. Energy Information Administration reported in early 2008 that the government subsidizes solar energy at $24.34 per megawatt-hour (MWh) and wind power at $23.37. Yet even with decades of these massive handouts, as well as numerous state-level mandates for utilities to use green power, wind and solar energy contribute less than one-half of 1 percent of our nation’s electricity. Compare the green energy subsidies to the energy sources reviled by environmentalists, such as natural gas (25 cents per MWh in subsidies), coal (44 cents), hydroelectricity (67 cents), and nuclear power ($1.59). With relatively little government largesse, these sources (along with oil, which undergirds transportation) do the heavy lifting in our energy economy.
The alternative technologies at the heart of Obama’s plan, relying on more such government handouts and mandates, will inevitably raise energy prices—and high power prices are job killers. Industries that make physical products, whether cars or chemicals or paper cups, are energy-intensive and will gravitate to low-energy-cost locales—which is why California and New York, with some of the highest electricity prices in the country, have lost manufacturing jobs in droves. But it’s not just manufacturers that need cheap electricity: Google, the poster child of California’s information-technology economy, houses its massive server farms not in the Golden State but in places with lower electricity costs, like North Carolina and Oregon. Policies that drive up energy costs across the nation, as Obama intends, will drive many of these jobs not elsewhere in the country but overseas.
