Video: O’Reilly smears Hot Air
posted at 10:22 pm on May 27, 2009 by Allahpundit
Ah, there’s nothing like yanking a comment out of context and using it to smear the entire site, even though neither Ed nor I have ever referred to Obama as “Hussein.” Bonus points to O’R for referring to the comment in question as a “blog posting” even though it’s anything but. And before our lefty commenters ask, yes, I have defended Kos from similar charges.
Exit question: How guilty to hold Carpenter for not objecting more vociferously in Hot Air’s defense?
Update (Ed): I put Bill O’Reilly in the same category as Alan Colmes, when he accused us of being a Birther site, even though we kept criticizing the people pushing it. Bottom line for me: if the O’Reilly Factor can’t figure out the difference between a blog post and a comment, they have no business opining about the Internet at all.

BOR is internet and particularly blog ignorant.
I have used Obama’s middle name here often, as well as at five other blogs. I have also had the (gasp!) audacity to actually question his birth location a few times.
NOTE-To this day, we still haven’t seen an authentic Hawaiian BC with his name on it.
Last time I checked, this was still the US of A, and if my comments are seen as offensive by some, tough sh*t.

Yes! This is drive-by, MSM style reporting.

O’Reilly is not about political discourse, he’s about O’Reilly. One of the many tallies in the Fox News cons column.
P.S. Don’t feed the troll, people.

Do you have a mini-shrine in the back of your closet for AP?
Maybe a lil’ somethin’ somethin’ on top of your dresser for Ed?

What’s wrong mentioning that she is diabetic? Since when was a candidate’s health not considered. I sure remember the leftards going boinkers when Roberts had seizure. And she is not just a diabetic but combined with other factors of her lifestyle she is high risk for heart disease.
Blake on May 27, 2009 at 11:32 PM
D.C. would be okay, actually beautiful, if it wasn’t for all those politicians and their little minions. And although the left likes to paint us as the crazies, when was the last time you heard of a conservative stalking, picketing, keying or punching anyone for opposite political views?
Cindy Munford on May 27, 2009 at 11:33 PM
It’s cheap and dirty pool, Allah. I agree totally.
But, is it now verboten to mention his real middle name? I mean, I thought it was something to celebrate, all diversity and the like?
Techie on May 27, 2009 at 11:33 PM
PS O’Reilly is a blog ignoramus, and not to be taken seriously. Move on.

Haha. That’s a big “but….” If it weren’t for the politicians, lobbyists, interest groups, reporters, et. al., sure DC would be lovely. At the very least, it’s a nice place to visit.
conservative pilgrim on May 27, 2009 at 11:35 PM
You don’t hear about it — cause it doesn’t happen.
The left engages in that sort of physical intimidation all the time. I’ve experienced it first hand. They are like wolves. They operate in packs, and try to push you around. They are sick people, operating under the guise of cooperation and understanding.
I’m dying for the day one actually tries to hit me. They’ll be peeling the guy’s skin off the pavement for weeks.
blatantblue on May 27, 2009 at 11:36 PM
Now you’ve done it. Ed is going to have to apologize 63 times for that.
And stop talking about his BC. If we fight him on that and lose he might win the election … Er, he might win the next election. I guess that’s the line, now.
progressoverpeace on May 27, 2009 at 11:36 PM
IMO, BOH was looking for objectionable comments and found those. What I find objectionable in the reporting was the comment was a comment not a blog entry. THIS is my beef with BOH. Commenters are where the pulse of things might be but to take one comment and call it a blog entry is wrong, is it not?

blatantblue on May 27, 2009 at 11:38 PM
Actually, I have very little problem with the Hussein part. compared to what the left called W, that’s nothing.
However, the comment that the GOP has to block her appointment demonstrates an appalling dearth of understanding of current political reality in the US Senate.
For years, the right bitched and moaned about the Dems using the filibuster to block judicial appointments, as well we should have. Well, even if we had 41 votes in the Senate, a dozen GOPers are not going to back a filibuster. It’s not going to happen. She’s going to be the next SCOTUS Justice, and to pretend there is any alternative is laughable.

Frankly, while I agree with Bill-O on many things, him and his show are one of the most aggressively anti-internet I have ever seen. I’m not sure what happened, but Bill has his hate on for the internet beyond all reasonable levels.
Frankly it’s embarrassing to have a Luddite “Ted Baxter” like Bill-O on our team. While I laud the work he’s done in championing traditional values and the generally conservative outlook of his show, Bill really needs to just get over it when it comes to the fact that the Internet is the modern Wild West that doesn’t always conform to his nice neat traditional view of the way things should be.

