Video: The obligatory “RNC takes cheap shot at Pelosi” clip

posted at 2:23 pm on May 23, 2009 by Allahpundit

I would have posted this sooner but I ended up locked in a two-hour Twitter battle over it, the highlight of which was my being compared to a hypothetical German in the early years of the Third Reich who refused to go jumping to conclusions about Hitler. Anyway, Politico explains:

[W]hen you see Nancy Pelosi, the Republican National Committee wants you to think “Pussy Galore.”

At least that’s the takeaway from a video released by the committee this week – a video that puts Pelosi side-by-side with the aforementioned villainess from the 1964 James Bond film “Goldfinger.”

The RNC video, which begins with the speaker’s head in the iconic spy-series gun sight, implies that Pelosi has used her feminine wiles to dodge the truth about whether or not she was briefed by the CIA on the use of waterboarding in 2002. While the P-word is never mentioned directly, in one section the speaker appears in a split screen alongside the Bond nemesis – and the video’s tagline is “Democrats Galore.”

The RNC does occasionally display suicidal tendencies — see, e.g., pretty much anything to come out of Michael Steele’s mouth over the past few months — but I can’t believe they intended to call Pelosi a “pussy” knowing how offensive it is, how many votes it could cost them, and how outrageously outraged the media would be on her behalf as a way of changing the subject from her lies about waterboarding. Even the GOP’s not that self-destructive. They are, however, evidently tone-deaf enough to cast her in the role of a generic Bond femme fatale here, which very stupidly and gratuitously injects her gender into a war they were winning. The left’s cried wolf over GOP ads so many times, in such astoundingly hysterical ways, that by now the presumption of innocence is almost irrebuttable. And yet, I’d love to know who among the Republican brain trust thought this was a good idea. Even if their motives were pure, after seeing what happened to Limbaugh’s “I hope he fails” comment, they simply have to be more attuned to how their message will be received and whether they’re giving their opponents easy opportunities to distort it. A private citizen like Rush, who doesn’t have to worry about winning elections, can afford to be indifferent to that. In the case of the RNC, it’s inexcusable.

Are you denying that Obama is Hitler and Stalin’s illegitimate gay Muslim love-baby?

SHOW US THE BIRTH CERTIFICATE HUSSEIN.

Proud Rino on May 23, 2009 at 2:28 PM

O)f course “Politico” is just another DNC polyp.

Can you imagine anybody with a brain defending Pelosi’s coruption and dangerous lies?
I love this:

“Even if their motives were pure, after seeing what happened to Limbaugh’s “I hope he fails” comment, they simply have to be more attuned to how their message will be received and whether they’re giving their opponents easy opportunities to distort it. Nothing about substance, just perceptions and other diversions. It’s a clear snapshot of the Obamasized Left.

TexasJew on May 23, 2009 at 2:29 PM

AP, I’m genuinely surprised that you would fall for Politico’s claptrap like this. The article itself is utterly defamatory, it smears Republicans as misogynists nearly in the first sentence, and it relies on second-hand relating of the clip’s contents instead of letting people judge for themselves.

This is a blatant attempt for Politico to cover Pelosi’s backside by injecting gender politics into a political fight. I see no black marks on the RNC for this.

I see an astounding parallel with that “racial tinge” hooey that AP Obama was peddling to turn the election into a race war. Politico should be ashamed of themselves.

KingGold on May 23, 2009 at 2:30 PM

The “Poosy Galore = Nancy Pelosi” in this video is a bit of a stretch IMO.

Though it is certain to enrage the perpetually-enraged.

rockbend on May 23, 2009 at 2:31 PM

I thought this ad was funny, and it seemed pretty obvious that they were trying to equate Democrats as being a bunch of pussies – not just Pelosi.

That was my take on it, but is that really new? Haven’t Republicans been making that argument for, like, 50 years, only in less blatant ways?

Doesn’t everyone kind of realize that?

