Kim tests another nuke

John Bolton called it earlier this week, and Kim Jong-Il proved him right.  This time, the North Koreans got their money’s worth out of a nuclear test, setting off a device that produced a yield similar to that of the Hiroshima blast in 1945:

North Korea on Monday appeared to have detonated a nuclear device, its second such test in three years.

The U.S. Geological Survey said it detected a magnitude-4.7 earthquake in the region, and South Korea’s Cabinet convened in an emergency session, according to Yonhap, South Korea’s semi-official newswire.

Yonhap also said the North had confirmed the test.

Combined with the previous failure, the North Koreans have enough data to gain important technical improvements in their design.  The Washington Times notes that the first failure practically guaranteed another test, regardless of the state of relations between Pyongyang, Washington, and the rest of the six-party members.  The failure almost certainly threatened the lives of the people in the program, mainly for the embarrassment it showered on Dear Leader.  Now they have proven their design upgrades, which means that Pyongyang can proceed on a path of arming itself — and enriching itself by proliferating the designs and the weapons to others.

How many bombs does Kim still have?  Experts predicted that Kim only had enough plutonium for six to eight weapons before shuttering the Yongbyon reactor that produced it.  After two tests, Kim has to be running low on bombs — or perhaps just plutonium devices.  The six-party talks tried getting Kim to admit to working in parallel on highly-enriched uranium weapons, the same kind of bombs Iran is pursuing.

Barack Obama issued a cautious reaction, one that Kim will find much to his liking:

Today, North Korea said that it has conducted a nuclear test in violation of international law. It appears to also have attempted a short range missile launch. These actions, while not a surprise given its statements and actions to date, are a matter of grave concern to all nations. North Korea’s attempts to develop nuclear weapons, as well as its ballistic missile program, constitute a threat to international peace and security.

By acting in blatant defiance of the United Nations Security Council, North Korea is directly and recklessly challenging the international community. North Korea’s behavior increases tensions and undermines stability in Northeast Asia. Such provocations will only serve to deepen North Korea’s isolation. It will not find international acceptance unless it abandons its pursuit of weapons of mass destruction and their means of delivery.

The danger posed by North Korea’s threatening activities warrants action by the international community. We have been and will continue working with our allies and partners in the Six-Party Talks as well as other members of the U.N. Security Council in the days ahead.

“Warrants action”?  Well, I’d guess that Obama wants another strongly-worded memo from the UN Security Council.  After the last missile launch, China and Russia refused to agree to even that much until a lot of arm-twisting produced … a weakly-worded memo.  We now have had three administrations pursue negotiations through the UN and through regional talks, mostly consisting of showering Kim with money, food, and fuel, and getting almost nothing concrete in return.  Even Yongbyon’s destruction, one of the few tangible results of the diplomacy, is in the process of being reversed.

We’ll see if Obama offers anything more emphatic in dealing with Pyongyang.  Thus far, Kim seems remarkably unimpressed with the new American President, as do the Iranians.  But hey, they’re just tiny countries compared to the old Soviet Union, so they’re not a threat … right?

Slick Willie and Madelin Notbright were instrumental in giving nuclear energy to North Korea (Kim promised) to use for peaceful purposes. They did not know Lil Kim had his fingers crossed. These memo thingies… they are something that we can weave together and huddle under to protect us from nuclear blast or do they just protect from nuclear fallout?

It’s grossly unfair – and inaccurate – to lay this failure at Obama’s feet.

This is the result of Bush’s approach to North Korea based largely on the fundamental belief that Kim could be trusted. Bolton told us (well, them) otherwise.

Yeah, the real culprit here is China since they could pull the plug on Pyongyang whenever they want.

The big question that no one seems to want to address is the amount of cooperation between North Korea and Iran. Iran claims to have thousands of centrifuges in operation. It claims to have an advanced missile in development. It DOES NOT claim that all of this is in Iran.

There is every reason to believe, based upon eyewitness reports of Iranian scientists in North Korea, and North Koreans, in Iran, that both countries are working together to develop and deploy nuclear weapons.

Add to that the Israeli destruction of a nuclear facility in Syria, and you have a dangerous state of cooperation between multiple nations, all allied against the west and willing to undertake whatever actions they deem best to further their own interests, regardless of the consequences to themselves or their nations.

Our politicians keep acting as if North Korea, Iran, and Syria, (at the least) are all independent players. I contend that they are not, and our failure to realize the confederate nature of their efforts will result in a far worse situation than what we currently envision.

