Often people remember others by one or two events. For me, I recall when Leahy was grilling Robert Bork at the Senate Judiciary Committee confirmation hearings. Sen. Leahy demanded to know why Judge Bork hadn't done much pro bono work (without compensation for the public good). The Judge calmly responded he had been preoccupied caring for his wife who was ill with cancer.
I anticipate Leahy will again treat us with another golden moment of thoughtful inquiry.

Anybody else here think that Roberts retiring now is fishy? I mean, if nothing else it got the spotlight off of Comrade Pelosi...

Ever notice how righteous, and sanctimonious Mr. Leahy can be?

Seems to me, people such as that, have a lot to lose, and a lot hidden.

I can hardly wait for Sonia to have one of nine lifetime appointments to the highest court in the land. I'm sure she can make better decisions than those stupid white men, oh, and the stupid black man on the court. I am very excited to see the wise latina set policy and legislate from the bench. I can feel the empathy...

Is this one of those memos?

November 7, 2001/To: Senator Durbin
"The groups singled out three--Jeffrey Sutton (6th Circuit); Priscilla Owen (5th Circuit); and Caroline [sic] Kuhl (9th Circuit)--as a potential nominee for a contentious hearing early next year, with a [sic] eye to voting him or her down in Committee. They also identified Miguel Estrada (D.C. Circuit) as especially dangerous, because he has a minimal paper trail, he is Latino, and the White House seems to be grooming him for a Supreme Court appointment. They want to hold Estrada off as long as possible."

How about this one...

June 12, 2002/To: SENATOR (Kennedy)
"...Ultimately, if [Chairman Pat] Leahy insists on having an August hearing, it appears that the groups are willing to let [Timothy] Tymkovich [10th Circuit] go through (the core of the coalition made that decision last night, but they are checking with the gay rights groups)."

Memogate

Memogate, also being called Cybergate, was the internal U.S. Senate investigation into whether Republican aides unethically tapped into Democratic computer files containing private judicial-nomination strategy memos and leaked them to the press.

Neil A. Lewis, NYT
March 5, 2004

For 18 months, at least two Republican Senate staff aides engaged in unauthorized spying by reading Democratic strategy memorandums on a Senate computer system, according to a report released on Thursday by the Senate sergeant-at-arms.

The 65-page report concluded that the two Republican staff aides, both of whom have since departed, improperly read, downloaded and printed as many as 4,670 files [from a Senate computer] concerning the Democrats' tactics in opposing many of President Bush's judicial nominees. The report, the result of an investigation undertaken at the request of the Senate Judiciary Committee, suggested that many other Republican staff aides may have been involved in trafficking the information. /edited

When are these people going to take a stand for "America" and stop this "what is politically correct" nonsense. The problem is that none of them actually stand for anything. It is always about keeping their jobs. None of them weigh the issues on the merits. Still don't know why none of these reps can challenge these policies and programs on constitutional grounds. That is if any of them know what the document says.

She is a deceiver, she is a dissembler
So much so her trousers are alight
From what pole or banner
Shall they dangle in the night?

What infernal serpent
Has lent her his forked tongue?
From what pit of foul deceitful bent
Are all these whoppers sprung?

What red devil of mendacity
Grips her soul with such tenacity?
Will not those who she fragrantly showers with lies
Put a filibuster between her eyes?

So much so her trousers are alight
From what pole or banner
Shall they dangle in the night?

What infernal serpent
Has lent her his forked tongue?
From what pit of foul deceitful bent
Are all these whoppers sprung?

What red devil of mendacity
Grips her soul with such tenacity?
Will not those who she fragrantly showers with lies
Put a filibuster between her eyes?

if they can't oppose her, I don't think conservatives will take the republican party seriously any longer; they stand for nothing. But I'm sure they'll be ready for the Nanny State Healthcare battle. /sarc

No one believes Leahy or Sotomayor, not even their supporters. They just like what they hear.

In addition to criticizing some of Sotomayor’s rulings directly, Senate Republicans are focusing on process, suggesting that if Democrats try to ram through her nomination quickly, it will be a cause for most Republicans to vote against her. The hope is that a slower confirmation process will give Republicans a chance to make their case on judicial philosophy, even if they seem almost certain to fall far short of preventing Sotomayor from filling the seat being vacated by Justice David Souter.

From what I understand, Miranda and McConnell both want a filibuster, just different approaches, styles and effects.

But I've got to read Miranda's letter, and research just what this Demo-memo-no-no happened under Frist. Given the DeLay shaft, or something different?

this is less about accomplishing something useful in the Senate than staking a claim to being the true “true conservatives,” the sine qua non of which is confronting liberals even when it’ll achieve nothing and quite possibly backfire.
I'm dying to see what the rationale for Republican opposition to national health care is going to be.

Sotomanure to the highest court, parley-voo?
She spews such a lying crock
As on her la Raza has a full head lock
And on top of that her face would stop a cuckoo clock
Hinky, dinky, parley-voo
