Blaming Obama for the night on Broadway?

posted at 11:00 am on May 31, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Date Night at the Morrissey residence tends towards the modest.  When the First Mate and I go out on the town, we usually have a quiet dinner and a movie in the local suburbs.  Occasionally, we’ll go into the city to see a show and try a more expensive restaurant as a treat, but when we do, we usually just drive ourselves and don’t take three Gulfstream jets to go there.  Our nation’s First Couple have a different style:

President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama landed in New York Saturday afternoon, and after taking a helicopter from JFK into Manhattan, drove up the West Side Highway, where the northbound lanes were shut down by police for their visit, past Ground Zero, into the Village for dinner at the Village’s Blue Hill restaurant. From there, they went north to Times Square, where they went to to see a production of “Joe Turner’s Come and Gone” at the Belasco Theater on West 44 Street.

Deputy Press Secretary Josh Earnest read a statement from Obama: “I am taking my wife to New York City because I promised her during the campaign that I would take her to a Broadway show after it was all finished.”

Asked about the cost of the trip, which Republicans have criticized as indulgent, coming just ahead of the expected announcement of GM’s bankruptcy filing on Monday, Josh Earnest told pool reporter Dave Michaels of the Dallas Morning News, that he “didn’t anticipate being able to provide a cost estimate tonight.” …

The president traveled in a smaller, Gulfstream-type plane rather than the larger planes typically used as Air Force One. Two other planes carried staff and reporters.

Sounds like a great night out on the town, Mr. President.  Glad we could pick up the tab for it. I guess the FM and I will have to skip a few Date Nights for ourselves to pay for all of that.

Presidents do go on vacation, of course, to get away from the pressures of the Beltway.  They go out for nights on the town, too.  Jazz Shaw, calling this Date Night a “dim move,” reminds us that Bush liked to move DC west every August:

If you didn’t complain – and do so loudly and often – about President Bush shattering all previous records for presidential vacation time in the midst of two wars that he began and various other crises, you should know how you look if you complain now. All those trips to Crawford and other destinations were on the public dime, involving Air Force One, staffers, supporting crew, etc. And they cost a fortune. If you take to the streets in manufactured outrage over this evening out, you are hypocrites, and there’s really no other way to put it.

Now, for the rest of our friends, if you were critical of President Bush for his vacationing ways, will you really just shrug your shoulders and say this is “no big deal” since it’s Obama going out on the town? The trip still involved three Gulfstream Jets, a large staff and press corps following, blocking off traffic for hours across several blocks in Manhattan on a Saturday afternoon and evening and a total taxpayer bill which the White House couldn’t even estimate for us. And it took place not only in the midst of two hot wars, but on the eve of GM likely going bankrupt and a rising unemployment rate where millions of Americans are wondering if they’ll be able to afford all their groceries next month. Could the optics of this Broadway fiasco possibly be any worse?

Why use Gulfstream planes at all?  Why not just use Air Force One, which would likely have kept at least one of the other planes on the ground, instead?  Perhaps the White House wanted to emphasize the non-official nature of the visit; I suspect they didn’t want AF1 to return to New York City’s skies so soon after the Scare Force One fiasco.  However, AF1 is built to keep the President in close touch with the government in times of crisis.  It exists for precisely that reason, and is meticulously maintained to ensure the safest possible flight.

But the real foolishness was the Gulfstream and helicopters for the media.  Are we to believe that the national news media has no reporters in New York City?  The BIg Apple isn’t exactly the Badlands of the Dakotas, or the remote peaks of the Rockies, in terms of media saturation.  It looks like Obama wanted to make this a media event and didn’t mind using three planeloads of taxpayer money to stage it.

And can anyone calculate the carbon footprint of three Gulfstream jets, three helicopters, and all the stalled traffic in New York City?  I’d say that it reaches Goracle-like levels.

As Gail Gitcho of the RNC asked, why not take Michelle out for a night at the Kennedy Center instead, where the President has a reserved seat and only needs to travel across DC?  I know he promised her a Broadway play, but I’m pretty sure he’d still have her vote in 2012.

I’m betting BO opted for the Gulf Stream over AF1, since he screwed up so royally, last month with that little fly over NYC and scared the shit out of the people.

I think we’ll all agree that the President of the United States (not this one in particular, but generally speaking, whomever the occupant of the office is) is woefully underpaid for the amount of work he does and the associated stresses and dangers that come with the task.

