Reporter to Gibbs: Um, why do taxpayers have to pay for Obama date night?

posted at 8:25 pm on June 1, 2009 by Allahpundit

Because shut up, that’s why. Gibbs happily ducks the question of cost — it was at least $24,000, which admittedly is just one grain of sand in the vast desert of Hopenchange spending — but see the second clip below for a more spirited defense from Captain Legthrill. As usual, he’s wrong. No one begrudges The One his right to conduct presidential business from Camp David or Chicago or wherever he pleases. What grates is the needless expense for pure recreation in another city when D.C. would have done just as well. A venial sin, to be sure, but a sin nonetheless given how the media would have demagogued the hell out of Bush for behaving similarly. If you want conservatives to lighten up, address your double standards first.

Oh, also, you’ll be pleased to know that one of America’s richest men has decided the annual presidential salary of $400,000 per year isn’t “much.”

Update: The Daily Mail estimates total cost to be $73,000.

“He better have liked the play,” one angry passenger supposedly said about Obama. When the ferry passed Pier 11 and people caught a glimpse of one of the presidential helicopters, another traveler was overheard saying, “There’s your tax dollars at work!”

My favorite aspect of this was reading about all the people who were unable to get to their shows because the secret service kept so many streets blocked off.

Apparently there were a lot of restaurants that couldn’t turn over their customers, either because of secret service restrictions, thus crippling their income for the evening.

Good to be the king.

Totally ridiculous. I don’t get why they think they can get away with this. You get a good salary and you don’t need to spend it on anything. (Nor are you expected to spend it.) Go check out some fancy places in DC first, and do it on your dime. It’s not like you will even notice the price.

I bet Chrissy Legthrill wishes HE were Obamas date that night.

I would however, just for ammo, like to know the cost for Dubya to go to Crawford, since I’m sure it was far cheaper than the one night trip to Broadway.

and what does POTUSA do,fires up Air Force one,and heads

Why did his Obamaness need 2 additional plane loads of Press to accompany him on a ‘date’? I mean, when I was dating, I usually managed without even one plane load of reporters:

According to the Daily Mail, “The President used three planes, one to carry the couple and two to ferry aides and reporters all the way from Washington. The cost of each flight was thought to be nearly [$24,000]. The bill was pushed even higher with the use of two helicopters, one to take the Obamas to catch their plane in Washington and another to zip the party into Manhattan from JFK airport.” In addition, “Police also shut down New York streets for the motorcade to pass through so they could get to their date on time.”

“Pissant,” Matthews? You are lower than low and haven’t the capability of being an ethical journalist. Why not ask for Gibbs’s job? You have about the same caliber of cluelessness, but your delivery is more pompous.

MSNBC is one free DNC-Obama campaign ad.

And BTW, Chrissie, the only “interests” that Obama has are those that stroke his own ego. Bush didn’t need cameras on himself when he was reading books, even if you didn’t think that he was “intellectual” enough to do so.

Bishop on June 1, 2009 at 9:06 PM

I don’t begrudge them a date night.

I do, however, begrudge them a date night that costs tax payers tens of thousands of dollars.

Guess what? You’re the President! It’s never going to be cheap when you fly somewhere. It’s not like NY is a town in the middle of nowhere that the President is never going to go during his presidency. Plan a Broadway date night to coincide with a trip you’re already going to have to take.

Otherwise, realize that, as a public servant, you do not get to do whatever you want whenever you want without criticism for your excesses. You can’t fly to NY on your own without all of your security and aids. You shouldn’t fly there on the public’s dime with all of your security and aids for a date night. It’s one of the hassles that comes with the job.

justincase on June 1, 2009 at 9:09 PM

The Daily Mail estimates total cost to be $73,000.

Not quite. The article estimates that to be just the cost of the three airplanes that transported the Obamas, plus various aides and reporters. There was also the (as yet unknown and unrevealed) cost of the two helicopters, plus the (as yet unknown and unrevealed) cost of the NY police officers who had to block off traffic and provide additional security. So we’re talking about a total cost of well over $100,000 taxpayer dollars — just for a “date night” of a few hours. This kind of extravagant spending (of our money) from a man who lectures the rest of us about the need to make sacrifices, and to live within our means.

And we’re all looking forward to seeing the final tally of how much the Obamas’ “date night” cost us taxpayers. We know how much Obama supports transparency and accountability in government.

