Breaking: Soldier murdered in Arkansas; Update: Shooter a Muslim convert, opponent of military; Update: “Studied” in Yemen?

A gunman with an assault rifle targeted a military recruitment office today in Little Rock, Arkansas, killing one of the recruiters and wounded another.  Police arrested a suspect, but details are still sketchy:

One Army recruiter was killed Monday and a second was wounded in a shooting at a recruiting office, and a suspect was arrested, police said.

Police Lt. Terry Hastings said the recruiter was shot when a man in a black SUV opened fire on the office in west Little Rock at about 10:30 a.m.

The vehicle was stopped on Interstate 630 a short time later and a suspect was taken into custody. Hastings said the suspect pulled over and surrendered without incident.

Police said they found an assault rifle in the vehicle.

We’ll update the story as developments hit the wires.  The AP reported that police found “packages” in the SUV the suspect used to get away from the murder scene.  A bomb-disposal unit got called to the scene, but no report yet on what they found.

This could have any of several different motives: political, personal, insanity.  I’d caution against reading too much into it until we hear more from the police.  We’ll be keeping an eye on it.

Update: More here from KATV:

Authorities say the incident occurred around 10:00 a.m. at a U.S. Army Navy Career Center inside the Ashley Square Shopping Center at 9112 North Rodney Parham Road. According to Lt. Terry Hastings with the Little Rock Police Department, two enlisted soldiers standing outside the office were hit when the unidentified suspect drove up and began shooting.

Both of the wounded were taken to a nearby hospital, where one of the victims died a short time later, according to police.

Update II: This Ain’t Hell says the victim was a recruit just back from basic training, and not the recruiter.  I’ve adjusted the title accordingly.

Update III: The murder victim has been identified as William Long, and the other victim as Quenton Ezeagwula.  Keep them and their families in your prayers tonight.

Update IV: Police have identified the shooter as Carlos Bledsoe, but that’s not what he’s calling himself these days:

A Muslim convert who said he was opposed to the U.S. military shot two soldiers outside an Arkansas recruiting station, killing one of the soldiers, police said Monday.

“This individual appears to have been upset with the military, the Army in particular, and that’s why he did what he did,” Little Rock Police Lt. Terry Hastings said in a phone interview.

“He has converted to Muslim here in the past few years,” Hastings said. “To be honest we’re not completely clear on what he was upset about. He had never been in the military.”

Hastings identified the man in custody as Carlos Bledsoe, 24, of Little Rock, who was going by the name of Abdul Hakim Mujahid Muhammad. He did not have further details. The names of the soldiers were not released, nor was the condition of the wounded soldier.

Gateway Pundit wonders whether this is “sudden jihadi syndrome”.  Breitbart reports that Bledsoe aka Muhammad will get charged with one count of murder — and 15 counts of terrorism.  I’m sure we will have more as this develops.

Update V: Robert Spencer hears that the shooter studied Islam abroad — in Yemen.  He’s trying to get more details on it now.

IMPORTANT!!

Michelle links to an article that states that the Killer Muhammed recently spent some time in Nashville.

NASHVILLE WAS THE CITY WHERE GEERT WILDERS WAS JUST LAST WEEK TO SHOW HIS FILM FITNA.

One hotel cancelled the confernce. But Wilders moved the showing to another undisclosed location.

Nashville is also home to a large population of recent Somali immigrants. The Federal Government settles them there in a special relocation program.

There’s a Somali Muslim compound 14 miles south of Nasvhille that many suspect promotes Jihad.

Yesterday, an abortion doctor was killed. Within hours Obama issued a statement of condemnation. Today, two soldiers were shot and one was killed. Has Obama, the CIC, issued a statement on how we need to solve our differences without violence, in condemnation of this act?

Angry mobs screaming “RELIGION of PEACE!!!”

Upstater85 on June 1, 2009 at 10:49 PM

Would love to know how much CAIR was involved with any of this. These people protect and encourage much of the anti-American sentiments from Muslims much like La Raza encourages a large amount of unrest with illegals and both desire less stringent laws. Neither of these two groups want any of our laws enforced!

I would be shocked if this does not happen more often. The current Administration has indicated they have no desire to stop any actions remotely involving terrorism. As many have stated, the current Administration has completely erased the term, “terrorism”. That is except for those listed on or in the DHS memo. Those groups are considered “terrorist” types, or threats to the nation. Meanwhile, radical Islam is not. Our world is totally upside down! TOTALLY!!!!!!!

