Heart-ache: White House cancels kids’ tour to host Steelers

posted at 12:27 pm on May 22, 2009 by Allahpundit

Via Breitbart. This isn’t Obama’s fault — the schoolbus got stuck in traffic and arrived just before The One’s long-scheduled meet and greet with the Steelers was set to start — but what kind of partisan would I be if I refused to serve him a crap sandwich this tasty? It’s got everything: Angry parents, class overtones, and of course the irresistible pathos of disappointed moppets fighting back tears. Eat up, Barry.

If the kids were from the DC area, meeting the Steelers might not have been the best option: “My Daddy says you suck!”

DrSteve on May 22, 2009 at 1:17 PM

About what you’d expect. When he can bask in the glory of adults sucking up to him, why would he choose to see a group of kids who in reality have no clue who or what he is and won’t be voting until he’s out of office.

The President doesn’t meet the tour groups… I’d hope that he’d have more important things to do.

It seems like the issue was that the staff needed to prepare the East Room for the Steelers’ arrival and said no entrance. Some junior staffer was probably more concerned about not getting reamed by Emanuel over the Steelers’ photo op and didn’t realize how awful turning away a bunch of five year olds would look. Again, it is Obama’s fault for staffing the White House with morons, but not his fault for not knowing what is going on with a tour group.

JammieWearingFool on May 22, 2009 at 1:21 PM

If they have time for Wedenesday night parties, then certainly they had 10 minutes, to indulge some young ones. I’m sure these kids don’t understand the magnitude of what this field trip meant, but they were excited about it, just the same.

*snip*

Skywise on May 22, 2009 at 12:32 PM

This was the very first thing I thought of. The kids would have gotten to meet the President and the Steelers. Sure, the kids would have practically ignored Obama in favor of the Steelers, but this would have been a *huge* PR victory for His Holiness.

Granted, I can’t entirely fault Obama for this. Some flunky made the call. Obama, however, could have said to go ahead and let the kids in when they arrived.

Democrats – they never miss an opportunity to miss an oppotunity.

Vic on May 22, 2009 at 1:21 PM

Actually, a valuable teaching moment. The kindergarten class did not live up to their end of the bargain – to arrive on time – and so must live with the consequences. I would expect liberals to feel sorry for them and demand that rules be broken for these poor helpless crying kids, but I for one am happy that these kids learned the importance of arriving on time.

DaveO on May 22, 2009 at 1:21 PM

Why would a group of five-year-olds even want to meet a president? What can they possibly understand about the White House?

What kind of crap have their teachers filled their heads with about who Barack Obama is that would make them cry because they couldn’t meet him?

DrSteve on May 22, 2009 at 1:25 PM

Ya know what would have been cool and I would have given him complete credit for it? Inviting the kids to the ceremony to honor the Steelers. Have them get to meet the Steelers players and such and then reschedule the tour for a later date. THAT would have been great making lemonade out of lemons. But, can’t expect him to think of something that classy.

Michael in MI on May 22, 2009 at 1:26 PM

Something very similar happened to me 16 years ago when Clinton came into office. I was part of a group of kids (which changed every year) who had, in prior years, met with President George H.W. Bush. It was unclear as to whether this tradition was going to continue, and ultimately we heard that the President was too busy to meet us. It was a bit disappointing, although the only comment I recall from the whole ordeal was one of us lamenting missing his chance to say the words “Gennifer Flowers” to the President.

What a wretched thing to do the kids. They probably had been wound up with excitement for days before this. What kind of heartless person holds to such a tight timing? I’ve driven in D.C. traffic and it can be a nightmare.

No matter if it was staff, the guy in charge sets the tone on down. IMO, those who are met with consideration from above quickly learn that it’s expected from them as well.

I’d side with you, but being stopped in traffic in DC could very much be just bad luck.

I was there once and they blocked the street in front of me while I was driving in that street. A bunch of officers pulled into the intersection with their motorcycles and stopped us. I couldn’t turn around and they wouldn’t let cars through till a caravan came through. Then they opened up the road. Sat there for 30+ minutes of no fault of my own.

Okay – I feel that. So why was his lunch a reason to prevent these kids, who had gotten up early, traveled from out of the area and each paid $20 to charter the motorcoach, from receiving a White House tour? I know you don’t know, I’m just wondering what the President’s lunch schedule had to do with the tour.

eucher on May 22, 2009 at 1:42 PM

So that guy holding up the Steeler jersey is a body double. Got it.

