Blaming Obama for the night on Broadway?
posted at 11:00 am on May 31, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Date Night at the Morrissey residence tends towards the modest. When the First Mate and I go out on the town, we usually have a quiet dinner and a movie in the local suburbs. Occasionally, we’ll go into the city to see a show and try a more expensive restaurant as a treat, but when we do, we usually just drive ourselves and don’t take three Gulfstream jets to go there. Our nation’s First Couple have a different style:
President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama landed in New York Saturday afternoon, and after taking a helicopter from JFK into Manhattan, drove up the West Side Highway, where the northbound lanes were shut down by police for their visit, past Ground Zero, into the Village for dinner at the Village’s Blue Hill restaurant. From there, they went north to Times Square, where they went to to see a production of “Joe Turner’s Come and Gone” at the Belasco Theater on West 44 Street.
Deputy Press Secretary Josh Earnest read a statement from Obama: “I am taking my wife to New York City because I promised her during the campaign that I would take her to a Broadway show after it was all finished.”
Asked about the cost of the trip, which Republicans have criticized as indulgent, coming just ahead of the expected announcement of GM’s bankruptcy filing on Monday, Josh Earnest told pool reporter Dave Michaels of the Dallas Morning News, that he “didn’t anticipate being able to provide a cost estimate tonight.” …
The president traveled in a smaller, Gulfstream-type plane rather than the larger planes typically used as Air Force One. Two other planes carried staff and reporters.
Sounds like a great night out on the town, Mr. President. Glad we could pick up the tab for it. I guess the FM and I will have to skip a few Date Nights for ourselves to pay for all of that.
Presidents do go on vacation, of course, to get away from the pressures of the Beltway. They go out for nights on the town, too. Jazz Shaw, calling this Date Night a “dim move,” reminds us that Bush liked to move DC west every August:
If you didn’t complain – and do so loudly and often – about President Bush shattering all previous records for presidential vacation time in the midst of two wars that he began and various other crises, you should know how you look if you complain now. All those trips to Crawford and other destinations were on the public dime, involving Air Force One, staffers, supporting crew, etc. And they cost a fortune. If you take to the streets in manufactured outrage over this evening out, you are hypocrites, and there’s really no other way to put it.
Now, for the rest of our friends, if you were critical of President Bush for his vacationing ways, will you really just shrug your shoulders and say this is “no big deal” since it’s Obama going out on the town? The trip still involved three Gulfstream Jets, a large staff and press corps following, blocking off traffic for hours across several blocks in Manhattan on a Saturday afternoon and evening and a total taxpayer bill which the White House couldn’t even estimate for us. And it took place not only in the midst of two hot wars, but on the eve of GM likely going bankrupt and a rising unemployment rate where millions of Americans are wondering if they’ll be able to afford all their groceries next month. Could the optics of this Broadway fiasco possibly be any worse?
Why use Gulfstream planes at all? Why not just use Air Force One, which would likely have kept at least one of the other planes on the ground, instead? Perhaps the White House wanted to emphasize the non-official nature of the visit; I suspect they didn’t want AF1 to return to New York City’s skies so soon after the Scare Force One fiasco. However, AF1 is built to keep the President in close touch with the government in times of crisis. It exists for precisely that reason, and is meticulously maintained to ensure the safest possible flight.
But the real foolishness was the Gulfstream and helicopters for the media. Are we to believe that the national news media has no reporters in New York City? The BIg Apple isn’t exactly the Badlands of the Dakotas, or the remote peaks of the Rockies, in terms of media saturation. It looks like Obama wanted to make this a media event and didn’t mind using three planeloads of taxpayer money to stage it.
And can anyone calculate the carbon footprint of three Gulfstream jets, three helicopters, and all the stalled traffic in New York City? I’d say that it reaches Goracle-like levels.
As Gail Gitcho of the RNC asked, why not take Michelle out for a night at the Kennedy Center instead, where the President has a reserved seat and only needs to travel across DC? I know he promised her a Broadway play, but I’m pretty sure he’d still have her vote in 2012.

