Obama: Oil-rich nation’s nuclear-power aspirations “legitimate”

posted at 12:14 pm on June 2, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

President Obama told the BBC in an interview that he views Iran’s nuclear-power ambitions as “legitimate,” as long as they prove that the program won’t produce nuclear weapons.  The softball clearly aims to generate some diplomatic thaw within Tehran, but it ignores a rather large fact — and that fact is rather dispositive towards Iran’s intentions:

President Barack Obama suggested that Iran may have some right to nuclear energy _ provided it proves by the end of the year that its aspirations are peaceful.

In a BBC interview broadcast Tuesday, he also restated plans to pursue direct diplomacy with Tehran to encourage it set aside any ambitions for nuclear weapons it might harbor.

Iran has insisted its nuclear program is aimed at generating electricity. But the U.S. and other Western governments accuse Tehran of seeking atomic weapons.

“What I do believe is that Iran has legitimate energy concerns, legitimate aspirations,” Obama said, adding that the international community also “has a very real interest” in preventing a nuclear arms race.

The president has indicated a willingness to seek deeper international sanctions against Tehran if it does not respond positively to U.S. attempts to open negotiations on its nuclear program. Obama has said Tehran has until the end of the year to show it wants to engage with Washington.

The inconvenient fact? Iran has all the resources it needs for energy production now.  In fact, with the money they’ve spent on nuclear technology, they could have built oil refineries that would have reduced or eliminated their depending on imports for gasoline, producing it themselves from their own abundant supply.  Absent sanctions, Iran could make a mint each year off of oil revenues and produce all the energy they need for domestic consumption, too.

So why do they pursue nuclear power?  They want it for something other than energy production, although they’ll take that, too. Since they also spend a lot of money testing and launching rockets these days, the conclusion is a lot less difficult than Obama makes it.  Iran has mainly illegitimate motives for pursuing nuclear technology.

In this effort, Obama seems to be begging Tehran to take “yes” for an answer.  He wants to drop the entire nuclear standoff, preferring to run car and train companies and remake the American economic system.  Iran distracts from that effort, which is why he keeps floating these trial balloons to the mullahs in Iran, attempting to find ways to withdraw from the standoff while minimizing the loss to American credibility.

Joe Biden warned us that the world would test Obama if we elected him President.  If they’re taking his measure, the dictators and kleptocrats can’t be too impressed — but I’m sure they’re delighted.

Update: More humorous than offensive:

In a new overture to Iran, the Obama administration has authorized U.S. embassies around the world to invite Iranian officials to Independence Day parties they host on or around July 4th.

A State Department cable sent to all U.S. embassies and consulates late last week said that U.S. diplomats could ask their Iranian counterparts to attend the festivities, which generally feature speeches about American values, fireworks, hot dogs and hamburgers.

Think the Iranians will rush to celebrate the birth of the nation they call the Great Satan?

Only Obama could spend Independence Day with a group of people who enjoy throwing stones at women.

Ok, here’s what we need to do:

1) Work our collective asses off to get republican majorities in the House and gains in the Senate for 2010.

2) Start the impeachment of Obama.

baldilocks on June 2, 2009 at 2:38 PM

I’m going to have to disagree here. As long as Iran is a member of the Non-Proliferation Treaty the have a right to develop nuclear plants for power supply, and other countries are supposed to help them, the purpose being to stop the development of nuclear weapons through the use of certain types of plants, basically, for “peaceful use.”

Your point is well taken. But every vote for Obama was a vote for weak national defense and weakening (or withdrawing) support for Israel, including those from the Jewish community. How you vote matters, on any number of issues. Too many people thought they could vote for the feel-good “historic moment” candidate, and ignore the peril that electing an inexperienced leftist candidate would bring.

hawksruleva on June 2, 2009 at 1:17 PM

Did I say that how one votes does not matter ?? Singling out the “Jewish vote” as a reason for obama’s presence in the oval is a problem.

runner on June 2, 2009 at 2:47 PM

The Jewish vote was what it was. I can’t tell you how many Shabbat dinners I had where I tried to explain that Jews who vote for the idiot messiah are the lowest scum of the Earth. None of them (ex-friends, now) could ever defend their suicidal positions and they could not defend themselves against my charges that they were signing the papers to destroy Israel.