BobMbx on May 22, 2009 at 1:27 PM

No… That was obviously Obama. Meeting with the winners of the winners of various NCAA and professional sports championships is a ceremonial thing that the President does as Head of State. Along with various other selected winners and groups of people… However, he doesn’t meet with every tour group at the White House. I’ve been on a tour of the White House (when it was still open to the public) and can tell you that you just get shuffled through the State Rooms by a tour guide. Although it is only open to school groups now, that’s still quite a few school groups to meet with the President. I’d hope that he’d have better things to do.

The issue with this school group had nothing to do with the President’s schedule or meeting the President in person. They probably had some of the rooms closed off to set up for the event in the East Room. The tours are likely scheduled around different events in the White House, and there was some miscommunication between when the students had to arrive (9:30 vs 10:30). The whole thing was poorly handled by whichever junior staffer said no, but it cannot be pinned on Obama himself. (Except for his inability to hire competent people).

Illinidiva on May 22, 2009 at 1:44 PM

See above… It seems like they had to set up for the event and closed off some of the rooms generally on display for the public. Basically, the White House didn’t want some five year olds underfoot when they were trying to set up chairs and microphones in the East Room.

Well, perhaps the Chief Exec could plan a little better in the future — it’s not like the kids just showed up and knocked on the door. Oh well, I guess it is a good lesson for them after all – kids, politicians will cost you money, waste your time, go back on a promise, and basically break your hearts.

Brat4life on May 22, 2009 at 1:59 PM

Why didn’t this turd just bring the kids to meet the Steelers too. That would have made too much sense.

elduende on May 22, 2009 at 2:02 PM

It’s not really his fault. A twenty something staffer (or perhaps even an intern) is likely in charge of figuring out what times are available for the tours and coordinating with the school. It seems like someone in the White House gave them the wrong time or the school misheard. The issue is that it was poorly handled by the White House. It seems that whichever junior staffer shooed them away was a little snot and didn’t defuse the situation properly. The White House could have easily kept this from blowing up with a profound apology about the mix-up, some White House souveneirs for the kids, and a rescheduled date.

Again, the person who is directly to blame for this incident is a junior staffer who doesn’t work directly with the President and probably has only met him on a few occasions. So you cannot fault Obama directly for this, but you can fault him for the overall competence of his staff, which seems to be pretty low.

Illinidiva on May 22, 2009 at 2:05 PM

15People were also bringing babies to Jesus Obama to have him touch them. When the disciples White House staff saw this, they rebuked them. 16But Jesus Obama called the children to him and said, “Let the little children come to me wait their turn, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God Obama belongs to such as these millionaire football players. 17I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive donate to the kingdom of God Obama like a little child millionaire will never enter it the White House.”

ProudPalinFan on May 22, 2009 at 2:05 PM

It seems to me that it was supposed to be a White House tour, probably with the hope that the kids would get some time with the President but no guarantee. Still, even if the kids only got to spend a minute or two with the President, it would have made their day, but the big deal was just being in the White House. I can’t understand why the tour itself couldn’t have been accomplished. That said, how difficult would it have been for the President to briefly meet with the kids before the Steelers arrived or to break away from the Steelers to spend a little time with 150 kindergarten students and their teachers and chaperones?

If the White House didn’t want to multitask and combine both groups — having the kids meet the Steelers as others have suggested — why couldn’t the White House staffers let the kids have their tour anyway (without meeting the President)?

Apparently the staffers involved are unable to think on their feet. It makes one wonder how those staffers would react in a real crisis if they can’t manage small stuff like this.

He backtacks so much and adapts some W’s issues (after tearing him apart), but unlike W, he cannot think of hanging out with kids in the Lawn, or worse: PLAY BASEBALL WITH THEM LIKE W USED TO DO.

Note to those kids: Get a hold of the Boys and Girl’s Club. They (in Pittsburgh at least) they have meet and greets all the time! Yes the Steelers must be ticked off at this, because they help so much on diverse charities and want kids to look up to what they can accomplish.

OOohhh The Bus is gonna talk about this on his TV show??? I hope??? Flexibility is not really a part of the Great O administration.

ProudPalinFan on May 22, 2009 at 2:11 PM

It’s not really his fault.

he’s the haed guy, so yes, it is his fault.