China has been happy to let Kim shag the leg of the US on this issue, because it kept us busy. They may change their minds, though, when Japan goes nuclear because it *finally* gets the message that Obambi won’t lift a finger to honor US commitments to Japan in the region…

China keeps NK on a short leash. China uses NK to test the waters.
China has a vast impact on our own economy. China is the biggest cheerleader of cap & trade. China is probing for American weakness and
a nuclear test is just one more probe that China uses. I think it is no coincidence that North Korea set-off a nuke test while Pelosi is visiting China.
Let’s see how the CIA briefing goes with Madam Speaker upon her return.

Your post only makes sense if you assume that Obama is incompetent and that his dismantling of America is the result of stupidity. I don’t think he is that stupid, and thus I have to think his dismantling of America is exactly what he wants to do. Either way, we’re screwed. Unless something happens to cause enough Americans to wake up and see that this administration is a threat to their very existence, I don’t see how we can survive until even the next election; if indeed the left would even allow a next election.

Despite Kim Jong Il’s explicit threats of another nuclear test, U.S. Special Envoy Stephen Bosworth said last week that the Obama administration is “relatively relaxed” and that “there is not a sense of crisis.” They’re certainly smiling in Pyongyang.

Imo, Kim wants money and security to remain head of his crime family, and pass it on. How would he gain any of that by nuking anyone? My guess is he is more interested in selling this technology than ever using it himself.

So I wonder how much of a direct threat Kim poses to S. Korea or Japan. He’s much more of a threat to us imo, because he sells to other countries we are also in confrontation with. Isn’t this the main reason Russia and China et. al. support him, aside from the fact that neither want his refugees?

Well,

The big question that no one seems to want to address is the amount of cooperation between North Korea and Iran. Iran claims to have thousands of centrifuges in operation. It claims to have an advanced missile in development. It DOES NOT claim that all of this is in Iran.

There is every reason to believe, based upon eyewitness reports of Iranian scientists in North Korea, and North Koreans, in Iran, that both countries are working together to develop and deploy nuclear weapons.

Add to that the Israeli destruction of a nuclear facility in Syria, and you have a dangerous state of cooperation between multiple nations, all allied against the west and willing to undertake whatever actions they deem best to further their own interests, regardless of the consequences to themselves or their nations.

Our politicians keep acting as if North Korea, Iran, and Syria, (at the least) are all independent players. I contend that they are not, and our failure to realize the confederate nature of their efforts will result in a far worse situation than what we currently envision.

Exactly. After a couple years of “seemingly” backing down even sending message they’re willing to cooperate…they had a sudden extreme change of behavior for the worse a few months ago after reports of Iranian officials were seen touring NK on official business. Something aside from a weak US president taking office injected courage into their ambitions.

The Iranians are dangling some kind of carrot…and perhaps vice-versa. NK is always in need of money, and now supposedly more weapons grade plutonium. Iran on the other hand has plenty of oil cash to splash, apparent new stocks of enriched nuclear materials, but still need the final steps of their nuclear ordinance ambitions either revealed to them or simply tested.

While I am sure that China genuinely enjoys watching Mini-Mao jerking around the US administration, it can’t be in their best interests to see his belligerence ultimately force Japan (and possibly S Korea) to go nuclear and strengthen their militaries.

Perhaps I am wrong, but I believe China is conducting mettle testing by proxy. They let North Korea, their proxy, test the mettle of the US and our Asian allies, then watch the reactions.

If we demonstrate the will and the means to stop China’s goals of hegemony, then they yank on Kim’s leash. But so far, Obama has not passed a single international test, and I doubt he will. So, I believe China expects Obama will, one way or another, sooner or later, bow down before them.

Your post only makes sense if you assume that Obama is incompetent and that his dismantling of America is the result of stupidity. I don’t think he is that stupid, and thus I have to think his dismantling of America is exactly what he wants to do. Either way, we’re screwed. Unless something happens to cause enough Americans to wake up and see that this administration is a threat to their very existence, I don’t see how we can survive until even the next election; if indeed the left would even allow a next election.

We don’t need to let Japan go nuclear, yet. We need to tell China that we are going to, and make them believe it. We should also assure them that if they withdraw support for Pyongyang and NK falls apart, we will let SK handle the bulk of the load of reunification and American troops will not be on their border. The key is China. I don’t think they like Kim any more than we do. They just don’t want us on their border.
