Carl Levin: Cheney’s lying about the CIA memos that allegedly prove torture works

posted at 7:35 pm on May 29, 2009 by Allahpundit

Really? So Cheney put his reputation on the line and started turning up on television everywhere to make the case that enhanced interrogation works, even though he secretly knows it doesn’t? And Obama has the smoking-gun memos in his possession and could destroy Cheney at any moment by declassifying them — and yet hasn’t? And Cheney knows that, and yet still he presses on?

He must be some poker player.

Levin, speaking at the Foreign Policy Association’s annual dinner in Washington on Wednesday, said an investigation by his committee into detainee abuse charges over the use of the techniques — now deemed torture by the Obama administration — “gives the lie to Mr. Cheney’s claims.”

The Michigan Democrat told the crowd that the two CIA documents that Cheney wants released “say nothing about numbers of lives saved, nor do the documents connect acquisition of valuable intelligence to the use of abusive techniques.”

“I hope that the documents are declassified, so that people can judge for themselves what is fact, and what is fiction,” he added…

“Cheney’s world view, which so dominated the Bush years and dishonored our nation, gained a little traction last week — enough to persuade me to address it head-on here tonight,” Levin said. “I do so because if the abusive interrogation techniques that he champions, the face of which were the pictures of abuse at Abu Ghraib, if they are once more seen as representative of America, our security will be severely set back.”

That’s an outright smear, of course, addressed by Cheney himself in his AEI speech last week. Bush backed him up today too, declining to knock Obama but reasserting that “the information we got saved lives.” Exit question: Now that Levin’s on board, we have bipartisan agreement. How about declassifying those memos, champ?

….Now that they have absolute power, the Dems like Levin have lost all sense of propriety. They’ve been made crazy by power.

How can they lose what they didn’t have?

tgharris on May 29, 2009 at 8:50 PM

As for the memos, I’d caution anyone against presuming too much about the content should they ever be released or leaked. It’s quite possible that those predisposed to believe Cheney will find support for the pro-interrogation position, and those predisposed to believe Levin will remain unpersuaded.

Neither my son, nor any other son was ordered to torture or rape anyone. You know nothing about my son, his actions in the field of battle or his courage and honor in the face of our enemies. He is willing to sacrifice all for his country, and you besmirch his honor sitting safely behind your soiled keyboard.

Someone thank Levin for resurrecting the issue just as the Sotomayor nomination had pushed Cheney off the front page.

I would like nothing more than Obama having to deal with Cheney on national security matters while at the same time trying to babysit Sotomayor’s nomination. I’m hoping that frees up enough hand in Congress to torpedo Obama on his vaunted health-care reform effort.

I’ll be hoping that June is a terrible month for the O.

I wonder how they would feel if someone asked what color or race the rapists were in the report ? Talk about not wanting to play the identity card then.

Maybe Obama has more than one reason to cover this up ?

Dunno Famous…you know my view with regards to this from other places…

if GIs conduct a capital offense they should be executed very publically in the nation they did the act in, in a CoIn conflict we simply can’t win the PR war….

that said I know in my bones the donks would gladly trash our moral superiority by openly highlighting these actions if they thought it would hurt the GOP and thus I am certain the photos are like Abu Gonad overhyped.

any pictures you quote to have seen, are either photoshopped, manipulated by left wing idiots, or from abu-gharib,and those soldiers have been prosecuted. Iraqi police/soldiers may even have their own thing going on, and i would even bet that some of these lies are from Saddam’s own personal collection.

I bet you live in California somewhere, where the waterboarding of only 3 detainees probably saved your sorry ass from a real catastrophy.

Yeah the uniform doesnt give anyone the right to comit crimes and those people are punished. I wonder why some wont jsut post the name of the offenders and the punishments they received ? That would quell the whole debate.

But Obama was so keen on getting thse pictures out that I felt something more than just a few generals shooting this idea down would derail that. Something else motivated him.

Why the GOP again isnt hammering the left for attacking fellow americans while trying to get terrorists off the hook I will never understand. Its a killer issue to hammer the left with and we ignore it.