Anyway, I thought it was a pretty funny ad.

Proud Rino on May 23, 2009 at 2:31 PM

Now you’re behaving like a pussy.

Blake on May 23, 2009 at 2:31 PM

That’s it? Sorry, but you’d really have to work overtime to force yourself to be offended by that.

Ronnie on May 23, 2009 at 2:31 PM

Are we not tired of worrying about what the left says? Lets talk about what this was about, the SPEAKER of the house stating the CIA lies to us instead of our enemies…

javamartini on May 23, 2009 at 2:34 PM

Politico should be ashamed of themselves.
KingGold on May 23, 2009 at 2:30 PM

They’re only following their orders.

TexasJew on May 23, 2009 at 2:35 PM

Allah,
Anything one can say about Ried, Pelosi or Obamugabe is a cheap shot.

The very truth about these ass-clowns is slanderous.

TheSitRep on May 23, 2009 at 2:36 PM

Allah, how much are the Democrats paying you? I’ve been reading you for a long time here and it seems that any time our side finally takes the fight to the enemy you start moaning about how embarrassing it all is. The ad is beyond awesome. The Democrats would have to turn themselves inside out to make anything of it and would look foolish in the process. The Republican/Conservative side of the issue has enough people telling it not to “jump for the brass ring” without you.

dostrick on May 23, 2009 at 2:37 PM

Really unfunny and really cheap looking. Two cardinal sins. That being said, I love it. It will turn the theme to Pelosi as victim, thereby everyone will forget any lie she may have said and the meme will go back to RNC/GOP as the boogeymen. Sometimes I really think the RNC has been infiltrated with spies by all the stupid stuff they seem to come up with.

dcwvu on May 23, 2009 at 2:38 PM

I’m just going to point our that the actress’s name is actually Honor Blackman. Fill in your own shots – it’s a target-rich environment.

Longhorn Six on May 23, 2009 at 2:39 PM

There are worse words that can be used against this excuse of a human being.

promachus on May 23, 2009 at 2:39 PM

The only problem I see with the ad is that it’s boring and lame- and unfortunately typical of most the RNC/GOP’s ads.

Hades69 on May 23, 2009 at 2:40 PM

I’d think the uproar would be about the rifled barrel centered on Pelosi while the text “CIA vs Pelosi” floats by.

DarkCurrent on May 23, 2009 at 2:41 PM

meh. it’s cute. What so bad? We, as conservatives have to get used to the idea that the thing that pisses the left off the most if using their words against them. That is, it’s considered bad form to actually quote them.

The only thing missing from this spot was a quote saying that if Nanners is right, then the CIA lied only to her but told everyone else the truth.

Also, the clip needed more Nanner’s stumbling and bumbling.

Finally, make the logical leap that, gee, HugObama isn’t showing leadership because he’s letting the CIA hang out to dry…that he isn’t defending his institutions.

joeindc44 on May 23, 2009 at 2:41 PM

The Palomino Pillars of Pelosi are
cracking!!!!!!!!!!!

canopfor on May 23, 2009 at 2:42 PM

Folks, all they did was show the picture of the villainess (who ends up saving the day, btw) who most looked like Pelosi.

Please get a grip, people. Anything to distract from the outlandish and possibly criminal behavior of the Speaker is exactly what the politico wants.

michaelo on May 23, 2009 at 2:44 PM

Much ado about nothing.
Politico really has to be looking for something, anything to be offended by. No normally adjusted person would ever go where they took this. To me it speaks of where their addled brains can be found on a daily basis. To come up with their interpretation requires a strong back ground in hate and fiction

oldernwiser on May 23, 2009 at 2:44 PM

I wouldn’t call this offensive, but I would call it a bad move. This is going to cause grief we don’t need.

I thought the GOP was already winning the war of public opinion when Donkey Punch Pelosi (I don’t represent the RNC…I can be crude) started questioning the honesty of the CIA.

