CNN poll of Republicans: Huckabee 22, Palin 21, Romney 21

posted at 5:57 pm on June 2, 2009 by Allahpundit

They poll this every three months, always with the same large-ish margin of error (4.5 points), and thus far always with similar results. Namely, Huck, Mitt, and Sarahcuda bunched together at the head of the pack.

What makes this one noteworthy is how far Palin’s declined since February, when she led with 29 percent. The Levi/Bristol tabloid nonsense is taking its toll.

The poll indicates that 13 percent of Republicans would back former House Speaker Newt Gingrich in 2012, with 6 percent supporting former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush. Ten percent of those questioned say they would most likely back someone else…

The poll’s release also comes as Romney’s recent schedule gives the impresison of a man intent on running for the White House again. On Monday, Romney criticized the Obama administration over national security at a speech sponsored by the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank. Friday he was the keynote speaker at a major Republican Party dinner in Virginia. He’s campaigned recently for GOP gubernatorial candidates in Virginia and New Jersey, and he’s a frequent guest on cable news programs and Sunday talk shows.

Asked Sunday about a bid in 2012, Romney told Fox News that “I’m not going to close that door” — although, he added, “I’m not going to walk through it either.”

Who benefited from Palin defectors? Er, not sure: Huck’s actually lost four points himself since the last poll while Mitt, ominously, remains stuck at 21 notwithstanding his financial acumen in an age of recession and his attempts to position himself as a party elder statement. Exit question: If Palin decides not to run, which of the remaining two will pick up the lion’s share of her supporters? The temptation is to say Huck because of her following among conservative Christians but I think that misunderstands the core of Palinmania. Her fans don’t love her because she’s a social con, they love her because they see her as a Jacksonian. And while superficially Huck is closer to that model than an urbane millionaire like Mitt, I think Huck’s reputation for being a big-government conservative, fairly or not, will haunt him going forward. My guess is that Romney will pick up the Palinistas if he runs. Which, let’s face it, he almost certainly will.

Update: Dude?

The Levi/Bristol tabloid nonsense is taking its toll.

I think Gov. Huckabee having a show on Fox that appears at least 6 times per weekend (apart from promo spots on Hannity and what-all) doesn’t hurt either.

PrezHussein on June 2, 2009 at 6:37 PM

Huck has a solid and active base of evangelical voters and thats all. He’ll always have decent numbers from that group, but he will not be able to expand on that base. He won’t do squat in battleground states.

In 2010 and 2012, we could make headway in some states trending Blue and Purple. Sending Huckabee out to states like NV, NH or MN ain’t going to help. We need a solid conservative, but not someone who reinforces the big-government and the Bible thumping Republican stereotypes.

sven10077 on June 2, 2009 at 6:42 PM

Huck will appeal to no one outside the south. If Palin runs, she’ll peel away a chunk of his voters. His numbers are a mirage b/c of his TV show. Think about it, Palin has done NOTHING nationally for months and she still polls this high. If she was on FOX 24×7 like Huck, Romney, and Newt think where the numbers would be.

If she runs, it’ll come down to establishment (Romney) vs grassroots (Palin).

John McCain is out there, right now, teaching the masses about ‘conservatism’. We need people to show up and shout John McCain down and tell him, he has not clue what it is…….It’s time for real conservatives to take a stand and tell these rinos, in their faces, that we don’t buy into their form of ‘conservatism’, bi-partisan bending over to the democrat’s demands.

Palin needs to lock her daughter up in a convent or something and find a way to get some positive air time. Problem is, as with any primary the rest of them will be busy attacking her and everyone else.

OT–I do not know if this was posted yet but here is Gov. Palin statement on this:

Governor Palin Statement on William Long

“The stories of two very different lives with similar fates crossed through the media’s hands yesterday – both equally important but one lacked the proper attention. The death of 67-year old George Tiller was unacceptable, but equally disgusting was another death that police believe was politically and religiously motivated as well.

William Long died yesterday. The 23-year old Army Recruiter was gunned down by a fanatic; another fellow soldier was wounded in the ambush. The soldiers had just completed their basic training and were talking to potential recruits, just as my son, Track, once did.

Whatever titles we give these murderers, both deserve our attention. Violence like that is no way to solve a political dispute nor a religious one. And the fanatics on all sides do great disservice when they confuse dissention with rage and death.”

Governor Sarah Palin

From SarahPAC.

Thisis called leadership. I haven’t seen any comments by the other two mentioned at all.
Huckabee is two-faced plays nice to your face the stabs you in the back when you are not looking. Has made several disappointing remarks about Gov. Palin.

You said yourself, the margin of error is a huge 4.5%. We can’t conclude that there are defectors. All three are statisically tied in both polls. You know this of course…

takeamericabackin10 on June 2, 2009 at 7:31 PM

Hornet, yes he wants to close Gitmo, but I doubt he wants to drop the fight against the mujahideen around the world.