WTF? This is a defense? NOBODY runs for President because of the salary. If they do they are fools. Everyone that runs for President knows full well going in what they are signing up for. If Barry thought it was simply going to be him being able to continue to campaign without opposition then he is more of a dunce that anyone could ever imagine. If he thinks the job is harder than he anticipated, then he deserves every stress and pressue he is getting.

My goodness, O’Reilly, Mr. Used To Be Anchor of Inside Edition, really made an impact on our little community here. Alright, at first pass, maybe wanting a very bad man who killed hundreds of humans in the womb to burn in hell is a bit harsh.
But, really, allowing strangelet, HA’s resident idiot, to dictate that we are somehow wrong for believing that murdering innocent beings does not give you a one way ticket to hell, is sickening.
Am I happy that he was murdered? No. Am I happy that he is no longer on this Earth to continue his bloody work? Yes.

I mean, normally, our political ‘checks and balances’ would not only expose the graft, corruption, unconstitutional power grab, national security exposures, and outright incompetence of the current administration……….

I am afraid that this will be a lesson that many Americans are not going to be able to walk away from……….

Terrye on May 31, 2009 at 3:54 PM

I would like to comment on the incredible waste Obama exhibited in this time of recession.

A C-130 transport was needed to get the limos and a back up vehicle to NYC.

Even though Obama finally flew into NYC on a smaller plane (instead of the 747 AF1) an identical decoy plane was flown nearby.

Lets not forget the extra NYPD security needed to shut off traffic around Times Square and also to block intersections from JFK Airport to Times Square and the restaurant.

WE all have to make sacrifices in these times but as long as Obama had a good time is all that is important.

Not having read any other posts yet (and at the risk of repeating what others have said), I find this abuse of the taxpayers’ dime just another nose-thumbing by the Obamas for several reasons.

President Obama is likely to find himself in New York City on national business many times during his tenure. Certainly he could wrap around a “date night” of dinner and the theater during the same trip.

When President Bush spent his Augusts in Crawford, he was certainly on a working vacation with access to all of the resources necessary to keep him apprised of national and international events. On the other hand, the Obamas appear to literally take themselves away from responsibilities with these showy and expensive getaways.

Your point about a press plane is also well-taken, Ed. When the president is traveling to major metropolitan areas, especially those saturated with media types, it hardly seems necessary to have his own media entourage. Is the WH press corps the only one entrusted with the approved media message?

The self-absorbed Obamas insult every hard-working taxpayer with their attitude ofentitlement. It’s obvious that much has been handed to them in life from scholarships onward.

DarkCurrent on May 31, 2009 at 4:32 PM

Hey Ed…this is not the first attempt on Tiller’s life.
Interesting.
I think this will hurt the pro-life cause badly.

Just as Situationist Gianfranco Sanguinetti warned the international left, in his 1979 essay, that acts of terrorism always reinforce the powers of the State (his thesis was that State power and terrorism are mutually symbiotic and dependent on each other), the North American religious right is going to suffer great losses as a result of this morning’s terrorist act in Wichita. That, this time, the assassination attempt succeeded, and that it happened in the sanctuary of a church of a mainstream Protestant faith, will provoke a double whammy of shock and revulsion, including among tens of millions of Americans that do not like abortion, but likewise believe that assassination is obviously just as (or more) anti-life.
The original assassination attempt on Dr. Tiller came eight months into the Clinton presidency. The parallel with today’s offense ought to be obvious: a pro-choice president takes office and the violent extremists go all crazy, whipped up by some of the same right wing radio talkers today as sixteen years ago.
The predictable knee-jerk response from some in the pro-choice majority will be to attempt to demonize and link all Americans that define themselves as “pro life” as aiding and abetting this act of terrorism by having a mere opinion, just as George W. Bush and others attempted to link all oppositional dissent to the attacks of September 11, 2001. And while it is an absolute certainty that the Obama Justice Department will investigate and prosecute this latest crime – and criminal – to the maximum extent of the law, those that want to, like Bush, demonize dissent itself are not going to get much rhetorical backing from the President.

I hate the trashy novel phrase ‘nouveau riche behavior’ but I can’t keep the idea that it applies in the Obama’s case out of my head.

I know you aren’t but I doubt anyone hear would try to explain this death let alone why the shooter didn’t go after a different target. Poor BOR he’s had a really really bad weekend.

Cindy Munford on May 31, 2009 at 4:28 PM

We all have to watch on Monday to see how BOR will discuss this.

