Breaking: Soldier murdered in Arkansas; Update: Shooter a Muslim convert, opponent of military; Update: “Studied” in Yemen?

A gunman with an assault rifle targeted a military recruitment office today in Little Rock, Arkansas, killing one of the recruiters and wounded another.  Police arrested a suspect, but details are still sketchy:

One Army recruiter was killed Monday and a second was wounded in a shooting at a recruiting office, and a suspect was arrested, police said.

Police Lt. Terry Hastings said the recruiter was shot when a man in a black SUV opened fire on the office in west Little Rock at about 10:30 a.m.

The vehicle was stopped on Interstate 630 a short time later and a suspect was taken into custody. Hastings said the suspect pulled over and surrendered without incident.

Police said they found an assault rifle in the vehicle.

We’ll update the story as developments hit the wires.  The AP reported that police found “packages” in the SUV the suspect used to get away from the murder scene.  A bomb-disposal unit got called to the scene, but no report yet on what they found.

This could have any of several different motives: political, personal, insanity.  I’d caution against reading too much into it until we hear more from the police.  We’ll be keeping an eye on it.

Update: More here from KATV:

Authorities say the incident occurred around 10:00 a.m. at a U.S. Army Navy Career Center inside the Ashley Square Shopping Center at 9112 North Rodney Parham Road. According to Lt. Terry Hastings with the Little Rock Police Department, two enlisted soldiers standing outside the office were hit when the unidentified suspect drove up and began shooting.

Both of the wounded were taken to a nearby hospital, where one of the victims died a short time later, according to police.

Update II: This Ain’t Hell says the victim was a recruit just back from basic training, and not the recruiter.  I’ve adjusted the title accordingly.

Update III: The murder victim has been identified as William Long, and the other victim as Quenton Ezeagwula.  Keep them and their families in your prayers tonight.

Update IV: Police have identified the shooter as Carlos Bledsoe, but that’s not what he’s calling himself these days:

A Muslim convert who said he was opposed to the U.S. military shot two soldiers outside an Arkansas recruiting station, killing one of the soldiers, police said Monday.

“This individual appears to have been upset with the military, the Army in particular, and that’s why he did what he did,” Little Rock Police Lt. Terry Hastings said in a phone interview.

“He has converted to Muslim here in the past few years,” Hastings said. “To be honest we’re not completely clear on what he was upset about. He had never been in the military.”

Hastings identified the man in custody as Carlos Bledsoe, 24, of Little Rock, who was going by the name of Abdul Hakim Mujahid Muhammad. He did not have further details. The names of the soldiers were not released, nor was the condition of the wounded soldier.

Gateway Pundit wonders whether this is “sudden jihadi syndrome”.  Breitbart reports that Bledsoe aka Muhammad will get charged with one count of murder — and 15 counts of terrorism.  I’m sure we will have more as this develops.

Update V: Robert Spencer hears that the shooter studied Islam abroad — in Yemen.  He’s trying to get more details on it now.

Abdul Hakim Mujahid Muhammad, 24, of Little Rock. Thomas says Muhammad also goes by the name Carlos Bledsoe.

Wow. How many were surprised by this? Or the fact that he is black. Another Nation of Islam prison recruit or real Islamic prison recruit.

Driveby’s for Allah!

So should we be calling this the first act of Islamic terrorism in the U.S. since 9/11 and the aftermath of mailings or are there other smaller incidences like this I’m missing? Either way it won’t look good for Obama to have 2 domestic terrorist acts happen almost within hours of each other in the first months of his presidency….

Damn left wing extremist.

Amadeus on June 1, 2009 at 7:45 PM

My prayers are with their families. How disheartening.

I wonder if Obama will say something about this? Hope this is as big of deal as Dr. Tiller’s murder. Unfortunately, I think it will be downplayed, however. It is unfortunate.

deidre on June 1, 2009 at 7:47 PM

Some site have been quick to paint all pro-life people as “guilty” for Tiller’s murder, I wonder if they will paint all muslims or black muslim converts with the “guilty” brush?

clnurnberg on June 1, 2009 at 7:49 PM

I believe that is why there was so much anger toward the whole deal with Tiller yesterday. Honestly, I didn’t shed a tear for him and obama made sure to comment on the death of a man who’s business, infanticide, he wanted to protect.
Now, a soldier, is killed and what do we have from the White House? Crickets.
This is where the anger comes from: The evil is condoned and the good is condemned.