Sweetie, McCain voted against Porkulo-Nimbus Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009

Honey, only after he VOTED for the one in October, Tarp I. Oh, and suspended his ‘campaign, ie, bend over and allow obama to win’ to run back to Washington DC to help screw the citizens.

HornetSting on June 2, 2009 at 7:33 PM

Sweetcheeks, I’m talking about porkulo nimbus

not TARP (which wasn’t good dont get me wrong)

blatantblue on June 2, 2009 at 7:34 PM

If Sarah runs in 2012, she will WIN period.

She has the grassroots support, charisma, convictions, conservatism, and courage.

If she doesn’t, her supporters will not jump on anybody elses bandwagon in any serious amout of money, time, etc.

The reason is that Mittens can’t beat Obama and Palin’s supporters won’t even bother because Mitt will rule as a moderate even if he won.

Plus, if Mittens loses to Obama in 2012, Sarah will stomp the pack in 2016.

Sapwolf on June 2, 2009 at 7:35 PM

McCain would make:

1) A very nice Senator in a Blue state

2) An okay Senator in a Purple state

3) A lousy Senator in a Red State

4) A pitiful Presidential candidate

The thing that pisses me off most about McCain that he held sway in AZ when AZ was a deep Red Golwater state, but never used the bully pulpit to advance conservativism. Other than liberal and bi-partisan issues, the only things that he got passionate about were Defense and earmarks.

Blue, we put those detainees in our prisons, we are going to have more crazies coming out of the system, like the one that killed that soldier and the ones that wanted to blow up National Guard planes and temples.
No, he is putting the population in peril and that is not good national defense.
IF the enemy is already here, ie, because of his amnesty agenda or his need for detainees to be in our jails, the rot will come from within.

HornetSting on June 2, 2009 at 7:36 PM

Jeb Bush-Liz Cheney would be pretty hilarious. If only.

Sugarbritches, both had PORK. Does it matter? BTW, I’m from the south, you cannot out ‘butter’ me, honeybuns.

HornetSting on June 2, 2009 at 7:38 PM

HornetSting on June 2, 2009 at 7:36 PM

Well that’s assuming we let them into the public.

I doubt any of the mujahids will be dropped into Main Street, USA.

Rather, they’ll be put into Supermax, which to me, is more palatable. They get the golden carpet treatment down in Gitmo.

Moussaoui is in Supamax, as is Padilla.

HornetSting on June 2, 2009 at 7:38 PM

Of course both did, but at least he showed some spine with the second one.

Gotta’ give him credit for that at least.

Don’t honeybun me, sugarlips

blatantblue on June 2, 2009 at 7:38 PM

yea arabic just has normal characters

idk how you handle all the symbols

blatantblue on June 2, 2009 at 7:27 PM

The ‘symbols’ are just rote memorization, and there are inherent patterns that help after you get to a certain point. With Japanese the difficult part is the grammar and contextual stuff, which might as well be Martian for English natives. With Chinese you have to deal with the tones, but at least the syntax is roughly similar to English.

DarkCurrent on June 2, 2009 at 7:40 PM

I personally think it is way too early to be worrying about the next campaign.

I think we should be focusing on getting rid of the open primaries. I think campaigns should be limited to 90 days for primaries, 90 days for the general. I think the amount of money being spent on campaigns is criminal. This is all getting really, really old!

Special K on June 2, 2009 at 7:42 PM

DarkCurrent on June 2, 2009 at 7:40 PM

There is that pattern stuff with arabic too — totally obnoxious.

As for syntax, it’s rather straightforward

big dog is dog big

I’m glad I don’t have to deal with intonation completely changing the meaning of a word.

Are you planning on studying mandarin further and becoming fluent?

blatantblue on June 2, 2009 at 7:43 PM

Romney was at a rally for Chris Christie in NJ last week and only attracted “about 50,” according to the media.

If you recall the Georgia runoff, Romney and Rudy went down and drew crowds in the low hundreds. Stumping for Chambliss, Palin drew thousands.

Honey, I cannot. McCain spent his entire career rallying against pork, and yet, when it came down to brass tacks, he folded like a lawnchair and voted for pork to be paid by the taxpayers.
Just because he suddenly flip flopped back to being a pork hawk after the fact does nothing for me, sugarbooger.

HornetSting on June 2, 2009 at 7:46 PM

I’m going to have the two of you locked down in a bunker when I’m in power. Only one will complain.

I think it was a different mentality during TARP I

It was an atmosphere of panic. As much as I don’t like his decision, I cannot look away from his career against pork, and his vote against Porkulonimbus, bunnyhumps.

Then stop tossing softballs, dude.
