Cheney: “We’re happy to have Gen. Powell in the Republican Party”

Relax. The climbdown is tempered with plenty of language about sticking to principles. I’m giving you two clips: The Powell bit is in the first but the second, which deals with unintended consequences of Bush’s TARP bailout, is more interesting, insofar as Cheney admits (around 8:00) that he never imagined Congress would abuse its authority under the financial rescue package to seize control of private industry. That’s an uncharacteristically naive move on his part, but on my part too: I thought there was enough congressional oversight to TARP that they’d be able to rein it in. So much for that.

Wow and there is a poll included with this article.

One, Cheney didn’t kick Powell out, so why apologize? It was another one of those leftard misrepresenting what was said.
Two, I’m not happy with Powell in the republican party with his false sense of entitlement.
Get out, Powell! Take your backstabbing, lying a$$ out of here!

Allah,
Really? I never thought anything of the kind. Who did you think was going to rein in the TARP specifically?
Dr Evil on May 27, 2009 at 9:21 PM
Well, if Pelosi/Reid hadn’t been involved in it I might have fallen for that too. I did kinda fall for the One’s line about reducing pork barrel spending. I thought as much as he griped about that during his campaign there was NO WAY he’d let those two get away with padding that thing with pork and renege on the “line by line” promise. Riiiiiight.
scalleywag on May 27, 2009 at 9:22 PM
I just voted on it and behold…. Powell’s in the lead.

I love how the leftards think it is okay for that tool Powell to lead the republican party even though he votes for democrats. Applying their logic, Cheney is the natural head of the Democrat party. Idiots.

I knew in my gut that TARP was wrong the minute they started bringing it up and I don’t even know why.

Real conservative bloggers would come up with a poll satirizing the Daily News one. But, of course, there are no real conservative bloggers, just RINOS, who show as much disdain for conservatives as Powell…

Uh-oh. Allahpundit swore:

Stoking the fires of hatred within the GOP any way you can, aren’t you? What the f**k is your agenda here that you constantly keep the real republicans at odds with the quasi-GOP epitomized by Powell, McCain, and Specter before he bolted to bluer pastures. In short you miserable cur, why are you using your position to destroy the GOP and replace it with another version of the Democrats?
Answer if you dare but you have proven time and again you are good at putting crap out but never bother defending it. You, like Specter, McCain, and Powell are a Democrat at heart.

LOL…maybe Allahpundit will rethink that high road.

That’s B.S., and you’re right, AP. Cheney knew. I think he’s more surprised with the extent of the corruption and the lack of outrage and opposition by the congressional GOP. And it’s that latter part that would explain why Cheney feels duty bound to mount some sort of vocal opposition. Because there’s little to no opposition by my former party. Keep hitting Cheney. And frickin’ hit hard.
Weight of Glory on May 27, 2009 at 9:40 PM
AP, by missing a stroke of the keyboard, you’ve managed to get a few more comments… That was your plan all along, right? /s

Hmm. From whence all the vitriol?
AP sure knows how to push buttons.

You were more than naive, Allah. I remember posts on HotAir like “why do so many of you want the economy to fail?” Well… I knew there were problems with the economy that no government bailout would fix and here we are $2 trillion later. However, I think the bond market is about to bring fiscal conservatism back into style. Forcibly.

FGS. Cheney said the original quip with a smile. Of course he never wished Powell out of the Party. Sorry, but he didn’t.
KittyLowrey on May 27, 2009 at 9:47 PM
Secretary Powell is welcome in the Republican Party I support. He’s all over the map on political issues, but he has served the nation as well as he could over many years.
Just once though, it might be nice if he took assertive
and thoughtful exception to some…any…Obama policies, in support of stated Republican Party alternatives.

So I can go next door and bang my neighbors wife then come home and say my wife needs to change. My clothes would be on the sidewalk in flames and I would be dodging 223 rounds. So, why is Powell still hanging around?

LOL. O’Reilly didn’t even care about the “Hussein” part. He was making hay about the idea of “blocking picks”. Bill O said something stupid about ‘Don’t they know that they can’t block his picks’ – showing that O’Reilly had no idea what he was talking about. He ruminated that it was a foreigner writing the comment who didn’t understand America. I was laughing my arse off.
progressoverpeace on May 27, 2009 at 9:49 PM
Dick Cheney and Rush Limbaugh are speaking far more sense than the filthy liar’s party and bastards like Allah or Powell. It is time to take the GOP back from the McCain wing of the party. They no longer (if they ever did) speak for the vast majority of those of us who call themselves Republicans. As for bastards like Allah- Those in a position to actually meet him have nothing but good things to say about him on this blog so he must have a pleasant personality that doesn’t come out in the pixels. Sorta the way Hilter was admired for his soft spot for children and puppies.

I sometimes find myself wishing what might have been with Cheney / Bush.
It’s so much more compelling because you know that Cheney often times wanted to come out swinging during the Bush years, but he didn’t.
The guy at least doesn’t make you giggle and occasionally facepalm when he’s giving speeches like W did. He’s probably the most responsible voice in the cacophony of GOP crapola right now.

Meh. There was nothing wrong with the comment and most people won’t have any problem with it. It’s a shame, though, because there are so many better comments that should have been featured. But it was short and to the point.
progressoverpeace on May 27, 2009 at 9:56 PM
Gimme a break.
This is the way it works. Boss takes the heat. Powell wasn’t the boss. Mr Cheney is being chivalrous to Mr Powell. It doesn’t matter that Mr Powell could care less.
Mr Cheney isn’t towing anyone’s line. He is just pointing to the door that hit Powell in the ass on his way out.
Limerick on May 27, 2009 at 9:57 PM
We are not, or most of us are not, in the military. We don’t need a general. He’s been thanked ad nauseum for his service. As a conservative Powell sucks. He also is unethical as far as I’m concerned. Why on earth would you want him to have any say in the republican party? That’s what he wants — to formulate policy.
The guy has shown his true colors numerous times. Why on earth would you think he will act any differently in the future?
Blake on May 27, 2009 at 9:58 PM

Around 6:00 in the first clip I heard Cheney talking about the risk of proliferation in Asia and mentioned Japan and Taiwan. Hadn’t really thought about that myself, but that ought to get China’s attention if it’s actually a possibility. Hmm.
Wouldn’t expect this admin to do anything like pointing this possibility out to China to encourage their involvement, but might be nice if they would.

d1carter on May 27, 2009 at 10:15 PM
Powell’s republican party is not my republican party. I’m not sure that he even knows where his allegiance is. I think at this point in his life he has nothing to lose and that allows him say whatever he really feels. He voted for and suppoted Obama.
He is not a conservative by any stretch of the imagination and if he thinks he is still a republican he can join the newly baptised democrat Spector as a loser in any election he may aspire to.

Well Jesus Christ said that the generation that saw the dead fig tree put forth green leaves again (Israel become a nation again) would not pass before he returned. Israel became a nation again in 1948, not many years left before those alive when that happened shuffle off this mortal coil. Either Jesus Christ was wrong and Christianity is all a shame, or, the end genuinely is finally here.