This ad just offended the easily offended, and gave leftist hacks yet more petty (but in their eyes convincing) ammunition in the debate about how Republicans hate women.

ynot4tony2 on May 23, 2009 at 2:45 PM

By definition, any RNC salvo against the Democrats is a “cheap shot” and “dirty politics”.

Didn’t you read the memo?

Techie on May 23, 2009 at 2:46 PM

I haven’t been in any mood to defend the RNC lately, but I didn’t see anything wrong with that. And I even went into it fully expecting to groan. They want people to think of spies (ie the CIA) when they see Pelosi, not the p-word. The only thing I didn’t like is that it’s just one more attempt by the Party to be “cool” and culturally relevant that just comes across as lame (not that the DNC does much better in this regard, but their friends in the media blow us out of the water artistically).

IU_Conservative on May 23, 2009 at 2:46 PM

Sheesh Allah, you are such a tenderfoot. Why are so called conservatives cowered by every criticism from the left. If anything they were too soft on that old battle ax.

Kjeil on May 23, 2009 at 2:46 PM

Where were these A$$hats when they attacked Palin in their ads? BTW only the left could put those two thoughts(Pelosi and Pussy) together. 1. Because of their bigotry, sexism and misogyny 2. Because no one in their right mind would ever think of granny nanny Pelosi in that way. Does everyone here remember the leftist troll comments? Talk about coded language.

My mother(RIP) used to tell me that the only ones who ever accuse the innocent of something are usually guilty of what they are accusing the innocent of.

The left is full of sexists, mysogynists, and bigots. This is why the left percieve objections to their policies as being sexist and bigotted.

canditaylor68 on May 23, 2009 at 2:48 PM

It’s been discussed @ Gateway Pundit

Andie Coller, Politico, needs to be consistent defending females from sexually nuanced attack regardless of ideology. We already know the prejudiced nastiness Coller’s Politico colleagues dished out to Palin. Coller, however, mentions McIntyre’s defense of Palin:

Some subjects provoked serious — and seriously heated — discussion, such as the coverage of the 2008 presidential race, which McIntyre decried as “media malpractice.”

Those on the right were particularly steamed about the treatment Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has received at the hand of Democrats and the press.

“For the first time a woman in power was showing her feminine side, and they went after her for trying to do both,” asserted Rob Van Raaphorst, a former spokesman for the Republican Governors Association, now an ad man with the firm that did the “What Happens in Vegas Stays in Vegas” campaign — kicking off a lengthy debate that was all the more remarkable in the GuyPartisan context.

Glancing through Google “Coller, Politico, Miss CA” either Coller remained silent or took part in Politico clips from Miss USA contestants asked political questions by judges.

Females aren’t the only ones biting the bullet on looks as old men get called names as well. Fred Thompson took perpetual verbal abuse without whining, staying the course of each interview on topic, the conservative Constitutional platform.

I agree that to focus on the sexual anatomy is rude, regardless of which sex.

But to jump from Galore to Pussy was not literal until Coller said so, and only in her own complaint. The point of the Bond reference is the obvious characterization of the CIA that Pelosi lied about in order to leave them endangered abroad and their funding endangered as well. THAT is vicious, and done only to hide Pelosi’s own lies. Pussy just doesn’t do it, Ms. Coller. You’ve jumped to the wrong slang for Pelosi’s utter lack of integrity.

I didn’t take anything from the ad when I saw it – like hades69, I thought it was boring & lame. (Except for the cool theme music, of course!)
If any offense can be taken, I think it’s lining up Nan in the gunsite, then having the “blood” flow down over her. How come her goons aren’t all over that?

KS Rex on May 23, 2009 at 2:49 PM

My mother(RIP) used to tell me that the only people that accuse the innocent of crimes are usually guilty of those crimes themselves.

Kjeil on May 23, 2009 at 2:46 PM

Cowering? Where?