To be honest most comment sections in news/politico website get crazy. You could to the comment sections at ABCNews.com or CNN.com right now and probably find some offensive stuff.
terryannonline on May 27, 2009 at 11:50 PM
On top of it, had he been born in Kenya (spare me the birther stuff) ‘Hussein’ would be his surname.

What Bill O’Reilly is trying to do is to silence any reasonable opposition to Sotomayor’s nomination by painting it as “fringe,” “crazy” and “right wing extremist” (with thanks to Janet Napolitano).
Looks like he’s having a scary amount of success, too.

Well, you’d probably have a full-blown phobia about blogs if the only comments you ever read about yourself on them read like they were written by “magnoliafan” from Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.
And if you don’t know what I’m talking about, you’re in BOR’s demographic…
ScottMcC on May 28, 2009 at 12:01 AM
Exactly…that’s why they have that young chippy on there to help him out with his cluelessness. And O’Reilly is an old guy who doesn’t know any better. But don’t you think that any publicity might be better than none? People might visit and decide to stay awhile. Goodnight.
It’s actually pretty nice here. HA is, after a lot of stops and starts, my first sign on, where I go to have my coffee each morning with Captain Ed. I don’t comment a lot, but I really like to read em!
marybel on May 28, 2009 at 12:01 AM
b,
Did I ever send you the riff I did (don’t remember if it was on your blog or another) on how totally stupid it is to think that Obama could have been born in Kenya, just based on the realities of 1960′s geography and economics? If you’re interested, I’ll e-mail it.
notropis on May 28, 2009 at 12:01 AM
I couldn’t believe it when I saw that tonight. It was a cheap shot on O’Reilly’s part in his never ending quest to be fair and balanced.
He went further on his “post-game show” tonight. He said he was surprised that “right-wing blogs got so out of control” over Sotomayor. He said they weren’t as bad as Kos and Huffington, but it was still insults and name calling.
He also said Limbaugh wasn’t doing Repubs any favors by calling Sotomayor a “racist” on the air.
Sometimes the old man is just flat wrong. What you have to keep in mind is that O’Reilly readily admits he doesn’t even know how to get on the Internet. His staff prints out all the crap he bloviates about on the air for him.
He wouldn’t even know how to get to Hot-Air if he had to, but yet he smears the site.
Ridiculous.

They’ll never blog.
But they do vote.
AnninCA on May 28, 2009 at 12:08 AM
It’s a ridiculous comment. (Sorry dogsoldier, but it is.)
The GOP has not a prayer of stopping her appointment. We don’t have the 41 votes in the Senate, and even if we did, Graham, McCain Snowe and Collins aren’t going to filibuster, and given the objections we had to Dems filibustering judicial nominees during the prior administration, they shouldn’t even try.
JohnGalt23 on May 28, 2009 at 12:09 AM
I got tired of O’Reilly’s ridiculous populism vis-a-vis the oil companies. His line on them was a constant “Hey, look how much money THEY made today!!!! That money PROVES that they’re ripping you off!”
Never mind that, um, if the companies didn’t make a profit, they wouldn’t stay in business. Never mind too that the take of the oil companies from every gallon of gasoline sold is actually very small. And never mind that they are the most maligned and castigated industry, when the idiots in Congress and the populists like O’Reilly can’t put a single tank of gas in my car.
The late Tony Snow, God bless him, tried to fix Bill on this issue. “Bill, do you know how markets work?”
O’Reilly is best when he confronts idiot judges and campaigns for social causes like Jessica’s Law.
Maligning “big oil,” and destroying his credibility by overreaching for any “blog” smears on the right to equal Kos?
Not so much.
A correction is definitely in order.
Hawkins1701 on May 28, 2009 at 12:10 AM
Bill O’Reilly has said that he personally does not use the internet. I think the whole segment with Carpenter where they discuss what’s happening on the internet is just ridiculous.
And who gives a whoop if anyone calls BHO “Hussein?” It’s not like anyone’s calling him “Hitler.” Hussein IS his middle name!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree that editorials on HA are fairly reasonable. Even though AP regularly displays blatant hypocrisy (Today’s posting about Arnold is a good example.) he’s never personally supported fringes.
However, the percentage of nutcases among the commenters is astounding. I shudder to think some of them are allowed to go on the street unsupervised. Total lack of brains, brainwashed with idiotic talking points, incapable of even reading the opponent’s post, let alone understand it.
It’s really difficult for an outside observer to differentiate between resident bloggers and commenters. We may have different legal standing with respect to this site. But occasional visitors don’t automatically assign a higher importance to AP’s commentary just because it goes first. It’s a forum. If the owners don’t like the image, they should work on the audience they attract.

Now that’s very lowdown and dirty by O’Reilly. I’m rethinking my fondness for the guy after reading that, just as I rethought my affection for HOTAIR when you started in with the ridiculing of the Barack Obama Birth Circumstance issue.
This is an important and as yet unresolved issue. Anyone who ridicules it is ridiculing our Constitution, in my view.

