Patterico’s new O’Reilly Factor fun
posted at 8:46 am on May 29, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Yesterday, Bill O’Reilly offered a non-apology apology, as Glenn Reynolds put it, for smearing our site. O’Reilly explained that he was forced into smearing us because we don’t spend our entire day reading comments instead of writing, unlike the responsible folks at his offices, who apparenly police their site in order to make sure that nothing appears on his site that Bill doesn’t personally approve.
That’s absurd, for all the reasons that Allahpundit explained last night, but Patterico decided to put that claim to the test. He signed up for the O’Reilly Factor membership and started perusing their site. He found a couple of examples of Bill O’Reilly’s endorsed political stands (according to the standards he applied to Hot Air, of course). For instance, Bill apparently stands by the accusation that Mary Cheney commits bestiality:
How does Mary Cheney getting married hurt anyone?
How does Mary Cheney getting married to a goat hurt anyone?
Just an example here Chase, don’t get all bent out of shape just because it’s against your morality to marry a goat…………….
It’s right there on his website, after all. That website has Bill O’Reilly’s name on it. According to Bill O’Reilly Standards and Practices, that means he endorses it.
What else does Bill O’Reilly endorse? This looks rather ugly:
NO HOMOS NO HOMOS now will the League arrest me for my right wing statement, perhaps i will be taken off the New Yuk slimes CHRISTMAS card list. what you do or dont do in your bed room is none of my business just dont tell me I am wrong if i say NO MARRIAGE FOR HOMOS NO MARRIAGE FOR HOMOS. Hay maybe you can have a vote and lose and have the courts overturn your vote. Well that cant happen in AMERICA now can it.
to any one whos name begins with an R REMEMBER NO MARRIAGE FOR HOMOS. Awaits to knock on the door from the lack of free speech AG. AND janet baby
Sounds like O’Reilly likes a little hate speech, too! This has been Bill O’Reilly’s personally approved website for almost a week. The commenter who wrote it has almost 2,000 comments already on Bill O’Reilly’s website.
What about it, Bill? Will you stand by these statements and take responsibility for them? After all, you have a lot more staff than we do here at Hot Air, and you’re the one setting the standards on national TV. Either explain these entries on your own site by standing by their content, or feel free to offer the real apology you should have offered us last night. After all, that’s why you have a comments disclaimer on your site — just as we do on ours.
Patterico has the screenshots. He also has plenty of time and an inclination to keep digging. Be sure to keep up with him, and drop a few bucks in the tipjar to help him defray the expense.

I sent an email to the O’Reilly show defending Hot Air with strong language. Your policies about comments make perfect sense to me. And – just as these above examples at his own site demonstrate, some people will leave comments that are offensive. Nevertheless, they absolutely do not reflect either the opinions nor anything remotely like what those who run the blog say.
O’Reilly should have issued a straightforward apology yesterday, and left it at that. I requested that he do so now.
pbundy on May 29, 2009 at 8:52 AM
O’Reilly will now attack Patterico as a “rightwing extremist”.
O’Reilly was great when he first started out, then he made the unfortunate mistake of paying attention to what Media Matters and MoveOn say about him. His best bet would have been to ignore them, now he goes out of his way to be “fair”, “centrist”, “moderate” … and feels he has to periodically attack the right just to show he’s the former.

Often they don’t even reflect the general opinion of the rest of the commenters. You cannot pull out one comment from a blog site and argue that it represents anything but the opinion of the person who wrote it. Wise up O’Reilly.

I remember watching him eight, nine years ago and his show was great. I even read the book he had out at that time The O’Reilly Factor; it wasn’t a bad book. But he has changed and the tenor of his show has changed for the worse IMO.
Keep up the good fight, Ed! Well done

I’m disappointed in O’Reilly. There was no reason for him to attack HotAir, except to try to build his own ego.
kingsjester on May 29, 2009 at 9:08 AM
O’Reilly’s mask has been sliding off for the past years and finally revealed his true face of liberalism. He works in NYC and wants to be with the cool kids and unjustly smear conservatives when he can. The Obama butt kissing was first indication. The folks are not going to listen.
jencab on May 29, 2009 at 9:09 AM
BOR has sinned a great sin in the eyes of the right bloggosphere and he will be punished. Seriously, the more I tune into his show the more he puts me off. The MM Geraldo thing was cowardly on his behalf which got me thinking about his arrogance and ignorance. In his zeal for JF Kerry during the campaign of 04′, he badmouthed the veterans that he so adamitly praises today. He sure had a bad opinion for those that Swift-boaters when it came down to Kerry lying his rear off vs witnessed truth.

As ‘they’ say, no publicity is bad publicity. Hot Air will not lose readers, only gain readers. Although I do understand Bill’s hypocrisy which I believe stems from his ignorance of the net.

If he had courage to match his ego, he would put up his own photo on tonight’s show and label himself a pinhead for attacking Hot Air.
The air here may get heated but it doesn’t have the stench of hate or hypocrisy. Anger and outrage are appropriate reactions to what is being done to America now. God bless Hot Air.

It seems to me that Bill has been getting some ego tutoring from Rush. Both were great early in their careers, the problem with both of them now is that they have let their accomplishments of insight become a principle in which they stand on, instead of build on. The UNCF had a great campaign slogan in the 70′s http://www.adcouncil.org/default.aspx?id=134 (a mind is a terrible thing to waste) sadly, now it seem both these men losing theirs through attempting to become what they are perceived to be, not who they actually are, or being true to what put them into the positions they now have.

