Video: Obama takes swipe at Iraq war — at Naval Academy commencement

posted at 1:53 pm on May 22, 2009 by Allahpundit

A parting shot at Cheney about “necessary” wars from a guy who reminded us just yesterday about how important it is to look forward, not backward, unless he’s in a political jam and needs to blame Bush for something. For all the leftist hyperventilating about Cheney’s supposed sleaziness — and as usual, Olbermann takes the cake — Lowry has The One dead to rights about his own casual caricaturing of the opposition:

For all his championing of nuance, Obama comes back to one source for every dilemma: Bush, as though without his predecessor every question about how a nation of laws protects itself from a lawless enemy would be easy. Under Bush, according to Obama, we set our “principles aside as luxuries we could no longer afford.” Even now, there are those — are you listening, Mr. Former V.P.? — “who think that America’s safety and success require us to walk away from the sacred principles enshrined in this building.” What a shoddy smear…

Excoriating Bush is good politics for Obama, which is what makes his repeated exhortations to look ahead so disingenuous. In his speech, he rued that “we have a return of the politicization of these issues.” In other words: Dick Cheney, please shut up. But when did the politicization of these issues end? Has the Left ever stopped braying about Bush’s war crimes?

What makes this nod to politics at Annapolis’s commencement especially cheap is that John McCain, whose son graduated today, was in the audience. That’s the same John McCain who gave Obama cover last night on Fox News by reiterating his belief that waterboarding is torture, the same John McCain whom The One is counting on for further cover in closing Guantanamo, and the same John McCain who concluded, in all apparent good faith, that the Iraq war was necessary after all. And still, Obama couldn’t help himself. Click the image to watch.

“Necessary” for what? I don’t doubt McCain’s good faith, but this is one of the reasons people saw him as senile in the campaign.

I agree with your analysis of Bush ending with a tougher and safe America, and Obama now cycling us back to a pre-9/11 status.

Given world conditions, we need a leader who is very strong on defense. Yet, Obama is only strong in defending and advancing himself.

We have no idea where the next target will be inside our country, or when or how an attack will be attempted. However, one small nuclear bomb going off in a major US city would have a devastating impact. And I believe our enemies would lust for the opportunity to pull that off. And I honestly fear such an attack will happen before a new president replaces Obama’s personal narcissism with the national strength needed to stop it.

Workingforpigs, don’t fear the revolt that is coming – hope and pray for it. We need to settle this once and for all. We’ve been saying that liberalism is our version of socialism for years – populated by people who have zero reverence for our founding documents and principles. In order for this to happen, sufficient numbers need to see and be deeply affected by the naked anti-Americanism of those allied with Obama.

Military officers take an oath to the Constitution, to protect and defend it from enemies external and internal.

There is a lawsuit where a bunch of active and retired military officers are asking Obama to prove that he’s any more eligible to be president than, say, Hugo Chavez (my paraphrase). If he’s not, then their obeying his orders would be just as criminal as obeying Chavez’ orders. They could be court-martialed for doing so.

They would give their lives in the keeping of their oath. Obama? He flips them the bird just like he did to Hillary Clinton. He has spent huge amounts of money to be able to hide the real COLB which would show why he posted a fake instead (whose “seal” didn’t bend when the page it was supposedly on bent).

I have a military friend who says the military would stop Obama from being able to know or do anything if they thought he was a bad guy. How far into communism and the Chicago way do we have to go before some bigwig military person decides Obama is bad enough? I’d say posting a forgery of your birth certificate – when a genuine one is the only thing that could show you’re NOT a Manchurian candidate – is pretty bad…

Thank goodness the Cheneys have come out to speak with such powerful truth and authority for conservative America.

Utilizing VOTES to maintain our Constitutional Government is the ideal.

Holding politicians accountable is the necessity.

Conservatives need not revolt, as we’ve been the backbone of America; WE ARE AMERICA. We stand on the US Constitution, the highest law of the land. There truly is no higher law in the US until some Amendment changes the Constitution’s format.

It is the Left that is revolting, in every sense. It is the Left that attacks people personally with horrible vendettas.

Never advocate violence. Be aware. Be wise. Be prepared.

maverick muse on May 22, 2009 at 2:51 PM

I can’t imagine Obama maintaining his approval rating. To me, he seems like a nice guy that would make a good girl scout leader or community organizer.

But as Commander and Chief of the United Stated security, he strikes me as being too pompus and self absorbed.