The Jewish vote isn’t large enough to move anything (except that we all got very, very lucky with the strange, butterfly effect of the old Jews in Florida mistakenly voting for Buchanan in 2000) but the moral depravity of Jews who voted for an Israel-hating, Western civilization-hating fool with an IQ that doesn’t even break three digits is something that cannot be brushed aside.

I even had to argue with friends in Israel, who hold dual citizenship, who wanted to vote for the idiot messiah. Of course, they are people who vote for Meretz and Labor, so they vote for the destruction of Israel, there, too.

That’s okay. I understand. But my point is that Jews had just experienced the Holocaust in the last century and allowing that to happen all over again was the threat that the idiot messiah posed, so obviously. All people of conscience, and sense, had reason to oppose him, but Jews had personal experience to add to that. My mother’s boyfriend is a Holocaust survivor (the only one of his family). He was much opposed to the idiot messiah, as was his family and mine, but that attitude was still rare among Jews. Sadly. But that is not at all unlike all the Americans who have forgotten, or just repress memories of, 9/11, already.

This is further evidence that “Clinton II” is following Clinton I.

Deja vu all over again. Terrorism is a criminal affair so no real response is necessary should something happen because the courts will handle it. That said, how do we resolve Iran’s nuclear threat? Simple. They are entitled to have it as long as they are good people. If not the courts will resolve it. Pilate washes his hands.

The added bonus? Israel gets marginalized and the current government gets undermined. Second added bonus–the UN moves to the fore again.

We got the change, now we need to hope!

I’m not kidding, Daggett. And I don’t think it makes me a nutcase. (I know you are not implying that; just pre-empting a troll or two.)

There is plenty of history over the past 2,000 years of this thing really happening. No less an authority than the Roman Catholic church recognizes this reality. It is a simple abuse of human free will.

I really think the fact that “something wicked this way comes” (thank you Ray Bradbury) is no exageration.
And that something wicked “swaggas” (thank you sycophant media)along in the name of Obama. May Almighty God have mercy on his soul. And may Almighty God have mercy on us all.

Also, is it just me, or does anyone else see an evil glare, a sneer, or snarling baring of the teeth when Obama gives his speeches. It comes across his face for just a second or two, but fairly regularly. If one has the stomach to freeze frame or slow down his speeches, it is even more apparent.

It is like the mask slips and something demonic peeks out.

P.S. Watched the old black & white movie this weekend, “The Devil and Daniel Webster”. Got me more convinced.

As a Jew, I am a very strong believer in the idea that Jews are the chosen people, as I also believe in the idea of the divine providence of America as a nation chosen to be a light unto others. Both suffer from the irrational hate of others for much the same reasons.

And I like to point this out, every so often, if the US falls to the un-American desires of the idiot messiah and his lunatic supporters, then American conservatives will end up being something akin to the “new Jews”, in that their political/social creed is defined by the principles stated in a few documents (The Declaration of Independence, Constitution, Federalist Papers, and a few other writings of the Founders), meant to be implemented over a land that was given by G-d (Manifest Destiny), based in the concept of individualism (as was expressed in the Old Testament by the declaration that Man was created in G-d’s image), sentenced to a life in a diaspora among peoples who don’t respect the conservative creed that has proven itself to generate the freest, most productive, most creative nation that has ever existed.

It’s a rough analogy, but I’ve been fascinated with it, lately.

Thanks, Daggett and right4life. It’s good to know that others see it too.

As St. Paul told us, since our enemy is not flesh and blood, but a fallen and evil spirit, we must combat him with weapons of the sprit. If enough of us fast and pray, we can drive Obama and his demon out of the White House. The good Lord gave us the weapons – and He makes it so easy for us – Any and Everyone can pray and/or fast.

In the Gospel of Mark, Jesus expels a demon from a man which the apostles, though they had been given the power to do so by the Lord, could not. The apostles asked Him why they could not expel the demon and the Lord told them, “This kind can only be driven out through prayer and fasting.”