What I’m sure you meant to say is that it’s not directly his fault, which is correct. The person directly at fault for this is Rahm Emanuel, the Chief of Staff whose job it is to make sure that stuff like this does not happen.

What I’d like to know is why no one thought to call someone at the school to find out where the bus was at, say 10 AM. Remember, the school said their arrival time was 10:15 but the WH spokesattacker said the group was scheduled for 9:30. No one, but no one, just fails to show up for a pre-planned White House tour. So why didn’t someone call when the group was 30 minutes late to find out what was going on?

That would have been the minimally-intelligent thing to do, especially if the White House was that pressed for time. So what happened?

You got that right, meeting with SUPER STARS, watching basket ball games and finding time to attend his own kids sporting events, doesn’t leave anytime for all the work he is doing, let alone interfering with the preperations for the big event. He is too busy, as he said, “reading reports and writing stuff” during his “office Hours”. Reading reports sounds like something he is suppose to do, and probably does to see what “he” is doing, but writing stuff? Who discribes their job as “writing stuff”. It is just an excuse of his lack of having anything to point to that he has actaully worked on. Imagine telling your boss when he asked what you are doing every day and you tell him you are reading reports and writing stuff. But then you were defending your champion so you missed the point being that the children who were ten minutes late, even arriving before the white house said they shut the gate, were told they were not going to be allowed to take a tour. Nothing was said about a president that was too excited about meeting sports stars, meeting with the kids. They were there to tour the white house. Next question is just how long was that tour suppose to last? Looks like to me it was scheduled to be a quick walk thru and don’t let the gate his you in the backside. In my opinin this was probably a last minute change of plans to accomondate Obama’s ego and even if the kids had arrived on time they would have been told that the tour had been rescheduled for 9:30; sorry if they missed the memo, but they were too late to have the tour.

With all due respect, the issue isn’t that the group was late, or whether Obama was late, or on time, or anything like that. Once the problem arose, Bambi should have fixed it by strolling over to the kids for a few minutes, say hello, tell them how cute they were, and tell them he has to go inside now to answer the phone and would they like some lemonade and cookies.

The problem is Obama is an as*hole, and that causes other completely unnecessary problems to arise.

fwiw, my kids wouldn’t have been allowed to go on that particular school trip, so it serves the stupid parents right anyhow.

JiangxiDad on May 22, 2009 at 2:39 PM

Oh for crying out loud. Those kids were there for a tour of the White House, not a meeting with Obama. Does anyoe really expect the President to have anything to do with tours of the White House? The meeting with the Steelers was a photo op that every President has with the Super Bowl winner.

Why didn’t this turd just bring the kids to meet the Steelers too. That would have made too much sense.

For someone that loves kids and respects people, that would not have been a problem. For someone that sees kids as something to kill before they have a chance to speak and punish their mothers, and believes he has the power to do what ever he wants because He Won, it is not worthy of a moment of any bad feelings. However the problem was not meeting with the kids. I am sure that there are dozens of groups that tour the white house every day that do not meet with the president. The problem is that they interferred with one of his important social event that just happen to be scheduled at the same time as his personal tour of the steelers and preperations for his lunch with the stars. I am sure that there are a number of people out there like him that would agree that kicking a bunch of rug rats to the curb so that they could meet the superbowl winners, or hero of choice, was the right and more important thing to do. From what I know of the steelers I bet they would have had some not so nice things to say to him if they had known how he dumped the kids to rub shoulders with them. Every one of those kids should have a picture of him holding up his “Obama” jersey with a caption at the bottom that says; This was more important than me” Wear it with pride to your daughters games, bambi.

Good God! I hate Obama; I’m not defending him at all but I also think that you should have a good reason to hate him. His tax and spend policies, demonization of his opponents, and unwillingness to take responsibility for his actions are more important to me than a scheduling snafu.

And I’m also a bit disturbed that a bunch of politically savvy adults seriously believe that the President actually meets with tour groups. That’s something that I’d suspect that the five year olds on the tour might think was going to happen. (And the teacher would have likely had to explain to them that this is not the case). A White House tour is a very controlled guided tour of the public rooms of the White House. It seems like the issue that interfered with setting up chairs, etc. in the East Room for the Steelers event.

This definitely could have been handled better by the junior White House staff, but Obama wasn’t aware of the group. Let’s not become Kos Kids here.

