Moderate conservative: Gee, maybe I shouldn’t have voted for Obama

posted at 5:24 pm on May 28, 2009 by Allahpundit

Turns out he’s an inexperienced statist liberal. Oh, and evidently the media’s in the tank for him. Who knew?

Admittedly, I was one of the moderate conservatives who was wooed by Obama during his PR campaign to become the country’s next president. Sadly, even though I was still unsure of my vote until the week before the election, I know better now. I truly had no idea he would turn out to be the radical tax and spend liberal he’s revealed. Since the beginning of his presidency, Obama seems more interested in making policies and decisions that grab headlines than those in the best interests of the country. The announcement of his whopping $3 trillion budget, trailing the $800 billion bank bailout, was shocking and yet the media seemed to rally around him. The president wants to do everything at one time, national healthcare, economy, taxes (wealth redistribution), clean energy, infrastructure, education and more. He acts very king-like, expecting Congress to endorse everything he floats their way, but his high octane PR strategy–loaded with smiles and good oratory may be fading…

These recent events, the planned closing of Gitmo and “CIA-gate”, have made the president look very inexperienced and unpolished in his ability to lead the nation and only widened the partisan bickering in Washington. Oh, yeah and Speaker Pelosi’s memory lapse over when and what she knew about waterboarding looks sloppy, as if she’s trying to hide the truth. It doesn’t help the president and certainly doesn’t look like change we can believe in or need.

“A smile and eloquent speech won’t make it all right,” she concludes. Why not? It was good enough to win the presidency. Enjoy this, though, because if you think Buckley, Noonan, Parker or any other “conservative” who was soft on The One during the campaign is going to feed their ego a shinola sandwich over it in print the way this woman has, you’re kidding yourselves. In fact, Buckley’s already written a defense of his vote, the basic logic of which was that Obama’s a disaster but still one cool cat. Sigh.

He acts very king-like, expecting Congress to endorse everything he floats their way,

We hear praise of a power-wielding, arm-twisting President who “gets his program through Congress” by knowing the use of power. Throughout the course of history, there have been many other such wielders of power. There have even been dictators who regularly held plebiscites, in which their dictatorships were approved by an Ivory-soap-like percentage of the electorate. But their countries were not free, nor can any country remain free under such despotic power. Some of the current worship of powerful executives may come from those who admire strength and accomplishment of any sort. Others hail the display of Presidential strength simply because they approve of the result reached by the use of power. This is nothing less than the totalitarian philosophy that the end justifies the means. If ever there was a philosophy of government totally at war with that of the Founding Fathers, it is this one.
- Barry Goldwater

but his high octane PR strategy–loaded with smiles and good oratory may be fading…

Not yet. The engine has to run at speed for a while before it blows.

It’s 1992 all over again. “Whoops, guys, I was wrong about the Democrat.”

Buckley isn’t a conservative; he’s, as far as I can tell, a plain-jane Republican, more in the mold of Bush 41. But he writes exceptionally well, as does Noonan, and I hope they come to their senses. At any rate, I don’t think Noonan, Parker, or Buckley were/are fully conservative, in the fusionist-NR sense.

Well, it looks like Obama has started doing it for us, just as Carter did with his ineptitude. In Obama’s case, he’s taking on so many huge new spending initiatives right off the bat that he seems to be creating a “HOLY $HIT!!!” type of reaction among many moderates (who are, after all, easily frightened by sudden political moves in either direction). Like Crystal here, they’ll have their epiphanies one by one and realize maybe Republicans weren’t so bad after all. We need to welcome them back with open arms. We need them for 2010 and 2012. The loyal base can’t pull off a revolution alone.

The “he” is the President. As in, “Man, turns out I voted for a statist liberal.” You’re not the first, but stop beating up on a perfectly fine sentence.

