Current federal government debt per household: $546,688

Ace despairs at the figures but I feel about this the way lefties felt when gas was more than four bucks a gallon and heading north: The higher the numbers go, the better. They figured only a full-blown meltdown would force a paradigm shift from fossil fuels to green energy; similarly, people like Robert Samuelson realize that only bankrupting Medicare and Social Security will make Congress face the fact that the two programs — which account for 81 percent of the debt load, per USA Today’s chart — will collapse under the weight of baby boomers. Everyone knows it, including and especially our chief creditor, so let’s get on with it.
China is the biggest foreign owner of U.S. Treasury bonds. U.S. data shows that it held $768 billion in Treasuries as of March, but some analysts believe China’s total U.S. dollar-denominated investments could be twice as high.
“Chinese assets are very safe,” Geithner said in response to a question after a speech at Peking University, where he studied Chinese as a student in the 1980s.
His answer drew loud laughter from his student audience, reflecting scepticism in China about the wisdom of a developing country accumulating a vast stockpile of foreign reserves instead of spending the money to raise living standards at home.
The $546K figure is based on current debt only, mind you. It doesn’t include universal health care or the fact that the FDIC’s going bust and will need to bailed out. According to some back-of-the-envelope math at the Atlantic, even with a hypothetical interest rate of 0 percent, each household now owes $22,274 per year … for the next 30 years. Average U.S. household income as of 2007: $50,233. Won’t be long now until the reckoning. Exit question: Blame Bush? Or blame Reagan?

And it’s the rosey scenario.
Here’s the problem with USA Today’s analysis.
They equate household debt (mortgage, etal) with federal debt. As if they are the same thing.
People work to pay off their debt. Government works to add more to the federal debt.

Just when I think you’re starting to wake up…
Are you kidding me? Hardly anyone knows it. The American public is more clueless than ever. Most are completely oblivious to the fact that Obama is currently deliberately bankrupting the country. And by the way, a paradigm shift will not matter. We’re too far gone to ever recover from what he’s doing to this country. I can’t believe there are so many “2012ers” holding on to hope out there.

Blame Roosevelt for giving us Social Security. And blame Johnson for opening the door to Congress, allowing them “borrow” money from the trust fund to pay for other programs–and, of course, now they can’t pay it back.
And now blame Obama for pushing through his campaign agenda in spite of our current economic situation.

A start: Republicans sponsor a bill to cut by 5% all the salaries and 10% all the perks of members of Congress and the administration, then cap the perks at that rate and freeze all salaries of federal workers.
Until passed, Republicans should voluntarily cut their use of taxpayers’ dollars for any expense that average Americans would have to pay out of our own pockets.

What happens if we admit defeat and simply cancel medicaid and social security? How long would it take to pay the debt down if we simply canceled those two programs? That is, how much of the “debt” is the cost of what we are committed to pay throught the terms of the programs, and how much of it is money we’ve actually borrowed?

deidre on June 1, 2009 at 5:54 PM
The Chinese are laughing at us. Yep, that is change all right.
Samuelson also talked about the fawning media.
Years ago during the farm crisis, I took exception with some of Samuelson’s writing on agriculture and I sent him a letter. He responded. His typing was worse than mine {believe it or not} and he wrote in the margins and crossed things out, but I was so impressed that he would actually respond to a letter that I wrote him again. And he responded again.
The point being that Samuelson is not some rightie tool. The Obamabots might think that no one notices that they are part of a cult, but that is not true. More and more people are seeing it. And as these numbers begin to sink in, people might stop blaming Bush and start paying more attention to what the Boy King is doing.
The media can only cover up so much for so long.

You’re going to need every round. The cities will empty out as people head for the rurals, thinking there will be fresh apple pie and smiling farmers handing out chickens and baskets of sweet corn.
Even hunting and fishing will become difficult; the big lake I have a cabin on can’t support thousands of extra people dropping a line in the water. It will be ugly because no one knows how to “survive” any more.