So, as other posters have said, let’s “gird our loins” and pick up our Scripture, rosaries, Torahs and holy prayer groups and go to battle, because I truly believe the future of our great nation now hangs in the balance.

Let’s act now.

His Word is Spirit and Life.

tigerlily on June 2, 2009 at 4:56 PM

Well of course Iran only has the energy needs of it’s own people at heart when pursuing nuclear weapons.
They were just kidding when they said this:

Nuclear Weapons – Iranian Statements

http://www.globalsecurity.org/wmd/world/iran/nuke2.htm

Hashemi Rafsanjani, president of Iran from 1989 to 1997, gave a speech on 14 December 2001 that was widely interpreted as indicating that Iran was seeking nuclear weapons as a deterrent to Israel. Calling the establishment of Israel among the worst periods of our contemporary history, Rafsanjani stated that, “If one day, the Islamic world is also equipped with weapons like those that Israel possesses now, then the imperialists’ strategy will reach a standstill because the use of even one nuclear bomb inside Israel will destroy everything. However, it will only harm the Islamic world. It is not irrational to contemplate such an eventuality.

or this:

Rafsanjani spoke at the Qods Day (Jerusalem Day) rallies, which are held on the last Friday of Ramadan, and in 2001 fell on 14 December. “You should make the world understand that Israel is the oppressor and that Israel must be destroyed,” Ayatollah Ali Meshkini said during the nationally televised 8 December Friday Prayers in Qom.

The Russians also know Iran is pursing nuclear armament, not
clean,efficient energy:

Russian Military Expert Warns Of Iranian Threat

Russia and the West would be making a big mistake if they ignored or underestimated the potential missile and nuclear threat coming from Iran, a Russian military expert said on Thursday.

“One can speak of one or two years,” Vladimir Dvorkin, a retired general and veteran participant in US-Soviet disarmament talks in the 1970s and 1980s, told reporters when asked how close Iran was to having a nuclear weapon.

I am not sure what Obama is confused about considering his own CIA director has stated that Iran is pursuing the bomb:

Obama’s nominee to serve as CIA director, Leon E. Panetta, left little doubt about his view last week when he testified on Capitol Hill. “From all the information I’ve seen,” Panetta said, “I think there is no question that they are seeking that capability.

The language reflects the extent to which senior U.S. officials now discount a National Intelligence Estimate issued in November 2007 that was instrumental in derailing U.S. and European efforts to pressure Iran to shut down its nuclear program.

Of course how will we know it we can’t even verify “all” of their nuclear sites for inspection:

posted at 2:10 pm on January 27, 2009 by Allahpundit
http://hotair.com/archives/2009/01/27/good-news-iran-to-be-nuke-capable-this-year-says-think-tank/

The public version made only glancing reference to evidence described at great length in the 140-page classified version of the assessment: the suspicion that Iran had 10 or 15 other nuclear-related facilities, never opened to international inspectors, where enrichment activity, weapons work or the manufacturing of centrifuges might be taking place.

Iranian apologist like to point to the fact that Iran is sending it’s spent fuel to Russia under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
Problem is they refused to sign this part (Program 93 + 2, which was designed to prevent states from developing nuclear weapons covertly,)
Remember that Iraq was easily able to avoid detection and subvert these types of inspections.
Iraq was also heavily armed and supplied by the Russians during the supposed “sanctions” that were imposed on them.
Is this who Obama is expecting us to take the word of in claiming Iran is not seeking the bomb?

To even presume or state that Iran’s nuclear ambitions are for anything other than nuclear armament is naive and blatantly ignorant.
Obama seems to think that negotiating from a submissive position is somehow going to win over people who are he!! bent on killing anyone who does not share their religious beliefs.
This only works in theology classrooms and coffee shops.
It will get a tremendous amount of people killed in the real world.

So Obama thinks every Nation has a right to Nuclear Power. So what’s going on in North Korea is no big deal.

There are never any problems if you don’t acknowledge them.

PappaMac on June 2, 2009 at 5:48 PM

Really! How interesting. Then how about nuclear power for the ole’ USA?
Whatever his agenda, it is not good. I just hope he is not putting the USA in worse peril! The people better wake up soon.

