Video: O’Reilly smears Hot Air
posted at 10:22 pm on May 27, 2009 by Allahpundit
Ah, there’s nothing like yanking a comment out of context and using it to smear the entire site, even though neither Ed nor I have ever referred to Obama as “Hussein.” Bonus points to O’R for referring to the comment in question as a “blog posting” even though it’s anything but. And before our lefty commenters ask, yes, I have defended Kos from similar charges.
Exit question: How guilty to hold Carpenter for not objecting more vociferously in Hot Air’s defense?
Update (Ed): I put Bill O’Reilly in the same category as Alan Colmes, when he accused us of being a Birther site, even though we kept criticizing the people pushing it. Bottom line for me: if the O’Reilly Factor can’t figure out the difference between a blog post and a comment, they have no business opining about the Internet at all.

Blowback

Only works if AP can do it over the phone.
He can’t reveal his true identity as a feline.
blatantblue on May 27, 2009 at 10:54 PM
Bill O’Reilly doesn’t care much about anything unless it involves selling his books, reading letters about his books, quoting from his books or going after anyone in the media who talks badly about him. Now if some anonymous poster commented about Bill, he would have done his research.
sherry on May 27, 2009 at 10:54 PM
Is this surprising? He didn’t defend Michelle against Geraldo.
SouthernGent on May 27, 2009 at 10:55 PM
Damn, wasn’t me!
Anyway, ACarp really should be on top of Bill for pulling out “comments” and attaching them to the Bloggers. If the debate is about the incivility of righties or lefties in general, he needs to do a study on the average tone of commenters on lefty blogs compared to righty blogs. Here we get a handful, here and there, that may be “over the top”, where as there are pages and pages of hateful comments on HuffPo/Kos at any given point. But O’Reilly really should be comparing blogger to blogger, not commenter to commenter and he’d see there is very little on the right that compares to hate/smears/racism/personal attacks that we see from lefty bloggers.

We need one of Ed’s Hot Air polls on this one.
Is Bill O’Reilly:
A. a Jerk
B. a Pinhead
C. a total Tool
D. Ted Baxter
E. All of the Above
I’m goin’ with E.

Mindy Carpenter as “internet cop” for a rightwing blogs is as laughable as Jeff Gannon “policing” the Bush White House.
benny shakar on May 27, 2009 at 10:55 PM
That’s not the point. O’Reilly called it a “blog posting,” and that’s just not true. It’s lazy, incompetent journalism, at best.

I just don’t like how he called it a
“HotAir.com blog post”
Wtf man, get your sh*t straight.
I don’t go around saying, “A Steven Spielberg Joint.”
It’s a “Spike Lee Joint.”
It’s a “Hot Air Comment”
not a “HotAir blog post”

I’m trying to think of the last time I cared what O’Reilly thought. It evades me. Well, if life was fair his would be the Dennis Miller show. He is far more interesting.

Boy you got that right!
Some of the best smackdowns I’ve seen on TV has come from Cavuto beating the crap out of BOR on economic issues.
He pummeled him last summer over the high prices of gas and the causes. BOR looked like a fool.

Has anybody else here heard talk of the start of The Freedom Party? Beck was discussing on his radio show today. Possibilities, possibilities…
All I know is I can’t call myself Republican anymore. Makes me want to vomit to be associated with the Flubbanator, McVain, and Snowjob/Collins.
ErinF on May 27, 2009 at 10:57 PM
Isn’t that the truth. He only started painting talk radio as right wing whackos after he lost his radio show. Before that, it was a valuable resource.

I’ve been talking about what an arrogant, belligerent, squishy, windbag of a populist, Morton Downey ripoff O’Reilly is for years.
Silly me. Obviously the guy continues his stunning coverage of the internet in the same sensible fashion that Fox News regularly covers video game and rock music controversies.
MadisonConservative on May 27, 2009 at 10:59 PM
Okay, lay off Carpenter. You don’t know her side of things. Sometimes people are just off their game. It happens. They don’t feel well, they are tired, or they just miss something.

Sorry Allah and Ed. I’ve been a lurker here for about a year and a commenter since Feb. I think you guys run a classy site. BOR is a pompous a** that has no idea what he’s talking about.
He also slammed Freep pretty bad. Why? Freep is pretty classy as well.
BTW, Bill Cunningham uses TOTUS’s full name all the time. What’s wrong with that? It’s his name!!! I remember during the campaign when Cunningham was doing a warm up for a McCain rally in Ohio, he used TOTUS’s middle name and McCain came out later and ripped him for it. Sheeesh, tools like McCain and BOR need to get over it.