William Amos on May 29, 2009 at 8:59 PM

This is classic Carl Levin. The documents “say nothing about the number of lived saves”?

How could they possibly know the number? They would have to know how many people would have died in an attack they prevented.

So, in your silly little world the torture and raping of prisoners at Abu Ghraib was a procedure, one set in motion by direct orders from our commander in chief.

Tell me, person with head up our arse, if that is true why were only a handful of troops found guilty of these atrocities? If there were orders, as you claim, every one in the entire chain of command, from Bush down to the lowest ranking private, could have easily been prosecuted.

Gee, I guess their weren’t any orders, were there?

Daniel Pearl (October 10, 1963 – February 1, 2002) was an American journalist who was kidnapped and murdered in Karachi, Pakistan.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abu_Ghraib_prisoner_abuse

Beginning in 2004, accounts of physical, psychological, and sexual abuse, including torture, sodomy[1] and homicide[2] of prisoners held in the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq (also known as Baghdad Correctional Facility) came to public attention.

The Daily Beast has confirmed that the photographs of abuses at Iraq’s Abu Ghraib prison, which President Obama, in a reversal, decided not to release, depict sexually explicit acts, including a uniformed soldier receiving oral sex from a female prisoner, a government contractor engaged in an act of sodomy with a male prisoner and scenes of forced masturbation, forced exhibition, and penetration involving phosphorous sticks and brooms.
These descriptions come on the heels of a British report yesterday about the photographs that contained some of these revelations—and whose credibility was questioned by the Pentagon.

Speaking of Abu Ghraib…

Allowing unsecured cameras in a war zone was and is rank insanity.

All you get are potential propaganda images/victories for the enemy.

Idiots, from Rumsfeld on down, to permit this staggeringly stupid violation of basic intel containment procedures.

And the moronic soldier who accidentally received the pictures (from the sadistic imbecile who took them) and who then released these photos, should have known it would result in a revitalized Jihad and the deaths of his fellows soldiers.

Incredibly infantile idiot.

Levin is a lying, Clintonesque spin-meister.

And all future terrorists should simply be shot when caught.

No more psyops advantages for those who want to slice off our heads with kitchen knives.

profitsbeard on May 29, 2009 at 11:03 PM

This is for the Highlander.
Looks like the “realdeal”.

These descriptions come on the heels of a British report yesterday about the photographs that contained some of these revelations—and whose credibility was questioned by the Pentagon.

dear Jesus God.

beekiller on May 29, 2009 at 11:06 PM

Someone thank Levin for resurrecting the issue just as the Sotomayor nomination had pushed Cheney off the front page.

I would like nothing more than Obama having to deal with Cheney on national security matters while at the same time trying to babysit Sotomayor’s nomination. I’m hoping that frees up enough hand in Congress to torpedo Obama on his vaunted health-care reform effort.

Not only that, but the Strange one’s boy king, Obama, has reserved the authority to use EIT himself, should the need arise. He says it’s torture, its immoral, possibly a war crime…. but he might need it one day, too. Maybe he can claim he misled himself about the torture thing! Maybe he can say he was driven temporarily mad by the Abu Ghraib photos… yeah, that’s the ticket!!

How long has Carl Levin been in the Senate? I am so damn sick of seeing him peering through those fracking prof glasses of his and talking down to people.

fiatboomer on May 29, 2009 at 11:14 PM

Never bring an idiot like Levin to a debate. Talk about wading in the shallow end of the gene pool. Levin is at home there.

GarandFan on May 29, 2009 at 11:24 PM

My money on the honest one is for Cheney. I am not sure what GFU means exactly, but it sounds appropriate for Stangelet. For him/her/it to talk to any parent about their child serving in the military is obscene. People like Stranglet should leave this country if it is so immoral and corrupt. See how you like it under Nutjob in Iran.

Strangelet! You ignorant POS!

In the US, prisoners routinely wear orange jumpsuits. I see them every day in prisons and jails.

