Gibbs warns: Be “exceedingly careful” in how you criticize Sotomayor

Frum calls it his Ari Fleischer “watch what you say” moment.

Question: why? Why be more careful with this nomination than with those of Miguel Estrada or Robert Bork – never mind Clarence Thomas? On what basis does Gibbs single out this nomination as more sensitive than others, this debate as demanding more care than other debates?

He’s asking rhetorically, of course. On its own terms, Gibbs’s advice isn’t bad — Michael Steele, doubtless concerned about hemorrhaging any more Latino votes, made the same point yesterday — but it’s one thing for the head of the RNC to nudge his fellow Republicans and another for the White House to be warning the opposition. Imagine the nutroots pathos had a Republican press secretary dropped this on them. As it is, no doubt Team Barry’s prepping another round of attacks from the Rush/Newt/Cheney-bashing playbook for tomorrow in response to Gingrich’s latest offering. I love easy content. It’s been half a century since West Side Story. Any cultural assimilation beyond the point characterized in the musical? NYC is so neighborhood territorial. Is “ethnic” neighborhood the PC reference for gangland? Is Sotomayor chums with the Obamas, members of the huge chip on the shoulder society? Those chips have been sharpened to be flung as lethal weapons.

I was stuck there for hours, copying maps. You had to wait in line to fax. Abilene has few amenities and only one Kinko’s. That’s why Bill Burkett drove thirty miles from Baird to get there.
Kinko’s just moved up the street a couple of years ago, and I told them that they needed a State Historic marker or plaque on the old building.

To defend the constitution is to defend all the other Americans of every color, race and faith or no faith at all!
To question or criticize this one woman for her Marxist and idiotic views is to protect and respect the freedom and rights of all the other Hispanic women, men, children as well as every other nationality that resides in our nation! The obama administration needs to take their own medicine and be exceedingly careful how they criticize AIG employees, Rush, Carrie Prejan, Pres. Bush, Fox News, Chrysler bondholders…

If President TelePrompter is exceedingly confident in his nominee, why demand she not be criticized? It doesn’t pass the smell test. One might think Axlerod & Rahm did not properly vett Sotomayer…

Bite me! I’ll say whatever I feel I have to say about the racist being nominated for SCOTUS. If you think your political play will stop any criticism of your hack lawyer, think again. First, her “story” is no more “special” than that of millions of other Americans who pulled themselves up from the dregs of their childhood, so stifle the gooey “life story” crap.
I want proof of her constitutional smarts and her promise to abide by that document! No “empathy” is required.

But Gibbs didnt suggest being “more” careful than for other nominations. He just said to be careful.

It was a goofy thing to say, but that’s no need for Frum to make it sound goofier than it was.