Will do. It will be really ironic if this alleged killer is American born…I mean, what with the soldiers willingness to die for his freedoms…they just didn’t expect to die by his hand in their own country.

Coincidentally, Abdul Hakim Mujahid is a high ranking Taliban official. Of course, certain names are common in the Muslim world, so Abdul Hakim Mujahid Muhammad, FKA Carlos Bledso, probably has no connection to his namesake or the Taliban, other than a similar behavior pattern.

Steven Johnson, an 18-year-old recruit, was on his way to take a qualifying test when he found police cars at the scene. By early afternoon, Johnson was waiting patiently outside the yellow police tape that was blocking access to the office.

“I’m going to check and see if they’re all right,” he said.

I wonder how many hours young Steven Johnson waited, just to make sure the rest of the people at the Little Rock recruitment Center were all right?

Where do you find such dedicated young men like this?

Why are such young men so often ignored and even sneered upon by the media?

Such young men, one of whom was lost today, are among our greatest national assets, to be honored and treasured.

Gee I wonder what would happen if we started making the same vast connections about his religion and its teachings that the left are making about Conservatives and that abortion doctor. I wonder hmmmmmm?

Look seriously, a tragedy in both situations and may both murderers be punished to the fullest extent the law allows. But I had to bring that detail up.

I have just one question.

Will this person get as swift and sure an application of justice as the activist militantterrorist who shot Tiller?

Neither one deserves anything less than execution, but Tiller at least provoked someone. Did that poor Soldier do anything to anyone?

Just askin’.

Foreshadowing…..

blatantblue on June 1, 2009 at 8:24 PM

We’ll see what position this gets in tomorrow’s paper, probably in the back of the paper, way behind where Tiller’s story was.

NoDonkey on June 1, 2009 at 8:24 PM

I guess local law enforcement didn’t read the DHS report on African-American Muslim prison converts that I’m sure was issued.

I’d also point out that an SKS is not by an assault rifle and the media got that part of the story wrong once again, if only so that argument can’t be used by gun control advocates yet again.

As for these two young soldiers, I hope that God has mercy upon both men and their families.

Police: Recruiting Center Gunman Targeted Military

According to Noah Trister, The Associated Press, the suspect had “political and religious motives.” However, where those motives came from and where they might lead are unclear, because Mr. Trister never mentions the words Muslim, Islam, or convert. However, at least the report includes a form of the suspect’s name, “Abdulhakim Mujahid Muhammad,” so a reader might get a clue.

Let me say my heart and prayers go out to their families. My soul feels ripped apart in empathy for these 2 victims. Yesterday the president made a statement “Obama says violence is not the answer to resolve differing opinions on abortion and said the shooting is a murder.” In light of his promised “rebooting” America’s damaged relationship with the world’s 1.5 billion Muslims” quest later this week does anyone know of any statement forthcoming from the whitehouse condemning this act of terrorism against our soldiers in our own land by a radical muslim?

Considering recent news, the ‘New Black Panthers’ would be a better fit.

So should we be calling this the first act of Islamic terrorism in the U.S. since 9/11 and the aftermath of mailings or are there other smaller incidences like this I’m missing?

There was an incident in Oklahoma (I think) a couple of years ago that was classified a suicide, but if you dig into the details – explosive vest packed with ball bearings – it looks more like a mistimed homicide bombing. The explosion occurred outside of a stadium, just before the crowds started spilling out into the area that the bomber was in.

I seem to remember a couple of others – mainly mow-downs using cars. Can anyone compile a list?

I am shocked and outraged by the murder of Dr. George Tiller as he attended church services this morning. However profound our differences as Americans over difficult issues such as abortion, they cannot be resolved by heinous acts of violence.

Where are Obama’s words regarding the American Soldier gunned down today in front of a recruiting station???

That makes me angry that Obama has no words of condemnation against the far left radical who gunned down an honorable soldier.