The only actions he has taken that I approve of are the security decisions where he stayed with the Bush policies. Stimulous, Tarp, the budget, global warming, health care policy, tax policy, welfare policy, immigration policy, etc. all seem to be anti-American.

The only way I see that he takes those positions is if he truly believes that all America is just like South Chicago. If you are familiar with South Chicago, you know that it has achieved very little success by any reasonable standard.

I want to agree with you. But toppling Saddam Hussein wasn’t violence. It was war. War against someone who was already at war with us. If, as I believe, America has reached a point where the Constitution is dead and there is no honest law enforcement, where the government steals from private citizens to give their money to unions and any other political corruption that gets TOTUS elected… what do we do?

Somebody gave a gutsy comment inviting Obama to just try to go after her financial assets like he did to the Chrysler debt holders. I asked but never received a reply to this question: If he takes your assets and a judge somewhere says you don’t have standing to sue (as has since happened in Indiana), what will you do?

That’s where we’re at, folks. We are in many ways Saddam’s Iraq. Or Axelrod’s Chicago, if you prefer. Or the druglord’s Mexico. It can happen here; it already has. So what are we going to do about it? I don’t like violence, but “violence” is what created this nation. If we had to do it again, would we?

strangelet on May 22, 2009 at 3:11 PM

As a retired naval officer who participated in Iraqi Freedom from invasion to stabilization in 2003, I can say this speech doesn’t resonate with me at all. Sailors didn’t think Iraq was an unnecessary war. We are proud of our service in that war, as in all the wars the Navy has fought in.

I also recall clearly the wind of change that blew through the whole military when Bush declared war on terrorism, and was willing to actually fight it, on a wartime basis, and give us effective and robust rules of engagement. The sense that this president would stay in the lead, let us do our job, and not leave us hanging out to dry was a palpable change from the Clinton years.

I understand that the creeping paralysis of the Clinton years (or what old-timers remember from the 1970s) is starting to come back, for those in service today. I can tell Obama, a service academy audience is not inspired to hear things like “We will not ask you to carry all the weight on your shoulders.” The reaction is less likely to be relief or gratitude than “WTF?”

Military service is, by definition, the carrying of a lot of weight. Our volunteer servicemembers don’t sign up for it because they are anxious to be relieved of it. You don’t inspire them by assuring them you won’t ask them to carry too much. You inspire them by promising that the load they carry will matter to the republic — to liberty — to America.

When you do that, you impress no one by referring with derogatory allusions to your predecessor or his policies — and certainly not by dismissing the weight the military inevitably has to carry as having been unnecessary, in one particular instance or another. You may have that opinion, but as commander-in-chief, focusing on it is not your job.

Giving vent to your partisan and discouraging opinions, when you are speaking to those you lead in wartime, is what we in the military call being “weak and undisciplined.”

Um, Anderson? Is it appropriate for a sitting president to mock his predecessor? What’s good for the goose is good for the gander, ass-hat. Deal with it. Instead of whining about the fact that Cheney is speaking up, why not address his CONTENT? Obama mocked bush during his damned Inauguration with Bush sitting a few feet away. Since WHEN does any Democrat have the right to whine about mocking? Give me a friggin’ break.

Obama: “I’ve got some news for John McCain. He took us into a war, along with George Bush that should have never been authorized, never been waged.”

There’s plenty of precedent for Obama bringing up completely irrelevant things from the past in order to take a swipe at his opponents. I still can’t believe such a juvenile prick became our president.

Oh…we went to war cuz Saddam was a torturer? But we torture, right?
And sure I don’t approve of tyrants torturing their citizens.

BUT I deplore EVEN MORE American soldiers dying in a war of choice.

Especially 4000 of them.

strangelet on May 22, 2009 at 3:15 PM

During your hero Bill Clinton’s pResidency, well over 4000 American soldiers died in non-combat related incidents. Are you going to spit on Bubba as well?

As for us going into Iraq because Saddam tortured his own people, thanks for showing your utter ignorance. The 2002 Iraq Resolution lists that as reason #7 out of over 20 reasons. Read the resolution yourself.

http://www.c-span.org/resources/pdf/hjres114.pdf

Here’s the money quote. Remember, O’bama’s Secretary of State voted yes on this.