Actually, team Obama (press included) are the ones who like to compare this ass to Lincoln. Hell, even Hillary made direct reference to former assassinations in an attempt to diffuse some of Oberidiot’s momentum during the primary. The right rarely stoops to those levels of daydreaming (at least, out loud that is).

Well, reasonable people know this isn’t about the abortion debate. So relax.
There are truly nutcases on both sides. Anyone who commits murder is, by definition, sick.
So do know that some of us who are pro-choice aren’t going to view this as iconic.
But, I would say that supporting the bombing of clinics has led to this.
That definitely needs to be refuted by pro-lifers.
AnninCA on May 31, 2009 at 1:37 PM
Absolutely. Not even in jest.
In fact, for my part, I hope to God that President Obama has DOUBLE the number of body guards that have been assigned in the past. I want this guy to leave office having gained 20 points, healthy as a horse. I want him to build his damn library and fade into history.
I want history to judge him, not some anarchist animal with his own messiah complex. Dear God, for the sake of the nation keep this man safe.

jediwebdude on May 31, 2009 at 1:42 PM
I believe you need to do some research. I know that you usually paint yourself as the ‘voice of reason’ and the wishy washy expert on everything here, but it never really mattered if the mother was in ‘danger’ or not with Tiller the Baby Killer. He would do it for the five thousand dollars, he would do it if the mother had a headache. He was under investigation. Do some research.
HornetSting on May 31, 2009 at 1:44 PM
AnninCA on May 31, 2009 at 1:38 PM
I’m not defending the one who killed Tiller. That was wrong and stupid because the Left will make that monster into a martyr.
However, you haven’t defended your position on partial birth abortion by changing the subject.
Why is it less than murder to stab a baby in the skull as it passes through the birth canal?
Disturb the Universe on May 31, 2009 at 1:44 PM
No, you suck.
Almost all the late term abortions are for psych reasons — not that the mother is going to die. Such crap.
Blake on May 31, 2009 at 1:45 PM
Actually, I changed my mind about this, and so am I today.
I was a firm non-believer in the death penalty for over 40 years.
And then, I realized one day, that’s really not the issue.
So today, I’m not opposed. I am opposed to not providing anyone on death row complete and total access to DNA testing, etc.
The idea that they are killed because they can’t pay for DNA testing is outrageous.
We now know that many are innocent.
So, provided the state pays to validate the prosecutions, I have no problem with the death penalty.
AnninCA on May 31, 2009 at 1:46 PM
What concerns me about this story is not the fact that Obama misuses government resources for his little excursion there, but how the worshipers will react. Oh how he looks with an open collar, look at Michelle’s dress. They’re like the Kennedys blah blah blah. It’s sickening. On a bright note, however, my firefox spellchecker wants to correct the word “Obama”. So all is not lost. Yet.

Blake on May 31, 2009 at 1:46 PM
One of the interesting things to note is the Left’s reaction to Obama so far.
Yes, they still blame Bush for everything. Apparently he made Carter pass the CRA, FM hire Barney Frank’s boyfriend, etc.
But now I am also starting to hear “Obama isn’t perfect”. Yes it is couched in Bush bashing…but it is a notable change. They still mouth the messiah worship, but perhaps Obama’s incompetence is starting to penetrate their thick skulls.
18-1 on May 31, 2009 at 1:46 PM
Very true. I guess I am still optimistic that it doesn’t change the fact that abortion is murder and that those who are prolife will switch their mind because an extremist murdered Dr. Tiller. It doesn’t help at all, but I guess I’m still optimistic that it shouldn’t change individual’s minds about the issue. I know, I’m living in a fairy tale.

