Republican congressman wants 2010 declared the “year of the Bible”

posted at 6:10 pm on May 22, 2009 by Allahpundit

As Politico notes, Reagan and a Democratic Congress had no problem pushing this through in 1983. A quarter of a century later, has atheism come so far that it can afford to ignore the feds trying to pass a similar resolution now? Oh yes, my friends:

“This doesn’t have anything to do with Christianity,” [Broun] said in an interview with POLITICO. Rather, he says, it seeks to recognize that the Bible played an integral role in the building of the United States, including providing the basis for our freedom of religion that allows Muslims, Hindus and even atheists to vocalize their own beliefs…

Atheists, who might feel themselves a particular target with the declaration of a biblical year, aren’t even worried about Broun’s effort.

“Right now, we’re seeing atheism on such a rise,” said David Silverman, vice president and national spokesman of American Atheists, a group dedicated to fighting for the civil rights of atheists.

“We are seeing Christianity on such a dramatic decline that we’re not particularly worried about it. We’re thinking that this kind of old-style George W. Bush Republicanism is about to go away,” Silverman said, referring to the latest Pew Forum survey of American religious life, which showed nonreligious Americans as the fastest-growing group.

Snarks Barney Frank, “Does that mean 2009 is not the year of the Bible? What is 2012 the year of? The Quran?” Actually, if this gets passed, maybe. Once Congress recognizes a “year of the Bible,” inevitably there’ll be a push from interest groups to recognize other faiths — and non-faiths. If you don’t want 2015 to be a “year of ‘The Origin of Species’” or whatever, you’ll side with the godless on this one.

Exit question: If they did pass it, would The One sign it? I know which way I’m betting!

I pray that our politicians in Washington would worry less about making 2010 the year of the Bible and worry more about following it themselves in 2009!

2010 will be year two of the Scroomage.

Can we get 2012 to be the year of the Necronomicon?

We’ll need it by then… enough of these ‘lesser evils’, give us the real deal.

Every year is the year of the bible. We don’t need to declare it. It’s already been declared by a higher authority. To do so would change nothing. It’s a waste of time.

“Right now, we’re seeing atheism on such a rise,” said David Silverman

the latest Pew Forum survey of American religious life, which showed nonreligious Americans as the fastest-growing group.

Non religious doesn’t mean atheist if that’s what Silverman is trying to say. I’m not Christian or any established “religion” follower at all, but I’m not atheist either.

I also think that people who haven’t been raised with any real religious tone to their upbringing aren’t thinking much about religion. Those people are wadded up into this number as well I’m betting.

The left seem to want everyone to be anti-religion or anti-god. It’s another one of those issues you can’t force, or steer public opinion on. Not truthfully anyway, I mean, religion is becoming such an odd issue that people are becoming…what’s the word…unless they’re strong people they’ll test the water before speaking so the opinion they voice ‘seems’ aligned with the majority of people they’re surrounded by at the time.

Maybe ‘Lemming’ is the right word. The only people you find that will be truthful about what they believe are real conservatives (regardless of whether or not they are in the GOP).

Yes, this was the long way of calling liberals liars and mindless, gutless lemmings.

“Right now, we’re seeing atheism on such a rise,…“We are seeing Christianity on such a dramatic decline”

We are also seeing the United States in a “dramatic decline”, and yet somehow people seem unable to put the two together. Trace England’s decline will rejection of Biblical Christianity and THEIR decline. We don’t seem to be able to learn from their mistakes.

Snarks Barney Frank, “Does that mean 2009 is not the year of the Bible? What is 2012 the year of? The Quran?

I think this prayer from Billy Grahan says it best….”Heavenly Father, we come before You today to ask Your forgivness and to seek Your direction and guidance. We know Your Word says. “Woe to those who call evil good,’but that is exactly what we have done. We have lost our spiritual equilibrium and reversed our values. We have exploited the poor and called it the lottery. We have rewarded laziness and called it welfare. We have killed our unborn and called it choice. We have shot abortionists and called it justifiable. We have neglected to disipline our children and called it biulding self-esteem. We have abused power and called it politics. We have coveted our neighbor’s possessions and called it ambition. We have polluted the air with profanity and pornography and called it freedom of expression. We have ridiculed the time-honored values of our forefathers and called it enlightenment. Search us, oh God and know our hearts today; Cleanse us from every sin and Set Us Free. Amen!! With the Lord’s help, may this prayer sweep over our nation and wholeheartedly become our desire so that we again can be called “One Nation Under God!”

Great prayer especially for this thread! Good quote, but wrong attribution. Pastor Joe Wright said this (or essentially this) prayer at the Kansas House of Representatives. Caused at least one Dem to walk out of the hall and others to object. But the response to his church was overwhelmingly positive. It has been misattributed to Billy Graham and Paul Harvey (Harvey evidently quoted it on his program.)

These kinds of moronic stunts are what turn off the independents and conservatives like me. With unemployment skyrocketing and massive federal debt bankrupting the nation, I propose a compromise, lets just call it the year of more important things to do. I fail to see any valid reason for spending one dollar debating things like this.
