The best and brightest?

Imagine you had to pick someone to shepherd a gigantic multinational corporation through a bankruptcy in order to salvage it.  Would you look for someone with extensive experience in the firm’s industry, or would you prefer someone with demonstrated savvy on Wall Street in turning around troubled firms?  If the firm made cars, perhaps you could think of it as a choice between a Lee Iacocca or a Mitt Romney.

Or, maybe, you’d just pick someone from the mail room, as Barack Obama apparently has in the GM bankruptcy:

It is not every 31-year-old who, in a first government job, finds himself dismantling General Motors and rewriting the rules of American capitalism.

But that, in short, is the job description for Brian Deese, a not-quite graduate of Yale Law School who had never set foot in an automotive assembly plant until he took on his nearly unseen role in remaking the American automotive industry.

Nor, for that matter, had he given much thought to what ailed an industry that had been in decline ever since he was born. A bit laconic and looking every bit the just-out-of-graduate-school student adjusting to life in the West Wing — “he’s got this beard that appears and disappears,” says Steven Rattner, one of the leaders of President Obama’s automotive task force — Mr. Deese was thrown into the auto industry’s maelstrom as soon the election-night parties ended.

“There was a time between Nov. 4 and mid-February when I was the only full-time member of the auto task force,” Mr. Deese, a special assistant to the president for economic policy, acknowledged recently as he hurried between his desk at the White House and the Treasury building next door. “It was a little scary.”

Scary?  Well, yes, and not just for Mr. Deese, whose executive experience actually is less than Obama’s.  He’s never run any business, let alone worked in the auto industry.  He joined the Hillary Clinton campaign by taking a hiatus from law school, which he began after working as an assistant to Gene Sperling, now an advisor to Tim Geithner.  His entire resume consists of campaign work.

Perhaps Deese will do a good job, but I’m not terribly sanguine about the prospects of GM prospering under the guidance of someone who hasn’t ever met a payroll or sold a car.  A President who took his own job seriously would never have appointed a second-tier adviser to this position. A national media who took their jobs seriously wouldn’t let him get away with it, and don’t count this NYT piece in their favor.  They give a glowing report to this political-hackery appointment.

Headline AP: Doogey Howser runs GM!

hip shot on June 1, 2009 at 5:02 PM

No, Obama needs him to run his health-care monstrosity.

In all seriousness, maybe Obama realized that GM is cooked, so any idiot could preside over it. With this guy, he probably hopes to encourage conservatives to waste political capital on this rather than on Sotomayor and, more important, on his health-care agenda and on his cap-and-trade agenda.

econavenger on June 1, 2009 at 5:34 PM

You’re right. Here’s an article he co-wrote with Birdsall.

Excerpts:

What Bush could learn from Bono–and the Pope
That’s why programs to relieve such debt command support across the political spectrum, from rock star Bono to the Pope to former North Carolina Sen. Jesse Helms.

The Bush administration is right to demand hard-headed, businesslike approaches to finding the most effective solutions to bring positive change in the lives of the poor. But it needs to think hard about whether unilateral aid is really the most effective way to produce results. With the military effort in Iraq slowly shifting from invasion to reconstruction, the administration has begun to reach out to other donors through the United Nations to leverage the financial, diplomatic, and logistical benefits of having a coordinated effort. There’s a lesson here for the U.S. foreign aid program, too. Finding more coordinated approaches on AIDS or MCA initiatives would not compromise any of the broader goals President Bush has established. It will take serious work, and a willingness to play nice with others. But engaging with our allies seems a small price to pay to transform the business of aid.

It sounds as if Hillary is very important to Government Motors.

It’s rumored that Clintonistas and Hillary donors got special treatment when it came to which Chrysler dealerships are being forced to close (Mack McClarty is one lucky dealer). Steve Rattner is known as the “D.N.C.’s A.T.M.” and has “close ties” to Hillary. Rattner’s wife, Maureen White, was Hillary’s finance co-chair (and, as an aside, reports that she was stopped for a DUI were mysteriously scrubbed from websites). Now we have a little know-nothing squirt whose claim to fame is that he campaigned for Hillary in charge of “dismantling GM”…

Maybe instead of waxing over your conservative sentiments by grasping at straws everyday you should find something else to do.

What the next paragraph of the NY Times article you quoted states:

While far more prominent members of the administration are making the big decisions about Detroit, it is Mr. Deese who is often narrowing their options.

Here is another fine example of this young man’s thinking.

it’s kinda long, but woth the read.

New Car Dealers Get Help from Feds

The Small Business Administration (SBA) announced last week that an estimated 70,000 small businesses, many of them new car dealers, will become eligible for SBAs 7(a) loan program due to a temporary alternate size standard. The new standard, which will be effective until Sept. 30, will allow businesses that do not qualify based on normal revenue or employee industry size standards to qualify based on new worth and average income. Under the temporary alternate standard, a company would now qualify for the 7(a) loan program if their net worth did not exceed $8.5 million, and the average net income after federal income taxes for the last two fiscal years was not more than $3 million.

The Obama administration told reporters last week that the expanded eligibility will double the number of auto and RV dealers who are eligible for 7(a) loans, ensuring that about 50 percent of dealers will be eligible for loans.

The steps that the SBA is announcing today are an exciting addition to the administrations broader efforts to help support the American auto industry and help unlock financing for both consumers who want to buy cars and for the dealers who provide them, said Brian Deese, an economic advisor to the president.

was this right before he and DNC decided who is closing….

I can picture Bob Newhart trying to explain this to Darryl, Darryl, and Darryl:

“Uh, Deese, uh, uh, Brian Deese. Uh, he’s going to complete the dismantling of GM. Or something like that.”

DD&D: “Say what?”

“Uh, yea, President, uh, Obama, uh has picked him to, uh, take over, the uh, well, hell, the final destruction of the auto industry. But, uh, there’s nothing to, uh, really, uh, be concerned about.”

DD&D: “Cool.”

At least Monica knew what to do with a tailpipe and crank shaft. Deese guy isn’t even a third tier advisor. If you had willfully planned to destroy the US Auto industry this is how you’d do it with a mindless bureaucrat with no common sense or experience.

Could have been worse. He could have tapped some community organizer.

…I smell a case of Kennedy’s “whiz kids” comin’ around again…McNamara and the like….

…so bright…so energetic….

…Vietnam…that was one of theirs…that turned out just ducky…didn’t it?….

Do you think Congressman Dingle Mich had any input and if yes what was said?

larvcom on June 1, 2009 at 10:23 PM

Monica Lewinsky would probably do a better job.

Sometimes liberals remind me of used car salesmen.

Instead of no credit, no money, no problem, here’s a car you can’t afford it’s no experience, no qualifications, no problem, here’s the power to influence and control something entirely beyond your capacity to handle efficiently and effectively.