What happens when all those in prison are released who have also been converted? Are they not also a danger needing to be watched? Who converted this dude? Where has he been as of late? How did HE get the guns? Which groups has he been a member of? Anyone hearing any of THESE questions being asked? Nope, but they are asking which pro-life groups this Roeder nut was affiliated with!

May God be with these families!

freeus on June 1, 2009 at 10:49 PM

I am saddened and outraged. Where is the MSM on this one?

Deepest condolences for the soldier who died and the soldier that was wounded.

One of our best and bravest taken down in middle America.

His poor family, God bless them.

FireBlogger on June 1, 2009 at 11:00 PM

First of all, my prayers go out to those soldiers and their families. This is a disgusting tragedy to have to endure while serving their country right here at home.

Second point… wasn’t there a hate crime bill not too long ago that had an amendment proposed which would allow for greater protection for members of the military? Wasn’t that proposal scoffed at and derided, specifically by that harpy congresswoman from Florida, who felt her district was more representative of the “true victims” of hate?

Now, I’m not really a proponent of special penalties for victims who fall within all these “chosen groups.” A crime is a crime. Violence on another person is hateful no matter what the circumstances. But, if there are going to be special classes who are afforded greater protections, and apparently there are, then the brave men and women who valiantly serve and sacrifice for their country, and for the sake of those of us who don’t, damn well deserve that extra protection!

baldilocks on June 1, 2009 at 10:28 PM

Unfortunately for Obama, I don’t think “no comment” is an option on this one since our soldiers who are currently fighting a war against radical Islam are expecting a strong statement from their CinC. And with the timing of this so close on the heels of the abortionist killing, his comments will be compared and the Islam apologist approach that he would normally be inclined to take would be a huge problem for him right now.

Maybe something big will happen in the next few hours that will spare Obama the necessity of commenting on this and telling us how he will prevent it from happening in the future.

Of course it is nothing new to watch a democrat take any situation,no matter how sensitive, and try to use it for political advantage.
But this political chutzpah from Obama in not giving our Military the same rapid response and attention is so transparent that it is sure to resonate within the military community quickly and then the rest of the Nation that holds our men and women in uniform as honored Americans.

How could this administration be so callous and so stupid.

Is Obama so concerned about offending the al-jazeera crowd during his Muslim apology speech/tour that he is going to dis-respect and turn his back on an American Soldier by not showing them the same amount of concern than he would show for an abortion doctor.

Unbelievably pathetic.

These types of actions are not new from the anti-war crowd.
If they are not vandalizing and bombing our recruiting stations, they are joining in with the terrorist in trying to kill our Soldiers:

Patriotism Alert: Airman Shot In Heart By Anti-War Protestor; MSM Covers Up Anti-War Motive

http://michellemalkin.com/2007/07/10/update-airman-shot-by-unhinged-anti-war-gunman-in-serious-but-stable-condition/

this 22 year old guy walked up to him and asked him if he lived in the house. When Jon said yes, the guy said “not any more” and shot him point blank in the chest. He tried to shoot him again, but his gun jammed. Jonathan made it into the house. The guy then shot himself. Turns out the guy left a couple of suicide notes stating how much he hated the military and he wanted to go out making a statement, so he chose to make his statement on Independence Day trying to kill a soldier.

How progressive!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bush-Hating “Peace Activist” & AX MURDERER Sentenced

Peace activist Carlos Hartmann, 41, of Michigan was seeking to punish the Netherlands for its support of the war in Iraq. So, Carlos ambushed a 22-year-old Dutch student with an ax after failing to find a soldier to kill.

Oops, hadn’t even seen this post, and I just commented on the story in the “O’Reilly being attacked for Tiller murder” story. I noted that I won’t wade in to the Kos and HuffPo sewers to see if they’re smearing military haters for today’s murder (because they’d have to go after themselves). Now, after seeing that he’s a Muslim convert, I know they’ll NEVER go after him. At best they’ll cover the story only to show how it is this country’s fault somehow.

Yet another “lone gunman”… right! (I’m not saying he’s part of a cell, I just can’t count the number of these incidents where a “lone” Muslim killed innocent people, and the media doesn’t want to talk about Islamic terror, just “lone gunmen”.

Interesting… I lived in Nashville from 2001-2006 and after being in one apartment for about a year I got a piece of mail that I opened without looking where it was from (thinking it was just junk) and it turned out to be the immigration papers of someone with a very Muslim name (which I won’t disclose in case they’re completely innocent of anything). The apartment complex people said he had never lived in my place and I saw no neighbors who would have fit the name. If I recall there was some sort of court date.

At any rate, I reported it to ICE. Just seemed fishy. Like someone gave a bogus address to get a student visa or something, and then went off the radar when they got here.