However, in the mideast, those who are about to be executed are forced to wear orange.

It had nothing to do with Abu Ghraib, dumba$$.

I remember reading it at the time. And over the years, I have seen various photos of people being executed in muslim countries and noticed they were wearing orange. I don’t know if orange has religious significance or it is cultural.

I know we like organge for prisoners because it makes it more difficult for them to hide.

I dunno who has done more to mislead and deliberately divide the nation and the world for partisan purposes:
Levin
Rockefeller
Dean
Gore

Honestly, those 4 deliberately chose to mislead and divide the nation in 2002, and have succeeded beyond their wildest dreams. C’mon Carl, read Bush’s 9/6/06 speech and tell us he lied.

When I was at the DC Tax Day tea party there were some Gitmo protesters dressed in orange jumpsuits. They put hoods on their heads and were chained together and led across the park and lined up against the White House fence. When they first starting gathering and changing clothes, I told my mother to keep an eye on that group in case we needed to run. My brother had me paranoid about being in the center of the crowd. My mom and I ended up next to the stage anyway. There were some loser Acorn protesters there as well.

TXMomof3 on May 30, 2009 at 12:04 AM

This whole thing is a diversion…whenever things are going bad for your Administration, you blame the guy that preceded you.

And since the war in Iraq is pretty much a non issue now, the Smirking Chimps on the Left are gouging their eyeballs out in frustration.

So they have to keep bringing up stuff that happened years ago, and that has already been dealt with by the proper authorities.

Del Dolemonte on May 30, 2009 at 12:13 AM

I’m looking through some reading glasses trying to affect the appearance of an everyday office working stiff. But really I’m just looking down my nose at you because I’m powerful and you’re not. Now I’m biting on the end of one of the temples, as though I’m thinking. This look always works. Trust me I’ve been doing this act for 30 years. Now I’m reading a statement that some staffer handed to me. “Abu Ghraib something Cheney something turture something.” My state’s economy is in a death spiral with the worst unemployment in the United States and whose major industry has gone bankrupt. But what’s important is to attack the former vice president about Kalid Sheik Muhammad getting water boarded. I am Carl Levin a disgrace.

He must be some poker player.

Cheney’s taking no risk.

It works like this:

Cheney: “There are secret memo’s the prove I’m right”
Obama: Either “the memo’s don’t say that” or “there are no memos”
Cheney: “Aha, they won’t release the secret memos because they would prove I’m right!”

Cheney himself in his AEI speech last week. Bush backed him up today too, declining to knock Obama but reasserting that “the information we got saved lives.”

Bush, Cheney and Obama ALL AGREE, the info they got through EI saved lives, thousands of lives.

The ONLY difference is that Obama THINKS that info COULD HAVE been gotten without EI!

strangelet:

You do not know what you are talking about. We were seeing beheading videos long before Iraq and not all of them were even from Iraq as far as that is concerned. This is a mode of execution that these murderers have used for years. If you were not so completely ignorant of the subject you would know that.

As for Abu Ghraib, it was not something that was sanctioned by Bush or anyone else in his administration, Levin knows that all to well. He is just running his mouth for the benefit of partisans like you. In fact, if any of that is true, then Levin himself had an obligation to speak up and did not. So he is either lying now or he was a party to what he says is criminal behavior then. Which is it? Liar or criminal?

Terrye on May 30, 2009 at 6:03 AM

And what is more strangelet, Sy Hersch has been wrong time and again. He also swore that Bush was going to invade or attack Iran before he left office. He swore he had the goods on him. Well, did Bush invade?

Terrye on May 30, 2009 at 6:04 AM

As far as our collective honor is concerned, I would think that allowing Saddam Hussein to break his agreements with us, kill his own people, bribe UN security council members and turn a humanitarian aid program into a slush fund…would have done a little something to our honor. I would think the US Senate passing the Iraqi Liberation Act overwhelmingly and then doing nothing to liberate Iraq would have made us look like liars and frauds….but then people like strangelet have an entirely different view of honor than I do.