CWforFreedom on May 23, 2009 at 2:52 PM

PS – I know in the movie opening, the “blood” is that of the “viewer”, not the person in the image. But the perpetually enraged will likely see it the other way around.

KS Rex on May 23, 2009 at 2:52 PM

If it gets rid of the donks who are calling themselves conservatives and demanding we change our platform to suit them, then mission accomplishment.

but I can’t believe they intended to call Pelosi a “pussy” knowing how offensive it is, how many votes it could cost them, and how outrageously outraged the media would be on her behalf as a way of changing the subject from her lies about waterboarding.

Thinking back…just a few months ago, I recall Palin was called every disgusting name in the book, by some very public figures. It’s not apparent that cost Obama any votes at all.

The perpetually outraged would/will find something to whip themselves into a lather over. Today, it’s this ad, tomorrow, it will be the color of Cheney’s shoes, or something else equally ridiculous. They should be ridiculed, then ignored.

DngrMse on May 23, 2009 at 2:54 PM

I knew I could count on the authors of this blog to engage in yet another attack on the GOP.

VinceP1974 on May 23, 2009 at 2:55 PM

I think you over analyzed AllahP.

I don’t see it the same way. It’s Bond 007 (Secret Agent/CIA) vs. the evil generic Bond adversary (Evil Mastermind/Pelosi).

The “Lack of Leadership. Democrats Galore” is a just that. Democrats lack leadership qualities in a huge way. All of them do. Pelosi’s ‘most ethical-open-blah blah blah Congress ever’ thing comes into play because she obviously banked on Democrats keeping the door locked tight against investigation into her accusations of the CIA lying and intentionally deceiving Congress, which is a huge crime, after she used that as an excuse to diaper her fat butt from being exposed to the lies about what she knew and when she knew it. It was the trump card in the blame game and she made sure it couldn’t be played before she put her cards on the table.

The video’s a nothing burger. Albeit, RNC videos tend to pretty much suck.

rob verdi on May 23, 2009 at 2:53 PM

Right on. Why won’t AP toughen up? He is personally failing to win elections for hundreds of Republican candidates nationwide by suggesting that running ads that could be construed as calling the first female Speaker of the House a “pussy” might not be the smartest thing for the RNC.

Proud Rino on May 23, 2009 at 2:56 PM

I am going out on a limb and suggest that 95% of the voting public have never seen the RNC ad nor will they read Politico’s inane analysis. This is just a non-issue, IMO.

msmveritas on May 23, 2009 at 2:58 PM

As a devoted James Bond fan, I cringe. It was mostly incoherent, except for the very end; it painted Gibbs and Pelosi as complete buffoons, but come on, those two need no help in that department. I expect the RNC to come up with something better than this.

Travesty.

TexasJew on May 23, 2009 at 2:59 PM

No it doesn’t. What it implies is that Pelosi is the mob boss of a bunch of gangsters that are robbing us blind under our very noses.

I think the ad is clever and creative. Politico’s assumption of the intent demonstrates just how effective they believe it to be.

As Nancy so well put it… I won’t be distracted by this distraction.

Texas Gal on May 23, 2009 at 2:59 PM

What does James Bond imagery, sound effects and terminology have to do with Nancy Pelosi? This ad buries the lead within distracting extraneous material. Never bury the lead.

Hot Air staff and posters have done a better job of skewering Pelosi than this ad. Is there a Soros funded troll doing the ads for the RNC? We have a soft ball hanging over the plate with the bases loaded, and the batter tries to steal third. This is worse than doing nothing.

I like the James Bond movies, but someone needs to lock up the theme songs and keep them out of the hands of the RNC. Remember the lousy Dr. No ad in the McCain campaign.

If an ad was necessary, all they had to do was string together Pelosi’s several versions of her story. That would have been damning enough.

BuckeyeSam on May 23, 2009 at 3:00 PM

I think it’s kinda funny Allah thinks the GOP will lose votes of this though. If anything the Donks should have just ignored it, but NOW it will get more buzz and no matter what will work as a negative more to the speaker than the producers and no matter how offended Allah is will not cost the producers votes.

