Video: Congress figures out way to assure the public they’ve read the bills they’re voting on

posted at 7:28 pm on May 21, 2009 by Allahpundit

Cute, but the Standard’s right. All they’re doing is laughing at their own dysfunction, demonstrated most memorably and grotesquely when they passed a $787 billion stimulus bill without bothering to read it. Behold the most ethical Congress evah — the same one that pushed through TARP funding without adequate oversight mechanisms to keep it from turning into a slush fund, the same one that rejected a call to investigate what Pelosi really knew about waterboarding earlier this afternoon. There’s transparency for you.

Don’t reserve your contempt for them. The One’s promise of transparency on stimulus funds was a big fat lie, too.

Update: Linked in Headlines earlier but worth adding here: CREW lists the 16 most corrupt members of Congress, 12 of whom are Democrats.

Speed Readers?

Are you freaking KIDDING! Why do we elect these stupid people?

Idiots!

Wonderful. I love watching smug lying conmen taunt me while I help pay their salary, which I dream of having.

Rat-faced bastards. Literally.

I’m sure glad the adults are in charge

conservnut on May 21, 2009 at 7:35 PM

OK, I guess at this point the Republicans might as well pretend they are idiots. In all seriousness, the bill will do actual harm while few will notice the pretending.

No, Standard doesn’t have a point. Of course, it’s a stall tactic. Nobody reads 900 page long legal documents out loud with the purpose of better understanding them. They should actually take time and read it at home or in their offices or wherever.

Still, since I don’t like the bill, I guess I support whatever method to block its passage.

radiofreevillage on May 21, 2009 at 7:38 PM

Wait wait wait, can you repeat that? But slower?

FontanaConservative on May 21, 2009 at 7:40 PM

This is outright stupid …

tarpon on May 21, 2009 at 7:40 PM

Our Tea Party group had a meeting with our congresscritter Kevin Brady. We gave him pure hell for voting for the first TARP without reading it. I’m sure he is not the only republican catching hell over that. So that might explain part of this tactic.

conservnut on May 21, 2009 at 7:41 PM

Do they still make guillotines?
Just wondering.

Itchee Dryback on May 21, 2009 at 7:43 PM

That was too funny, and perfectly appropriate for legislation on the fantasy of global warming. But, why didn’t the Congress critters just have a computer read it, aloud. THey could have it all done in 2 seconds. And it’s only global warming, so it’s not as if there’s anything sensible in there, anyway.

Monty Python might sue these jokers. I don’t recall a bit of theirs along these lines, exactly, but this was dangerously close to the “Twit of the Year” skit. And Waxman does remind me of the dead parrot, himself.

If it were up to me, Congress critters wouldn’t be allowed to vote on a bill until they passed a simple test about what’s in it.

progressoverpeace on May 21, 2009 at 7:44 PM

Wait wait wait, can you repeat that? But slower?

FontanaConservative on May 21, 2009 at 7:40 PM

Again, disingenuous criticism.

The bill can be accessed directly online by anyone. Here is a link for you.

The reason why a speedreader is needed is because of stupid stalling tactics that waste time in the hopes of shooting down this bill.

Instead of making snarking noises why don’t you come up with an alternative to getting us off of oil?

“Don’t reserve your contempt for them.”

That smug look on Waxman’s face just made me defecate……..

…… The Democrats have spent the last six years doing everything that they could to get back into power,

Lie, cheat, steal, give away State Secrets, undermine the war effort, call our soldiers “murderers”, turn National Security into a “Political” issue, bureaucratic resistance, allies in the Media and Hollywood spreading propaganda seen all over the world, under cut the economy with the Community Reinvestment Act, hide the truth from the American people, electronic run on the banks right before the election as a catalyst to destroy trillions in savings………

…….. anything and everything just to regain power.

And when they get it, what do they do with it…….?

…….. Allah already hit the highlights, but to hear Waxman and the boys yucking it up fills me with a rage that I did not know I could feel.

The airwaves are filled with this stuff……..

……… it is my only hope that the opposition party is taking notice and putting together political ads to flush the toilet on these political elites once and for all!

Del Dolemonte on May 21, 2009 at 8:02 PM

The difference between Obama and Carter is that Obama believes that after thirty years of left wing hippies monopolizing our popular culture, the American people are ready to embrace socialism. The problem is, during that same period, we’ve had Presidents who governed either as centrists or conservatives, with Carter being the lone exception. We’ve also absorbed a huge wave of hard working, ambitious immigrants, mostly from various parts of Asia, who aren’t the least bit interested in “White guilt”. Let’s see if the American people are ready to walk the socialist walk, as opposed to just talking the socialist dinner party talk.

ardenenoch on May 21, 2009 at 8:02 PM

So does this make the speed readers our representatives? Nothing like adding a layer of deniability, huh? “What? That was in there? My speed reader must’ve left that out.”

The point is that you don’t need to waste time reading a bill after you have fully debated the bill and the said bill is available for viewing by all parties involved.

Care to link to some evidence? I’m betting I can show the opposite.

Instead of making snarking noises why don’t you come up with an alternative to getting us off of oil?

ckoeber on May 21, 2009 at 7:46 PM

Who’s mind should we enslave in order to produce the alternative energy ckoeber? Who’s? Yours? Mine? By what right do you have to demand an alternative to oil? By your genius? By someone else’s? So greater minds than yours should be enslaved by lesser minds in order to produce for them alternatives to oil? Why not ask yourself what are you doing to get us off oil? Last time I checked, the world is not holding back your genius? Get to it boy! The world is waiting.

