O’Reilly loses his taste for internet cops

posted at 6:51 pm on May 30, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

The entire O’Reilly Factor kerfuffle started when Bill assigned himself the role of internet cop and busted us for writing hateful posts — by quoting a commenter, a newfangled development on blogs which apparently confused Bill.  He then offered a half-assed apology for not reporting accurately, but blamed us for not policing our comment sections as thoroughly as Bill himself does with his own site.  Patterico then took Bill at his word and paid good money to join Bill’s site (note that we don’t charge people to read Hot Air) and did a little internet policing of his own.

Did Patterico get a high-five from the Factor for his intrepid work in pointing out hateful comments?  Not exactly:

I wish I could share today’s “BillOReilly.com blog posting” . . . but my membership has been terminated …

Oh, wait. I just reviewed the Terms and Conditions again, and I believe I have found the relevant language: “4. Do not expose Bill O’Reilly as a rank hypocrite.”

Glenn Reynolds calls this “inexcusable internet lameness,” which is accurate as far as it goes, but it’s also rather pusillanimousOur posts and comments sections are open for anyone to read, and for anyone to criticize, including Bill.  Bill, however, not only requires people to pay first to read them, but then when a paying member does exactly what Bill does on his television show, Bill has their membership terminated.

Some people can dish out the criticism but can’t take it.

We interviewed Patterico on the NARN show at the very end, when we saw his Twitter update on the situation.  It’s a great segment; be sure to catch it.

Everyone with a Bill O’Reilly membership should continue what Patterico started. Hell, I may join up myself just for that purpose.

The real issue for Bill, is his assumption that people reading blog posts and comments are incapable of understanding the differences in those 2 sections.

I can firmly say to him that ‘WE DO!’.

Bill O’ is turning into a Keith O’.

Two like buffoons on opposite sides of the river. They should hook up and have their own Point-Counter Point show. Then we could enjoy all the meltdown buffoonery in half the time.

SilverStar830 on May 30, 2009 at 7:06 PM

As I noted in the headlines I think Mr. O’Reilly felt he needed to be fair and used HotAir as an example because he is friendly with the owners. So to speak. He fancies himself a first class journalist and likes to cast aspersions on alternative media obviously without realizing he is part of that club himself. His lack of internet savvy makes him appear like a lame fuddy duddy. Now he has over reacted and it’s not going to help. I getting to the point where I think most of this is overblown.

Bill O’Reilly is a nasty nasty man and I have known that for years. He is a blood sucker. Glenn Beck’s ratings are through the roof, so what does Bill O do? Latches onto the ACORN investigation and go on Glenn’s show. I can’t stand the man and his putting his hands up. Fox can get rid of him and Geraldo and I would be very very happy. BTW I haven’t watched Fox and Friends for 4 months now. I feel so much better. I turn the Fox Channel on at 3:00 CDT for Cavuto and turn it off again at 7:00 when numb nuts comes on.

over the course of the campaign and BO’s election, Bill has been tanking left in order to declare himself “fair and balanced” but he has just proved himself to be a hack, compounded his ego re: the hundred months cable number 1 for 100 months. I can’t bear to watch him anymore, it is all about Bill, all the time. Lauara, Dennis, Megyn, Lis, Amanda, assorted guests, why do they bother, it is all about Bill, all the time and no one else gets to say 3 words. Can’t watch

Ed – you guys need to watch out for Jesse Walters – he’s a yet – lurking. Or that other creep he uses.

And if it does happen – and in this case – since Bill acted so inappropriately – extreme measures are in order.

Please follow the extreme of all measures – who shall remain nameless – follow the extreme of all measures’ advice on this one – mention Mackris, falafehs and the loofah of the month club always & often – so the film is unusable.

I like the guy but he can be sort of a wind bag sometimes.
It was cheesy for him to pick on Hot Air like that though. I thought that he and Michelle were friends.
Way to go Bill.

Where’s the loyalty…?

NeoKong on May 30, 2009 at 7:27 PM

Let’s see. Professing expertise on something you actually know nothing about? check. Seeking to stifle people’s opinions? check. Pretending to take both sides while actually siding against individual liberties? check.

