It is indeed. (tsar) It’s a derivative of Caesar and usually means a supreme ruler in the same sense that Caesar saw himself as a rule (from God).

I always wonder why they use this term for anything.

While discussing possible bailouts (and therefore defacto nationalization) of newspapers last week a friend of mine made the comment “even if they control the news, they can’t control the internet.” At the time I told my friend that all they need to control are a handful of nodes. That’s how China can restrict a network as large as theirs. It ain’t easy, but neither is it as hard as you might think.

Normally I’m not paranoid, but if this happens only talk radio and an adoring MSM will stand between our current republic and a future dictatorship.

Someone needs to bring a lawsuit to strike Section 14.

There are technical reasons that access to private networks is needed to improve security for the internet. With judicial oversight, the potential for abuse is reduced.

This is disturbing. Using back channels instead of the normal bureaucracy short circuits some important controls.
It can be very dangerous.

The Kennedy and Johnson administrations both used Gen Maxwell Taylor for their back channel in Vietnam and it reaulted in both State and the Joint Chiefs being cut out of the loop. Taylor’s cables would take precedence over those of people who had much more experience in the area.

The last President we had that knew how to use the organization was Eisenhower. But because he did it so well he was accused of doing nothing. It was just that he knew how to use his staff.

I think they should be termed “Führers” instead of “Czars” because that would make the power and danger of the position more understandable to the general public.

Would anyone support an Internet Führer?