ABC: Recruiter Shooting Suspect Under FBI Investigation
Man Accused of Killing One Recruiter, Wounding Another, Spent Time in Yemen

The suspect arrested in the fatal shooting of one soldier and the critical injury of another at a Little Rock, Ark., Army recruiting booth today was under investigation by the FBI’s Joint Terrorist Task Force since his return from Yemen, ABC News has learned.

The investigation was in its preliminary stages, authorities said, and was based on the suspect’s travel to Yemen and his arrest there for using a Somali passport.

But the [suspect's] car was loaded with a small arsenal. Officers who searched the car found more than 100 rounds of ammunition, an SKS assault rifle, two pistols, and two military books.

The ammunition was loaded in magazines which were found in a vest, police sources say.

Where is Eric Holder to deploy the US Marshalls to protect domestic military loctions and staff?

Delcaration of War against the United States – 1998 – Osama Bin Laden

[snip]

On that basis, and in compliance with God’s order, we issue the following fatwa to all Muslims

The ruling to kill the Americans and their allies–civilians and military–is an individual duty for every Muslim who can do it in any country in which it is possible to do it, in order to liberate the al-Aqsa Mosque and the holy mosque from their grip, and in order for their armies to move out of all the lands of Islam, defeated and unable to threaten any Muslim. This is in accordance with the words of Almighty God, “and fight the pagans all together as they fight you all together,” and “fight them until there is no more tumult or oppression, and there prevail justice and faith in God.”

We — with God’s help — call on every Muslim who believes in God and wishes to be rewarded to comply with God’s order to kill the Americans and plunder their money wherever and whenever they find it. We also call on Muslim ulema, leaders, youths, and soldiers to launch the raid on Satan’s U.S. troops and the devil’s supporters allying with them, and to displace those who are behind them so that they may learn a lesson.

One Pro-Lifer murders one abortion doctor = ALL Pro-Lifers are dangerous murderers. Vilify anybody who opposes sticking scissors into the back of a baby’s head as a probable nutjob who will most likely kill other abortion doctors.

Yet another Muslim wantonly kills for no apparent reason = Amrica’s chickens coming home to roost [wring hands]… commence study on why it’s our fault… hug the nearest Imam you can get your hands on.

Two things.
The first is that I too suspected the guy was Muslim. Although, really, it doesn’t matter what he is, an innocent man is dead. If the FBI had him in their sights and he committed an act of terrorism, I don’t feel real safe.

Secondly, Obama, at some point, is going to jump the shark. His treatment of the two killings will not be missed by those everyday folks who voted for him.

No, he’ll call for calm and “reach out” to the Muslim community to apologize for any implication that Islam may have had anything to do with this… or any of the thousands of similar acts over the last ten years.

Meanwhile… he’ll reinforce the notion that “Pro-Life rhetoric” is responsible for the one, very-targeted murder of a prolific abortionist (we’re up to one every 10 years).

Has anyone seen CNN do a TV report that reveals the suspect was waging jihad? There’s one article on the CNN website, but it’s buried. Not listed on the home page with dozens of imporant headlines like, ‘Cell phone elbow’ damages nerves.

Suspect Pleads Not Guilty To Recruitment Shooting

A Muslim convert accused of killing a soldier in a “political and religious” attack on a military recruiting center pleaded not guilty Tuesday to a capital murder charge and was ordered held without bail.

Abdulhakim Muhammad, 23, of Little Rock, was charged in Monday’s death of Pvt. William Long, 23, of Conway outside an Army-Navy Career Center in a west Little Rock shopping center.

A prosecutor said Muhammad admitted shooting Long and another soldier “because of what they had done to Muslims in the past.”

to answer some questions on arkansas + death penalty (posted this in the other thread as well)

Just about the ONLY good thing from this case is that YES Arkansas HAS and USES the death penalty.

As an Arkansan myself I can assure you, the state may elect democrats from dog-catcher up to governor, but they are the “how much camo and singing choirs can i put in my campaign ads” kind of democrats. Conservative blue dogs till the end (so we vote D on a state level and R on the national level)

One thing every governor has done for as long as I’ve been alive is USE the death penalty.

The only controversey about the death penalty in Arkansas has been the uproar when it HASNT been used. Huck-a-sham commuted some guy’s sentence because he claimed he had become a Christian or something, and it caused a major stink.

