Disgrace: Pelosi stands by smear of CIA

posted at 11:51 am on May 22, 2009 by Allahpundit

No retraction, no apology, not even a clarification. She’s obviously concluded, not unreasonably, that the more she talks, the worse things get. I thought the story left off, though, with her having absolved the agency and blamed everything on Bush instead. Are we back to her claiming that the CIA misleads Congress all the time or are we still pretending she was silent about this for four years because she didn’t want to make things hard on Dubya? I’m confused.

Politico’s leading today with a story about how the GOP’s supposedly overplayed its hand by having “polarizing” figures like Cheney and Gingrich attack her. Could be — the Democrats are certainly circling the wagons, per yesterday’s party-line vote not to investigate what she knew about waterboarding — but of course, if any more damaging info emerges, now they’re on the hook too. Says Jimmie Bise of the House vote, either the CIA’s lying and Democrats don’t care that our intelligence bureau is corrupt or Pelosi’s lying and Democrats don’t care about the CIA being maligned by the Speaker of the House. Either way, most ethical Congress evah.

Well, they voted yesterday on no more investigation. This is a bit of a Glen Beck move. Nancy is bold now that she’s weathered the storm.

AnninCA on May 22, 2009 at 11:53 AM

Good, then there should be no objection to an investigation, right?

Either way, that’s no way to go forward in dealing with national security.

Wow. This woman is a true disgrace to this country and the Democrats are equally a disgrace for allowing her to keep her position as Speaker.

The Democrats are the party of corruption, and that needs to become the GOP message.

WisCon on May 22, 2009 at 12:00 PM

Is this botox-infested excuse of Speaker actively trying for an approval rating in the single digits? She is already on the least popular Speakers in US History.

Good for the GOP though, as long as she remains Speaker she will be the gift that keeps on giving for us.

Norwegian on May 22, 2009 at 12:02 PM

She feels safe now…several days passed and the CIA didn’t drop any more shoes (Looks like Panetta was sent a message, so no more leaks)…and the house has covered her rear.

Obama needs her for the next wave of destructive legislation…that’s the priority. Case closed, I’m afraid.

“I’ve made the statement I’m going to make.”

“and not be distracted from it, in this distractive …”

“I’ve made the statement that I’m going to make.”

Where do I learn how to torture English like this?

I think that it’s about time that people start asking these America-hating socialists, every time they talk about waterboarding being torture, if all of the military chain of command should be prosecuted for torturing our SEALS and special forces in their training. We all know this point, already, but no one is putting it to these morons, directly, and I would just love to hear the Pelosi-monster (and others) try and explain how the US government only endorses “torturing” American citizens, but not terrorists. They need to be forced to say, directly, that it’s okay for the US to torture people who defend us.

BillaryMcBush on May 22, 2009 at 12:02 PM

Yes, there’s that. Also, if the Bush years taught us anything, it’s the capacity of the CIA to be underhanded, vindictive, and devastatingly toxic to an Administration they don’t like. The Liberal academics at the Agency have been pretty tingly over the One’s Ascension…but Nancy seems hell-bent on doing something about that.

Bring. It. On.

Noocyte on May 22, 2009 at 12:08 PM

Hard to believe that the CIA doesn’t have some juicy bit avaiable for leakage. Whether it would be made public or squashed is questionable.

jp on May 22, 2009 at 12:10 PM

Could get interesting if there’s a CIA report on some foreign development (NoKo, Iran, Pakistan), and someone asks, “But doesn’t the CIA lie? Pelosi and Specter said they did.”

The Dems may have trouble using an authority whose veracity they have questioned.

Wethal on May 22, 2009 at 12:12 PM

Could be — the Democrats are certainly circling the wagons, per yesterday’s party-line vote not to investigate what she knew about waterboarding

Transparency!

This is, in historical terms, one of the most stupid episodes I can imagine… a politician desperately trying to absolve herself of doing the right thing (approving of the waterboarding) and her political opponents desperately trying to prove that she was really a hero after all (although I get that they really want to dampen Dem criticism of the Bush admin).

mankai on May 22, 2009 at 12:12 PM

A peek a what is probably going on at the Agency right now would probably show: Some professional spooks are preparing resumes and some of the more dedicated will keep on doing what it takes to keep the country safe irregardless of what the “law” says.

In a way its hard having too much sympathy for the agency that helped tar Bush enough that made this hypocritical insanity and Obama possible. They have reaped what they helped to sow. Here’s a hint to the agency; don’t trust the leftists again they are the enemy.

I also hope the CIA understands that if there is another intelligence failure they WILL get the blame for it by those same socialists that are busy tarring it now.

elduende on May 22, 2009 at 12:12 PM

Nancy Pelosi vs the entire intelligence community – it’s just not a fair fight!

Noocyte on May 22, 2009 at 12:08 PM

True, but Bush still treated them with deference and respect…for no other reason, than he realized how much he needed them to prosecute the war on terror…

The Democrats are a very different animal…they have no objectives other than their own self interests…the CIA can be easily neutered by people who don’t consider the CIA’s effectiveness nearly as important as their own political survival.

AUINSC on May 22, 2009 at 12:13 PM

I

think that it’s about time that people start asking these America-hating socialists, every time they talk about waterboarding being torture, if all of the military chain of command should be prosecuted for torturing our SEALS and special forces in their training.