GFW on June 2, 2009 at 6:15 PM

That word peaceful when used to describe Iran as intending to use nuclear power for peaceful purposes is a slippery phrasing since the creation of the ummah, the d’ar Islam, is the aim of the devout Muslim. Certainly, a nuclear warhead could impose that message of “peace” — through conquest.

I had a bizarre thought: At a signal of an halal cocktail weenie, all of the July 4 Iranian guests at the assorted celebrations in the US embassies and consulates seize their American hostages simultaneously. Not a rocket red would flare, nor would a bomb burst in air.

What is peculiar about Obama’s green light re Iran’s ambitions is that Iran’s Muslim neighbors are not happy about Iran’s nuclear buildup. How does Obama reconcile the situation with the other ME countries where he will schmooze and bow?

onlineanalyst on June 2, 2009 at 6:30 PM

One other point is that L’il Kim sent one of his first defiant messages with a missile over July 4 last year. Is there a pattern of nose-thumbing going on here?

onlineanalyst on June 2, 2009 at 6:32 PM

I SUSPECT OBAMA AND HATE HIS APPEASEMENT AS MUCH AS THE NEXT GUY BUT THIS POLICY IS NOT VERY DIFFERENT THAN BUSH’S. HERE’S WHAT BUSH SAID IN 2008 AT THE SABAN FORUM:

America recognized that the most effective way to persuade Iran to renounce its nuclear weapons ambitions was to have partners at our side, so we supported an international effort led by our allies in Europe. This diplomacy yielded an encouraging result, when Iran agreed to suspend its uranium enrichment. Unfortunately, after the election of President Ahmadinejad, Iran reversed course and announced it would begin enriching again. Since then, we have imposed tough sanctions and supported multiple U.N. resolutions. We and our partners have offered Iran diplomatic and economic incentives to suspend enrichment, and we have promised to support a peaceful civilian nuclear power program.

REPEAT: BUSHl “we have promised to support a peaceful civilian nuclear power program.”

SO WHAT OBAMA IS SAYING IS NOT NEW.

BUSH WAS MUCH DOVIER AND LESS HAWKISH THAN THE LEFT GAVE HIM CREDIT FOR: WE FOUGHT TORA-BORA AND IN IRAQ IN A HALF-ASSED WAY AND “NEGOTIATED” FOR YEARS WITH THE NORKS AND THE IRANIANS – ALLOWING THEM BOTH TO GO NUCLEAR.

OBAMA IS WAY TO THE LEFT OF BUSH, BUT BUSH WAS A CENTRIST: SOFT ON IRAN AND THE NORKS AND ON ILLEGAL ALIENS AND SO ON.

BUSH AND OBAMA SOULD BOTH BE FAULTED FOR THEIR IRAN POLICIES.

reliapundit on June 2, 2009 at 6:58 PM

The fly in the ointment is Ahmadinejad and the mullahs who keep him in power. Mahmoud is a believer in the millennial arrival of the 12th imam from a well, and Mahmoud’s ambitions seem to be bent on hastening that arrival.

Interestingly, too, Israel has its nuclear warhead for defense. It has never threatened it neighbors with their use. Iran, however, makes plenty of noises of aggression towards Israel. Why wouldn’t the Israelis feel threatened existentially?

onlineanalyst on June 2, 2009 at 7:08 PM

reliapundit: When our Lefties began making their noises about not finding large caches of WMD in Iraq after its liberation from Saddam, it became increasingly difficult to make any claims about Iran’s program. With no human intelligence within Iran to verify what is going on in its closed society, the US took a more cautious stance. Once burnt, twice shy.

Credibility and respect. Bush had it. Obama does not. Same rhetoric different policy consequences.

lorien1973 on June 2, 2009 at 2:02 PM

Only Obama? I have a feeling a great many libtard @$$-kissers would have as good a time as he did, right up until they pulled out a gun or sword and said “convert or die”.

President Obama has told the American people that he views America’s nuclear-power ambitions as “not-legitimate,” as long as he can harness unicorn farts & frilly rainbows to run his propeller hat.

Oh and this from The Jerusalem Post – March 8, 2008

Ahmadinejad: Israel a ’stinking corpse’

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Thursday that the state of Israel is a “stinking corpse” that is destined to disappear, the French news agency AFP reported.

