Glenn Beck: Hey, what if a million people stopped paying their taxes in protest?

A follow-up to last night’s Craig T. Nelson cry of rebellion against … whatever, worth watching for the harrowing perspective Beck provides on just how much of the national debt load each of us carry. He’s careful to say for liability purposes that he’s not condoning this, no doubt to the relief of Fox News’s legal department, but he pretty clearly wouldn’t be heartbroken if a grassroots movement to this end arose on its own. I remember a lot of fiscal cons baiting me in the comments here for endorsing TARP way back when. Who’s in?

Of course, Andy Jackson didn’t have to contend with an overpowering and overtaxing federal government. He also didn’t have to deal with an income tax. All he had to deal with was being an adulterer in a time when being an adulterer meant real shame, not Hollywood fame.

It’s very simple. Earn less money. This year I paid not a cent in taxes. They owe me money. The best way, and only legal way, to stage a tax revolt, is to earn a lot less. If one lives at or near the “poverty line”, you will pay no taxes. Just learn to live cheap. That starves the government. The better you must live, the better the government gets to live. It’s a symbiotic relationship. What feeds the beast is actually the need of the tax payers to earn. Reduce your needs, and you will starve the socialists of their gravy train.
You can also help by getting a job where you work under the table. Work for cash. Barter services.

All due respect to Mr. Beck, it’s not a matter of “not paying taxes”, it’s a matter of “avoiding taxes”.
The former is illegal. The latter, given the current asshats in Washington (of *ALL* political alignments) is almost a moral obligation.
Or, in more simple terms, Shrug, baby shrug!

Excessive taxes should be challenged in court on the grounds that they violate section 1 of the 13th amendment. To wit:
“Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime where of the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.”

I wonder if there is a legal half measure that may still make a point. For example, what if 20 million people all claimed a large number of deductions, thus greatly reducing their payroll deductions, but kept the difference in savings so that they could paid at the end of the year. Wouldn’t this delay alone, if enough people followed through, make a point while remaining on the right side of the law? (I’m not sure…)
FloatingRock on May 29, 2009 at 9:54 PM
Once again, I ask, when do we secede? (I live in Texas.)
Back when it was tried last time, the laws for divorce were much, much more stringent. Now, with the no-fault divorce laws, divorcing ourselves from the union shouldn’t be a problem. :) :) :)

Jackson was a great man, and like Bagehot says of the wisdom of crowds, exactly the right man to lead America in his slice of spacetime.
GW was elected by a nanowafer thin margin of 5 electoral votes on culture war issues. When 911 happened he was completely out of his depth, and didn’t have the substrate to deal with it.
Bush would have been a fine president if 911 hadn’t happened.
But he was useless when it did.
strangelet on May 29, 2009 at 10:06 PM
But what if they had filed their taxes on time with the correct number of dependents and paid the difference, would it be legal then?
FloatingRock on May 29, 2009 at 10:09 PM
This is an excellent idea, as it is likely our last hope of saving the republic… but I’ll admit, I don’t have the balls to do it. I’ve been saying for years that I’d like to refuse paying SS and medicare, sense there isn’t even a slight chance it will be around for us, but now that our socialist dictator president (and I mean that) is deliberately destroying our economy to usher in his view of what this country should be, I’m feeling like I don’t want to throw in to the income tax either.
The only good thing is, I have been unemployed for most of this year…. (Bad news is, I was self-employed as an internet marketing contract “on paper” for the past 6.5 years, so I can’t get unemployment, so I’m blowing my savings). So the bright side is, I have no money to give them. Bad news is, I can’t find a job.
Anyway, to sum up… Great idea, because DC would sh** their pants if any large number of people protested by refusing to pay taxes… but I don’t have the nuts to do it because I’m afraid there wouldn’t be a large enough movement to make any noise.