Lousy hypocrite.

But I guess they’d have to build a bigger bedroom to accommodate 2 planeloads of reporters and aides to watch them.

theboss on June 1, 2009 at 9:17 PM

Most states have strict ethics codes for use of funds and assets that apply to their Governors and elected officials (just ask Palin), that’s because elected officials owe it to their constituents not to use taxpayers money for their personal indulgence. It’s a shame it has to be spelled out on any level but most people would assume the President would have enough sense not to take advantage of assets paid for by the taxpayer on such a viable level.

sherry on June 1, 2009 at 9:39 PM

I saw how the Filipinos felt about Fidel Marcos and Imelda. The peace was kept only thru ruthless suppression of dissent. The Provost Marshals would beat anyone who got out of line around the Navy bases, or protested Fidel and Imelda. Eva and Juan Peron were similarly protected……. until those around them saw what thieves and crooks they truly were and allowed the dissent to grow.

Dictators sow the seeds of their own downfall through the way they treat those around them, and make them feel betrayed, and like “little people” of the world. Their attitude of arrogance, and privileged behavior disgusts the people of their own countries, and causes hardened hearts and hatred amongst their own disciples. Once those disciples get a clue about the even harder feelings behind those of us who are oppressed (and believe me, we conservatives are beginning to be oppressed by the demonization of ourselves, and the growing tax burdens placed on us by stupid politicians and fawning journalists), they run and hide like the cowards they always have been, and abandon their Messiah like a used condom.

And make no mistake, this man and this woman are sowing the seeds of their own downfall, as quickly as they can. They are arrogant, non empathetic, tone deaf when it comes to political images, and thieving ratfaced bastards when it comes to corruption. They feed the unions, Dhimmicratic thugs and crooks, pork spewing politicians and communist and socialist groups before they care for the American people’s most basic needs.

Their day, their hour is coming…. because they don’t know how to behave, and they most certainly don’t know how to lead.

Support your local Tea Parties, and organize, organize, organize. Speak up EVERY time you hear someone loudly admire the administration in public. Inundate their websites, letters to the editors, and suggestion boxes with complaints about the attitudes and behavior of King Obambi and Queen Marie Michelle Antoinette Obama.

They are heading the American train down the track of destruction and mayhem and they do not recognize they are the cause.

I fart in their general direction. But I will organize and speak out. Now and forever.

Did he pay for dinner? For tickets??

LEBA on June 1, 2009 at 8:32 PM

I read that he paid for the dinner and show out of his pocket. Guess someone mentioned it to him as an after thought that he should at least appear to be paying for it out of his pocket, or maybe he wanted to feel like a real man and pay for the dinner and tickets. From the way Gibb boy spit and sputtered when asked why we had to pay for his date to New York, it was apparent that they had not given a moments thought that anyone would object to the taxpayers picking up the 25-75 thousand dollar cost of the trip. Obviously they see things differently, as Obama said, he won, he was president, implying that he had the right to do anything he pleased, and we had not right to question. As to what they were thinking, Chrissy boy pretty well answers that question with his spewing attempt to justify it all. I have to ask, why did everyone have to tag along for a dinner and play date? I would say for the same reaosn that he went out for a hamburger that could have been prepared in the Whitehouse kitchen, the photo opp and news reports of his show and tell. I guess he gets bored sitting in that office, “reading reports” that he apparenty does not understand from those he hired to do his job and “writing stuff; his words when asked what he does all day. I wonder if the other campaign promise he made to Mrs Obama was to create an America she could be proud of.

I like the headline on the Pravda clip: “RNC attacks Obamas’ trip”

It doesn’t take a genius to guess what the headline would be if Bush had done something similar.

Maybe something like “Evil Usurper Steals Charity Money and Destroys Environment for Own Selfish Pleasure”…

He had to be in Hawaii circling the wagons at that time.

It’s true. It’s just one distraction created to distract us from the last, and so on. Not at all dissimilar to his plans re: the economy: “errrr…. pass. I took my fine pipes wifey to a Broadway show on your dime. Go Bears!”

S T I M U L U S… Make it light, make it bright, make it gay!

I demand an ethics complaint be filed about the unnecessary spending of tax dollars to….oh wait, this isn’t Sarah Palin?

Nothing to see here. Move along.