O’Reilly has definitely become a liberal.

hawksruleva on May 30, 2009 at 7:27 PM

The problem with O’Reilly is that he wants so desperately to be seen as above partisanship that he feels obligated to attack “right-wing loonies” as some sort of balance to his attacks on the “left-wing loonies”. So periodically he’ll go after a HotAir or a Rush Limbaugh with an attack that is perfunctory, ill-advised, and often ad hominem.

DarkKnight3565 on May 30, 2009 at 7:28 PM

. Hell, I may join up myself just for that purpose.

Kensington on May 30, 2009 at 7:01 PM

Wouldn’t you have to give BOR money in order to do that? I’m sure he won’t minde TOO much.

hawksruleva on May 30, 2009 at 7:28 PM

I am a big fan of the O’reilly factor (except for that idiotic Body Language segment) but I have become quite attached to the Hot Air community as well and O’reilly unfairly smeared Hot Air. I honestly think doesn’t know how blogs really work. Hot Air has one of the most reasonable and intelligent communities out there and singling out one comment, which wasn’t even a big deal to begin with, proves that O’reilly sent some staffer to go on a mission to cherry pick negative comments from some “lowly blog” which he could then take a holier than thou stance with on his show.

I have no problem with criticizing a blog when the whole community is hateful (like KOS and certain conervative sites) but one comment? The remark from the other site about Sotomayer dying early from diabetes was much worse yet he dwelled on the Hussein reference? Please.

Defend yourselves Ed, let the big boys know blogs can stand up for themselves when needed. Hot Air is a great site with a great community. O’Reilly may not apologize but the important thing is that he does more homework next time on who he criticizes. Otherwise he does good work.

Daemonocracy on May 30, 2009 at 7:28 PM

If they replaced him with Dennis Miller the ratings would be even better. But they’re not replacing their top draw for the sake of a blog incident.

I actually agree with BOR’s larger point, that people on both sides need to stop spewing venom. It’s unproductive. But the whole way he’s went about this issue is just wrong. I wonder who REALLY tossed Patterico; my guess is that some staffer makes those decisions.

hawksruleva on May 30, 2009 at 7:32 PM

Typical tactic of leftist sites carried out by a typical leftist.

Something else was expected?

Jim708 on May 30, 2009 at 7:35 PM

I hope you all realize that if Fox gets rid of O’Reilly, they will most likely give the time-slot to Geraldo Rivera.

My collie says:

And why shouldn’t they? After all, soon to be SCOTUS Justice Sotomeyer has assured me that a little narcissistic Puerto-Rican beta male that cheats on all his wives can almost CERTAINLY do a better job of hosting a news program than an bloviating gas-bag of an Irish white man.

Well it would certainly make us even, collie. I’d be spitting on my television screen so often, I’d end up slobbering dang near as much as you do.

CyberCipher on May 30, 2009 at 7:35 PM

Instead of name calling and insults, just don’t watch his show if you don’t like him. I like Savage and I listen, I do not like Laura and I don’t listen, the formula is simple. If you don’t like him or his views don’t watch, some of the things people are saying on the comments are just proving the point he was trying to make. O’Reilly was trying to point out that people on this site, like KOS, Huffington, Free Republic post some vile things…how did people respond??? By posting some vile things. I do not like Madow or Keith and therefore I don’t watch. It really is simple.

arizonateacher on May 30, 2009 at 7:36 PM

Bill O’Reilly is a nasty nasty man and I have known that for years. He is a blood sucker. Glenn Beck’s ratings are through the roof, so what does Bill O do? Latches onto the ACORN investigation and go on Glenn’s show.

That’s because he feels it’s his story and he feels he is entitled.

He sees himself as the person with the highest ratings in Cable and therefore, he is: 1) the expert, 2) he is the one who is most trusted by the people AKA “folks”, 3) the one with the ability to analyze the story, situation, follow-up flawlessly without a hitch.

