Obama cuts funding for green tech Interior hailed

Barack Obama promised to pursue every avenue to shift America from petroleum- and coal-based energy production during the presidential campaign — and apparently Ken Salazar was foolish enough to believe him.  Weeks after Interior hailed wave technology as a promising new front for green electricity, Obama has cut back on the funding Congress authorized to research it:

The Obama administration has proposed a 25 percent cut in the research and development budget for one of the most promising renewable energy sources in the Northwest — wave and tidal power.

At the same time the White House sought an 82 percent increase in solar power research funding, a 36 percent increase in wind power funding and a 14 percent increase in geothermal funding, it sought to cut wave and tidal research funding from $40 million to $30 million.

The decision to cut funding for tidal and wave power came only weeks after the Interior Department suggested that wave power could emerge as the leading offshore energy source in the Northwest and at a time when efforts to develop tidal power in Puget Sound are attracting national and international attention.

By some estimates, wave and tidal power could eventually meet 10 percent of the nation’s electricity demand, about the same as hydropower currently delivers. Some experts have estimated that if only 0.2 percent of energy in ocean waves could be harnessed, the power produced would be enough to supply the entire world.

This isn’t the first time in this administration that the right hand didn’t know what the left hand was doing.  The most embarrassing example was the AIG bonus outrage, which Obama used to inflame public opinion as some sort of big surprise when Tim Geithner knew about it at least two weeks and possibly several months in advance.  More recently, the administration’s senior members have had a problem keeping their assessments of the threat from North Korea consistent, ranging from “global threat” (Obama) to no imminent threat at all (National Security Adviser James Jones).

This looks particularly embarrassing, especially since it takes place on Obama’s policy turf.  Interior just got done promoting this technology as Congress appropriated the funds for its research.  Now Obama has essentially reversed Salazar, which prompts the question of whether Obama actually consults with his Cabinet, or merely uses them for window dressing.  So far, their performance makes it look more like the latter rather than the former.

Why is Obama picking winners and losers in the green spectrum anyway?  After Interior’s assessment of wave technology’s potential, it doesn’t look like the administration had any scientific reason to make the cuts while increasing solar and wind funding.  Could it be that the solar and wind lobbies have more of an influence than the White House wants to admit?  When politicians pick winners and losers, the best way to figure out the decision is to follow the money.

Of course it’s politics. He is paying back. We should invest in tech that actually works. Solar and wind are minimal at best. Nuclear and hydrogen are the future. But not for the U.S.. Stupid!

On the other hand:

Energy Department spokesman Tom Welch, however, said the Obama administration is asking for 10 times more for tidal and wave power than the Bush administration did.

Which means that this is probably yet another thing that really doesn’t produce energy at a competitive price, or private business would be all over it anyway.

The reason why it was cut back was precisely because it was promising.

The environmentalists don’t want the world to switch to green power, they want the world to stop using power altogether.

SMART POWER

UNREPENTANT CONSERVATIVE CAPITOLIST on June 1, 2009 at 12:07 PM

This is a rather stupid decision, politically. Wave and tidal power is only available along the seacoast. The entire West Coast (WA, OR, and CA) voted for Obama. Along the East Coast, Obama won all states except SC, GA, AL, MS, LA, and TX, including close upset wins in VA, NC, and FL.

Louisiana and Texas have too much offshore oil to be worried about tidal power, but Florida has a very long coastline and could benefit tremendously from wave and tidal power, as could Virginia (Chesapeake Bay) and North Carolina (bay between the Outer Banks and the mainland).

What about New England, which has no oil resources, is dependent on foreign natural gas, and has extremely strong tides in the Bay of Fundy?

Earth to Obama: Water is heavier than air, and moving water is a lot more powerful ! Don’t you remember those big breakers in Hawaii ?

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on June 1, 2009 at 12:10 PM

Why would Obama do such a thing? Because the tidal technology is potentially more reliable, efficient and viable than solar and wind. The companies involved in solar and wind have a powerful lobby and therefore they are getting funds. It’s yet another example of how government undermines markets & is used by powerful businesses to undermine their competition.

Or something much more colorful like that.

I get the impression that Obama when it comes the environmental movement is just stringing them along in order keep them on side so he has the numbers to jam through the real goal of his administration which is Universal Health care.