Whereas Iraq persists in violating resolution of the United Nations Security Council by continuing to engage in brutal repression of its civilian population thereby threatening international peace and security in the region, by refusing to release, repatriate,or account for non-Iraqi citizens wrongfully detained by Iraq, including an American serviceman, and by failing to return property wrongfully seized by Iraq from Kuwait.

Del Dolemonte on May 22, 2009 at 3:29 PM

Military service is, by definition, the carrying of a lot of weight. Our volunteer servicemembers don’t sign up for it because they are anxious to be relieved of it. You don’t inspire them by assuring them you won’t ask them to carry too much. You inspire them by promising that the load they carry will matter to the republic — to liberty — to America.

U.S. defense chief lauds soldier in pink boxers

In fact, Gates said he wants to meet the soldier and shake his hand the next time he visits Afghanistan.

“Any soldier who goes into battle against the Taliban in pink boxers and flip-flops has a special kind of courage,” Gates said in remarks prepared for a speech in New York.

“I can only wonder about the impact on the Taliban. Just imagine seeing that: a guy in pink boxers and flip-flops has you in his cross-hairs. What an incredible innovation in psychological warfare,” he said.

It’s a funny image, but it made me proud.

So NONE of these newly graduating cadets are deploying overseas??? Many of them probably already have their deployment orders, or at least know where they’re going. So yes, this A$$hat *is* sending them into “harm’s way” which I guess means he now considers these wars “absolutely necessary”. He is so arrogant, he makes my skin crawl. How dare he be so condescending to people he’s not even worthy to polish their boots. My 22 yr old son over in Afghanistan has more leadership experience than this moron.

No. I’m serious. That’s what got me into the anti-war movement in the first place after initially supporting the Bush adventures until 2003.

Great thread- Obama really hit bottom in terms of class with this shameful political speech.
I hope the GOP realizes what Rush, Cheney and Newt ( plus most of us) know- that this person is not going let up on the grand plans he has. Any coincidence that he had 2 speeches scheduled today at 9 and 12:00 (Rush and Hannity)- this is calculated Orwellian stuff.
There will be no “getting along” with this man.At this point, there is nothing left to do but fight without quarter.

I don’t know if the Swiftboat guys have anything to do with it.

I tell you what, though. After what happened with the “Haditha Marines” and Murtha via the NCIS, I don’t trust the top military people to do right by their own guys. If I understand it correctly, Easterling’s request has to go up the chain of command. If Murtha is holding the purse strings, what military higher-up is going to seriously address this issue?

I personally called my FBI office in Lincoln, NE. The guy I talked to angrily told me THREE times that the FBI doesn’t investigate document forgery and he couldn’t tell me anybody who does. I went online to find out who investigates and eventually filed a report – that is supposed to go to….. the FBI.

Why does a field officer of the FBI in Lincoln, NE have to lie to me about something I can so easily find out myself?

I called Nebraska’s US Attorney’s office. They said they can’t take reports from we, the people. It has to come from an agency tasked with investigating such things. She suggested I talk to the FBI. Sigh.

A US Senator made a request for the FBI to investigate this issue. The US Attorney’s office was contacted about it and they said they couldn’t act on it because they hadn’t had the issue referred by the FBI.

I called both my senators and my representative and looked over the document at http://www.factcheck.org/birth_certificate_5.jpg with them. I pointed out that the circle cut in half by the top fold is distorted. It bends with the fold. The “seal” dissected by the bottom fold doesn’t. It’s perfectly round. They all agreed with my observation. They all said they would inform their boss. All three of those guys know Obama committed document fraud. If any one of them had requested the FBI to investigate, the FBI would have to investigate. But they’re not.

There’s way too much that I could say. But suffice it to say that everybody in law enforcement knows a blatant crime has been committeed – a crime that calls into question the eligibility of the “president” who is turning this nation communist. Not ONE of them will do their job. One cop down in Texas tried but now he’s the one being investigated for “politicizing” his work – investigating document fraud involving a black politician, you know…

Sigh.

Obama vows not to send people to war without cause

WOW! My God! Stop the PRESSES!!! Obama vows not to send people to war without cause. Oh My God! He’s the first in history to do that, isn’t he? Jesus….. what will Presidents do from now on?

I cannot believe this headline….Obama vows not to send people to war without cause….. what will other countries say? What will our children say? Obama will not…. I repeat NOT send people into war without cause…… UNBELIEVEABLE! How Christian of him. How splendid and magnanimous of him! I mean…. who would have believed it?

This will set America back fifty years!! We will NEVER recover!

I am at a loss for words.
