Video: O’Reilly apologizes to Hot Air, sort of

posted at 9:36 pm on May 28, 2009 by Allahpundit

Yes, he concedes, the quote last night should have been specifically attributed to a commenter, not to the site itself — but that’s what we get for letting stuff like that be posted, now isn’t it? Do a better job of moderating comments and we won’t have this problem. He’s been making this argument for years, usually when ripping on Kos, without any apparent sense of what kind of comment load blogs with big traffic deal with. Between Ed’s and my 20-25 posts plus the 40 or so Headline items, Hot Air must get, let’s say, 2,700 comments a day. To put that in perspective, if I worked 15 hours a day doing nothing but moderating them, in order to read and rule on each one I’d have to work at a clip of three comments per minute without taking a single break. That is to say, we’d need not one but two full-time moderators to do the job right, the cost of which would bankrupt nearly any blog given the realities of online ad revenue, especially in a recession. Add to that the endless headaches involved in deciding whether a given comment’s over the line and the inevitable haphazard, arbitrary standards we’d end up imposing on readers and it’s simply not worth it. Frequently we’ll get tips alerting us to really nasty stuff, like racist cracks or death threats, which we promptly clean up, but by and large, if other readers are willing to let a comment pass without mention — stupid and/or distasteful though they may find it — we’re willing too. There’s just too much else to do.

InstaGlenn has some wise words about this subject, which you should digest after watching. Oh, and if you’re wondering what was going on over at the Fox Nation website tonight while O’R was busy lecturing us on the Factor, feast your eyes.

What was so “hateful” about the comment? Calling Obama Hussein? That’s his middle name, isn’t it? The left liked to refer to Bush as W.

O’Reilly is always stating how little he knows about the internet, perhaps he should take a little time and study it a bit before he makes idiot COMMENTS!!!

O’Reilly wants to set an agenda, influence “policy”. He doesn’t for the most part because talk radio or internet has beat him to it by the time his show airs. So he jumps on things like “the gay guy vs. the Christian” on “American Idol”.

Marcus on May 28, 2009 at 9:42 PM

So Bill has a problem w/Hussein? Why Hussein? Is Hussein that bad of a name? What about Saddam Hussein? Hussein 57? Barrack Hussein? I guess I’ll sit and say the word Hussein obama self!

exhelodrvr on May 28, 2009 at 9:46 PM

Making people click to see the comments would be a huge improvement… if you don’t want to moderate then you need to distance properly… check out how abovethelaw blog does it…

http://abovethelaw.com/2009/05/non-sequiturs_052809.php

Threaded commenting and voting would help too…

If you wonder why the republicans are going to huffpo it is because there is much more separation of blog post writer to commenter at HuffPo than there is here… who cares if they get creamed…. this site needs redesigned badly…

ninjapirate on May 28, 2009 at 9:47 PM

I’ve said this before, and I’ll say it again. I only watch The Factor now when I know Laura Ingraham is on. Bill O. is losing his marbles. Calling everyone “a good guy” doesn’t cut it with me. He’s gotten too soft.

Oh, yeah. I’m one of the “haters” who uses Hussein’s name, Hussein.

Since when did it become hateful to use someone’s name? I didn’t hear him complain when people referred to President Bush as “W”.

So what’s the problem?

. Add to that the endless headaches involved in deciding whether a given comment’s over the line and the inevitable haphazard, arbitrary standards we’d end up imposing on readers and it’s simply not worth it.

I can help you out with that one. My posts should never be considered ‘over the line’ and should never be removed. You have filters.

I might suggest adding a ‘report comment’ button on each of the comments. That might make it easier to report offensive comments. However, just because it is offensive doesn’t make it worthy of removal.

I’m sure people would rather I keep my opinions to myself. . . but how boring would that be?

He’s making up for the Geraldo dust up. He’s comparing what he does on his website to what MM does on hers. . . what a laugh. Imagine MM comparing her ‘vent’ sketches to some of O’Reilly’s shows. Not the same.

But this is more like ‘frenemies’. BO is happy he got pub. He’s happy he makes people on both sides angry, and he’s happy to publicize it. He gives MM more time, apologizes, and is thankful that MM thought he was important enough to plug. It’s all entertainment.

OK, I agree that all comments should be moderated. If HA takes out all those that fail to show a proper attitude ov reverance for President Whatshisname, I think that 2,700 comments per day would go down to a more manageable number, like maybe 10 or 12. Ov course the hits would drop accordingly, and the ad sales would be in the toilet; but hey O’Reiley and Whatshisname would be happy.

Can we just settle on Whatshisname as the official HA designation for the guy with the funny ears.

MikeA on May 28, 2009 at 10:13 PM

For the thousandth time: Hussein would be his surname–his last name–anyway, had he been brought up in Kenya. Luos normally do not take the last name of their fathers unless there is a western or Islamic element within the family.

And guess what Kenyan Luos would normally call him? Hussein.

I’ll be the first to admit on this blog that I like O’Reilly. He’s far from perfect, though, such as failing to stand up for MM v Geraldo when he had the chance. Still, his show is pretty good, I never miss it. Yes, he’s a dinosaur when it comes to the Interweb thingy (which should drive me nuts, as I’m a tekkie), but nobody’s perfect.

O’Reilly can be insufferable, and he blows some things now and again. But he’s got a pretty big audience, and I like the way periodically mentions the scam going on with Obama, GE, NBC, and MSNBC. His ratings exceed those of the MSNBCers, which drives them nuts.

I haven’t seen tonight’s ACORN interview, but I’m glad that he’s taking an interest in it because I think it gets viewers pissed and gets them on the phone to their members of the Congress, which–I hope–eventually leads to a serious investigation. ACORN is a criminal enterprise.

I hate that BOR took the Boss and HA to task for no reason, but all in all he’s still a big thorn in the side of liberals.

Can I say that you are one smart lady? I’m sure you scare the heck out of the men you know in RL.

ladyingray on May 28, 2009 at 10:29 PM

Well thanks, but the reason why know this has nothing to do with my marbles. It’s because I’m half Luo also.

Fox Nation isn’t O’Reilly’s. If O’Reilly was going to answer for Fox, then he would have had to recognize that Beck had Thomas Sowell on, last night, talking about our fascist government.

I don’t need a pill. This is faux outrage if I’ve ever seen it. O’Reilly should have cited the commenter, because everyone should cite the sources for any quotes, as a matter of common decency, but this “smear” stuff is just over the top. And for Allah to throw his own “smear” (I am so faux outraged) of the eligibility issue (via LGF, even!) is really too much. What was the point of that? Like I said, citing Beck’s calling The Precedent a fascist on Fox News, itself, would have been a more appropriate counter attack for Allah (and I mentioned this point in the original faux outrage thread).

Click on the old LittleGreenFootBalls link at Jihad Watch for an overview of the Robert Spencer/Charles Johnson feud. Click on LGF2.0 for a blog that points out Johnson’s latest lunatic ravings.

Sorry, Allah, I know you’re his friend, but FontanaCon asked.

I know that, but still…you are one smart lady and you tell it like it is.

I like that.

Charles has smeared the Tea Parties by claiming they were being hijacked by Nazis and Ron Paul supporters.

ClericalGal on May 28, 2009 at 10:27 PM

I saw that the other day and couldn’t believe my eyes. I would have commented but he banned me for dinging down one of his topics.

Bill should call Algore if he needs assistance navigating the internet.

Rush was right about O’Reilly. He’s just the Ted Baxter of conservatism.