I still can’t figure out what anyone thought was so bad about the HotAir comment that O’Reilly read. And I don’t get Allah’s problem with the “Hussein”, as O’Reilly didn’t make anything of that, himself.
A guy calling himself Allah doesn’t like to use someone’s actual name of Hussein …

SouthernGent on May 27, 2009 at 11:06 PM
I don’t get what the big fuss is all about, meaning either Amanda Carpenter and Bill O’Reilly using it or Ed, Michelle and AP having a cow that it was used.
The only thing “dogsoldier” said that was even slightly troubling was “militant.”
Is the implication that Right Wingers are “militant” because the poster called her “militant?”
To the extent that Sotomayor uses her job for Leftist political/judicial activism, she is a militant.
(Will I get in trouble for saying that?)

ddrintn on May 27, 2009 at 11:07 PM
Michelle stopped going on “The Factor” when Geraldo “Here is where our troops are going to attack” Rivera said he’d like to spit on her… and Mr Classy B.O. refused to stick up for her… never mind Geraldo is a hack. It’s also when I stopped watching his show and started watching Glen Beck. Billy O too often confuses being “LOUD” with being “RIGHT”. I got sick of screaming at the TV “Why don’t you ask him/her X, Y, or Z instead of yelling over them that they are wrong”. There are other talk show hosts who pose a much better intellectual argument of conservative principals than Billy O (Prager for example). Michelle was right to shun him.

davek70 on May 27, 2009 at 11:10 PM
I thought the same thing. BUT can they not tell the difference between a post and a comment? Apparently not. Reveals more about the incompetency and the “drive-by” research from O’Reilly and his staff.
Since when did AC become the only go-to person for the Internet? Yeah, I think it’s reprehensible that she didn’t say anything and correct him. If she’s such an Internet braniac, she would’ve immediately corrected him especially since she has worked with Ed! Sheesh.
AP, second look at Limbaugh??? He’s been very good in promoting HA as a credible source of information. He even gave a mention of a HA post last week when Ed was on vacation!
conservative pilgrim on May 27, 2009 at 11:10 PM
You know why he picked that comment… it was “pithy.”
But yeah, O’Reilly got too uneven and bombastic for me a couple years ago.

Bill OReilly only mocks Hotair.com because he’s scared of us.
e-pirate on May 27, 2009 at 11:10 PM
Eh, it’s too hard to tell. It’s such a fast-paced environment, O’Reilly’s such a blowhard, and she probably wasn’t expecting to hear anything unfair. Anyone could be caught off-balance.
Still, you’d hope from the mere sound of the comment that it would be obvious to anyone who pays cursory attention that it’s not the way you or Ed posts, but maybe Amanda doesn’t actually read Hot Air…
Ouch, if that’s the case.
Kensington on May 27, 2009 at 11:10 PM

We all love HA and it’s a great blog, but BO’R and A.C. are reaching pretty far afield to call *a* single comment here the “mainstream” Conservative/GOP response to Sonia’s nomination.
Even so, “dogsoldier” wasn’t so far wrong about why she isn’t confirmation worthy.
Jenfidel on May 27, 2009 at 11:11 PM

I’m watching it now and the segment hasn’t come on yet, so I can’t make a judgement but BOR is a bit of an idiot. He rides that crazy independent line of his so hard and fast that it makes him difficult to follow. There is no question though that blogs and the internet are not his area of expertise and taking him seriously there is nuts.
ORconservative on May 27, 2009 at 11:14 PM
According to O’R, you obviously don’t live in America.
Though that was a nasty swipe at anyone he disagrees with, basically labeling others as ‘anti-American’, I think what O’R meant was: Sprechen se Deutsches?

I don’t.
This is the nature of the beast. The internet lets people do so many things they wouldn’t do in public, or in person privately.
Be it Pop Sugar, Perez, HA, HuffPo, WaPo, NYPost, or any other place that allows comments, there is a certain percentage that will say ridiculous things.
But this is not only the nature of the intertubaz, but the nature of man himself! Ahhh
If he wears no mask, he reserves himself. But if he places one on his face, he’ll do so many things he wouldn’t otherwise.

If you’re referring to O’Reilly saying it was a blogger. Watch the clip, it says “HotAir.com blog posting.” (my emphasis)
The comments are always interesting and diverse here, but I like it that way–makes me think, keeps me on my toes, and forces me to examine my beliefs & positions. I could, however, do without some of the trolls. For now, we are still free to engage and dialogue.
conservative pilgrim on May 27, 2009 at 11:18 PM
O’Reilly thinks it’s unfair for anyone to make ANY point that isn’t his, even out in the vast infosphere that is 99.999999999999999999999999999999% not his program(s).
So he may never see a compelling reason to distinguish between a site’s official bloggers and the comments of readers. After all, why are you guys even out here making points that are not O’Reilly’s points?

AnninCA on May 27, 2009 at 11:24 PM
OK, with perhaps a different perspective, I have wondered about SOME of the posts on Conservative sites, where I think they are either far-right extremists or leftists in disguise, hoping to get the rest of the world to wag their fingers in disgust at Conservatives, by their outrages posts. Let this be our lesson that we are not the only ones that read our blog and be as critical as necessary without looking like a bigot or a loon. The left does the same thing on their blogs and they are not held accountable for it, but we are. Not fair? Absolutely….!

So many ways I can deliciously twist this!
blatantblue on May 27, 2009 at 11:25 PM
You tell him, Ed! It’s a very interesting angle to pull anonymous blog comments to criticize the entire site. I’m surprised the left doesn’t do this more. Since it would cause respected Republican sites such fear of being labeled racist or extremist that comments and blog posts would be censored to the point only mild, politically correct criticism would be tolerated. Causing conservative sites to police content to the point of rendering themselves ineffectual.