He also sees himself as the guy who is the former teacher, the guy that has 2 expensive Masters – which he paid for out-of-pocket himself – and the guy with the hard knocks experience.

With that in mind – or in Bill’s mind – no blogger and no one with half the experience/no experience and no-where near the education – like say Glenn Beck – is going to surpass him.

He sees all of it as a personal entitlement that he has earned fairly and squarely.

AprilOrit on May 30, 2009 at 7:36 PM

Isn’t this getting out of hand, O’Reilly’s a goof but hardly the enemy.

Not to defend him too strongly, but he has done a good job of showing the rank conflict of interest in GE/NBC going Green and being in the tank for Obama.

He gets pretty hot about that and shows that he knows who the MSM really is. Same with the Philly NBP party ruling.

Terms and Conditions:

Section 1. Intellectual Property…

- The Site Materials may not be copied and posted on any other web site.

I don’t know if that was on there before or if it was recently added — the T&C does specifically state they can change the terms at any time effective immediately!

However, it is a completely crappy (sh…y) thing to do — thus eliminating any possible criticism.

He should get someone with a membership to give them to him if he thinks he can fight any copyright issues.

My respect level for the self proclaimed internet cop just dropped to all time low levels — not that they weren’t at the level of all self aggrandizing fools go begin with.

What’s interesting is how Doucy immediately answered Michelle by saying he didn’t know anything about the “O’Reilly controversy” when Michelle mentioned it.

petunia on May 30, 2009 at 7:49 PM

The grown up thing for Bill O to do here is to have a statement apologizing to the Hot Air community and Patterico for his mistake and admit that he was out of line.

But we are talking about Bill here. There is nothing grown up about this guy. He is vindictive and gets more so after being proven wrong. Watch for more comments from Hot Air getting aired and his righteous outrage about the nastiness of the site.

My husband and I used to record and watch The Factor every night, but more and more it turned into something like a tabloid. Honestly, one would think only good-looking young women are experts on anything. The insulting part is that half the time (or more), it is obvious they are far from the best spokespersons for whatever is being discussed. He just likes having hot young babes on his show. Even my husband, who certainly has nothing against hot young babes, finds it absurd.

But that is nothing to the constant parade of nearly naked or fully naked and blurred out images that cross the screen. It’s sickening. I think he’s a lecherous old coot.

It really is sad that he has fallen so low. He has done a great deal of good, especially in the area of exposing lax Child protection laws/judges. I will always appreciate him for that, but I can’t stand the sleaze factor.

Willie on May 30, 2009 at 7:24 PM

O’Reilly has regular guests on his show because it’s hard for him to attract actual guests to interview. Even Red Eye has more guests on than he does. With that said, I think Dennis Miller is hilarious and love his segment. I also like MKH (although I realize she and Allah had a falling out on Twitter because Allah was mad she went to the White House Correspondents Dinner) so I like to watch the MKH segment on Mondays. Otherwise, I don’t really watch O’Reilly these days.

Anyway, O’Reilly’s ego is very big and I think HotAir needs to approach this gingerly. You basically have to give him a face-saving out. If you rub his nose in it, he’ll just ignore you and move on, and permanently put anyone associated with HotAir on his s— list. Not good, given that he is the highest rated talent on FoxNews. Again, I hope that Allah and Ed and Michelle are working the back-channels through Amanda or someone else at Fox to do an internet cop segment next week that gets into the blog comments issue and fleshes it out better.

…except that this exposes Mr. O’s fascination with himself…he’s consistently the leader in ratings (ask him/he’ll tell you), but seems to behave as if he some sort of underdog…a very defensive fellow….

…this episode serves to show that Mr. O doesn’t really understand the Internet, even at its most basic cultural level, which means that he doesn’t understand an important and daily ever more important facet of the nation, the folks of whom he claims to be “looking out for”…it’s quaint and cute to be all flustered about “newfangled contraptions” (for about six seconds), but to then lead with the usual pomposity striking out at a medium he clearly knows nothing about is staggering…even the ‘net maven on-call doesn’t help.

