Bibi rebuffs Barack on settlements

posted at 1:15 pm on May 24, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

It didn’t take long for Benjamin Netanyahu to find a reason to rebuke Barack Obama publicly.  After the White House demanded an end to settlement growth and expansion of Israeli areas of Jerusalem and adherence to the “road map” long abandoned by both sides, the Israeli Prime Minister told the American President to butt out of Israel’s internal affairs:

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday rebuffed U.S. calls for a full settlement freeze in the occupied West Bank and vowed not to accept limits on building of Jewish enclaves within Jerusalem.

The note of defiance set the stage for a possible showdown with U.S. President Barack Obama’s administration, which, in talks with Netanyahu in Washington last week, pressed for a halt to all settlement activity, including natural growth, as called for under a long-stalled peace “road map.”

“The demand for a total stop to building is not something that can be justified and I don’t think that anyone here at this table accepts it,” Netanyahu told his cabinet, referring to Jewish settlements in the West Bank, according to an official.

Netanyahu said Israel had no plans to set up any new West Bank settlements. But he told Obama, according to the official, that his government “does not accept limitations on building” within what Israel defines as its capital, the Jerusalem municipality, an area that includes Arab East Jerusalem and parts of the West Bank captured in a 1967 Middle East war.

One can cheer this in at least one aspect.  It sends notice to Obama that Israel will not allow itself to become a doormat to Obama’s ambitions in the Middle East.  Israel has no reason to have any confidence in the road map, and Obama’s insistence on unilateral compliance is laughable just a few weeks after Hamas provoked a war in Gaza.  The Palestinians have done nothing to comply with the road map requirements, and Israel rightly objects to being held accountable alone for its responsibilities.

On the other hand, the settlements will have to get re-thought in any two-state solution.  No state can abide enclaves of non-sovereign territory within itself, especially with sovereignty given to a hostile state.  Israel will likely have to trade land for the settlements in any peace accord, an outcome hotly opposed by Israel’s allies but the only outcome that has even a chance of long-term success in an eventual two-state solution — which is still officially the position of both Israel and the United States.  Expanding the settlements now looks more like a play for a better land-swap deal at the end.

Netanyahu didn’t say he would expand the settlements, and that wasn’t really the thrust of his message anyway.  He got elected in part to defend Israeli sovereignty, and the Obama administration will give him plenty of opportunities to do that.  That could help boost Obama’s standing as a peacemaker in the region, too — a move that could benefit both men.

Wow, so Bibi sat in a room with Obama for a couple of hours and wasn’t so taken with the man that he was willing to sell the soul of his country.

I thought Obama had special powers or something…

Aw, poor Barry. He just found out that he can tell the American automakers what to do, he can tell the American banks what to do, but he can’t tell Israel what to do. Thank God Israel is not a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Obamanation.

One thing we can certainly say is that Obama is not behaving like an impartial arbiter or an honest broker. In calling unilaterally for one of the things the Palestinians have stated as a demand, Obama is, de facto, taking sides.

He will get grief from Democrats as well as Republicans over this. It was a stupid, Carterite thing to say.

SouthernGent on May 24, 2009 at 1:28 PM

The “Palestinians’s” problem is not that they don’t have their own state. Their problem is that Israel hasn’t been pushed into the sea, yet.

There will be no peace as long as that is the case, and giving them land will not change that one bit.

Kensington on May 24, 2009 at 1:31 PM

Welcome back Ed.

I spoke to an Israeli general once who told me that all of the settlements are on “high ground” (hilltops) because they understood recapturing high ground from the Arabs bled the Israelis too much. The issue of settlements is both a strategic and tactical priority needed to offset the Arab advantage in numbers. Don’t expect them to give up any ground willingly let alone the high ground (like settlements and The Golan). Its sort of a throwback to medieval warfare if you look at dispassionately.

Oh and we’ve established a log time ago that there was going to be a rupture between the US and Israel over Iran. Look to the big week long “war drill” taking place in Israel in a couple of weeks. They are under no illusions about the enmity of Iran and obama.

elduende on May 24, 2009 at 1:31 PM

Look, Nentanyahu isn’t simply going to give up unilaterally a negotiating chip.

He wants something in return.

Besides, he’s got his own domestic opinion to worry about.

SteveMG on May 24, 2009 at 1:32 PM

Obama is waaaaaaaay out of his league. So if ol Barry can be president, can we get Netenyahu next time around? Now there’s a man who cares about his country, and it’s citizens.

Now Obama, you may go stand with your muslim brothers.

Kensington on May 24, 2009 at 1:31 PM

I agree. Israel defends itself, and gets demeaned for it. What makes anyone think, that giving Palestinians everything they ask for, that seems reasonable, will be enough? Israel gives, the attacks continue. They will continue, despite Israels efforts.

capejasmine on May 24, 2009 at 1:34 PM

On the other hand, the settlements will have to get re-thought in any two-state solution.

