Breaking: Soldier murdered in Arkansas; Update: Shooter a Muslim convert, opponent of military; Update: “Studied” in Yemen?

A gunman with an assault rifle targeted a military recruitment office today in Little Rock, Arkansas, killing one of the recruiters and wounded another.  Police arrested a suspect, but details are still sketchy:

One Army recruiter was killed Monday and a second was wounded in a shooting at a recruiting office, and a suspect was arrested, police said.

Police Lt. Terry Hastings said the recruiter was shot when a man in a black SUV opened fire on the office in west Little Rock at about 10:30 a.m.

The vehicle was stopped on Interstate 630 a short time later and a suspect was taken into custody. Hastings said the suspect pulled over and surrendered without incident.

Police said they found an assault rifle in the vehicle.

We’ll update the story as developments hit the wires.  The AP reported that police found “packages” in the SUV the suspect used to get away from the murder scene.  A bomb-disposal unit got called to the scene, but no report yet on what they found.

This could have any of several different motives: political, personal, insanity.  I’d caution against reading too much into it until we hear more from the police.  We’ll be keeping an eye on it.

Update: More here from KATV:

Authorities say the incident occurred around 10:00 a.m. at a U.S. Army Navy Career Center inside the Ashley Square Shopping Center at 9112 North Rodney Parham Road. According to Lt. Terry Hastings with the Little Rock Police Department, two enlisted soldiers standing outside the office were hit when the unidentified suspect drove up and began shooting.

Both of the wounded were taken to a nearby hospital, where one of the victims died a short time later, according to police.

Update II: This Ain’t Hell says the victim was a recruit just back from basic training, and not the recruiter.  I’ve adjusted the title accordingly.

Update III: The murder victim has been identified as William Long, and the other victim as Quenton Ezeagwula.  Keep them and their families in your prayers tonight.

Update IV: Police have identified the shooter as Carlos Bledsoe, but that’s not what he’s calling himself these days:

A Muslim convert who said he was opposed to the U.S. military shot two soldiers outside an Arkansas recruiting station, killing one of the soldiers, police said Monday.

“This individual appears to have been upset with the military, the Army in particular, and that’s why he did what he did,” Little Rock Police Lt. Terry Hastings said in a phone interview.

“He has converted to Muslim here in the past few years,” Hastings said. “To be honest we’re not completely clear on what he was upset about. He had never been in the military.”

Hastings identified the man in custody as Carlos Bledsoe, 24, of Little Rock, who was going by the name of Abdul Hakim Mujahid Muhammad. He did not have further details. The names of the soldiers were not released, nor was the condition of the wounded soldier.

Gateway Pundit wonders whether this is “sudden jihadi syndrome”.  Breitbart reports that Bledsoe aka Muhammad will get charged with one count of murder — and 15 counts of terrorism.  I’m sure we will have more as this develops.

Update V: Robert Spencer hears that the shooter studied Islam abroad — in Yemen.  He’s trying to get more details on it now.

Retaliation for killing an abortion doctor, perhaps.

Don’t think so. Doesn’t seem to pan out. It would have made more sense to go after a priest or pastor.

It’s possible it was personal retribution as well.

Dr Evil on June 1, 2009 at 2:22 PM

Just to update. The news is now reporting that the soldiers who were shot were what is known as Hometown Recruiter Assistents. These are guys who are not recruiters, but rather have received permission to spend some time at home helping out the local recruiters. The benefit is they don’t get charged leave time and they get to spend a little time at home with the family and in exchange they go down to the recruiting station and help the recruiters with administrative stuff.

The reports are conflicting on whether they have just completed Basic or if they indeed have been deployed overseas and just gotten back. Either way it is a sad commentary when the streets of our cities are becoming more violent then those in a war zone.

Just A Grunt on June 1, 2009 at 2:22 PM

At first thought, I don’t assume this is retaliation. The perp here looks like your average thug who probably doesn’t have abortion as his prime issue.

BPD on June 1, 2009 at 2:19 PM

Probably not, but that would be sickening if the recruiter was killed for that reason.

FontanaConservative on June 1, 2009 at 2:25 PM

Vashta.Nerada on June 1, 2009 at 2:23 PM

I shouldn’t joke; the man shot was a hometown guy who spoke to recruits about his life in tha military. He survives war, only to be shot by a loser back home.

