Hmmm: Chrysler dealers shut down in Obama bankruptcy are mostly Republican?

posted at 9:46 pm on May 26, 2009 by Allahpundit

I’m skeptical that this is as bad as it looks — it’d be politically suicidal, for no benefit greater than petty revenge — but consider it your must-read of the day. Don’t stop before the updates either or you’ll miss profitable dealers scratching their heads trying to figure out what mysterious sin they could have committed to warrant termination.

To quickly review the situation, I took all dealer owners whose names appeared more than once in the list. And, of those who contributed to political campaigns, every single one had donated almost exclusively to GOP candidates. While this isn’t an exhaustive review, it does have some ominous implications if it can be verified.

However, I also found additional research online at Scribd (author unknown), which also appears to point to a highly partisan decision-making process.

Could be that dealers, being entrepreneurs, trend heavily Republican anyway. Without some kind of control sample, there’s no way to judge if this is corrupt or just representative. Like Ross says, further research is required. Anyone think the media’s game?

But wait, you say, didn’t Chrysler decide to shut down the dealerships, not the feds? Well, funny thing about that. Via Reliapundit, Reuters gets an earful from the dealers’ lawyer:

Lawyer Leonard Bellavia, of Bellavia Gentile & Associates, who represents some of the terminated dealers, said he deposed Chrysler President Jim Press on Tuesday and came away with the impression that Press did not support the plan.

“It became clear to us that Chrysler does not see the wisdom of terminating 25 percent of its dealers,” Bellavia said. “It really wasn’t Chrysler’s decision. They are under enormous pressure from the President’s automotive task force.”

He added the government task force, which he criticized for having no members with retail experience was, in effect, attacking U.S. entrepreneurs…

“I think it’s unconstitutional,” said Jim Anderer, owner of Island Jeep in Lindenhurst, New York.

“The Fifth Amendment clearly states you cannot take another person’s property without due process or compensation. Even in eminent domain, there is an appraised price on the property being taken by the state.”

I don’t know. To believe this is true, you’d have to believe Obama applied some awfully heavy-handed pressure to get his way. And really, what are the odds of that?

Just a reminder. The stopped all car production a month ago. The non cancelled dealers can’t order cars for production. chrysler laid off 30,0000 workers and snake oil salesman #1 said he saved the jobs.
I posted in my local paper that the cancelled dealer may be better off. He can tell Chrysler what to do with the cars in inventory that are on floorplan. I don’t know how many dealer inventory cars are financed, but that is Obama’s problem. Usually when a dealer in any industry is cancelled, the factory picks up inventory that is still not paid for. chrysler had lower interest rates for the dealer than local banks. Cleveland Plain dealer has some true stories for coverage.

What if 95% of car dealers give to republicans as a rule?

For example, what if the claim were that 95% of dealerships being closed had fire detectors in the main office. Would this be considered an anomaly?

I have to agree and if the affected dealers sue for due process, they will be standing inline with those asking him to prove he is eliagebel to be president; facing the same road blocks.

These people are as stupid as they look. What goes around come around.

izoneguy on May 26, 2009 at 10:24 PM

They are counting on taking everything down with them. They are well on track to doing so, too. This is the real intent of The Precedent’s Scorched Earth governing policy, which will leave nothing of the US but a burning husk.

progressoverpeace on May 26, 2009 at 10:27 PM

I think it’s more important to focus on the fact that Obama’s task force is shutting down those dealerships that are successful. You can’t remake what’s not broken. You can’t be the savior if people don’t need saving. You have to destroy before you can remake. Success under the “old” rules must stop, so that the “new” idea of success can take it’s place.

I agree. And arrogance is the shortcut that leads the WH directly to making stupid decisions.

Excuse mem there’s a couple of guy’s from ACORN here to see you.

I’m skeptical that this is as bad as it looks — it’d be politically suicidal

How’s that?

artist on May 26, 2009 at 9:49 PM

I agree. Even if it’s true I just don’t see it happening that way, AP. The MSM will either ignore the issue entirely or otherwise mock it, leaving it to talk radio and Republican blogs, and half the Republicans will criticize the other half for even mentioning it because the MSM will use it to tarnish all Republicans as extremists.

Related, what about the Indiana state pension funds that got screwed over in the Chrysler bk? Is that a done deal, and will Indiana keep raising a stink about it?

As Indiana’s treasurer said, Michigan and California also lost pension money when the UAW was moved ahead of them, but guess what? MI and CA are too beholden to Obama to complain about it.

This is pretty scary, these businesses and even states who’re too cowed to stand up to the Chicago Way.

I KNEW IT!!

I wondered about this a week ago. This has Chicago written all over it!