Dr. Tiller was basically found innocent, which I didn’t know because Mr. O’Reilly – after causing a commotion like only he can – never followed up on the outcome.

I wonder….would the Highlander enjoy this?

“…those who today, either out of despair or because they are victims of the propaganda the regime propagates in favour of terrorism as the nec plus ultra of subversion, contemplate artificial terrorism with uncritical admiration, even attempting sometimes to practise it, do not know that they are only competing with the State on its own terrain, and do not know that, on its own terrain, not only is the State the strongest but that it will always have the last word.”

Obama had to fly all the way to NY to find a play that would make Michelle proud of America:

August Wilson’s JOE TURNER’S COME AND GONE is set in a Pittsburgh boarding house in 1911. Owners Seth and Bertha Holly play host to a makeshift family of people who come to stay, some for days, some longer, during the Great Migration of the 1910s when descendants of former slaves moved in large numbers from the South toward the industrial cities of the North, seeking new jobs, new lives and new beginnings.

Among those on the move are Herald Loomis and his young daughter, Zonia. Haunted by the past, they are headed wherever the road takes them in search of the long gone Martha, Herald’s wife and Zonia’s mother. Herald arrives at the boarding house unsettled, dark and secretive. Seth Holly is suspicious and wants him out almost as soon as he arrives, but Bertha and the others see him differently, and by action and example, they help set him on the way to recovering his lost spirit and finding a new life.

The story is richly detailed, joyous, sad, and always hopeful. Mr. Wilson’s words from the play’s introduction best set the scene:

“It is August in Pittsburgh, 1911…. From the deep and the near South the sons and daughters of newly freed African slaves wander into the city. Isolated, cut off from memory…. They arrive carrying Bibles and guitars, their pockets lined with dust and fresh hope, marked men and women seeking to scrape from the narrow, crooked cobbles and the fiery blasts of the coke furnace a way of bludgeoning and shaping the malleable parts of themselves into a new identity as free men of definite and sincere worth.”

I heard on Fox that Obama offered to chip in the cost of two first class air tickets and to pay for their hotel. So that’s what, a couple thou we can subtract from the $50 to $100,000 jaunt?

Dee2008 on May 31, 2009 at 4:37 PM

I don’t begrudge the President taking a trip to NYC, either, but what galls me about it are the optics. This is a man whose entire rise to power has been built on crafting the image (with words and visuals) of an everyman with some sort of amazingly special quality to touch the average American with his inspirational bullshit… and here he is with a convoy of planes strutting all over Manhattan like the arrogant prick he is. Surely he knows how this looks — he doesn’t care if it pisses anyone off, in fact, he wants it to.

I just realized I used hear instead of here. Although I think his heart is in the right place BOR is pretty much a horse’s patoot but I am feeling so badly for him right now. I don’t understand the partial birth abortion option at all but I sure don’t understand this cold blooded action. I hope when found he doesn’t portray himself as a righteous Christian since he obviously didn’t trust God to handle this.

Cindy Munford on May 31, 2009 at 4:40 PM

Speaking of that, wasn’t MO going to make the military families her official FLOTUS project? I read last week that she’s now making the arts her project. Maybe the military families aren’t glamorous enough for her???

Dee2008 on May 31, 2009 at 4:09 PM

Glamour has nothing to do with it. The military families aren’t needed anymore. At least until the next election. Until then, the Obama’s have to keep fanning the swooning of their fans, to keep the money flowing in.

Cindy, like you I could never condone cold blooded murder, but if this guy really did kill Tiller because of the abortions, he probably had convinced himself that he was saving millions of innocent children. I feel sorry for him and his family–and Tiller’s family as well. It’s a very sad event, but as far as I’m concerned it reflects not at all on the pro-life movement.

Terrye on May 31, 2009 at 4:42 PM

Nope, but I think that a lot of you tacitly support Tillers assassin and domestic terrorism against abortion clinics and think it is justified.
And more importantly, because of one domestic terrorist, I think you just a got a 10year setback in your goals.
The J-womb will be in ten years and we will have functional ectogenesis.
Any aborted fetuses can be simply be transferred to a Bene Tleilax J-womb and nutured to full gestation.
I suggest Christians and Christian Churches can provide the monies for these ectogenetic host wombs and adopt the resultant babies.
A far better use for their fundage than lobbying Californian citizens to suppress minority citizen rights.
