The best and brightest?
posted at 4:35 pm on June 1, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Imagine you had to pick someone to shepherd a gigantic multinational corporation through a bankruptcy in order to salvage it. Would you look for someone with extensive experience in the firm’s industry, or would you prefer someone with demonstrated savvy on Wall Street in turning around troubled firms? If the firm made cars, perhaps you could think of it as a choice between a Lee Iacocca or a Mitt Romney.
Or, maybe, you’d just pick someone from the mail room, as Barack Obama apparently has in the GM bankruptcy:
It is not every 31-year-old who, in a first government job, finds himself dismantling General Motors and rewriting the rules of American capitalism.
But that, in short, is the job description for Brian Deese, a not-quite graduate of Yale Law School who had never set foot in an automotive assembly plant until he took on his nearly unseen role in remaking the American automotive industry.
Nor, for that matter, had he given much thought to what ailed an industry that had been in decline ever since he was born. A bit laconic and looking every bit the just-out-of-graduate-school student adjusting to life in the West Wing — “he’s got this beard that appears and disappears,” says Steven Rattner, one of the leaders of President Obama’s automotive task force — Mr. Deese was thrown into the auto industry’s maelstrom as soon the election-night parties ended.
“There was a time between Nov. 4 and mid-February when I was the only full-time member of the auto task force,” Mr. Deese, a special assistant to the president for economic policy, acknowledged recently as he hurried between his desk at the White House and the Treasury building next door. “It was a little scary.”
Scary? Well, yes, and not just for Mr. Deese, whose executive experience actually is less than Obama’s. He’s never run any business, let alone worked in the auto industry. He joined the Hillary Clinton campaign by taking a hiatus from law school, which he began after working as an assistant to Gene Sperling, now an advisor to Tim Geithner. His entire resume consists of campaign work.
Perhaps Deese will do a good job, but I’m not terribly sanguine about the prospects of GM prospering under the guidance of someone who hasn’t ever met a payroll or sold a car. A President who took his own job seriously would never have appointed a second-tier adviser to this position. A national media who took their jobs seriously wouldn’t let him get away with it, and don’t count this NYT piece in their favor. They give a glowing report to this political-hackery appointment.

Why not Buffet? He is a big time Democrat and at least he understands how to make money.
This is just one more reason not to buy a GM car.
Terrye on June 1, 2009 at 4:39 PM
This ranks right up there as being one of the biggest middle fingers the Obama administration has given to the American population.
Not only will we nationalize it, not only will be beat down better claims in bankruptcy court, not only will be give most of the power to our political friends, but we will appoint someone who doesn’t have even a modicum of knowledge about the business to be a puppet. It’s almost like a military junta putting in a straw man as Presidente.
How do people not look at this and be infuriated?
Defector01 on June 1, 2009 at 4:39 PM
Probably a nice young man. He has no business in this role however.

Does it really matter at this point? GM is an epic fail any way you look at it.
BigD on June 1, 2009 at 4:40 PM
Classic. Effin classic.
I think I’ll turn over my business to my seven year old son and see how things go.
Then again, my son has actually helped me with little things while I wrench on vehicles which means he has more real-world work experience that Ogabe and Deese put together.
Bishop on June 1, 2009 at 4:40 PM
I do hope he has to testify in front of some Congressional committees, especially ones that have members (preferably GOP) who actually know something about the auto industry. Not read a prepared statement, but also answer questions.
Not likely, with Dems in control, although those with plants in their districts might want some information on what’s going to happen and why.

Wait…I just remembered that Ogabe said running his campaign gave him executive experience. Since Deese has not only participated in a campaign but has been a member of Ogabe’s task force for over 100 days, who better to manage GM’s dismemberment?
Every day now when I see these new Ogabe travesties pop up, I immediately think of the end of the Benny Hill show.

This kid doesn’t have the smarts to realize that Obama’s set him up for utter ruin before he gets old enough to say on his own, “For the first time in my adult life, I’m proud of my country.”
Whoever gets to pocket all the tax money, it won’t be the first one hired.

Somewhat related… Hannity is still bullish on GM… could it possibly be because they are big advertisers?
Wake up, Sean… that revenue stream will soon end, and its better if we all just avoid GM so long as BHO is in charge.

I had quit working at a Chrysler dealership as a department manager in the mid-seventies. When Chrysler ran on hard times a few years later, I had no sympathy. But Lee Iacocca worked as close to a miracle as any human could. If I were looking for someone to reverse the fortunes of an auto manufacturer, Iacocca work be at, or very near the top of my list. So given the total absence of business experience in the current administration, it’s no surprise that the job would go to a political flunkie who’s never operated so much as a lemonade stand. The ObamaFascists believe that profits (which are ALWAYS evil) simply appear for good little girls and boys like presents under the Christmas tree.
May GOD have mercy on the Uited States of America.

I’m speechless. With everyone in agreement that GM going under could potentially send the economy off the edge, they’re putting a guy in charge with ZERO applicable experience? No executive experience, no car experience, no finance experience? Really?
Because after all, poor management decisions are how we got here in the first place…right?

KittyLowrey on June 1, 2009 at 4:54 PM
It is a stunning view of the economic ignorance of the entire Democrat party that this clown comes off looking competent to them all in “running the numbers on GM and Chrysler”, despite no evidence that he actually knows how to operate a calculator. No economics education, no financial analysis, accounting or general business education. No law degree and not a minute of law work of any kind.

The NYT certainly got the headline right. “Dismantling GM” is right. But I thought they were trying to “save” it? Perhaps a subtle note of protest from the NYT in the headline?

What’s coming is the government bureaucracy motors with an unlimited budget to waste taxpayer dollars. This is basically the largest earmark in the history of the country. What’s coming next are cars that no one but the government will buy and they’ll probably pay twice as much as any other car on the market.
