Who pressured Justice to drop case against voter intimidation in Philly?

Michelle blogged about this yesterday, and the Washington Times reports today that the Department of Justice has taken the “unprecedented” step of dropping a case which they had already won by default judgment. Political appointees at Justice pressured career prosecutors into giving up on the case of voter intimidation by the New Black Panthers group in Philadelphia, who attempted to frighten voters away from the polls in the presidential election:
Justice Department political appointees overruled career lawyers and ended a civil complaint accusing three members of the New Black Panther Party for Self-Defense of wielding a nightstick and intimidating voters at a Philadelphia polling place last Election Day, according to documents and interviews.
The incident – which gained national attention when it was captured on videotape and distributed on YouTube – had prompted the government to sue the men, saying they violated the 1965 Voting Rights Act by scaring would-be voters with the weapon, racial slurs and military-style uniforms.
Career lawyers pursued the case for months, including obtaining an affidavit from a prominent 1960s civil rights activist who witnessed the confrontation and described it as “the most blatant form of voter intimidation” that he had seen, even during the voting rights crisis in Mississippi a half-century ago.
The incident was videotaped and widely distributed on YouTube at the time:
Recall, please, that Democrats screamed about the supposed politicization at Justice during Alberto Gonzales’ tenure as Attorney General for replacing political appointees who serve at the pleasure of the President. They claimed that the replacement of nine US Attorneys was a plan by the Bush administration, supposedly through Karl Rove and Harriet Miers, to affect the outcome of investigations and prosecutions. It touched off a Constitutional fight over executive privilege that continues to this day, as the House and Senate Judiciary Committees are still conducting its “investigations” into this supposed politicization.
This looks significantly more like politicization of outcomes that anything alleged during the Bush administration, especially since the DoJ already won the case. In fact, the government had prepared arguments for penalties against the men as late as May 5th, before the political commissars under Attorney General Eric Holder ordered them to withdraw. Holder, during his confirmation hearing, had called career DoJ lawyers his “teachers” and the “backbone” of Justice. Apparently, the political leadership trumps teachers and backbone when it comes to voter intimidation on behalf of Barack Obama.
So will the same Congressional committees open an investigation into this reversal to benefit voter intimidation on behalf of the administration? Will they go after actual politicization as energetically as they did implied politicization? You can ask them yourselves:
House Judiciary Committee: 202-225-3951
Senate Judiciary Committee: 202-224-7703, 202-224-5225

Obviously there was no voter intimidation and therefore all charges were dropped. Justice is blind you know.

Nobody pressured the Justice Departent. Eric Holder is a racist and this is going to be how voting takes place in this country from now on. Illegal/fraud: welcome! Registered: stay away or we’ll break your skull in.

Message from the Justice Department: Voter intimidation is okay, if you pretend to be sorry about it and promise never to do it again.

Holder’s Verdict?: If you were intimidated and frightened away from the polls, you’re probably a racist anyway, so no harm, no foul.

The funny thing about this, being that it is in Philly, is that they probably scared away more Dems than Repubs, unless all four of them had to vote at this place.

I think all Whites should join Stormfront now – or some other equally ludicrous White Supremacy group.
What happened to equal protection? If the government will no longer protect the rights of it’s citizens and protects racist organizations like the Black Panthers – then perhaps the only solution is for us to all join our own “ethnic” superiority groups.
You know – groups that protect OUR interstests – since the government is no longer doing it with an equal hand.
I hope everyone likes THAT America.
I know I won’t – but I can adapt I guess.

I am rapidly losing hope here, guys. There is no justice to be found in this country any more. Look at how Chrysler and GM bond holders are treated. Look at how the contracts at AIG were disregarded. No rule of law….
catlady on May 29, 2009 at 12:38 PM
Now for all of you complaining about the GOP being a patsy, here is just another arrow to use on the left.
Pres Obama nominates judges that espouse racist’s views
Pres Obama allows voter intimidation occur by the Black Panther party
Enough examples like this and that message repeated over and over with out our acting in any way that allows the left to muddy the message by screaming (effectively) “but they do it too” will change all but the most hard core leftist’s mind.

Sounds like the aides have the same attitudes as the people they work for… the House is more reactionary because they’re up every 2 years, while the Senate regularly tells the common man to FOAD because they’re only up every 6 years.
teke184 on May 29, 2009 at 12:45 PM
It’s okay… They only scared away whites, and without the “rich life experience” of being a minority they were likely to make the “wrong” choice in the voting booth.
These men should be applauded, and perhaps even appointed to the Supreme Court when the next vacancy occurs. you see, they have “empathy”, which is something most of you are genetically unable to possess.

1) Right wing extremeists
2) Christians
3) Anti Abortion Groups
4) Disgruntled Veterans
5) 2nd Ammendment Activists
6) People Against Illegal Immigration
7) People who fear Communism
8) People Who Have Lost Jobs to India or China

There will be no logical defense (if any attempt at defense) from the lefty trolls… They’ll pull an Alan Colmes and say “Ah… look over here…”
The BEST defense they will be able to muster was that somehow Bush condoned this… That’s the left’s argument (on pretty much everything), and yet the right keeps falling for this child’s trap all the time.
The response should be that if Bush or whoever was so horrible, why does the Left copy their behavior 10x?

Do I need to ask anyone here why they think Democrats routinely win 80 percent of the vote in Philly? This is not new. Voter intimidation, busing in fraudulent voters from out of state, polling places in private homes and union halls, armed union thugs chasing away official poll watchers – there is no such thing as a clean election in Philly.
This last election was very interesting though. Barack Obama only won 65% of the vote in Philly in the primary, as Mayor Nutter, Gov. Rendell, and many other prominent Dems supported Hillary Clinton. That low support was a big reason why Sen. Clinton won the state by 10%. Obama was concerned enough about driving up black turnout that he came to Philly three times in the fall.

Some attention should be focused here on Deputy AG David Ogden. He got his law degree from Penn. He is known to be the “political” guy at DOJ. I feel comfortable pointing a finger squarely at him on this.
Also do not forget that Obama campaign manager David Plouffe is a Philly native. I’m sure he knows damn well who delivered that 90% vote for Obama in November. I would guess that one call from Plouffe to Ogden took care of this little problem.