Dreadnought223 on June 1, 2009 at 12:30 PM

The tidal generators, built by an Irish company, are 50 feet tall and can spin either way depending on the direction of the tides. The units will be submerged, with 80 feet of clearance from their tops to the water’s surface. They’ll be placed outside of shipping channels and ferry routes.

The pilot plant is expected to produce one megawatt of electricity, or enough to power about 700 homes. If the pilot plant proves successful, the utility would consider installing a project that powered 10,000 homes.

This is why it is an overall stupid idea. Just because this administration has no problem backing other stupid ideas, doesn’t mean they should be pounded for backing away from this one.

The $30M they are proposing is $30M too much.

Slight change of subject: it pisses me off that Americans are at such polar extremes on the subject of energy. I frankly have no idea whether we have 100 years’ worth of fossil fuels or 100,000 years’ — but there is SOME limit. And I’m not all panicky about it if we have to create some pollution to give the world a much higher standard of living; but its obvious that less pollution is better than more. There are lengths to which we can and should go to avoid wasting resources and creating unnecessary pollution. Turn off the damn lights when you leave a room. Combine trips. When you replace your car, consider whether the small SUV will work in your life instead of the Hummer, or maybe even drive a car. Get a programmable thermostat. Give those compact fluorescent lights a try (I like them fine, and not only do they last a LOT longer but I also save a few bucks on my power bill). And yeah, make sure your tires are aired up. The idea that that’s going to meet all our energy needs is ridiculous, but to borrow from Poor Richard, “a kilowatt saved is a kilowatt generated.”

If we conservatives voluntarily demonstrated greater common-sense responsibility where the environment and our energy resources are concerned, we’d be in a much better position to argue our case for building new nuclear power plants and increasing drilling, and fighting back some of the overboard environmental policies.

If you are a complete conservative, you have been combining trips, turning off the lights, driving a car with a standard transmission for better gas mileage as well as the fun of actually driving as opposed to just pointing, setting thermostat to a higher temperature in summer and lower in winter and keeping your tires inflated properly. I also try to reuse things when I can and to recycle whatever can be recycled and to give anything that is still serviceable to Goodwill or Salvation Army so someone else can get additional use out of the item. I eat my leftovers and I don’t eat out very often. I unplug my TV when I’s not using it. I use ceiling fans to keep it comfortable when the thermostat is set on 79 degrees during the summer. My mother always told me, “Use it up, wear it out, make do or do without.” My 1991 Toyota Camry still runs fine, so why would I want to buy a new car and pay interest when for just a few dollars, I can keep my already paid for car running.

Political? Yes, but the “Green” movement in the U.S. is less about the environment or energy than it is about the guilt and/or animosity felt by a significant number of Americans–to them, the U.S. must be taken down a peg. Otherwise, on not only environmental issues but on human rights issues, as well, the libtards would be trying to effect global change. Instead, they want to cripple the West because it’s racist for Europeans and Americans to be so dang prosperous.

Also the only one, I presume.

Wave power ranks above solar but below wind in terms of idiocy. By all means let´s explore it but let us at least be honest: we will never get more than a few percent of our energy needs from all these sources combined and we will pay dearly for those and I´m sick and tired of hearing about them.

Doesn’t this just figure.

Let’s see:

Wind – Sporadic and unpredictable, therefore difficult to harness its energy for electricity.

Tides – Constant and very predictable, therefore much easier to harness its energy for electricity.

So who do the feds give more funding to? You guessed it.

Great! That makes two of us!

But there are some — including Rush, who I otherwise like — who take pride in being uber-consumers, just to poke a finger in the eyes of people who are environmentally responsible (I know, he’s really aiming at the petty tyrants in the environmental “movement”; but he forgets that millions of concerned RATIONAL Americans are actually listening, while the wackos are not — and a fair number of his listeners have adopted the same ’screw the environment’ attitude).

BTW, if you look closely you’ll see that I said WHEN you go to get a new car — not that you should. Building a car is a HUGE energy consumer and pollution generator, in addition to being expensive. My ‘95 Dodge full-size van is “only” 14 years old (my previous vehicle was a ‘66 Mustang, still running strong when a guy crossed the center line and hit me head on), and I expect to drive it for at least another 3-5 years. I carpool with Mrs. Regular a lot of the time, so I don’t rack up a lot of miles any more anyway.