You may have but send it again.
You remember my heritage–almost identical to Obama’s and we’re born in the same month same year. My mom says that there was no way she could have done that much air travel at 9 month preggo in 1961, for a number of obvious reasons.
Some people think that it is always ‘right now.’
baldilocks on May 28, 2009 at 12:14 AM
Aside from my previous post, that was the other turning point in me watching or paying attention to what O’Reilly has to say.
If it had been me, I would have immediately and unequivocally stated that Geraldo would never be appearing on my program again.

Heh.
I would toss a few from that list, but there’s an even longer list of the real vermin that have crawled out with Harvard diplomas. We are all suffering from a big one, right now (the Law school, of course, but that’s part of the package).
As to dogsoldier’s comment, there was nothing really wrong with it as evidenced by the fact that all O’Reilly could say about it was that “you can’t block his picks” [paraphrased], which just showed that O’Reilly didn’t really understand it, as short as the comment was. But dog was correct, and we do have to block The Precedent’s picks as much as possible. If they get through, they get through, but it shouldn’t be without a huge and bloody fight. The GOP and the right should be fighting every single move of The Precedent’s tooth and nail and without showing any mercy, at all. I believe that it is that serious.
progressoverpeace on May 28, 2009 at 12:27 AM
I quite watching the O’Reilly Factor when I realized his “no spin zone” was actually the “no one else’s spin zone”.
karl_lembke on May 28, 2009 at 12:34 AM
I haven’t watched O’Reilly since he allowed Lanny Davis to bad-mouth Free Republic w/o knowing anything about it…probably a year and a half now. I’d always thought he was right about 90% of the time, then he’d get the other 10% so badly wrong that I wanted to throw things at the TV.
The thing about birthers never should have happened and Hot Air brought that upon itself. Like I said before, if you don’t want to associate yourself with something, you very simply don’t post about it. It really is that easy. Instead, you chose to alienate many of your posters. I never expressed an opinion on it other than to yell at people for being consistently nasty toward each other.
O’Reilly seeks to portray himself as above the fray. That’s sad. Beck and Baier put themselves in the middle of the fray. It’s the only way to learn.
I’m not here very much anymore because I don’t like whining. I like passion. I still network links from here if they have value in the fight against the left, but as long as AP chooses to push the meme that our side can’t get it together, I have little use for it. I am not into infighting. I am into fighting big government, Islamic supremacism, and judicial activism.
Connie on May 28, 2009 at 12:34 AM
(Do you suppose O’Reilley will have the — er — anatomy to feature that last “blog post”?)
karl_lembke on May 28, 2009 at 12:35 AM
BOR is not that smart. His main objective on his show is to be seen as so unpartisan and fair that he is loved by everyone as a “moderate”. Problem is, in pursuing that image, he has no real convictions (except for the totally obviously uncontestable things, like child rape), that he comes off as a gutless wimp with no guts to take a position on a controversial subject. He is a parody of the current GOP! He will talk about the left being so vicious as in the case of Miss Prejean, which was some of the most over the top hate and viciousness I’ve ever seen, and compare it to some conservative who said something bad about a liberal woman once. The difference of scale never seems to sink in on him. But he doesn’t want to hear that anyway. Anything that would put the evil left in a negative light is always softened up and he uses the most insignificant offense of the right to pretend that both sides are the same. I don’t care for the man, he is a moral coward.
Bikerken on May 28, 2009 at 12:38 AM
This is just silly. He didn’t smear the website, and it was a posting on a blog. Comments are posts. He never smeared the site, he never said it was a hate site, he was specifically talking to Carpenter about comments on the sites, and he posted a comment on the site that, I would assume, actually appeared here on the site.
That’s as far as he went, so I don’t see what the complaint is.
He reported that a comment was posted to a blog that actually appeared- that seems merely like factual reporting, not a smear.
TheBlueSite on May 28, 2009 at 12:39 AM
Another thing that drives me nuts about BOR, he runs this b-roll of half naked women all the time and decries the fact that they are doing it! What a hypocrite! And by the way, that dumb broad that does the “body language” segment, she looks like she’s really ‘Wifey’. Google it, tell me I’m wrong!
Bikerken on May 28, 2009 at 12:41 AM
Another point- he didn’t even go on an attack on the comment at the site here…he just reported it and said the person must be crazy to think the pick will be blocked and moved on.
For that he gets attacked by hundreds of people who suddenly agree they hate him…for having the audacity to factually report a fact. Sort of bolsters his point about blog comments!
TheBlueSite on May 28, 2009 at 12:44 AM
I think you might have a point. O’Reilly flat out called Daily Kos a “hate site” but no such thing with HotAir.
