Obama mulling ways to rebuke Israel on settlements

posted at 5:35 pm on June 1, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Barack Obama has already gotten a rebuke from Benjamin Netanyahu on the issue of settlements, and perhaps he’s looking for revenge.  According to the New York Times, the White House has spent quite a bit of time figuring out how to make Israel pay for not following the Road Map’s prohibition on settlement growth:

As President Obama prepares to head to the Middle East this week, administration officials are debating how to toughen their stance against any expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank.

The measures under discussion — all largely symbolic — include stepping back from America’s near-uniform support for Israel in the United Nations if Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel does not agree to a settlement freeze, administration officials said.

Other measures include refraining from the instant Security Council veto of United Nations resolutions that Israel opposes and making use of Mr. Obama’s bully pulpit to criticize the settlements, officials said. Placing conditions on loan guarantees to Israel, as the first President Bush did nearly 20 years ago, is not under discussion, officials said.

Still, talk of even symbolic actions that would publicly show the United States’ ire with Israel, its longtime ally, would be a sharp departure from the previous administration, which limited its distaste with Israel’s settlement expansions to carefully worded diplomatic statements that called them “unhelpful.”

I wonder how much time the White House spends on finding ways to penalize the Palestinians for not adhering to the Road Map?  After all, Hamas has spent the last couple of years launching rockets from Gaza.  Barack Obama responded by giving them almost a billion dollars for rebuilding after the Israelis finally had enough and stomped on Hamas.

Israel will have to give back on settlements eventually, in some manner, if and when the Palestinians actually work towards a real two-state solution that accepts Israel’s existence.  The logistics will call for major changes, as national sovereignty on both sides will be impossible to defend in the current configuration.  But that doesn’t mean that Israel has to act unilaterally, especially while the supposedly moderate Mahmoud Abbas rejects offers from Israel that would have resolved this very issue in his favor.

As for abandoning Israel at the UN, well, that hardly surprises when Obama chooses advisors like Samantha Power and Susan Rice.  It does, however, set up an interesting position for Obama at the UN, an organization he fulsomely praised during his campaign.  If the UN Security Council starts passing ridiculous resolutions prompted by its Human Rights Council about Israel’s supposed human-rights violations while ignoring Iran, China, Cuba, and the rest of the rogues’ gallery, will he help enforce them with action against Israel and guarantee a political blow to the Democratic Party?  Or will he simply ignore them, making the UN even more irrelevant than they are now?

This is one ball of wax that just won’t solve. So why offend Israel? Why not preach to the Arabic nations his “share the wealth” and have THEM forfeit territory for a Palestinian nation? Because they don’t want one. At least Israel offered land.

I would be willing to bet that Obama is not very well thought of in the world. Dirty little secret here in the U.S. is that we are constantly told that “he remains popular, but his policies are not”. Well…. I maintain that people really do not like him, but are afraid to speak out because he is black. The blacks I talk to aren’t afraid to say that they don’t like him and he’s setting race relations back decades. Amen.

Read Dick Morris’ latest column.

THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING CLINTONS

Asked why he was naming some of his rivals to top administration jobs, President Lyndon B. Johnson said it best: “I’d rather have them inside the tent pissing out than outside pissing in.” President Obama seems to echo Johnson’s management style in his handling of Bill and Hillary Clinton. By bringing them into his inner circle, he has marginalized them both and sharply reduced their freedom of action.

It may appear odd to describe a secretary of State as marginalized, but Obama has surrounded Hillary with his people and carved up her jurisdiction geographically. Former Sen. George Mitchell (D-Maine) is in charge of Arab-Israeli relations. Dennis Ross has Iran. Former U.N. Ambassador Dick Holbrooke has Pakistan and Afghanistan. And Hillary has to share her foreign policy role on the National Security Council (NSC) with Vice President Biden, U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice, CIA chief Leon Panetta, and NSC staffer Samantha Powers (who once called Hillary a “monster”).

With peers who are competitors and subordinates who can deal directly with the president, Hillary is reduced to announcing foreign aid packages for Pakistan while Holbrooke does the heavy lifting.

There you go.

