Gay rights advocates to “out” those who support referendum opposing domestic partnerships

A group called WhoSigned.org says it will publicize the names of people signing petitions for Referendum 71, which seeks a public vote to overturn a new expansion of Washington’s same-sex partnerships…
In a statement Monday, WhoSigned.org says it expects people who see the names online to contact the signers for what may be uncomfortable talks about gay rights.
That’s as good as euphemism as any for what they have in mind. If it’s all about pressuring opponents of gay rights with boycotts and “direct action” of various sorts, legitimate and otherwise, why allow a secret ballot at all? Force everyone to sign on the dotted line at the polling place and then publish their names. That’s what this amounts to in practice anyway.

So much for “tolerance” and finding “common ground” on the hard issues…
Branch Rickey on June 1, 2009 at 9:07 PM
They make it easy for their opponents…and they are making it personal too. If they fail, they have no one to blame but themselves (though they won’t). People, oddly enough, don’t like to be coerced like this and may hold it against these folks for a long time.

I recall hearing in the past that a lot of the top nazis were gay. I always took that with a grain of salt. I may have been in error.

Martin Luther King wasn’t afraid to be known to push for what he thought was right and just. These chickensh*ts want to take away other people’s rights, and never feel pressure in return.
Sorry. Doesn’t work that way.
Freedom of expression doesn’t mean a shield from peer-pressure. I am pro-choice, but I support the freedom of those who want to yell at women on route to abortion clinics. Similarly, if you think gays should be second class citizenry, you’ll have to listen to some of us who disagree with this benign idea.

This is another step towards Orwell. First, create a politically sanctioned opinion. Then, intimidate through “shame” those who do not share that politically sanctioned opinion. This is how a society develops into a totalitarian state of “one unified” worldview. You simply make having any alternative view unacceptable and legally punishable through organized social and economic pressure.

But now they are outing straights. And the ethical rational behind this is?

Can conservatives please start trying to ruin the lives of a few liberals? I’m really tired of seeing everyone on our side getting destroyed. It’s time to ruin a few reputations, get a few people fired, end a few careers. The only way the liberals will stop is if there’s mutually assured destruction.

It is public policy. People who actively promote certain policies should have no expectations to do it under the radar.

The most self-defeating cause in history continues to defeat itself with great efficiency. Why doesn’t the gay marriage movement just appoint Perez Hilton as their official spokesperson, since they obviously intend to completely turn off potential supporters such as myself with stupid shit like this.

No, I won’t. It is my right to say whatever I want in public. If you try to teach me a lesson, then

2) you will go to prison for violence.
radiofreevillage on June 1, 2009 at 9:24 PM
Except that in many (most?) states homosexuals are legally protected from being fired for their sexual orientation, so conservatives don’t have any way to equally push back against this type of public intimidation.

radiofreevillage on June 1, 2009 at 9:27 PM
If you are a trespasser on someone’s property, in most states you will find that the owner can use quite a bit of force to eject you – and that’s not even touching on if you are actually being violent, in which case you will probably wind up dead and the property own untouched because of the castle doctrine.
In a public space, not all speech is protected either. I’d look up “fighting words” if I were you.
Tabris on June 1, 2009 at 9:27 PM
When you vote for a candidate, you promote certain policies. Yet, the vote is anonymous to prevent intimidation and reprisal by those who may not like the way you just voted. There are curtains on voting booths for just this reason. Petitions are votes for a specific motion. Unfortunately, they have to be signed. And because they are, these fascists want to use that information to intimidate the voters.

At some point these bully tactics have to be put to a stop by the silent majority. If a person can no longer voice their opinions without fear of intimidation and reprisal, this country has entered the dark ages. Some are escalating this kind of thing to a dangerous level and it’s up to the adults in this nation to put an end to it.
It cannot be acceptable to threaten and intimidate citizens who are exercising their constitutionally protected rights. We are all hurt when the voices of others are silenced through informal censorship. The issues and content may change, but the tactics and motives remain the same.

So you believe in women having a consequence-free choice to dump their newborns in trash bins (it’s just a late-late-term abortion after all!) and that we should also allow polygamy?
Oh wait, you don’t believe in those things? But they’re just one half-step up from what you agree with right now. It’s not that far for you.
Let me guess… the truth is you believe that polygamists are something to be abhorred because they’re “different” and “weird”. You believe that polygamists can’t take care of their children properly? You believe that bigamists should still go to jail? You believe that mothers who give birth and then dump their children in trash bins shouldn’t have that “freedom” of choice and should go to jail?
And here you are sounding all “progressive”, when what you really mean is “I don’t want to offend the more mainstream lifestyle choices that exist right now.”

This is no way to win friends and influence people. The activists keep up these tactics, and 85% of the country again will take a very dim view of their cause.

I’m not going to post it myself. Simply because I don’t want to.
However, if I decide to work on implementing some law (as in force other people to live according to rules I propose), then I will not expect privacy.
Clearly, there are some limits to what constitutes a “peaceful protest” and what is an abuse. I can safely say that not any protest is abuse, though.

If you’re out to make a splash, gay cheri,
Do know your haberdashery!
Buttons, buckles, ruffles and lace
Represent the gay social scene race!
Be an example to your sex
Give your boot a dapper strap
And it’s smarter if your garter has some snap!
A cravat should be flounced about your neck
Wear a nightcap when you nap
Be bewitching with some stitching on your cap!
Now, drape your cape
And puff your cuff
Embroider those lapels!
Be the new king of the gay social scene in pastels!
Draw your britches in quite tight
Even more so, and your torso will ignite
Now, smock your frock
Perfume your plume
And let your waistcoat swing!
And the gay social scene will bow to its new king!

You will be “forcing” us religious folk to acknowledge “your” definition of marriage, after all. I await this with great anticipation!

I believe some in the gay community are distancing themselves from the likes of Perez Hilton for the very fact that his flambouancy is turning lots of folks off of the gay marriage cause. Also, Perez has been all over Adam Lambert from American Idol because Adam hasn’t yelled from the roof top that he is gay. Perez is a nut case.