Knucklehead on May 31, 2009 at 1:47 PM
I guess the difference is that when Bush went on vacation he went to “HIS” ranch to get away from it all. Yes of course it cost money to ship the President and crew all over the place, I don’t have an issue with that at all. The price you pay for security and all. However, Obama so likes to look at himself in the slobbering MSM and his wife likes to look at the meat hooks she calls arms on TV as well, that people all over New York are inconvenienced so the fawning crowds can adore the Messiah and it can be played over and over on NBC, ugh. If I was at that theater and wasn’t expecting the ONE to be there and had to be cleared to enter, I’d be pissed off. I guess the Kennedy Center wasn’t good enough for our self-proclamed royalty. Aren’t there any nice places to visit in Washington, D.C. where this stuff happens on a daily basis?
jaimo on May 31, 2009 at 1:47 PM
I agree. This will get more media traction and for longer than the everyday mass-insanity murder for principles going on in the Middle East. We’ll probably still be hearing about this in a week, which by today’s media attention span, is quite extraordinary. Olbermann will have a clip of this on his show (if it’s still around) from about June until the elections next year.

Yes, I’ve watched adults die. What’s that got to do with abortion?
Can you support your comment that late term abortion is usually to save a mother’s life? My recollection is that the legitimate medical community has rejected this argument, which makes sense to me as late term babies can survive outside the womb (therefore the need for brain puncturing.)
Dee2008 on May 31, 2009 at 1:49 PM
President Obama: We can no longer afford to spend as if deficits do not matter…. We can no longer afford to leave the hard choices for the next budget, the next administration or the next generation.
The hypocrisy of this president is quite galling.
He could have economized by taking Michelle out on Broadway when he had other official business in New York City. But Obama comes first, and our budget deficit comes second.
He could have demonstrated real leadership by making a sacrifice, while the unemployment rate is nearly 10% and millions of Americans are making painful sacrifices. But not Obama.
He is our own little emperor. Self indulgent, narcissistic, demanding, and wasteful. And the MSM are little more than his courtiers.

As usual, you’re full of crap. No, we don’t know that many are innocent. The stupid exonerated list is anything but innocent people. There were convictions when DNA was still fairly new. In the late 90s, there were all sorts of projects paying for dna testing. In fact they were actively looking for cases. Unfortunately, most people requesting it then as now are guilty as sin and just want to jerk people around. Roger Coleman — overwhelming evidence of guilt, prior history, and a dna test. But that was still not good enough for you freaks. Retesting only proved what everyone new who had a brain was that he was guilty. Greg Wright — retested. Results still guilty.

I don’t personally feel uncomfortable with abortion in the first trimester. I leave the reasons and the consequences to the woman.

With all due respect most people are not going to argue with terminating a pregnancy if the mother is actually going to die. After all, the baby will not survive without her. But the truth is there are all sorts of birth control measures available today and while that might not have helped a 13 year old impregnated by her uncle, it certainly would have helped most people who get abortions if they bothered to try and avoid getting pregnant.

IMO he should not be having a party at our expense, or expensive dates in Chicago and NY. Its unseemly and disgraceful in the current circumstance.
It illustrates a marked almost wanton indifference to the gravity of the situation.
I wouldn’t laugh or party at the expense of the public while they’re losing jobs, homes and going hungry. Especially in the face of the total failure of the porkulus spending bill.

I did not see many people here supporting it. You are unhinged.

Who here said they support murder?
Blake on May 31, 2009 at 2:14 PM
You sort of talked me off of the ceiling, actually.
You know, I think that part of the discussion is way creepy, but I don’t mean in a shameful way.
It’s just awful, usually.
Pick one or the other.
It’s just awful.
I guess I think we should back out of personal medical decisions. Let the family make these hard choices. It’s awful enough. Why turn it into a political issue?
Note that we still make them decide.

Great, it only took us two pages in a one thread to convince you that late-stage abortion os murder.
Spread the word, sister!

Ok gang.
The discussion of this murder has clearly unhinged me. I am freaked out, in a sense.
But here’s what is really creepy to me.
It’s not unexpected.
These anti-abortionists creeps have been radical and murderous for awhile.
They are NUTS!