Hmmm…instead of prosecuting the chain of command, what about finding a soldier who was waterboarded and convince him to sue the US government for violating his civil rights?

This would force the Courts to rule whether or not waterboarding is torture. If they dismiss the case as frivolous, the decision is made. If the court hears the case, they then have to render a decision. Either way, the matter will be decided.

Judicial Watch…are you listening?

Human Rights Watch…are you listening?

ACLU….are you listening?

Anybody? Or is it that merely having the case in a courtroom so scary that neither side wants to touch it?

I don’t share your perspective. I see that Nancy lied or was incredibly inept in her ability to listen and compute. Either way, her credibility is hurt a great deal. I see her statement today as pretty much like the boy whistling in the dark. It’s her mistake. She’ll stick to it.

When, in the last 50 years, have the Dem/MSM cabal not torn down this country? When, in the last 50 years have they been ethical, square shouldered, patriots? They trot Jimmah Carter around like some prize racehorse. Billy gets zero grief for his land deals and playing John Holmes in the people’s house. Jefferson’s freezer has long since thawed out yet what price did he pay? Reid, Murtha, and Kerry stick a knife in our troops back and the nation doesn’t care. This is the game we want to be involved with? Are we waiting for the people to educate themselves, or bury us?

Nancy gave Obama an opening in their power game.
Obama told her that in the future she had better back him on everything he wants or he was going to press her CIA blunder further.
She agreed.

The only thing that could open it up again is a leak from some lower level CIA person…plus a person in the MSM to give it the exposure it needs (and that is not going to happen.)

Nancy simply cannot stay in her own corner. In the primaries, she angered women all over with her glib remark, “Sexism, I didn’t notice.” Then she went on to explain Catholicism and totally sounded like a blogger with zip historical knowledge. Let’s not forget the stimulus bill. Trust me, Obama will pin that on her when it comes time. And now, this.

What we need to call for is Obama to release the memos that prove Cheney’s case. (I can’t believe Cheney would call for anything that would be dangerous…blind faith I know) And then let the chips fall where they may.

Finding that Nancy didn’t oppose the tactics at the time–because they were working–makes Nancy’s current stance all the more shocking.

Just curious-where did you see a poll saying that a majority of Americans believe her, and think the CIA was lying? The new Gallup Poll shows that a majority of Americans trust the CIA, and only 31% of them trust her. In fact, she came in dead last.

I am wondering what source will be used to leak the Pelosi Skeletons in her Political Closet? Will the Bush Family take much more of Pelosi accusing Dubya of torture in the media?

Pelosi has more important fights ahead.

She’s limping in wounded.

Let’s make it a requirement that your state must have a balanced budget in order to be able to hold a congressional leadership role.

If, for example, California were to not be able to pay its bills, the members of Congress from California would still be able to vote, but would not be eligible for leading committees, caucuses or to be Speaker.

Folks, the CIA is on a leash. Leon Panetta is still a Democratic appointee. After creating his own misdirection play by sending one letter saying “we don’t lie”, he is no doubt prepared to control the agency as directed, rather than as Director. That is why Nancy P. and the Dems are willing to take on the CIA in front of the cameras. She won; live with it.

Wait. The Dems circling the wagons to protect a blatant liar is bad for the Republicans?

Jim Treacher on May 22, 2009 at 1:18 PM

Pelosi is the weakest link. Maybe some on the right should start biting.

Upstater85 on May 22, 2009 at 1:19 PM

This is a bit of a Glen Beck move.

AnninCA on May 22, 2009 at 11:53 AM

No, it would be a Glenn Beck move if she actually engaged her opponents and was pilloried over trivia.

You have such bad taste. I suggest using a hammer and chisel.

Please break out your George Orwell dictionary.

Freedom is slavery.

Bad is good.

That’s one of the most naive things I have read in a very long time. How old are you?

I’m fine with crushing too.

But I’d almost prefer picking – picking at the left’s massive scab.

Anna Flaherty, Breitbart

The GOP has seized on her accusation that the CIA misled Congress, contending that the California Democrat’s remarks have demoralized the intelligence community. House Republicans on Thursday demanded that a bipartisan panel investigate her allegations.

“To have this charge out there and not have it resolved I think is damaging to our intelligence efforts, and certainly will have a chilling effect on our intelligence professionals around the world,” said House Republican leader John Boehner, R-Ohio.

Democrats beat back the proposal, calling it a political ploy. Republicans Ron Paul of Texas and Walter Jones of North Carolina joined Democrats in a 252-172 vote to block the resolution.

Upon leaving the news conference on Friday, Pelosi declined to answer a question about whether she had called CIA Director Leon Panetta to discuss the matter further.

Instead, Pelosi had stuck faithfully to her script, saying Democrats were making progress on other issues.

“We’re going forward in a bipartisan way for jobs, health care, energy for our country,” she said. Regarding the CIA’s briefing of Congress on waterboarding, “I won’t have anything more to say about it.”

He’s been licking himself again. That radical hairball got stuck in Ron Paul’s craw; anything to disrepute the CIA, regardless of context and record. But here’s the proof of hypocrisy, because Ron Paul just enabled MORE GROTESQUE spending legislation than the first 100 days begat already, giving Nancy Pelosi free rein to reign. Rue the day.