“Those who think they can revive the stinking corpse of the usurping and fake Israeli regime by throwing a birthday party are seriously mistaken,” the official IRNA news agency quoted Ahmadinejad as having said.

“Today the reason for the Zionist regime’s existence is questioned and this regime is on its way to annihilation.”

This might be Israel’s carte blanche to do something about the little nut in Iran.

As a Jew, I am a very strong believer in the idea that Jews are the chosen people, as I also believe in the idea of the divine providence of America as a nation chosen to be a light unto others. Both suffer from the irrational hate of others for much the same reasons.

progressoverpeace on June 2, 2009 at 4:39 PM

very true my friend (not to be confused with mccain’s ‘my friends’ ;-) ) But I am afraid the Lord is about out of patience with the US…we’ve taken His blessings for granted too often as of late…and as a result, we become a second-rate, or worse, power…and abandon israel.

and you’re right, conservatives, especially conservative christians, are next in line for hatred after the jews. I’ve talked to some of my wife’s relatives from overseas..and they think I’m from another planet, its just amazing, and reasoning with them is useless.

but its a sign of the times…strong delusion..the Ezekiel option coming into focus…may God have mercy on us, and protect His people Israel.

I continue to pray for the peace of Jerusalem

Give me a break.

You shouldn’t say “the Jewish vote isn’t large enough to move anything”. Each and every vote counts.

That’s what Obama was inviting the Iranians to.
Obama wants to teabag with the Iranians.

In a new overture to Iran, the Obama administration has authorized U.S. embassies around the world to invite Iranian officials to Independence Day parties they host on or around July 4th.

Prayer is in order, I would say. Perhaps The Precedent will just be so absolutely repulsive on this leg of the Traitor Tour that even the mythical blue-dog dems will start to feel queazy? It’s a long-shot, but we don’t have much else, now. He’s already gotten off to a very good start on that, between calling the US a muslim nation (the guy is just absolutely out of his mind), that he couldn’t be bothered to talk about the muslim killing of Pvt. William Long, that he voted ‘aye’ for Iranian nukes (the obvious consequence of his policy), … I can only imagine what’s going to come spilling out of his mouth in Egypt, though I’m sure he’ll do his bowing to the saudi king in private, at least. How much more of this insanity can any dem with a brain take?

progressoverpeace on June 3, 2009 at 2:38 AM

Here’s what gets me on Obama’s policy re: Iran. If you’re going to talk about legitimate nuclear power, why not tie it to the Iranian missile program?

Or does he think that it takes medium range ballistic missiles to produce energy?

hawksruleva on June 3, 2009 at 9:13 AM

Just what the hell planet is Nobama on? He is on the road to “charming” the rest of the world, and sending the USA into oblivion!

GFW on June 3, 2009 at 11:54 AM

Hey, those engineers working on Iran’s peaceful nuclear energy program look just like Koreans.

MaiDee on June 3, 2009 at 2:09 PM

The US is part of the Non-Proliferation Treaty

the agreement was states like Iran wouldn’t seek Nuclear weapons and they could have help developing nuclear power.

Obama is right, BUT

“What I do believe is that Iran has legitimate energy concerns, legitimate aspirations,” Obama said, adding that the international community also “has a very real interest” in preventing a nuclear arms race.

What he Should have said
“Under International treaty Iran has the right to Nuclear power but they also hold the responsibility of not developing Nuclear weapons and international inspections to verify this fact. And if they uphold their responsibility to stay away from Nuclear weapons we have no problem with them developing nuclear power.”

karasoth on June 3, 2009 at 2:31 PM

So Iran gets the bomb, drops it on Israel the same week and kills 3 million Israelis, WHO does Obama blame then? Who does he apologize to? In the world according to Obama, is it Americas fault Israel gets nuked by Iran? Does America have a RIGHT to nu-cu-lar power plants as well?

Does this buffoon have a CLUE?

I think he knows what he is doing:

Non-Muslims have 3 choices with Muslims according to the Koran:

Convert.
Pay the tax as their slaves.
Die.

It appears Obama chose #2. How symbolic.