Ted Torgerson on May 29, 2009 at 10:15 PM
You really are historically ignorant. The divorce between Rachel Donaldson Robards married Jackson in 1791, while under the belief that the divorce was already a done deal. Unfortunately, there was a technicality which was eventually corrected. (Presidents: Metro Books, 2004) Also, women could sue for divorce in this period in many states. Like males though, they had to have grounds–no such animal as no-fault divorce. Grounds included cruelty, drunkenness, and adultery as well as others. (Handbook of divorce and relationship dissolution by Mark A. Fine, John H. Harvey. Published by Routledge, 2006) Very often, due to the difficulty in securing divorce–regardless of who filed–couples agreed to simply part.
Jackson’s problems with his Vice-President were personal more so than political. He found out that Calhoun wanted to punish Jackson for invading Florida during the Seminole War in 1819. Jackson’s actions in the Nullification Crisis were as much, if not more, motivated by his hatred of Calhoun and by his view of the position of the office of the presidency than they were by any sentimental attachment to the Union. The famous toast, “The Union, it must be preserved,” was as much a personal stab at Calhoun as it was a political statement regarding his intentions.
During the Nullification Crisis, while Jackson blustered and threatened, he also dragged his feet on carrying out the Force Bill authorizing him to invade South Carolina, giving time for backroom negotiations that resulted in the Compromise Tariff Bill which reduced all tariffs for ten years, effectively removing the main bone of contention–the Tariff of Abominations.
Jackson also torpedoed the Bank of the United States and opposed much of Henry Clay’s American System which called for Federal intervention in the economy. Added to that, Jackson issued the Specie Circular stating that the federal government would only take silver, gold, and sometimes Virginia land scrip for federal lands being sold in the West.
Jackson was also very much pro-slavery. He called for a ban on mailing anti-slavery literature and supported the passage of a gag rule forbidding any discussion of the issue of slavery in the House as well as supporting a House resolution stating that Congress had no power to interfere with slavery in the states.
Jackson also invented the spoils system which Bambi has taken full advantage of. While Jackson was a decisive leader and one of our stronger presidents, he had numerous flaws–don’t make him out to be something he isn’t.
As to his view towards Beck–it would depend on whether you’re talking about President Jackson or Private Citizen Jackson. Private Citizen Jackson would be in agreement with him. President Jackson might call him names in public, but while doing that, he would be dismantling the IRS at warp speed. Jackson–both President and Private Citizen–would loathe the IRS with an incredibly intensity.

I merely pointed out that he was, by his actions, a weak person.

Very true. Too true.
Eh. I don’t see any of the Latin/South American states doing anything. They could, if they adopted the traditional values of America, but they won’t. The cultures down there just aren’t set up for it.
A poster in the Powerline forum once pointed out a very interesting and major difference between the ex-British colonies and the ex-Spanish/Portugese ones – the British colonies were essentially built by commercial concerns while the Spanish and Portugese were more tools of the state used to just suck resources out of the areas, reflecting some of the lingering influences of the long muslim occupation of Spain. It seems that these origins of the colonies insinuated themselves very deeply into the cultures of the states that would eventually arise, which goes a good way to explaining why the US developed the way it did and all of the Latin/South American countries were always retarded in their developments.
There’s no question that whatever state moves towards individualism and private property will attract the best people and capital, and experience fantastic growth as the US has enjoyed, but I just don’t see which nations are able to make this transformation, as many of their cultures just aren’t built to handle it.

RE: refuse to buy.
Which is exactly what will happen if the democrats push through a federal VAT, or sales tax. People will refuse to purchase anything other then the absolute minimum necessities.
And this economy will come to a halt.
Consumer demand drives this economy, and anything that stifles consumption will crater the national economy. And it becomes self re-enforcing when people start to lose their jobs.

Well, another way to phrase that is “what is the difference between the green agenda and a low standard of living”. The answer, of course, is none.
Which leads to the other question…how long will these pampered, lazy, overfed, idiots who voted for Obama and lived well in our free market, consumer driven economy actually put up with a life of want and privation?
The answer…until 2012.
