Breaking: Soldier murdered in Arkansas; Update: Shooter a Muslim convert, opponent of military; Update: “Studied” in Yemen?

posted at 2:17 pm on June 1, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

A gunman with an assault rifle targeted a military recruitment office today in Little Rock, Arkansas, killing one of the recruiters and wounded another.  Police arrested a suspect, but details are still sketchy:

One Army recruiter was killed Monday and a second was wounded in a shooting at a recruiting office, and a suspect was arrested, police said.

Police Lt. Terry Hastings said the recruiter was shot when a man in a black SUV opened fire on the office in west Little Rock at about 10:30 a.m.

The vehicle was stopped on Interstate 630 a short time later and a suspect was taken into custody. Hastings said the suspect pulled over and surrendered without incident.

Police said they found an assault rifle in the vehicle.

We’ll update the story as developments hit the wires.  The AP reported that police found “packages” in the SUV the suspect used to get away from the murder scene.  A bomb-disposal unit got called to the scene, but no report yet on what they found.

This could have any of several different motives: political, personal, insanity.  I’d caution against reading too much into it until we hear more from the police.  We’ll be keeping an eye on it.

Update: More here from KATV:

Authorities say the incident occurred around 10:00 a.m. at a U.S. Army Navy Career Center inside the Ashley Square Shopping Center at 9112 North Rodney Parham Road. According to Lt. Terry Hastings with the Little Rock Police Department, two enlisted soldiers standing outside the office were hit when the unidentified suspect drove up and began shooting.

Both of the wounded were taken to a nearby hospital, where one of the victims died a short time later, according to police.

Update II: This Ain’t Hell says the victim was a recruit just back from basic training, and not the recruiter.  I’ve adjusted the title accordingly.

Update III: The murder victim has been identified as William Long, and the other victim as Quenton Ezeagwula.  Keep them and their families in your prayers tonight.

Update IV: Police have identified the shooter as Carlos Bledsoe, but that’s not what he’s calling himself these days:

A Muslim convert who said he was opposed to the U.S. military shot two soldiers outside an Arkansas recruiting station, killing one of the soldiers, police said Monday.

“This individual appears to have been upset with the military, the Army in particular, and that’s why he did what he did,” Little Rock Police Lt. Terry Hastings said in a phone interview.

“He has converted to Muslim here in the past few years,” Hastings said. “To be honest we’re not completely clear on what he was upset about. He had never been in the military.”

Hastings identified the man in custody as Carlos Bledsoe, 24, of Little Rock, who was going by the name of Abdul Hakim Mujahid Muhammad. He did not have further details. The names of the soldiers were not released, nor was the condition of the wounded soldier.

Gateway Pundit wonders whether this is “sudden jihadi syndrome”.  Breitbart reports that Bledsoe aka Muhammad will get charged with one count of murder — and 15 counts of terrorism.  I’m sure we will have more as this develops.

Update V: Robert Spencer hears that the shooter studied Islam abroad — in Yemen.  He’s trying to get more details on it now.

Also possible, though unlikely, that the killer may have had a friend or relative die in the service.

Condolences to the murdered home recruiter’s family.
Best wishes to the injured, speedy recovery.

This murderer was not a right wing extremist.

Thanks Esthier. It wouldn’t be the first time I’ve failed to understand that words don’t mean what I think they do.

In regards to the “suspect” I won’t presume to guess why he did what he did. I guess we’ll learn more in time. My hope is that it wasn’t prompted by politics, but rather was a singular, and very sad event.

Will Lefties who generally oppose war have to go on record saying that while it’s okay to eject ROTC units from campus, they don’t necessarily condone murdering military recruiters?

Because that’s what the storyline is for prolifers and one guy who decides to shoot an abortionist.

Weather Underground anyone?

“You’re on the Island of Conclusions.”

“But how did we get here?” asked Milo.

“You jumped, of course,” explained Canby. “That’s the way most everyone gets here. It’s really quite simple: every time you decide something without having a good reason, you jump to Conclusions whether you like it or not. It’s such an easy trip to make that I’ve been here hundreds of times.”

“But this is such an unpleasant looking place,” Milo remarked.

“Yes, that’s true,” admitted Canby; “it does look much better from a distance.”

God damn it, I’ve had it.

If the Little Rock ‘hood were Waco, the ATF would have burned down half the town to get at the hidden weapons caches. But these are not evil white right-wing Branch Davidians who keep guns for self-defense, they’re black hoods, the Holy-of-Holy uncriticizable peak of the sacred diversity pyramid. They probably get federal funding through ACORN.

