Biden on the stimulus: Some money’s being wasted, some people are being scammed

So it is and so it’ll be with anything that government touches — except GM, of course! — although rare’s the government that has as its number two a doofus willing to admit it. Mary Katharine Ham snarks ruthlessly but forgets the upside to this scammy waste, i.e., the number of jobs that are being “created or saved” by the spending. Which, as former deputy White House press secretary Tony Fratto reminds us, is a number pulled straight from Team Barry’s derriere:
There is only one necessary data point to make the “jobs-saved” claim: an accurate measure of expected employment levels in the future. That baseline data is critical to measure what the employment level would be in the absence of the stimulus. Unfortunately for the White House, they cannot possibly know that measurement within any degree of confidence — and they know it.
To understand just how unknowable this data point is, it’s not necessary to be an economist, a mathematician or a statistician.
You only need to know this: the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) – thousands of the most professional and rigorous counters and analyzers of labor data in the history of mankind – makes TWO revisions of employment data for their ESTIMATE of the PREVIOUS month! And even then the reports are mere estimates – an annual benchmark survey is required to reset the nation’s payroll baseline.
That is, the best employment statisticians the world has ever known, people whose lives are dedicated to employment data, conducting labor surveys and research, constantly refining their complex models, have a difficult time telling you how many jobs were created in the PAST!
In other words, it’s like trying to predict how your stock portfolio will perform and then using your half-assed prediction as a yardstick to measure the prudence of your trades going forward. If you predict a 10 percent decline next month and only lose five percent instead, you must be doing pretty well, huh? You saved five percent. You would think our media might want to press The One on this dopey, dishonest concept, if only because righty blogs (which of course they don’t read) have been snarking about it since the moment the phrase “created or saved” first escaped one of his advisors’ lips. The fact that they don’t is, as the man said, unhealthy. Exit question via Ace: “Surely, at some point, George Bush ’saved’ some jobs (when he wasn’t actually creating them — as jobs were created just about every month of his tenure). Anyone care to estimate the media’s reaction at a hypothetical George Bush assertion that he had ’saved’ x number of jobs in a month?”

Reminds me of the wife who tells her husband, “I bought a $800 dress on sale today for $500. Aren’t you proud of me, I saved us $300?”
She must be Obama’s economic advisor.
fogw on June 2, 2009 at 5:27 PM
I’m a financial guy and I completely agree, there is NO sane way to determine how many “saved” jobs. I feel like I’m living in a nightmare when nobody in the media can smack Obama when he says that. “Create or Save” is the most ridiculous phrase i’ve ever heard
youngO on June 2, 2009 at 5:29 PM
Again, I have a hard time believing anyone in this country thinks to themselves, “This is how government should be run.”
lorien1973 on June 2, 2009 at 5:30 PM
Gee…what do you think the MSM would do to a republican VP who said these types of things…

So who are these people who are wasting the stimulus money and scamming the system.
I thought he was going to “Kick Ass & Take Names”.

Would love to see a real riff develop between Biden and Obama. It could happen.
swamp_yankee on June 2, 2009 at 5:32 PM
My Stimulus Plan
1. Drill here drill now, drill in ANWR: 2 Million Jobs.
2. Build nuclear power plants: 2 Million Jobs.
3. There are almost 20 million illegal aliens in the US. They have between 5 and 10 million jobs. Get them to go home on their own by:
Jobs Created: 5 to 10 million.
There would be a shortage of unskilled labor so wages would go up.
4. Let the banks fail but bail out the FDIC.
5. Let GM and Chrysler go bankrupt. Other healthy auto manufacturers would replace them.
All this for only bailing out the FDIC. No other cost involved.
Government costs would go down without the illegals here and in our emergency rooms.
Why couldn’t the brilliant Omama think of this?
Perhaps, the telepropter didn’t like it.
Long live the teleprompter.

What else was up there, besides the entire network of MSNBC, Katie Couric, and Oprah Winfrey?
HornetSting on June 2, 2009 at 5:36 PM
I hope the boredom and uselesness of the Veep position turn Joe into a raging alcoholic. He likes the bottle. Biden as a drunken Veep would be comedy gold.
swamp_yankee on June 2, 2009 at 5:36 PM
I heard the new GM line-up is coming from the same source. Gives all new meaning to the “What GM rolls out this Fall”.