Arkansas does have the death penalty. Unfortunately the crime occured in Pulaski County which is the most liberal county in the state. Pulaski county juries don’t give the death penalty to cop killers. I don’t have much confidence in him getting the death penalty. I really don’t have much confidence in AG Eric Holder if it goes federal though.

I’m not believing the number of people who are bending over backward to avoid any possible charge of racism with regard to their comments. “Thug,” my ass. This was a black man who joined a black muslim sect – so as not to have any of you morons confuse it with any of the white muslims that we all see everywhere – a group that has historically blamed whitey for all their many problems. And he went out and shot dead a white boy from Conway to make a political point. There’s plenty of racism involved in this story, but it’s not on the side of the people making the “thug” comments. The racism was all on the side of Murdering Mohammad.

If the situation were reversed and this was a KKK clown that shot a black Federal employee, the Left would be having a field day with white this and whitey’s are all secret Klansmen and Hate Crime Hate Crime Hate Crime!!!

Racism is a word used by the left as a weapon to rachet up white guilt over black failure and misdeeds, and with which to nullify any discussion of the very real phenomenon of black racism in America. And, more ominously, it is a tool used by the manipulators to keep black and white social conservatives from joining forces. Divide et Imperia, y’know?

When one comes in after the argument is over, one has a skewed view of how the thread unfolded. No one knew that the guy was a Muslim convert when the argument about whether the guy looked like a thug or not was going on.

Wow, that spokesman was so very very anxious to point out that they knew nothing yet as the investigation is ongoing but that it was sure he acted alone, planned it alone, it was only for today, there was no one else involved…..this must be a very singular unattached, unaffiliated disenfranchised newly minted little Muslim brown person isolated from …everything truly Islamic.

Obama will adopt the policy of Bush for this as well. Piss your pants to distance any act like this from Islam, Muslims and especially the sacred Saudis who are responsible for young Mister Mohammeds Epiphany that set him on his road of religious martyrdom today. This will vanish. It is the accepted wastage to keep the peace and go along to get along with the grievances of Muslims world wide.

If your a tard, now is the time to reflect on your cultures root responsibility for the agony that Muslims must feel to drive them to such anguished acts as todays. Perhaps higher pay and better equipment might not help in every instance.

Yeah, who gives a fig the race…a soldier was killed by a fanatic…race is not an issue.

A soldier was murdered. He was ready to die to defend the freedoms of the man who murdered him…he just didn’t expect the murderer to be an American, nor did he expect to die in America.

My God bless the family of the dead soldier; may God bless the wounded soldier and his family; may God bless the family of the shooter.

And may GOD have mercy on his soul…

Is anyone reporrting this? I watched my usual childhood tv fare this afternoon, the 3 Stooges at 4 to 7 PM on CNN, and they failed to mention it.

I would be interested in where the killer was introduced to Islam. I guess all that information will be coming.

Cindy Munford on June 1, 2009 at 10:01 PM

Anti-War terrorists don’t care about race, just the person that is performing military acts. IMO.

sybilll on June 1, 2009 at 9:56 PM

Anti-war terrorist?! He was a f*cking Muslim Mujaheddin doing his bit for Allah and Islam. He thinks that no matter what happens to him now he has his virgins waiting for him. Why cant anyone call a f*cking spade a f*cking spade?

As a personal name, Quinton comes from a differently spelled Old French and Norman place name, “Quentin,” after Saint Quentin, a 3rd century Roman missionary to Gaul who was martyred by being beheaded.

Life is full of strange coincidences.

I’m glad Quinton Ezeagwula was not martyred, and pray for him and those who love him.

He is a little info on what the Anti-war terrorist has going on in his ideologies backstory.

Looks like the other shoe has dropped…now, back to wall-to-wall Tiller coverage on the MSM stations.

AUINSC on June 1, 2009 at 10:08 PM

Chalk up another casualty to the religion of peace.

TheSitRep on June 1, 2009 at 10:09 PM

blatantblue on June 1, 2009 at 10:09 PM

Not surprised. Expected this, but would not say it earlier because I would have been attacked for it.

I hope he and Tiller’s killer spend much time LOCKED UP.

Is there still time to save gitmo?
