Carl Levin: Cheney’s lying about the CIA memos that allegedly prove torture works

posted at 7:35 pm on May 29, 2009 by Allahpundit

Really? So Cheney put his reputation on the line and started turning up on television everywhere to make the case that enhanced interrogation works, even though he secretly knows it doesn’t? And Obama has the smoking-gun memos in his possession and could destroy Cheney at any moment by declassifying them — and yet hasn’t? And Cheney knows that, and yet still he presses on?

He must be some poker player.

Levin, speaking at the Foreign Policy Association’s annual dinner in Washington on Wednesday, said an investigation by his committee into detainee abuse charges over the use of the techniques — now deemed torture by the Obama administration — “gives the lie to Mr. Cheney’s claims.”

The Michigan Democrat told the crowd that the two CIA documents that Cheney wants released “say nothing about numbers of lives saved, nor do the documents connect acquisition of valuable intelligence to the use of abusive techniques.”

“I hope that the documents are declassified, so that people can judge for themselves what is fact, and what is fiction,” he added…

“Cheney’s world view, which so dominated the Bush years and dishonored our nation, gained a little traction last week — enough to persuade me to address it head-on here tonight,” Levin said. “I do so because if the abusive interrogation techniques that he champions, the face of which were the pictures of abuse at Abu Ghraib, if they are once more seen as representative of America, our security will be severely set back.”

That’s an outright smear, of course, addressed by Cheney himself in his AEI speech last week. Bush backed him up today too, declining to knock Obama but reasserting that “the information we got saved lives.” Exit question: Now that Levin’s on board, we have bipartisan agreement. How about declassifying those memos, champ?

Geez…Levin knows Obama won’t declassify the memos…so he’s going on the offensive. Talk about farce. Now that they have absolute power, the Dems like Levin have lost all sense of propriety. They’ve been made crazy by power.

AUINSC on May 29, 2009 at 7:39 PM

So if it was torture under US law, prosecute already.

Every day the Obama Justice Department doesn’t prosecute anyone is another day it’s clear there was no violation of the law.

J.E. Dyer on May 29, 2009 at 7:40 PM

My money’s on Cheney. Just tell America what kind of disaster was stopped, than Obama will have to release the memos to deter the media storm. What are they gonna do, jail him?

Go Cheney!

JellyToast on May 29, 2009 at 7:43 PM

What if the memos aren’t clear? And by clear, I mean they don’t say…Carl Levin, the EITs stopped an attack on LA. I doubt they do. We would be back to square one. Which way you fall in the EIT debate will determine whether it is clear one way or the other.

Sue on May 29, 2009 at 7:43 PM

They’ve been made crazy by power.

AUINSC on May 29, 2009 at 7:39 PM

I don’t think that’s it, otherwise Cheney and Bush would be on trial by now. The thing is, the Democrats know that deep down, in spite of the years of demonization, the public agrees with Cheney and Bush on this.

ddrintn on May 29, 2009 at 7:44 PM

which means this weasel knows obama won’t release the memos. Cheney should double down and call the bluff and just tell us what was in the memos even if it violates federal secrecy law and dare Obama to prosecute…in discovery the memos can be requested as evidence.

elduende on May 29, 2009 at 7:44 PM

the face of which were the pictures of abuse at Abu Ghraib

Levin is lying and the memos have nothing to so with Abu and the fact that he linked them pretty much shows he is peddling nonsense that he knows will remain classified.

rob verdi on May 29, 2009 at 7:46 PM

If Cheney’s the poker player we suspect he is, this might be his next hand:

Reveal the flavor, or even some, of the actual content of the still-classified memos — just enough to get one of The One’s proxies to cry for prosecution. That puts the onus back on Obama.

If someone is stupid enough to take Cheney to court, he’ll demand the memos for his defense, and probably get them.

What would Obama do? Raise… or call?

But as a Republican, if he tells the truth, then he must be a racist, bigot, homophobe, and a liar. Moderate Repubs and the Party in general certainly would not wish to speak up, lest they offend someone and lose the mexican, black, jewish, musim etc vote.

We all know Truth is what the mainstream media tells us it is. Now just put some tape over your pie hole and take it.

Which goes to prove the Dems stand for nothing and the Repubs are Dem lights – i.e. they stand for less than nothing.

Too bad Bush kept Mr. C muzzled for 8 years.

I guess I’d still like it all out.
Perhaps that intell saved lives but this cost lives, and its going to cost hella lot more when the really salacious stuff comes out.

This happened in multiple prisons and detention facilities.
It was procedure.

Were Bush and Cheney really such clueless morons that they thought this could be hushed? Someone with a conscious was going to leak this horrorshow.
This is America.
We eat creeps like them for breakfast.
How was Abu Ghraib different from Uncle Saddam’s Rape Room again?

Maj Gen Taguba’s internal inquiry into the abuse at Abu Ghraib, included sworn statements by 13 detainees, which, he said in the report, he found “credible based on the clarity of their statements and supporting evidence provided by other witnesses.”

Among the graphic statements, which were later released under US freedom of information laws, is that of Kasim Mehaddi Hilas in which he says: “I saw [name of a translator] ******* a kid, his age would be about 15 to 18 years. The kid was hurting very bad and they covered all the doors with sheets. Then when I heard screaming I climbed the door because on top it wasn’t covered and I saw [name] who was wearing the military uniform, putting his **** in the little kid’s ***…. and the female soldier was taking pictures.”

And this entirely jives with what Sy Hersh said years ago.

You’re out of control, grrrl. If you think that detainee abuse at Abu Ghraib comes close to what was going on during any hour, every hour, every day in Saddam’s Republic – much of it in Abu Ghraib itself – then you need to climb off the ceiling and crack open a book or two.

The pictures apparently indicate simulated rape and other degrading conduct. Maybe if you get upset enough, you can commit civil disobedience somewhere, spend a few days in prison, and learn a little bit about real life right now in some all-American County Jail. Don’t worry, they’ll probably put you in a cell with the nicer criminals about to be released and therefore on good behavior – but over the course of a couple of days you’ll learn a few things that will last you a lifetime. Trust me!