And please stop with this “two-state solution” silliness. There was never any possibility of “two states”, as the arabs in gaza and those in the West Bank have nothing in common and hate each other. I get so tired of hearing people talking about a “two-state solution” when they are really talking about a “three-state solution” (Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza). How much more evidence do people need?

That said, the arabs are going to have to leave the West Bank. They cannot stay there, as Israel would never be secure with an arab state in the West Bank. The arabs there have worked very hard over the decades driving this point home, and they have succeeded. They must leave the West Bank. As for gaza, they can stay there but they need to lose land for every attack they commit on Israel (say a mile strip for every rocket launched or suicide bomber sent from gaza) until they are flushed into Sinai, where the Egyptians can deal with them.

But, please stop with the “two-state solution” stuff. It’s disingenuous and incorrect.

I also like to bring up the interesting question:

Why is it that more “palestinians” have US citizenship, or Israeli citizenship, than citizenship in any arab country, save the palestinian state of Jordan? Hmmmm.

I never hear people ask this question but it goes to the heart of the issue?

progressoverpeace on May 24, 2009 at 1:37 PM

Why must there be a two state solution? The Palestinians have never shown a capacity to govern themselves and will always be a surrogate army for Israel’s enemies.
Netanyahu knows this.Obama ignores that. They already tried the “land for peace” idea and it was a total failure. Why try it again?
There is one fact that a lot of people in the West seem to close their eyes too.The Palestinians don’t really desire peace with Israel. They want Israel to be destroyed as does Iran.
No reasonable policy can be crafted if you do not start from that position. To ignore the real threat that Israel faces from it’s enemies and pretend that “peace” can somehow be negotiated is foolish and naive. How many times do we have keep trying to give “peace” to people who want war before we figure it out?

The real answer to peace in the Middle East is Israel armed to the teeth with nukes and jet planes.

NeoKong on May 24, 2009 at 1:38 PM

So now the President and congress has the perfect excuse to scr** with Israel all they want. Why? Because they know the Israelis would never attack America. On the other hand, those pesky PALs, just might so the U.S. government will treat them like a long lost friend.

Ed, why are you assuming Jews can’t live in a Palestinian state? After all, Muslims and Christians live quite peacefully in a Jewish state.

Any ‘peace’ agreement based on making an area ‘juden-rein’ is baseless. As long as the basic assumption is that Jews can’t live in peace, just like anybody else – there is no reason to support a two state solution.

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on May 24, 2009 at 1:45 PM

What Bibi remembers (and lots of people want you to forget) is that the Democrats under Clinton sent James Carville and Bob Shrum over to Israel in 1999 to make sure Netanyahu and Likud lost to Ehud Barak and Labor, so that Clinton would have a better chance to negotiate a peace deal with Arafat and win the Nobel Prize.

So Netanyahu has experiences first-hand what Democratic Party tactics Republicans have to deal with here, and is not willing to play games with Obama, because he knows the White House would prefer somebody else was the Israeli PM right now (though unlike 1999, there isn’t any candidate/party the Democrats can try to put in power in Israeli that would roll over for the Middle East plans pushed by Obama’s Israeli-hating foreign policy advisers).

I think Obama has never really understood that you can’t “freeze” our allies in their positions as our allies while at the same time seducing the countries that are their rivals.
Our allies have legitimate concerns and national interests, they aren’t solely responding to the US.

I see him do this with Asia, too. He’s given China more praise and attention than Japan, and now he’s given them a higher profile ambassador. Japan won’t be pleased with that for long, although they’ve been an excellent ally for us.

In his infamous “Speaking Austrian” comment, Obama basically acknowledged how surprised he was to find countries actually act in their own self-interest. I think he thought he could keep Israel close without working for it, all the while flirting with Iran and Palestine.

Bonus question: What will POTUS say about our relationship with Israel in his upcoming address to the muslim world?

Never happen. Remember when the morons kept screaming “You can’t use Obama’s middle name; that’s racist!”

Think about it. If Obama had a Jewish surname, both sides would have been tearing him a new one – no matter which side he took.

But, as far as the American mediageist is concerned, accusing Barak Hussein Obama of siding with Islam is exactly as socially acceptable as calling him a “nigger.”

And it could not possibly matter less how obvious and true the allegations happen to be. They will never be made in the public forum.

Im still not understanding the necessity of the settlements, and why strategically Israel can’t find a way to part with them…they seem at the very best a cynical ploy for a better bargain come the inevitable land/settlement swap. and if thats it, it seems as if the costs in leverage with regards to any overarching peace deal seem too high to justify their continued defense…

ernesto on May 24, 2009 at 1:56 PM

On the other hand, the settlements will have to get re-thought in any two-state solution.

On the other hand, some of us do not believe that terrorists should have their own state.

