Does Bill O’Reilly read Fox Nation?
posted at 11:36 am on May 29, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
While Bill O’Reilly takes shots at Hot Air for a Hussein reference in our comments — even though both Allahpundit and I have repeatedly rejected that line of attack on this blog — he apparently doesn’t read the offerings at his own network’s political blog, Fox Nation. They have the same kind of open comment policy we do, of course, which we support, but which O’Reilly find so distasteful in others (but not himself, apparently). One enterprising Hot Air reader checked to see whether the HA comment that Bill found so distasteful could be found at Fox Nation, and found it in abundance.
When will we see an O’Reilly Factor exposé on the lack of standards at Fox Nation?

Don’t get me wrong; I’m not trying to hold Fox Nation accountable for the comments left in its threads. Fox could not run a dynamic, interesting political website if it spent all its time policing its comments sections, and neither can we. For that matter, neither can O’Reilly, but we’re not the ones issuing sanctimonious head-wags on national TV for comments that also appear on the same network’s own political forum. It would be nice if he’d stop being a hypocritical, screeching scold and acknowledge that.
How about it, Bill? We’ll await the segment on your criticism of Fox Nation — and your own website — with great anticipation.
Update: David Knowles at AOL asks a good question: “But when did O’Reilly of all people become so concerned about restricting opinions that one group or other may find offensive? Isn’t that the entire premise of his show?”

O’Reilly is the personification of the phony intellectual conservative who cares what the Left says bout him. So, he goes out of his way to try to appear “fair and open minded.” All it does is hurt him even more. He’s not the only one, but he’s among the bets known and worst at doing it.

“Sanctimonious windbag” is about the best description for Bill O these days. Used to be a big fan…but over time, slipped away.
Still sayin’, he singled out HotAir simply because it’s MM’s site, and he still holds some kind of grudge.

I think the big problem with O’Reilly (besides his expanding ego) is that, like most people just a few years older than me, he’s a technophobe. Computers scare him. He still has the image of a 3-story Eniac with a staff of Phd’s required to even turn the thing on.
I’ve seen this same fear with co-workers, executives, family…they know some of the buzzwords, but are scared to death to even look at a computer monitor.
So he’s totally dependent on what his staff tells him. And his staff is apparently anti-MM. Isn’t that why he sided with Geraldo in the first place?

I know its cliche but two wrongs do not make a right. Bad behavior does not justify bad behavior. Comments or bloggers people on some of these forums, here on Hotair, Foxnation, Kos, Huffington Post say some nasty personal things not just on politicians they do not like but also on people who have the nerve to not agree with them 100% I was told to “take the tampon” out because I had the nerve to defend Colin Powell. Is this the kind of debate and forum for free and open exchange of ideas that we want? Shouldn’t we as conservatives and defenders of more traditional values be above name calling?
What gets me even more than the personal attacks on the political people is the nasty stuff people on this board sometimes say to each other…the eating of our own fellow conservatives.
Whether O’Reilly understands the difference between a blog or a comment is moot, he is correct to point out the hateful things people have posted on many political websites of both the left and right.
arizonateacher on May 29, 2009 at 11:56 AM
I agree. O’Reilly’s ego has gotten out of hand.
Evidently he has forgotten what got him to where he is.
And to take shots at Michelle, as he did, shows that he has somehow lost his compass.
Bill should take some time and reflect on what kind of audience he wants.
I’ll take some time and decide if The Factor is even worth considering anymore.

Bill rues the day? When did O’Reilly ever care about anything beyond himself? When did O’Reilly ever keep one opinion that didn’t shift in time?
It wasn’t necessarily “personal” using HotAir’s comment (though it may likely have been). It was Bill’s back handed covetous compliment, bringing HotAir into his conversation to make his point in his derogatory fashion. /apologist would say.
BUT he absolutely misses the mark that HUSSEIN is (still) Obama’s middle name, that Obama still uses his middle name. It IS his legitimate name, whether he is or not.

You’re preaching to the quire, Buck. He chose the worst path, to rely on his staff. This can only lead to trouble, because he’s stuck in the position of defending the position of someone whose motivations may not be as “pure” as his.
I’ve seen exec’s manipulated by their toadies or consultants to do things (stupid or evil things) they would never have thought of themselves, and if they ever did consider doing so, would have dismissed them. But it’s so tempting to delegate, especially when your own table is full.
Doesn’t make it right, as we clearly see in this case.

Whilst I think Bill O’Reilly does do a fairly good job at times of getting to the bottom of issues, He does tend to get a bit carried away when it comes to his ego and that ruins his show for me.
In a way that’s probably why I enjoy the Glenn Beck Show so much, because Beck really doesn’t appear to give a toss about what people think of him or if any of the elites take him seriously at all.

O’Reilly’s example is wrong, but his broader message is correct. Both right AND leftwing sites need to try and enforce a little more decorum. Name-calling doesn’t help anyone.
Is there a 1:1 correlation between BusHitler and BHussein references? Does the exact ratio really matter?
I’d like to think that Conservatives love US Citizens, and hate liberal policies. The ad hominems will do nothing to convince the people you’re yelling at. Why use waste your energy on uneffective thoughts? I like calling politicians morons as much as the next guy, but does that really convince them to listen to me?