This isn’t to take anything away from his jousting with GE, exposing pro-pedophile jurists, and exquisite run-in with Mr. Frank, but along with the stuff he does that we like, we must accept that a great deal of what his detractors say about him is true, as well…and this shows it.

Maybe so, and in our current ‘culture’ I don’t doubt it, but Glenn Beck doesn’t seem to need them. He has a lot of interesting, brilliant sounding guests my husband and I always note we’d never see on Bill O’Reilly, but they would blow O’Reilly’s ‘experts’ out of the water.

pannw on May 30, 2009 at 8:10 PM

Bill has never left Inside Edition. If you’re the hasty replacement for a has-been such as David Frost after a few weeks your melon starts to ripen a little. It’s killing him that Inside Edition didn’t tank after he left. It’s killing him that Deborah Norville keeps it sailing. Why wouldn’t someone whose first on-air position reciting high and low temperatures in that “waiting-for-the mines-to-reopen” Scranton feel disrespected by Inside Edition’s failure to fail?

Who else would build such a monument to themselves with such tripe as “A Bold Fresh Piece of Humanity”? Someone who is now uncertain of their rank – I think. (btw – check the discount out at Amazon!) And, in order to buoy their rank they surround themselves with success. First you start with Dennis Miller whose only real crime is competing with William Buckley as a master of vocabulary (not language – vocabulary.) His gig was not received well by NFL fans but he is nonetheless quite humorous in a faded SNL kind of way. Then, have on beloved guest hosts like Michelle and Laura so intelligent viewers dial up TNSZ. Then, realize that an effeminate hack like Beck is taking the late afternoon crowd by the truckload and use him for your own ratings.

The next monument Bill builds for himself will be how he is the Johnny Carson of News personalities. Don’t get me wrong – I watch the show often – but I can’t help being disappointed with his ego almost every night.

I’ll not comment on his intelligence, savvy or language skills. His books, one measure of his eloquence, are written are, strangely, both bombastic and pedestrian. How popular they are at the sales counter doesn’t signify anything…people used to buy rocks as pets.

He has all the charisma…he has all the charisma of a barbershop crank…or, ironically, of a blogosphere truther….

Bill was stupid. He decided to play “Mr. Fair-minded, Both-Sides-of-the-Fence” during a segment on incindiary language about Judge Sotomayor on blogs — decided to hit the right leaning blogs and made a foolish error by citing a comment rather than a post.

He got called on it and made a stupidly crafted, half-assed apology. Moreover, his own site isn’t the country meadow he would make it out to be… and he has been called on that.

And does this surprise anyone? I doubt anyone watches O’Reilly to get the latest buzz on the internet. I don’t much care for the Internet Cop segment, as it’s basically useless. He probably does it precisely because he knows about its growing importance.

Look, when it comes to Rush, O’Reilly, Beck, and Hannity, it’s not hard to find annoying traits. But in the Time of Obama, I simply cannot get worked up about any of these guys dissing a conservative blog. Even ones I like.

Bill O’finger has only one way out of hell………….

……. expose who was behind this, and how it began the change to our country.

Seven Percent Solution on May 30, 2009 at 8:26 PM

I hate to see a food fight between people who are, at least most of the time, opposed to Obama’s socialistic policies. Liberal loooooooove to see this.

O’Reilly’s problem has always been ego and the ratings game-closely associated with ego-but involves take-home pay as well. Lately O’Reilly has been chummy with Geraldo Rivera which has helped spike his ratings with the left of center crowd. Rivera was formerly called ‘Jerry Rivers’ and is half Puerto Rican and half Jewish. When he had his Anglo name he used to brag of his Jewish heritage but now Rivera is more Hispanic than almost all Hispanics (except possibly Sotomayor) and they can do is wrong. There is no bad illegal alien (if they are Hispanic). A prejudiced Supreme Court candidate. No problemo-as long as that candidate is Hispanic and that target of that hatred is some OTHER racial or ethnic group-prefereably white.