I saw the original slam on BO’R and while the post from Free Republic was a little over the edge, the post from Hot Air was hardly threatening. It called Barack “Hussein”. OOOOOOO, that’s really ugly.
If that’s the worst post he could muster up, I’d say Hot Air is doing pretty good. Anyway, we do still have freedom of speech, maybe not for long, but BO’R should be defending the posters’ right to express an opinion.
stenwin77 on May 29, 2009 at 9:23 AM
I applaud Bill O’s stand against the liberal, wacko social agenda and the absurdity of the MSM’s ignoring the Democrat’s corruption. I just think he has tried so hard to be fair he comes off at times as compromised and naive. He has been a target of the loonie left’s constant barrage so long I don’t think he realized how it can wear you down. I will give him benefit of the doubt. For now.

Knucklehead on May 29, 2009 at 9:25 AM
Basically I like Bill O’Reilly and I like Ann Coulter too.But I know why there is continual tension between the two-ego and business competition. Both of them are essentially in the book selling business to which O’Reilly adds ratings on the most popular show on cable TV (of which, alas, he reminds us endlessly.)
Obviously O’Reilly, by trashing ‘Hot Air’, attempted to expand his viewer base and thus his ratings. Good business, poor morality. When he got caught with his hand in the ‘Hot Air’ cookie jar, he knew he had gone too far but his ego would allow him to only make a back-handed apology. (But maybe you’ll get a full apology if you become an O’Reilly Premium Member and buy his book.)
MaiDee on May 29, 2009 at 9:26 AM
O’Reilly has overly inflated opinion of himself. Those remarks this pinhead put on his show from the HotAir commentator were not offensive (except in his little Havard educated brain). Geez…we can’t call Obama by his middle name without offending O’Dummy?
O’Reilly needs to spend more time in his search for that one person who sets the oil prices. So far, he’s had as much luck as OJ has in finding the killers of his wife.

appst38 on May 29, 2009 at 9:27 AM
I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt yesterday. But when he came off with his non-apology apology and his asinine reasoning about how blogs should work… eh he moved down a peg or two in my book…
This is after he let Miller essentially perform the Tango on his show immediately after telling Republicans not to cause a Race-Based War… Oh, and the Sexting is a little ridiculous. Does he really need to show the pictures? I think we know what Sexting is. But then again, he’s probably explaining it to the naive Americans that don’t know what sex is yet.

Upstater85 on May 29, 2009 at 9:30 AM
Ouch, what is that saying about stones and glass houses? lol
I am dying to see him try to equate using such language on his site to using the President’s LEGAL middle name. (Which doesn’t help our cause generally, but it is the man’s actual name.) Last I checked most in the gay community do not go by the foul language found on BILL O’REILLY’s site (emphasis intended).

jamc1316 on May 29, 2009 at 9:31 AM
I agree with you, and make no mistake. Hot Air is not comparing your comment to those. Ed and gang are just pointing out that Bill O has much more hateful stuff on his own site than the comment of yours he decided to pull out for faux outrage the other night.

Maybe you can start an O’Reilly Watch blog, dogsouljah
blatantblue on May 29, 2009 at 9:32 AM
No offense, but you, AP, and Michelle screwed the pooch here. Michelle and O’Reilly clearly have bad blood stemming from when O’Reilly refused to defend her from Geraldo, leading Michelle to resign from his show. So O’Reilly takes a swipe at HotAir based on the comment. Your response was just to say “he confused a comment with a post and unfairly smeared us” without providing any further comment. As such, you walked RIGHT INTO the response you got from O’Reilly (“you should police your comments!”) that I predicted yesterday afternoon would happen.
The proper response, from the beginning, was to say that the attack was unfair BECAUSE “the comment was unrepresentative of the quality of comments on our site, and we take several proactive measures to “police” our site, including having closed registration, active monitoring, and responsiveness to any complaints by our member community.”
Anyway, it’ll be interesting to see how O’Reilly responds to Patterico’s attacks. We need to keep up the pressure on O’Reilly to force him to address this subject again, because my guess is he’ll want to bury it now that his own site has been exposed as having carrying this kind of content.

You were trying to be cute, not hurtful, I’m sure, but the “Hussein” reference was inflammatory. (Why? Because it appeals to the “secret Muslim” memes and other below-the-belt attacks on Obama from the election.)
What that lesson should teach all of HotAir’s commenters is that, in some way, what you write here does reflect on the site as a whole. Just be careful.

Michelle has enough allies on other shows (Fox & Friends, Cavuto, and Beck) to where she can hit O’Reilly on-air and get away with it. M-Kat cannot. Doing so would be the end of her careers on FoxNews.
For what it’s worth, I think Allah and Ed should cut their ties to Carpenter. She backstabbed HotAir. She knows this site well, and had the opportunity on-air to stick up for HotAir by asking if it was a comment and then saying “well, I visit this site a lot, and this comment is out of the ordinary for the site” or something to that effect. It wouldn’t have been an attack on O’Reilly so it wouldn’t have jeopardized her future appearances, but it would have helped to set the record straight.
