Video: Obama acknowledges Defense Secretary “William” Gates
posted at 11:49 am on May 21, 2009 by Allahpundit
I’m pretty sure this is Bush’s fault; everything else in his speech was. I’ll have a separate post soon on The One’s declaration that we shouldn’t relitigate the past eight years even though that’s what he spent the morning doing, but enjoy this tidbit for now. When you’re distracted by the business of governing 57 states, gaffes are bound to happen.

I especially liked the way that The Precedent tried to distinguish between his treasonous release of the EIT memos and the release of more Abu Ghraib photos. Does he really think that anyone with a brain buys that?

Hit a raw nerve? Get a grip.
Everyone has his or her own gifts. But I doubt that it takes the same intestinal fortitude to send a sales force after IBM customers as it takes to make military decisions that affect many lives.

Rush just commented that Obamaman’s speech was almost 1/2 hour late, and that he probably was hoping his tardiness would keep the networks from airing Cheney’s speech afterward. I would not put it past “The One” to do something like this on purpose.
Susanboo on May 21, 2009 at 12:38 PM
I posted this on the headline thread, but what struck me was how often The Precedent used ‘I’, ‘me’, ‘my’, ‘mine’, … We need to get a count on this. This moron’s ego is huge, which is amazing considering how sub-par he is in everything. A clear schizophrenic without any attachment to reality, at all – and that is one of his milder mental problems.
progressoverpeace on May 21, 2009 at 12:38 PM
Big whup. I think it’s Freudian. Lefty blogs (e.g. Crooks and Liars) and radio hosts will trumpet any Righty blogs or radio hosts who pay attention to this story and laugh saying, “This is the best conservatives can do?” And they’ll do so ignoring everything else. This shouldn’t be given any attention.

Hey, how about a compromise? We let Barry live in the white house, and read teleprompters, and feel better about himself for a while, as long as the real power in America is held by Cheney? That way, the libs who know only emotion will feel satisfied, while the adults in this country will be able to sleep at night again.
Vashta.Nerada on May 21, 2009 at 12:39 PM
And when reading the names, didn’t EVEN realize the name was listed wrong!
Obama’s out there trying to sell his version of national security for America and he doesn’t even realize the name of his very own Secretary of Defense is Robert and not William!
It’s just as Cheney said, it’s all about politics with Obama and it has nothing to do with keeping our country safe.

Even if you think waterboarding is torture, in 2002 it wasn’t. No matter how you want to twist the defenition, waterboarding was not legally defined as torture in 2002.
President Obama can try to go back in time and prosecute people for things that were legal at the time, but it won’t work. The only person in trouble if he chooses to do so is Pelosi for lying about it.

To expand upon my 12:41 point, strangelet, it’d be like Congress going back in time to prosecute credit cards companies for violating a law that Congress just passed. Just because raising interest rates without ‘sufficient’ warning is illegal now, doesn’t mean it was back in 2002.

But of course–we all know the Won’s game by now–they don’t want Cheney’s strong opinions heard…looks like it backfired on Axelrod Inc. though…as it turned out, Cheney began his speech just moments after O’s, the perfect rebuttal, perfectly timed and it was carried by all 3 networks live…it was like the adults entered the building to rebut the idiocy preceding.

I think there’s an indian religion that works like that: the Universe ends and begins anew with each word spoken by their God.
Just the same as when Obama said the “teabaggers” were silly for saying that ONLY his most recent spending increase ALL BY ITSELF was enough to permanently bankrupt America.
It’s the only defense they have, and they will keep using it forever. Obviously, there’s no way to reason with it. The only way to deal with it is to over-saturate it; make them keep saying “this is all you got?” every day, 365 days a year.
By 2012, we’ll have hundreds of these things to choose from and be able to provide a summary that will get through the skull of the most clueless moderate.
Of course the True Believers will maintain their chanting throughout, but the more times we make them do it the more hollow it will sound.

I’m well versed on the history of the practice. I’ve had some pretty good argument with starfleet_dude on the subject.
Comparing the EIT version of waterboarding to the practice used by the Japanese or our soldier in Vietnam is either naive or disengenuous. They are not the same thing. One simulates drowning, the other literally drowns the subject, forcing water into their lungs and abdomen.
But I digress. You are I aren’t really even arguing. We both want truth commissions. We just see a different outcome.

I understand the knock on him that he’s lost without a teleprompter but there’s just somthing about that criticism that makes me roll my eyes. There are so many, honest to god, existential threats to this nation that this President piles on top of us every day that I just wish we could focus on those. When you have the opportunity to put away a Chicago mobster for life on murder charges why bother yelling at him about unpaid parking tickets? I just have a hard time feigning outrage about verbal miscues while I watch the gvt spend us into giant deficits, sweep metastisizing foreign threats under the rug, dismantle the CIA, take over private industry, and cater to the comfort of captured terrorists at the expense of our own national security, etc. I don’t think its effective to chip away at his persona that way and, in fact, I think it hurts us. It waters down our legitimate critisms.
