CNN poll of Republicans: Huckabee 22, Palin 21, Romney 21
posted at 5:57 pm on June 2, 2009 by Allahpundit
They poll this every three months, always with the same large-ish margin of error (4.5 points), and thus far always with similar results. Namely, Huck, Mitt, and Sarahcuda bunched together at the head of the pack.
What makes this one noteworthy is how far Palin’s declined since February, when she led with 29 percent. The Levi/Bristol tabloid nonsense is taking its toll.
The poll indicates that 13 percent of Republicans would back former House Speaker Newt Gingrich in 2012, with 6 percent supporting former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush. Ten percent of those questioned say they would most likely back someone else…
The poll’s release also comes as Romney’s recent schedule gives the impresison of a man intent on running for the White House again. On Monday, Romney criticized the Obama administration over national security at a speech sponsored by the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank. Friday he was the keynote speaker at a major Republican Party dinner in Virginia. He’s campaigned recently for GOP gubernatorial candidates in Virginia and New Jersey, and he’s a frequent guest on cable news programs and Sunday talk shows.
Asked Sunday about a bid in 2012, Romney told Fox News that “I’m not going to close that door” — although, he added, “I’m not going to walk through it either.”
Who benefited from Palin defectors? Er, not sure: Huck’s actually lost four points himself since the last poll while Mitt, ominously, remains stuck at 21 notwithstanding his financial acumen in an age of recession and his attempts to position himself as a party elder statement. Exit question: If Palin decides not to run, which of the remaining two will pick up the lion’s share of her supporters? The temptation is to say Huck because of her following among conservative Christians but I think that misunderstands the core of Palinmania. Her fans don’t love her because she’s a social con, they love her because they see her as a Jacksonian. And while superficially Huck is closer to that model than an urbane millionaire like Mitt, I think Huck’s reputation for being a big-government conservative, fairly or not, will haunt him going forward. My guess is that Romney will pick up the Palinistas if he runs. Which, let’s face it, he almost certainly will.
Update: Dude?

3 way tie!!
Palin has been off the national stage since the election, hasn’t been extremely vocal and the RINO brigade actively work against her and she is tied with the 2 guys you can’t keep off TV & Radio because they are on a 24 hour loop campaign push.

If Huck runs I personally guarantee you another four years of an ObamaNation. He will do what he did last time: split the base and leave us with a crap candidate.
One of our goals as conservatives is to educate The Huck and his supporters that he has no chance of winning the nomination and that he should stand down for the good of all in America.

Why bother with a poll run by CNN?
With every passing month, more & more people stop viewing CNN for reasons of their own. Regardless of their reasons, the result is the same. People are leaving CNN by the droves.

Mike Huckabee is a well meaning guy. I don’t doubt his faith. I do doubt that he’s got the faintest idea of what constitutes the biblical separation between the duties of government and the duties of an individual. It shows in how he governs.
The man is a feeler, plain and simple. In this day and age we need thinkers and leaders, not touchy feely types convinced government’s job is to “care for the less fortunate.”
TheUnrepentantGeek on June 2, 2009 at 6:07 PM
If Huck runs, I quit…I’m registering libertarian.
Is it better to be a member of a political group who you agree with 90% in theory, who follows through 25% if the time (Republican), or one you agree with 75% of the time, who follows through with those beliefs near 100% of the time (Libertarian).

Well, fine.
‘Cause neither Palin, Huck, nor Romney will be at the forefront of the GOP next election. At least, PLEASE don’t let any of them be at the forefront of the GOP.
It’s soooo early yet. Just about anyone can rise to stardom. First and foremost, us GOPers need to figure out our platform. THEN we can start speculating on a front-runner. As if speculation is gonna do any good anyway.
But, as it stands now, I’m really liking John Boehner.

I will join you. Huck is far from the best guy out there to run and he would be destroyed in the general election. In my eyes he is a big government Republican moderate despite his pandering to Conservatives. I can’t even watch they guy on TV for more than 30 seconds, he is so irritating. He thinks he is clever and funny but he embarrasses himself. I am thinking more and more that Conservatives have no home in the Republican party.
echosyst on June 2, 2009 at 6:10 PM
Listen to me, I’m from Florida. DO NOT choose either Jeb Bush nor Charlie Crist for ANYTHING. I cannot emphasize this enough, so unless you’d like to see Senator Arlen Specter II or another “compassionate conservative” weenie moderate like John McCain representing the GOP, keep these two as far away as possible!
I can live with any of the three leaders, but could we re-animate teh Fred! or his wife instead?
That is all.
Geministorm on June 2, 2009 at 6:10 PM
Um, hell no.
Looks like the media’s trying to influence public perspective to achieve their desired outcome again … hey, it worked for getting McCain the nomination and convincing America we were in the middle of a recession before we were — conveniently, right in time for the election.

Sarah Palin could pick Ted Nugent for VP and it still won’t generate as much excitement as the Obamessiah and his legions of idiots in their 20s. We will never win the excitement game. We can only win the competency and experience arguments.
Speedwagon82 on June 2, 2009 at 6:11 PM
The Levi/Bristol thing has more or less died down, the only thing coming up in the last couple weeks was the very positive Bristol article in People. That isn’t the reason.
22 and 21 are about the ceilings for Huck and Romney. Sarah’s numbers have considerable up-side potential, and virtually no downside. Imagine how high Sarah’s numbers would be if she had her own show on FNC and was a regular on F and F.
One other thing – if T-Paw runs, he’s taking away from Romney only, they’d both be down around 12-15%. The Huck/Sarah crossover is very, very small.

I wouldn’t vote for Huckabee for anything – he is the reason he have Obama. He played a game with idiot McCain to lock out Mitt. Mitt would have beat Obama. I love Sarah. I predict a Romney/Palin or a Palin/Romney ticket. I like Sanford too, but he’s the future with Jindahl. People are craving Sarah and Mitt has the business background to undo some of this crap that Obama did. What a fricken mess. Huckabee – enjoy your TV show and run for Senate…. and we’re done.

Actually, CNN’s “poll” is run by Vinod Gupta. Clinton suckup extraordinaire.
And they refuse to disclose their “methodology”, such as who’s in their polling sample.

I check out Conservatives 4 Palin and Sarah Palin’s twitter frequently.
Latest stories include one on her budget cuts (as portlandon pointed out), her wariness on a “National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers’ initiative “to create nationwide common core state standards in reading and math.”" and a recent visit by SecDef Gates.
On her twitter I’ve seen references to Korea and defense, and numerous other topics as well as the fact Michael Reagan is coming to Alaska.

What would be a riot would be the about face the RINO elite would do on Sarah if Huckster had even the hint of a chance to take the nomination. We’d never hear the end of the “New Palin” stories.
One other thing to throw out there – the MSM needs a Palin/Obama match-up for ratings and sales. It would be like Steelers/Packers, Lakers/Celtics, Wings/Rangers, or Yankees/Dodgers. The two glamour players on the biggest stage.

Huckabee’s success continues to surprise me, and it saddens me that he may just be the most electable Republican.
The only reason Palin would have not to run in 2016 is if the 2010 election goes without a victory of a new candidate with her appeal but not the flaws (and Meg Whitman somewhat qualifies, as a female political outsider who isn’t objectionable to foreign policy or economic conservatives.)
Palin’s endorsement of Steele indicates that she wants to play nice with the establishment, and their candidate in ’12 is Romney, so he’d probably benefit when she endorses him. And if Meg Whitman’s not Governor of California, Sarah Palin becomes one of Romney’s best running mates (a better received run for national office being just what she needs to improve her image and prospects for 2016.)