This country blows.

The internet ate my reference on “thug”. We’ve all experienced thuggery in life (unless you’re spoiled rotten and don’t realize you’re a thug/snark). But as varied as we all are, and our lives vary, a “thug” is what we’ve seen in brutish behavior, and that includes authoritarians.

Thug is from thag, Hindi for thief.
A thug is a ruffian, a gangster.

At least thanks to Hollywood, most people imagine a well dressed, well groomed though violent criminal when they hear “gangster”. When I hear “thug” I think of the German and Italian ruffian Fascists who prided themselves on their appearance and dressed in sharp uniform militant style.

I’m aware of that. Obviously you haven’t read what I’ve written here, or you’d have seen that.

If a thug is judged by his actions, then someone cannot then LOOK like a thug, and that’s what this whole thing was about. I’m not a PC person, and this wasn’t a PC complaint.

As of a few minutes ago, Little Rock Police had not yet to release the names of the victims in today’s shootings at a Recruitment Center, even though crime took place several hours ago. They have yet to identify the suspect either. Little information is known except that one young soldier was killed and another wounded who had volunteered to assist with recruitment in their home town, talking with others about their experience in Boot Camp.

I think you’ve mistaken me with a certain leader

blatantblue on June 1, 2009 at 5:47 PM

I dunno, sometimes you write old.

Of course, sometimes you write 13, too.

ladyingray on June 1, 2009 at 5:50 PM

lol.

It probably all depends on whether he is trying to put the moves on the older ladies or the young ones.

They are all haters.

Killers=haters

Stop them now.

What a brilliant and mature point. I bet you make letter of the month quite frequently in TeenBeat magazine.

Update: Police say Suspect Targeted Military

Just after 5:00 this evening, Little Rock Police say Abulhakin Muhammad, also known as Carlos Bledsoe, is charged with capital murder and 15 counts of terroristic acts after a shooting at an Army/Navy recruitment center on Rodney Parham Road in Little Rock.

Little Rock Police Chief Stuart Thomas says Muhammad targeted military personnel.

I’m late to the discussion, which I am quite happy about, after reading the last three pages of comments.
Thug is what thug does. That is all I have to say about that.
Now, for the ‘suspect’ in this crime. I will bet my right hand ‘bird finger’, my favorite to flip off enemies foreign and domestic, that this Mohammad was recruited in prison, like the suspects that wanted to blow up national guard planes and Temples. They are growing their masses within now, the Jihadist scourge. It is harder, except for the southern border, to get in thru normal means, so why not grow the rot from within the target. Criminals, disenfrancised thugs that have no regard for the law and their fellow citizens.
This will be the new war front. Soft targets, sole perps, total chaos if they hit a school or a mall.

I wonder if Holder will have the US Marshalls guarding recruiting stations the way he has them guarding abortion clinics?

Wow. Looks like it was jihad.

I’m a little puzzled with the words “terroristic acts”. That’s just a strange way to phrase it.

Weight of Glory on June 1, 2009 at 7:00 PM

So the suspect’s name is Mohammad? What are the odds of that?

MB4 on June 1, 2009 at 7:00 PM

terroristic act is when a suspect shoots into an occupiable structure with people inside. There were 15 people inside the center so 15 charges.

So “terroristic acts” is a specific legal phrase? Okay, I see that. THanks.

Weight of Glory on June 1, 2009 at 7:05 PM

When Obama goes on his Grand Muslim Apology Tour Extravaganza, maybe he will apologize for an American named Carlos Bledsoe changing his name to Mohammad just to try to give The Religion of Peace, Islam, a bad name.

MB4 on June 1, 2009 at 7:05 PM

Well well a lefty Tiller-Killer.

Can’t we agree to stop killing? Guess not.

Name: Abdul Hakim Mujahid Muhammad, 24, (interesting)

Just because you think it was justified and everyone of sound mind disagrees – don’t blame me.

Thanks for the compliment though.

I wish I was young enough again to read Teen Beat again, really. If I was and I could go back – I might have the opportunity to live my life differently, eat differently, not have smoked etc and maybe I would not have gotten this horrible Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma that I am stuck with today.

AprilOrit on June 1, 2009 at 7:10 PM

The killer’s a Muslim convert, going on his former and current name.

And four guys like him tried to shoot down an ANG plane.

Yes, i think recruiting stations need protection.