What we need to do is reunite the social cons, the fiscal cons, and the hawks. That’s all it’ll take to clean up this mess; but we’re going to have to do some print-fights with people like Kathleen Parker to do it.

emailnuevo on May 28, 2009 at 5:43 PM

I do not blame Crystal. I blame Mike Huckabee for Crystal doing what she did. He played a dangerous game in getting McCain the nomination. Otherwise we would have had Mitt Romney and he would have won the election. This Obama mess is a direct result of the game that McCain and Huckabee played in the primaries. Remember that at primary time. With the right candidate, we would not be in this pickle now. McCain only did as good as he did because of Sarah. Otherwise he would be been slammed.

I used to be a moderate conservative until this last election which drove me straight over the edge into contemplating joining the Constitution Party–which I still may do. (I really like Alan Keyes.) I didn’t vote for O because I DO RESEARCH BEFORE I CAST A VOTE! This chick is a columnist???? What are they teaching in journalism schools now? Our nation has been lulled by public schools, colleges, and media into a drunken, self-indulgent, “we-have-people-to-do-that-for-us” stupor, unable to think for themselves. America: please wake up and thoughtfully cast your votes! Just because someone can read a teleprompter with some skill and smile sweetly (or whose election is “historical” in nature) doesn’t mean that they are what they project. Turn off the sound and watch their body language, turn off the tv period and read their voting records (if any), investigate all aquaintances fully (work up “the chain”), figure out who they are then decide if you want that kind of philosophy in power. I wasn’t keen on McCain but he was a little more palatable than the one we have in the White House now. Grow a brain, people!

I expect a few more “moderates” to have their awakenings when the Bush tax cuts expire and they start having to pay Clinton-era rates or higher — a difference of several thousand dollars per year for most in the middle class. For many of these young “moderates,” it will be a new experience since they started earning money during Bush’s terms and have enjoyed the Bush rates their entire adult lives so far. If the recession’s still going full-blast when the tax cuts expire, it will be all the more painful. I do expect a lot of them to come crying back to us then.

These recent events, the planned closing of Gitmo and “CIA-gate”, have made the president look very inexperienced and unpolished in his ability to lead the nation and only widened the partisan bickering in Washington.

He is inexperienced, and was even more so when this dolt voted for him. Instead of trying to figure out why in this time the country might need someone with actual bipartisan credentials and experience running something, anything, she decided to be the fainter in the crowd.

While I have no qualms with liberals who voted for Obama because he represents what they believe, or at least more than McCain did, I have no patience for conservatives who voted for Obama only to have second thoughts later. She still deserves ridicule for her decision, regardless of a mea culpa.

As a foreigner (Brit) I have already noticed a distinct difference in Americans’ attitudes to their CiC. At the time of his election I scoffed at silly girls’ complaints at how their country was hated and Obama would at least set that right; these days I hear a much more mature and nuanced set of views – and this amongst students living in Europe, so amongst those with a propensity to liberitis.

I genuinely believe that the US went through a sort of emotional spasm in electing Obama which it is beginning to regret already.

Today a fellow named Chuck phoned Rush Limbaugh and he confessed to Rush that he was an off-and-on listener to Rush’s program for the past 15 years and did hear Rush warn that Obama would exacerbate race relations, and even so voted for Obama because of the Messiah’s speech on race relations after the revelations about Jeremaiah Wright came out.

This proves two things: that Rush is seldom wrong and that Obama has more power and clout than Rush to change the hearts and minds of America.

By the way like Crystal, Chuck has now seen the error of his ways. I wonder how awful Sarah Palin looks now to them.

I blame it on four factors:

1)The financial meltdown not only tipped the balance to Obama, it caused an onrush of millions of on-the-fence voters to seek out the Messiah’s robe for solace and security.

2)John McCain was a poor candidate who turned off millions of conservatives because of his past record, who either did not vote or voted 3rd party.

3)The MSM completely masking or skimming over Obama’s background and associations and his announced policies during the campaign and failing to link these two concepts together into a ‘birds of a feather flock together’ narrative.

4)Obama’s Messianic appeal and yes the presence of white guilt which Obama exploited perfectly.