Vashta.Nerada on June 1, 2009 at 2:26 PM

Alright, if killing the late-term abortionist was an act of “domestic terrorism”, then logically killing a military recruiter must also be. If the killing of a late-term abortionist called for a “national day of commitment” then so must this. If those who do not support late-term abortion were somehow morally implicated in the late-term abortionist’s killing then those who do not support military requiting must be somehow morally implicated in this.

MB4 on June 1, 2009 at 2:26 PM

I will promise you this is not a typical lefty, maybe a PrisonPlanet type freak, but not a lib. Why?

Our crazy kooks have the nuts for face to face violence, the left’s kooks are too cowardly and pussy to face the consequences of real violence and resort to the sackless attacks of spitting, vandalism, character assassination, or a timed bombing that allows them to be far, far away.

Just like everything else, the left are total douchebag cowards.

Vashta.Nerada on June 1, 2009 at 2:28 PM

This is horrible. These guys weren’t ordinary recruiters either. Just regular soldiers helping the recruiters. Probably Iraq and/or Afghanistan vets:

According to Army Lt. Col. Thomas F. Artis, the two victims were not recruiters, but part of a recruiting program called “Hometown Recruiting Assistance.” Artis says recruiters use soldiers to tell their stories and talk to potential recruits while they are visiting or based back in their home region.

No doubt this act was done by an extreme leftist anti-military domestic terrorist.

He was driven by the actions of Code Pink, and incited to violence by the nonsense ramblings of Keith Olberman, Bill Maher, and most of the MSNBC on-air personalities.

Sound familiar?

Obama just released this

I am shocked and outraged by the murder of one of our recruiters Dr. George Tiller as he attended church services this morning. However profound our differences as Americans over difficult issues such as foreign policy abortion, they cannot be resolved by heinous acts of violence.

Unless the killer thought that the military recruiter was actually a late-term abortionist in disguise or a Klingon, I would pretty much rule out insanity, especially as he tried to get away in a sane normal fashion rather than clicking his teeth and thinking that he was invisible.

I think portlandon has a point.Despite the rosy glowing reports of Obamas’ adoring public, I see a lot of fear and anger out there. I have a dear friend who had a nervous breakdown last month. Dissent is the highest form of patriotism. And this is, really, another form of dissent protected by the First Amendment; there is no ‘crime’. Some might call it extreme, but it’s what is needed to combat the legacy of Reagan/Bush/Limbaugh/Cheney. Berkeley agrees with this to be sure, so any charges to come will be considered political and they will fight this tooth and nail. Surely Sotomayer will concur, especially after we get the UN involved.

MB4 on June 1, 2009 at 2:59 PM

Do not let Grow Fins dictate the discussion. He is trolling for someone to make a stupid comment so that he can pretend he is vindicated within his own mind.

It doesn’t matter if this POS is neon purple or orange but we won’t know the why until at least a few more details emerge. Appearances (as well as speculation) mean nothing.

Why is it that CNN, MSNBC, and ABC websites have yet to cover this story? Just wondering.

It’s their legal policy.

Everyone is innocent until proven conservative.

Insanity . . . absolute insanity, and this is only the beginniing.

I almost posted a similar comment, but as Ed says, let’s not read too much into this before we have more information.

So where was this caution yesterday in response to the Tiller murder? We don’t know what set today’s guy off–and we don’t yet know what Tiller’s shooter’s motives were (at least not that I’ve seen reported yet).

It took no time at all for the lefties to descend on us here to talk about painting us with the same brush, to accuse us of supporting murder, yadda, yadda, yadda. They’re despicable and I’m not going to play their pathetic little game with this incident.

Barack Obama, who is not an average thug.

MB4 on June 1, 2009 at 2:59 PM

Above average for a thug…below average for a president.

National news is still completely quiet about it…nothing on the wire services either. I guess this fits the MSM narrative…abortion doctor murdered = national outrage…soldiers murdered in their home town = meh.

The word “Gay” used to mean something else too people.

Lets not get all caught up in semantics and realize this for what it is. A senseless tragedy perpetrated by a scumbag (anyone who would kill an innocent human being can be deemed a scumbag in my book).