A very popular news anchor, young lady in her 20s, was brutally murdered in her Little Rock home last fall. All I heard when they arrested the guy (looked like a typical thug — not by his race but by his tattoos, unshaven appearance, and hair they showed on all the tv reports) was “that **** will be dead in 5 years” or “man i’d give anythinig to be on that jury”

Yes Little Rock is in the “liberal” county, but some of that stems from it being the county with a large black population that votes for Dems. When it’s time for a jury deciding about the fate of a fallen soldier (and i think the wounded soldier, the one who survived, was black), it’s not a “race” thing; There’s no racial divide in Arkansas with the military, it’s just accepted as an excellent govt institution

Sorry for the rant, too much information…

just letting you know:

A) arkansas has the death penalty
B) arkansas USES the death penalty
C) there’s an 100% chance this guy (if convicted) will be dead by 2015-2020, emphasis on the former

Seriously we need to relax for the time being, this is most likely a lone wolf scenario

yeah, kind of like the Mehmet Ali Ağca was a lone wolf

Cindy Sheehan and Randall Terry should be locked up and forced to share a cell for 6 months.

AprilOrit on June 1, 2009 at 6:26 PM

Yeah, let’s criminalize speech.

I’m not believing the number of people who are bending over backward to avoid any possible charge of racism with regard to their comments. “Thug,” my ass.
This was a black man who joined a black muslim sect – so as not to have any of you morons confuse it with any of the white muslims that we all see everywhere – a group that has historically blamed whitey for all their many problems.

Venusian Visitor on June 1, 2009 at 9:25 PM

I’m not believing the number of people misconstruing the conversation, especially those who don’t even have the intellectual honesty to make sure they know what they’re talking about while calling me a moron.

Here’s the short of it, Venusian. The man doesn’t LOOK like a thug. He may BE a thug, but that’s something else altogether. If you don’t know the difference between those two verbs, that’s really not my problem.

I missed the thug debate. I saw a photo of him captioned low-life thug. My immediate thoughts was that he looked pretty clean for a thug. But, that he had that buffed look that one gets working out in the prison yard. I’d have to check him for tats and a rap.

Blake on June 2, 2009 at 9:59 AM

That was pretty much our point, not that he isn’t a thug but that (at least in that picture) he doesn’t look like one. That was really all it was, and some tried to turn it into something else.

I’ve watched MSNBC all morning just to see the reporting on this. Hard to sit through, but as of yet not one report. Funny huh?

yakwill83 on June 2, 2009 at 11:12 AM

“how much camo and singing choirs can i put in my campaign ads” kind of democrats.

In Alabama, Dems knock each other over trying to scream how pro-Life and pro-death penalty they are (except in certain parts of the state).

mankai on June 2, 2009 at 11:13 AM

I’m pretty sure Olberrmann, Maddow & company incited this heinous act with their relentless rants on military abuses.

Napolitano might want to go back and look at those memos on islamic terrorist threats. Oh, that’s right, they only did left-wing and right-wing. Nothing on Muslim extremists.

hawksruleva on June 2, 2009 at 11:20 AM

Call Napolitano. The DHS doesn’t listen to conservative radio and probably hasn’t heard about this.

She calimed vets had a predisposition to killing. It looks like vets are the opposite and the target of the real killers. Looks like she gets some concepts but has the parties wrong. Muslims kill and vets are peace keepers.

All conservative media should be talking about nothing else but this and demanding that Obama promise Americans that this will not happen again and explain the steps he will take to ensure it doesn’t happen again.

usually i disagree with these sorts of ‘hanging on to one story’ thing, because then we miss other equally important stories, but i TOTALLY agree with you here!

obama is COMMANDER IN CHIEF, this poor kid was home as part of a “hometown recruiting” thing, he was enlisted and swore to protect this COUNTRY>..

…and obama is silent.

Why the F@#$ did he have some statement about the abortion mengele doctor at all? POLITICS.

Now he NEEDS to make one about HIS soldier…. and

CRICKETS!

battleoflepanto1571 on June 2, 2009 at 11:46 AM

More political violence, personal vendetta, or just insanity?

Anybody not born Muslim who chooses to convert is obviously profoundly mentally unstable. So the latter part of that question is unnecessary.

i once saw a campus tv thing where it had the ‘muslim students assocation’ and there was a white blond girl (hippy type, i must say) chanting with them.

the campus reporter noticed the odd sight as well, and asked the blond ” are you here in support of there causes?”, and the girl responded “no, i’m a muslim”

the reporter said “by birth?”, and the blond said “no, i converted to islam a few months after 9/11. i saw what a beautiful religion it is with all the coverage of what islam really meant in the days after 9/11, so i converted”

W.T.F.

Sad thing is, idiots like her? they vote.