My post from the headlines:

Rush had a caller today that said he hated to admit it but he voted for Obama solely because he was black. His reasoning was that Obama convinced him that he could “heal” the racial divide in the country. But he admitted that the man had made the divide worse, amongst the other things he was doing.

Rush asked him if he was a regular listener and the called admitted that while he didn’t listen every day, he was a long-time regular listener. Rush asked the guy if he didn’t believe Rush when he said that Obama would make the racial divide worse? The caller admitted he had heard Rush say that, but that he put his “hope” in Obama.

The caller truly sounded repentant – too little too late for this great country.

I’m sure the transcript will be on Rush’s site later.

Buckley is going to stay on the Obama Express because the mean old libs he has dinner parties with will be merciless otherwise.

I would heartily agree with

The media’s refusal to vet this socialist or to even truthfully report his many gaffes is a key reason Obama now is destroying our way of life.

Moreover, look at the relative spending between Obama and McCain. Dems BOUGHT this presidency. Additionally, he bought it with illegal and foreign contributions, which will never be investigated by this one party government, and will again be ignored by the way-past-in-the-tank (they’re in his drawers!) media.

Meanwhile the Dems have been pouring Millions into ACORN and its ilk, who in turn have been subverting the election process for some time now. When there is a question, just keep recounting until the result comes out our way.

Given Crystal’s credentials, I give her big kudos for guts admitting she was wrong, but very little credence for brains, as the data existed for anyone willing to do any research and analysis prior to the election.

Meanwhile, thanks to her (and others’) fecklessness, this country is so screwed we may never recover.

Mr. Obama spends money like its coming out of his own piggy bank…

Clearly, she still doesn’t get it. Such a drunken spending binge would never happen with his own money.

Screw her and her epiphany.

Did anyone read the comments over there and catch this??

Text of H. J. Res. 5: Proposing an amendment to the Constitution of the United States to repeal the twenty-second…

Knucklehead on May 28, 2009 at 7:35 PM

I don’t know what is lamer – Frum or his New Minority website. If you read the comments, you’ll see that it caters to Democrats and liberal Republicans (like Frum himself).

By continuing to use the phrase “building conservatism that can win again,” Frum demonstrates what an intellectually dishonest person he is.

If you were dumb enough to vote for Obama during the last election…stay with the Democratic Party…but then there was the John (My Good Friends On The Other Side of The Aisle) McAmnesty… Good Grief!

sabbott on May 28, 2009 at 7:42 PM

To me you can divide the Obama voters into 2 very specific categories:

Those who voted for him (all liberals, the moderate conservatives, those who voted against Sarah Palin (even though I think her nomination was the best thing that happened to McCain’s campaign), people who were taking war as a never ending event, et al)

Those who voted against McCain (I would include those who stayed home, those who voted 3rd party, those who believed in the MSM propaganda (the ill informed)).

How are we, the rest of the 58MM who voted for McCain, to ensure that we field the BEST candidate for 2012? The plan should be underway now and the candidate should be identified that represents us in our thinking.

Moderate conservative: Gee, maybe I shouldn’t have voted for Obama

Gee…ya think????

Moderate conservative my aunt Fannie. Stupid cow.

She chose the Anti-Christ, no changing her mind, now she will have to pay the piper…

doriangrey on May 28, 2009 at 7:58 PM

What the hell is a “moderate conservative”? The phrase is an oxymoron. She’s either a moderate or a conservative. Since she was stupid enough to vote for Teh One it’s pretty obvious which.

a drop in the bucket.

homesickamerican on May 28, 2009 at 5:26 PM

Lots of drops though in that bucket spells trouble for Obama.

I quoted this yesterday, but I will again just because it is so perfect. The number one reason for Republicans to vote for Obama according to the Republicans for Obama site;

National Debt
The federal debt matters. We cannot saddle future taxpayers with having to service the debt we create with our irresponsible fiscal policies. Cutting the deficit will additionally decrease interest rates and increase private investment.

So the question is will Obama “only” incur more debt in one year then Bush did in 6 years, or will he be more irresponsible in one year then Bush was in all 8?