The bottom line is that the influential Rivera has subtly shifted O’Reilly to the left or, to put it another way, to curry favor with Rivera (who trashed Hot Air’s Michelle Malkin) O’Reilly has come out swinging against right wing blogs to give the impression of “fair and balanced.”

Still, because of O’Reilly’s huge popularity, he is still one of the only serious roadblocks to the Obama hegemony and I would like to see the food fight stop.

Enought with the spin, suzy. O’Reilly helped get Beck on Fox to begin with. Then, O’Reilly loaned Beck the resources to do the Acorn investigation, which they shared.

I can’t believe what I’m seeing on HA lately. We’re heading to the kind of vitriol seen on Kos and Huffpo, and it isn’t pretty. We’re above that, folks.

O’Reilly surely isn’t the devil, even if he made a major blunder with MM. I like most of what O’Reilly does, and he’s mostly a decent man. Sure, I like and respect MM more, but that doesn’t mean I have to hate BO. Sure, it’s good to point out that BO doesn’t know squat about Blogs, and of course he’s a blowhard, and there’s nothing wrong with pointing that out. But the comments here?

Let’s focus here, folks, and bring the hatred down a notch or two.

Actually he hasn’t been that chummy with Rivera, he’s hardly been on of late.

And Geraldo hasn’t called himself Jerry Rivers since he left Suffolk County Long Island years ago.

URGENT!!!

Has anyone heard abot the latest 2,000 page Texas bill SB300 that ressurects the Trans Texas Corridor. From what I have heard, the Texas legislature is trying to ram this new bill through by Monday.

Pass on the news to all Texans so they can put a stop to it…….

dddave on May 30, 2009 at 8:39 PM

I remember they did the same thing to the Media Matters guy who ran the same sort of patrol a few years back. Pretty freaking funny the attack’s coming from conservatives this time. And he never did hire a better admin/moderation staff to run the discussion section of his site, if he even knows who they are.

Typhonsentra on May 30, 2009 at 8:42 PM

Correction:

Texas HB 300 is the bill.

dddave on May 30, 2009 at 8:43 PM

It is not just the Obama administration…

O’Reilly just bannedPatterico from his web site. Discrimination and hypocrisy I say!

Hey wait, when was the last time I remember someone gettting banned from Patterico? Hmmmm. It will come to me.

Bill is a brilliant man.
Geraldo is a brilliant man.
Obama is a brilliant man.
Olbermann is a brilliant man.
…Just wondered what it felt like to say it…

Thanks for typing all that, as it is exactly what I was thinking; are we going to start eating our own now, as the libs do? O’Reilly can be a pain, but mostly he’s OK. His lack of computer/internet expertise makes him a bit insecure. Cut him a little bit of a break; break his balls, but give up the hate, really.

zeebeach on May 30, 2009 at 8:54 PM

Again, this is beating a dead horse already, but in a way I understand the irritation felt by the admin here at hot air.

I once paid the premium fee to read and comment at O’Reilly’s site, but canceled long, long ago. I only kept it for a month. It wasn’t worth the money, even though it isn’t much.

Why on earth pay for something you can get for free? Aside from that, I find O’Reilly to be stodgy and hypocritical at least 45% of the time. Not something I need to pay for.

Spiritk9 on May 30, 2009 at 8:58 PM

I like O’Reilly. Sure he screws up and sometimes won’t admit it. And he screws up a lot re: the Internet because he hates it and knows nothing about it. I still like him and watch the show.

Daggett on May 30, 2009 at 9:03 PM

He’s annoying, egotistical, an incurable buttinski, and sometimes hypocritical. But he does a lot of good stuff for the right. And apparently a lot of people agree:

O’Reilly should unban Patterico then invite him and Allah on as guests to discuss this. That would show Bill is a man.

Patterico should unban Jeff Goldstein and invite him to come along for the Factor sitdown. That would show Patterico was a man.

This is what happens to you when you care what the Left and media say about you. It leads you to try to prove you are “fair and balanced.” You play the Left’s game by their rules and everybody winds up hating your guts.

Seems like Mr. O could use a dose of humility. Oh wait, he thinks he IS humble. He says so.