Follow the link through Mary Kate’s story and you’ll get a chance to read some of the stimulus spending projects in your home town.
Here is a link to a project at Luke AFB in Phoenix. Can anyone tell me how it’ll cost $1M to ‘repair ballfield lights’?? And even more mysterious, how will this create 13 jobs?

Because he wants the economy to collapse.
See Cloward-Piven strategy. Destroy capitalism by making the economy collapse and then “solve” the crisis (that you created) with socialist utopia. He expects that people will let him do just about anything if they think it will make the pain stop.
Daggett on June 2, 2009 at 5:44 PM
Relax folks. Don’t you remember this story?
I’m sure Biden is just not aware of Obama’s vow. All he has to do is google “Obama vows accountability on stimulus” to see that Obama vowed. He vowed. (sigh)

Actually, just Google “Obama vows”. It’s very funny.

look, i think joe biden is the absolute greatest. yes, he is a lying dem. but unbeknownst to his brain, his mouth sometimes utters the truth.
at least with joe, you have a remote possibility of the truth & a guarantee of a gaffe.
all you get from obama is lies. and the destruction of America.

Team Barry’s View of the World:
There are never problems, if you don’t acknowledge them.
PappaMac on June 2, 2009 at 5:52 PM
Not going to happen. Just today, AG Eric Holder told the state of Georgia that it can’t even verify U.S. citizenship for illegal aliens trying to vote in Ga.’s elections — even though 2 federal courts (a District court and an appellate court) had already okayed Georgia’s verification process. Just last week, Holder dismissed default judgments granted against the Black Panther thugs who were caught (by videotape and by eyewitnesses) trying to intimidate white voters in Pa. “The black man will rule you.”).
Holder and Obama are doing everything possible to corrupt the electoral process in this country.

I thought part of Sheriff Joe’s job was to make sure there was no waste. Is he admitting he’s not up to the job, or that he really doesn’t give a rat’s ass?

I thought Plugs was the “gravitas”, what’s the opposite of gravitas and who is that?

Maybe Biden’s smarter than we think. He may be using his reputation to say things that most politicians would get crucified for.

President Obama announced today Vice President Biden will be attending the funeral of Vincent O’Brien, the greatest trainer of the 20th century, at Vincent’s home town in Ireland.
“Joe’s a tremendous asset that can be best deployed outside the borders of the United States” stated Mr. Obama

I love how Joe reduces this epic, historical drama down to a pathetic little sitcom. I love it more that it just burns Obama to the core.
sherry on June 2, 2009 at 6:37 PM
Funny, I heard Biden was being sent to deal with a high profile, sensitive, foreign relations matter.
Airbus France. To show our solidarity with the French, Biden will personally look for wreckage parts in the middle of the Atlantic for as long as it takes.
swamp_yankee on June 2, 2009 at 6:45 PM
Now look at this current administration. It shows you the intelligence level, or lack there of, of those that voted for this monstrocity

Wasn’t slo Joe supposed to be the bord doh on point to stop waste fraud and abuse? Dead bird walking.

Biden on the stimulus: Some money’s being wasted, some people are being scammed.
That would just be normal Dem politics.
We’ve gone beyond normal here.
silverfox on June 2, 2009 at 7:27 PM
Now lets be fair to the Prez- I heard today that he helped CREATE a whole host of new jobs at the brand-spankin’-new Hummer plant in China… There’s no telling how many Japanese and Korean jobs were SAVED with the likelihood that the new GM will produce crappy little deathtraps that no one wants…
BKeyser on June 2, 2009 at 7:41 PM
You guys are all making it sound like Joe is being messed with so far as this stimulus spending goes.
I know that that cannot be true because I have been told that nobody messes with Joe. They even call him Sheriff Joe.
myrenovations on June 2, 2009 at 7:50 PM
joe, just keep on keepin’ on. we luv ya!
but dear lord, please, PLEASE, PLEASE don’t let anything happen to obama until after the 2012 elections.
Oh I don’t know. I think at least Biden would be pretty much harmless and entertaining. Also, there would be no way that he could win in 2012.

I am 100% confident that this administration will create millions of new, high paying jobs, in the public sector.

How much of the missing funds are ending up in Barry’s reelection coffers? Or Acorn’s grubby mitts? Remember he is from Chicago.