Lori_Z on May 23, 2009 at 3:10 PM

The RNC could put up ads accusing Obama (or Nancy) having sex with a cocker spaniel, and I wouldn’t complain.
After eight (going on nine) years of continual “Chimpy McBush” and “Darth Cheney” accusations, and I could give a rat’s tuchis.

Besides, no self respecting cocker spaniel would want to have anything to do with those two lying scumbags.

TexasJew on May 23, 2009 at 3:11 PM

My point (not well made) was that if there’s anything to be annoyed with in that ad, it’s not the ‘p@#$% galore’ bit, it’s the viewing of Pelosi through a rifled barrel. Had nothing to do with the point of the ad, the subject matter, etc – was just dumb and unnecessary, giving easy fodder for the Dems to bitch and moan (I’m surprised they went the p@#$% route for their outrage, frankly).

Midas on May 23, 2009 at 3:13 PM

———————————
Pinocchio, Snow White, and Superman are out for a stroll in town one day.

As they walked, they come across a sign: “Beauty contest for the most beautiful woman in the world.”

“I am entering!” said Snow White. After half an hour she comes out and they ask her, “Well, how’d ya do?”

“First Place!” said Snow White.

They continue walking and they see a sign: “Contest for the strongest man in the world.”

“I’m entering,” says Superman. After half an hour, he returns and they ask him, “How did you make out?”

“First Place,” answers Superman. “Did you ever doubt?”

They continue walking when they see a sign: “Contest! Who is the greatest liar in the world?” Pinocchio enters.

After half an hour he returns with tears in his eyes.

“What happened?” they asked.

“Who the heck is this Nancy Pelosi?” asked Pinocchio.

GoodBoy on May 23, 2009 at 3:15 PM

Another point of view about the bigotry of the left from Lloyd Marcus.

canditaylor68 on May 23, 2009 at 3:16 PM

You’re Right Allah that video is not Evil Enough….

Dr Evil on May 23, 2009 at 3:17 PM

I see these image and hear that music and I’m thinking James Bond, not Octopussy. Might be some irony there – Bond being an agent for the British version of the CIA and Pelosi calling the CIA liars.

That’s not the easiest jump to make but I would never pick up on any misogynistic “pussy” reference.

DarkKnight3565 on May 23, 2009 at 3:17 PM

I thought the ad was lame. I hardly view it as sexist, just kinda dumb.

XWing5 on May 23, 2009 at 3:18 PM

Whenever I see Pelosi engaged in a lie I’m reminded of the perfect Hollywood character to represent her.

“But I never got the CIA briefing on waterboarding, Wilbuuuur.”

(A horse is a horse, of course, of course.)

viking01 on May 23, 2009 at 3:18 PM

That ad was tame. Politico and the two APs are overreacting.

thebrokenrattle on May 23, 2009 at 3:18 PM

So how does any of this make Pelosi less of a liar?
eforhan on May 23, 2009 at 3:14 PM

Nothing at all, just more navel-examining about “perceptions” or something.
The party’s about to end, now that the dollar is tanking, unemployment is rocketing upwards, the “stimulus” is being recognized as a failure, the bailouts are political poison, and the Dow is still 500 points below where it was on January 20th, and dropping.
Allah needs to stop freaking out about the flea circus, and just watch the money….

TexasJew on May 23, 2009 at 3:19 PM

That’s below the belt? REALLY?! Below the belt? Give me a break.

El_Terrible on May 23, 2009 at 3:20 PM

implies that Pelosi has used her feminine wiles to dodge the truth

feminine wiles!? now that’s quite a stretch … like Pelosi’s face.

stormin1961 on May 23, 2009 at 3:20 PM

Maybe the RNC should just put up posters of unicorns, or Obama.
TexasJew on May 23, 2009 at 3:03 PM

Do you REALLY think that an entire politcal movement consisting of infantile and hypocritical hedonists can’t make something dirty out of that?