A new poll shows that an overwhelming majority of Palestinians support the attack this month on a Jewish seminary in Jerusalem that killed eight young men, most of them teenagers, an indication of the alarming level of Israeli-Palestinian tension in recent weeks.

The survey also shows unprecedented support for the shooting of rockets on Israeli towns from the Gaza Strip and for the end of the peace negotiations between Palestinian and Israeli leaders.

When and if the Pallies ever grow up many will reconsider.

Dawnsblood on May 24, 2009 at 1:56 PM

A two state solution is unlikely no matter what Israel does. They should stop the settlements, because it reflects poorly upon them. However no amount of capitulation on the part of Israel will result in the Palestinians compromising on right of return and other sticking points. The Palestinian leadership doesn’t want to govern a state, because they need the lack of a nation as a rallying point to distract from their poor governance & corruption.

Good to know that some Israelis still have a spine, unlike most American Jews.

My Jewish mother, G-d rest her soul, was a bit of a hypocrite. She was proud of the Israeli army, but would send her own sons to Canada before letting them get drafted into the US military, with all those redneck “goyishakops”.
If we lived in Israel and one of her kids got killed fighting against the Arabs, she would’ve sued the IDF. Unfortunately, this is the mentality of most Jewish American liberals.

They want their precious children to be doctors, lawyers and businessmen. Let those crazy Israelis sacrifice their kids lives. If they do something heroic, like winning the Six Day War, or blowing up Iraq’s nuclear reactor, or freeing the hostages from Uganda, then they can cheer. But if a young Israeli soldier dies, they shake their heads and say “what kind of life have these people chosen for themselves”. It’s sort of like watching Evil Knievel do a stunt. If he succeeds it’s amazing, if he fails he’s a dumb lunatic.

You may or may not be aware of this thuja. If you are, forgive me – it may be of interest to others. Connections between the Arabs and Nazism are truer than you think. Look up Hajj Amin al Husseini. He was the mufti of Jerusalem. Allied himself with Hitler. Raised 100,000 or more Mohammedan soldiers to fight with the Germans. Was received as a hero when he returned to Cairo after WW2. Ended up mentoring Saddam’s uncle and Yasser Arafat too. These bas****s weren’t exactly taught to be kind to the Jews, much like the Nazis.

Ed, do you really think that Israel is “a doormat to Obama’s ambitions in the Middle East?” Really?

okonkolo on May 24, 2009 at 2:39 PM

I thought most of the Christian arabs have been run out of Bethlehem? Or, maybe,it’s Nazareth?

Blake on May 24, 2009 at 2:15 PM

It’s everywhere in the arab world. Lebanon used to be 60% Christian.

progressoverpeace on May 24, 2009 at 2:41 PM

Look up Hajj Amin al Husseini.

‘Now, now, Bambi, just go to your ‘Happy Place’ and while Georgey and I fix it.’

I’m so glad that Israel is asserting it’s right to steal other people’s land using our tax dollars.

I cannot imagine President Obama making the following statement:

We will convey our deep appreciation for the Jewish faith, which has done so much over the centuries to shape the world, including in my own country.

Nor can I imagine Obama saying that about Christianity. But he did say that about Islam.

I don’t believe Obama is a secret Muslim. But I do believe his international policies and his bow on bended knee before the Saudi King demonstrates a presidential weakness unknown since Jimmy Carter. Obama is adopting policies similar to the submissive EU, and is steering our country into the dangerous state of dhimmitude.

Israel, beware!

Thanks Shy Guy. My lazy a** should have provided some links. Good to know that the guys on my team will cover for my lapses.

Maybe if we teamed up w/ Israel & bought Baja from Mexico, that could be New Israel.

It could work

Ed, do you really think that Israel is “a doormat to Obama’s ambitions in the Middle East?” Really?

I wouldn’t be surprised. Did you see where he went for vacation? I didn’t have too many assumptions left standing with respect to Ed. Now, what was left is gone.

He can start posting pics with poop. I will not be surprised anymore.

Did anybody notice the way Bibi stared down Zero during their sitdown?

Obie couldn’t even look him in the eye.

Bibi makes me wish I was Jewish.

Mr. Grump on May 24, 2009 at 3:16 PM

A “peacemaker” in Obamaland is a capitulating, appeasing surrender-monkey who bows to his Muslim masters.

When will Obama tell illegals in the U.S. to stop living in settled areas?

We already bought quite a bit of real estate from Mexico. Hasn’t stopped the Mexicans from swarming in, setting up residence, and treating it as their own, has it? Mexico’s not exactly what you could call a good-faith seller.

Bibi senses Bambi’s weakness. There is no need at all for him to buckle under to any of his “pressure”.

O’Reilly had the body language girl to do an analysis of the Barry/Bibi presser in front of the cameras. Barry was twisting in the wind and wouldn’t look at Bibi while speaking. Bibi was turned in his chair and staring Barry down. Bibi thinks the guy is a beta and was giving him alpha treatment.