Illinidiva on May 22, 2009 at 3:14 PM

Not. Michelle’s. Children.

bluelightbrigade on May 22, 2009 at 3:15 PM

Again, Obama wouldn’t have been aware of the kids so he wouldn’t have done anything. Could the junior staffer who turned them away handled the situation in a more professional manner? Most definitely. Does it reflect poorly on Emanuel and by extension Obama that the junior staffers are self involved snots? Yes it does.

Illinidiva on May 22, 2009 at 3:18 PM

to those who disagreed to my prev comment: yes it was the driver’s and the administrators’ and the teachers’ and the parents’ faults and the kids suffered the consequences for it. Tough break. What kind of lesson would we be teaching the kids if we let them cry their way into special treatment. They were part of a group and the group effed up. Thems the breaks

DaveO on May 22, 2009 at 3:22 PM

Kids or no kids. Steelers or no steelers. Obama’s still a lowlife scum-sucking POS. What he chooses for his photo op du jour is irrelevant. Those five-year-olds will be able to grow up and vote for Obama’s fifth term in 2024, so really, what have they missed?

If it were anything else, I might agree. Something smells funny when the WH claims that even the scheduled arrival time was wrong. The media has gushed about how casual this administration is about schedules and start times (on time for thee but not for me) so it seems hypocritical for THIS administration not to have a little leeway for a scheduled school group…especially when DC traffic can range from ghastly to horrific even if they left extra early.

Laura in Maryland on May 22, 2009 at 3:34 PM

It’s a little cheap to hang this on Obama. Could have just as easily happened under any president, and he may not have even been aware of it.

Still . . . if I’m the president, and if I know about this, I tell my staff, “We are not going to send a bus full of kindergarteners away in tears. Find a way to fix this, now.”

calabrese on May 22, 2009 at 3:35 PM

Apparently the Steelers were helping the White House in packing care packages for troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Rush commented today that why didn’t Obama let the kids in to help the Pittsburgh Steelers pack boxes for the troops? It would have been an awesome photo op. Oh well, I guess we can just be glad that Team Obama is not afraid to make kindergarten kids cry.

Mr. Joe on May 22, 2009 at 3:38 PM

It’s a shame the White House is so small it can’t host two groups at the same time.

James on May 22, 2009 at 3:38 PM

Of course, the schoolkids would never want to meet the Pittsburgh Steelers, either.

James on May 22, 2009 at 3:40 PM

Maybe the kids were Cardinals fans!

calabrese on May 22, 2009 at 3:41 PM

But Obama has the <a href=”http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AGosYIlXdmU”strength and will to make kids cry.

Mr. Joe on May 22, 2009 at 3:55 PM

Strength and will to make kids cry…

You can not judge Obama on this.

Of course if the kids would have been 15 rather than 5, Obamaman would have shown them the LOVE.

Schmo on May 22, 2009 at 4:25 PM

It’s probably good that he ducked this meeting – some of those Kindergartners were at tea parties (mine was) and may have posed a question more difficult than the Intern in Chief was ready for.

eucher on May 22, 2009 at 1:28 PM

“Obamama..why am I expected to cover losses for bankers and car executives who make poor decisions?”

I would pay to see that!

HOw cool would it have been for the One to usher them into the Steeler’s meet and greet? A quick explanation to the grown men, and everthing should have been fine.

cs89 on May 22, 2009 at 5:07 PM

I wonder about the discrepancy on the times that the teachers and White House thought were established for the visit. Obama’s WH has been pretty universally disorganized. I would guess that someone there either accidentally gave the wrong time to the school, or changed the time and didn’t tell the school.

Axelrod wasn’t present to right the script for that solution and load it into TOTUS. Seriously, what solution to anything has Obama ever come up with?

Finally, a use for the ubiquitous scandal suffix that makes sense: WhiteHouseGate.

I doubt the economically challenged neighborhood schools would have the money for an out of town field trip. Had it been so, though, I think there’d have been a show for the guards to remember, ‘YES WE CAN’.

SarahW on May 22, 2009 at 4:27 PM

A tour of the White House is not to say a meeting with the President. That the kids were denied a visit to the grounds themselves is really tacky.

But Rush had a good idea that you mention. It takes a POSITIVE win/win mentality to figure how to let things work well. Obama & Co. are lacking.

maverick muse on May 22, 2009 at 6:07 PM

Again… the President doesn’t meet with tour groups. At least, I seriously hope that he has more important things to do.