POLITICO – Dateline, ten seconds later

“In his autobiographies, Barak Obama proudly regaled us with tales of his homosexual conquests in college. So now the RNC has started publishing only two kinds of posters – One of Barak Obama, and the others displaying a mythical beast with an appendage that could theoretically be inserted into the rectum of The First African-American President Of the United States.

SHAME on you, Republicans. You are a despicable and dirty-minded bunch of reprobates.”

logis on May 23, 2009 at 3:21 PM

I think it was just a stupid, trying to be “hip” Fail. Nothing nefarious. Stupid, yes. Would I have run it? No. But I’m awfully tired of constant ‘crying wolf” claims of sexism.

Lori_Z on May 23, 2009 at 3:10 PM

Democrats will cry wolf at anything the RNC does. But a smart ad campaign makes their cries seem ludicrous. Their cries about this ad are ludicrous, unfortunately though, so is the ad.

The ad is not sexist, nor is it promoting the assassination of the Speaker. But the ad is as stupid and counterproductive as I’ve ever seen from the RNC.

Loxodonta on May 23, 2009 at 3:21 PM

I think the RNC needs new Marketers – ones that don’t remember the James Bond era Sean Connery. This is not relating to the the younger voter.

What’s hot right now? Use a current trend -phenom not one from the 60s.

Dr Evil on May 23, 2009 at 3:23 PM

I forgot the question mark at the end of my first paragraph.
BuckeyeSam on May 23, 2009 at 3:14 PM

I don’t care. At this point, spelling and grammar are minor leagues stuff. You’d still run a far better ad campaign than the RNC.

Loxodonta on May 23, 2009 at 3:24 PM

I think too much analyzing is going on. The ad is intended to keep the story going. Nancy is trying to make it go away by refusing to discuss it any further. Politico’s author is trying to change the narrative because they know it’s not going away. Pelosi made a serious charge about the CIA lying and the ad shows her saying their business is deception, she’s calling them liars by trade therefore they lie to Congress as a matter of business as usual. That’s the key phrase.

Texas Gal on May 23, 2009 at 3:24 PM

Politico, don’t be so emotional.

faraway on May 23, 2009 at 3:25 PM

“Who the heck is this Nancy Pelosi?” asked Pinocchio.

GoodBoy on May 23, 2009 at 3:15 PM

Funny. Thanks for posting that.

Hello! RNC! Get a clue!

Loxodonta on May 23, 2009 at 3:26 PM

Allahpundit’s little girlfriend is a real idiot. Because she dislikes this ad, she is bad mouthing the republican party as fast as she can, including emailing everyone she can about it. She is one of these idiots that everyone is always telling us that we have to welcome into the party. I have no desire to attract or welcome people as immature and hysterical as KamiNcali.

IdiotNcali

Blake on May 23, 2009 at 3:26 PM

Without needing Politico to tell me how to react to the video, when I saw this on Fox News a few days ago, I simply took the James Bond undertones as relating to the fact that this whole mess dealt with the CIA and the intelligence community.

Never once did any synapses fire to make the connection between Pelosi and some temptress persona…(just threw up a little in my mouth)…

selias on May 23, 2009 at 3:27 PM

was the left this upset over the “Sarah Palin is a c***” shirts?

BPD on May 23, 2009 at 2:55 PM

Did the DNC distribute those?

crr6 on May 23, 2009 at 3:27 PM

I don’t think the Left wants to play the sexist card in what looks like a stretch, not after the mauling that Carrie Prejean endured with unadulterated sexism. But the dummies on the Left don’t care, so don’t be surprised to see the Uber Hypocrites Oblerman and Matthews pursue this line of attack.

They’re better off having Specter defend Pelosi.

EMD on May 23, 2009 at 3:27 PM