I saw that article, too. Two of the slickest politicians in the US got pwned by a Chicago machine politician. I always guessed that Hillary gave her support in exchange for replacing Biden on the ticket in 2012 (no way Joe can be trusted on the campaign trail with his mouth. He’ll have “health reasons.”)

Now I wonder if the One will choose someone else in 2012 and leave her speechless and without a political future. She would not be able to say anything publicly, since she could hardly reveal such a backroom deal.

If she is going to break with Obama on a matter of “principle” (a term one uses loosely with the Clintons), over Israel might be the best issue. But not just yet.

Andy in Agoura Hills on June 1, 2009 at 6:54 PM

One of the conditions for the end times is that Israel stands alone, with the rest of the (civilized) world either hostile or just not caring about her fate – not unlike Czechoslovakia was thrown to the dogs before WW2. “Those who don’t learn from history” comes to mind…

I used to think this could never happen in my lifetime. I once believed that at the least my country would stand by the brave Jewish peoples trying to hold their ancestral lands against the hordes of Islamic barbarians who want them dead and us subdued. I was wrong. Terribly so.

Sooner or later the “Little I” will HAVE to tell our traitorous idiot to go take a hike – if nothing else out of sheer survival necessity. Israel simply doesn’t have that much room to ‘bend’ in diplomatic negotiations, despite all the clueless libtard propaganda to the contrary. Their nation is a postage stamp surrounded by rabid Jihadis on three sides, leaving almost no room for tactical retreat in case of surprise attack, city expansion or even a little ‘growing room’. Whatever nonsense American Jews keep bobbleheading along to, our friends overseas will very soon have to choose between Obama’s veiled demands or the safety of their nation. And that’s if they haven’t had to do so already in some secret meeting we don’t know about.

Barring a miracle, the US/Israeli showdown is coming fast and the consequences WILL be ugly. The world in general and us Americans in particular are in for some very nasty times.

(“G_d” is actually an silly pretension on the behalf of Jews, since the word meaning God which we aren’t supposed to speak is a Hebrew word–Christians use “Jehovah”. Yet another explanation: the Reformed Jews tend to have a strong aversion to the practices of Orthodox Judaism, like liberal Christians do to Fundamentalist Christians.)

Why is the notion of shalom in Reformed Judaism ridiculous? Consider an abused wife talking about shalom to her abusive husband in 1899. Consider her hoping to avoid being beaten by talking about peace.

Exactly. I think everybody simply wants a revenge.

radiofreevillage on June 1, 2009 at 7:05 PM

A revenge for what though? It depends on each group of people, right?

This is shocking, absolutely shocking I tell you! I though Obama had his ears all plugged up all those many years that he attended the Reverend Jeremy Wright’s church. I guess he must have heard a thing or two after all.

For progressives, the disconnect would be attractive. American liberal Jews seem too preoccupied with their own thriving lives to be concerned with anything outside of their comfort zone, Israel.

Obama was preaching the Jericho concept to the youth.

Hillary is stuck. I honestly don’t know how much longer she will be able to take this. She’ll destroy her legacy if she hangs around this much longer

Dude, she has a RESET BUTTON! Not a problem!

Well, I hope my fellow Reformed Jews regret their votes in the 2008 presidential election now. However, I suspect that they are still so blissed out by their ridiculous notion of shalom (peace) that they won’t even show regret now. Its REFORM Judaism. Secondly, Reform Judaism its not Judaism. Finally, you obviously have no understanding of Judaism. HaShem simply means “the name”. Elohim is the proper name, and YHWH or Jehovah is for Gentile usage. The name of G-d in Hebrew cannot be pronounced.

Hope all the Jewish libtards realize what they have done. As a Jew, I cannot comprehend how anyone could have voted for this betrayer of Israel. Disgusting!

Might not be for a decade, and things might have to become horrible first, but they’ll turn around.

When has any Western politician ever been held truly accountable for their actions?

Never?

The Republicans are hurt because they’re not invited to the best parties any more, and have decided to suck up to the popular kids, aka The One and his minions.

As for the press, well, they’re in the popular crowd now, why would they want to mess that up?

So yes, we a genuinely screwed.