You know I am reminded of the White Men Can’t Jump Line, “rabbit ears, am I getting to you”.
You folks think awfully highly of yourself. frankly, O’Reilly could really care less. Your blog gets a few hundred thousand hits daily whereas he is watched by several million people daily.
Second, he didn’t slam Hot Air, but rather he pointed out that this particular comment was nonsensical. Which, frankly, it was. Now, you all can’t seem to get enough. Maybe you are hoping that you will get more exposure if you start a war with him, or maybe, you just have a serious problem with criticism.
He hasn’t made some sort of crusade of railing against Hot Air as racist. He corrected himself last night and pointed out that this was a comment and not a post. He has often pointed out just how extreme comments can be on blogs. This one was extreme. It doesn’t reflect the site as a whole and nor did he say it did.
Frankly, what you’re really upset about is that the only major exposure of this blog is negative. So be it, and if every reader stops watching O’Reilly so be it, but I hope you all don’t actually start believing that in the larger scheme of things it matters.
mike volpe on May 29, 2009 at 12:11 PM
Good post.
O’Reilly used to be a lot better when he wasn’t so sensitive to criticism from the Left. (they’re going to hate you anyway, Bill.) There’s no comparison between this site’s blog posts and those on Daily Kos (and the comments are a lot better too).
O’Reilly needs to stop trying to look fair to the Left, and start trying to actually be fair.

jake-the-goose on May 29, 2009 at 12:12 PM
I didn’t know that.
It would explain how he stepped into a steaming pile unawares.
As per his inkling to prefer siding with Geraldo vs. Malkin, as much as anything, it would have been based upon how much OReilly had personally invested in each at that point. Taking “sides” spontaneously goes with impulse, familiarity. The male chauvinism in OReilly is another compulsive factor that he’d not likely admit even to himself, being as proud as he is. But I wouldn’t put it past OReilly’s choice to defend Geraldo vs. Malkin in his own gamble as to who is more popular, whose following is strongest. Ratings ever trump.
Maturity is marked by alliances amongst those with differences who share a more important goal.
Making a mountain out of OReilly’s molehill isn’t helping anyone construct anything conservative. It does, however, play into Allahpundit’s progressive corner with impetus.
OReilly is wrong. Nothing new. Now that the reasons OReilly is wrong are clarified, no sense kicking his dead dog.

Ive been quietly watching this entire smear play itself out. I actually thought O’Reilly would stand up for the freedom of speech. I dont think he cares if he loses any viewership over this infraction. I wanted to add that I would expect O’Reilly who is both a news commentor and an educator to realize that these blogs and comment areas provide a great cathartic service to those on both sides of the aisle who may or may not be happy with the current leadership in this country.
I am entirely disappointed that he chose to pick a few minor comments to smear the entire blog. Politics touch just about every [factor] of our lives,no pun intended. The ideal of freedom of speech is that we can in America still speak our mind, freely, even if occasionally we speak with half of it.
I hope O’Reilly will apologize and invite Hotair and the others he smeared onto the Factor so that the evidence presented in this thread can be aired and dealt with. I think its time we all call for a greater level of respectful discourse.
If O’Reilly does not clear this up,he WILL be on the losing side of hypocrisy. He chose to throw the left a bone by saying this about Hotair. If he thinks a few minor idiotic comments represent the entire blog, then he must think EVERY comment board in EVERY news reporting agency is terrible. I hit an average of 30 news/blogs a day. I have not found a single one that filters negative comments consistently. The ones that are have very few comments at all. As Americans, we value our freedom of speech highly, and we love our armchair anonymity.
Mr.O’Reilly-be part of the solution, not part of the problem. Start with your show, then the blogs. This is the reality TV era. Its time for O’Reilly to catch up with it.United States carries many people from all edges of the political spectrum. We will either respect all of them, or listen to none of them. Do we really want to live in a country that does not respect freedom of speech from all political spectrums?

If Barack H. Obama is so ashamed of his middle name, why did his spiritual leader (Jeremiah Wright), who pretends to be a Christian, emphasize Obama’s Muslim-sounding middle name?
After all, Obama wrote a whole book to dream about his father, who gave him that middle name…
So maybe our President should ask Jeremiah Wright to re-baptize him as Barry Stanley Dunham, from his maternal grandfather, and he can fit right in with Dorothy and Toto from Kansas.

It’s about time that the worst bloviating fool, on cable, Bill O’Reilly, takes a dose of his own medicine.
Since when is it blasphemous to use a person’s actual middle name, even though the name is rather creepy and quite apropos? Obama’s middle name is-what-it-is and it is reasonable to assume that it is perfect fodder for those who fear his Marxist policies.
Condemning the use of Barack Obama’s middle name is political correctness run amuck.

It doesn’t do to simply qualify everyone with a free pass into headquarters, just as it doesn’t do to discriminate blindly against innocence.
I think Michael Savage hit the nerve last night. Politically, the Marxist Obama is yet a diplomatic adolescent. That observation is not emotionally delivered. To receive it on the emotional level (and respond in an emotional level) is not a mark against the observation or the observer sharing perception, but a mark on the recipient.
Hussein is a name, a given name. Until the name is retracted, it remains the official name.
Obama’s record is his own to defend. To date, it is radically Leftist. Obama is abruptly taking our government radically to the left. “You ain’t seen nuthin’ yet,” is how Obama put it most recently.

ummmm…honest question:
What is the difference between referring to George Bush (43) as “W” and referring to Obama as “Hussein?” It is, in fact, his middle name.

O’Reilly often calls for boycotts, Spain, France, etc. I still watch the bloviator because of his guests but I could easily participate in a 30 or 60 day O’Reilly boycott along with fellow Hot Air readers.