Free markets can do it if allowed…and you are still free last time I checked….for the moment

javamartini on May 21, 2009 at 8:36 PM

Just like you wouldn’t expect your mechanic to go over every possible detail regarding the vehicle repair AFTER you already understand and agreed to everything.

ckoeber on May 21, 2009 at 8:31 PM

You can not seriously be implying that most of the congress critters know anything remotely like everything that is in these bills, before, during or after the fact. Now, I would give you that practically all of them know what parts are in it for them, but that is a whole different matter.

MB4 on May 21, 2009 at 8:38 PM

Ahead: stagflation and economic disaster beyond comprehension.

2010 and 2012 are going to be about who voted for the disaster and who is promising to repeal it.

Peak oil was supposed to be upon us in ’55 then ’79 then ’84…. Every time they find a new supply they always under-estimate the yield. Oil is good and we have curbed pollutants produce from using it. So much so that they had to find a new ‘Boogeyman’ in the air we exhale.

thomasaur on May 21, 2009 at 8:41 PM

How much is this costing us? Is Waxman using stimulus money?

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on May 21, 2009 at 8:41 PM

The point is that you don’t need to waste time reading a bill after you have fully debated the bill and the said bill is available for viewing by all parties involved.

ckoeber on May 21, 2009 at 8:31 PM

Dude, the first part of that sentence refutes the second part of the sentence. Now you’re just arguing with yourself. (psssst I think you’re losing.)

Weight of Glory on May 21, 2009 at 8:43 PM

I didn’t think it was possible to be more embarrassed by my elected officials than I was when they passed the $787bil without reading it. But, this tops it.
Is there a place where we can simply surrender our citizenship cards? Cuz, I am done.

Do you mean like nuclear plants that Dems won’t allow to be built? Or how about the off shore wind turbines that Dems won’t allow to be put up anywhere they might hurt birds or interfere with yatching? Or how about the latest Sen Feinstein saying that solar panels cannot be put in the desert in her district because it mess up the vibe of how it is suppose to look.

ckoeber on May 21, 2009 at 8:28 PM

Total BS.

The FDA does not keep down food costs. Their mandate is more about safety than cost. E.G., making sure the meat isn’t spoiled and there isn’t too much rat hair in your grain.

Try again.

Or, in the case of Teddy Kennedy, RUIN HIS VIEW.

Liberals are the ultimate alternative energy NIMBYs.

It’s hilarious that liberals like ckoeber actually believe we can somehow “get off oil”

Should be required reading for anyone talking about alternative energy.

As the guy being interviewed by reason says:

I consider myself a liberal mugged by the laws of thermodynamics

I’m sorry liberals. As Scotty says: You cannae break the laws of physics

We know the gutter and we know the stink of the street
For too many years now we have pressed through their festering heat
All those toadies who lorded above us
Those who gave us the smack of their rod
Soon now we will give them the gutter
We will give them the judgment of God!

When they gaze on our Goddess of Justice
With her shimmering, glimmering blade
As she kisses them she will sing them a last serenade

Soon now our lady will possess them
In her breathtaking, hair-raising bed
She will tingle their spines
As she captures their hearts and their heads

When the leaders of the House of Representatives openly mock and deride the rules which are supposed to govern their behavior, what does this teach the average citizen?

Jugears is an empty suit.

bullseye on May 21, 2009 at 9:02 PM

I, Tuco Ramirez, will tell you something. Those politicians think they are better than I am. Where I came from, if one did not want to have to do actual work for a living, one became a politician or a bandit. They chose their way, I chose mine. Mine was harder! I don’t remember for how long, but I tried the political path! I tried, but it was no good! My standards may be low but I do have some standards. Now I am going to tell them something… they became politicians because they are too cowardly to do what I do.

Tuco on May 21, 2009 at 9:07 PM

I want this CRAP & TAX to pass!! It will be worth $3000 a year to watch the democrats squirm and lose their jobs….

Should be a landslide for conservatives in 2010….

If they grow some balls.

The next President with a conservative congress should have no trouble rolling this CRAP & TAX back. This will BE THE ISSUE come 2010.

Democrats are as stupid as they look (Waxman)….

ckoeber on May 21, 2009 at 8:31 PM

Well, the great news is that now my mechanic CHECKS THE AIR IN MY TIRES.. Yep, he didn’t know to do that until jug-ears told him to do it. He said “Damn thay guy is smart. I HAVE to vote for him. What a great energy policy. ‘put air in your tires and get a tune up’. HORRY CLAP BATMAN.”. Well, listening to my mechanic, I began to see the immense wisdom of oabma.. I mean hell, that lady from alaska was just a mayor. It’s not like she was governor of one of the largest energy producing states or anything. I mean, heck, negotiating pipeline deals with the moose lovers in canada.. phsaw… fooey.. Dealing with the oil companies in alaska.. That ain’t nothing compared to the wisdom of blowing your tires.

Now, we find out he is an AUTOMOTIVE GENIUS… He is going to singlehandedly change the face of he auto industry. We will all be driving PEOPLES CARS!!! WOW!!!! I can’t think of another leader ever who was able to design a PEOPLE’S KAR…!!! he is truly amazing. Heck, it will be a true Volks Vagen.

ANyway it is wonderful that he will use crap and trade to redistribute our wealth to those third world leaders who are struggling so hard to help their people.. ie the Castros, Hugo Chavez, Robert Mugabe etc… Wow.. I am really looking forward to my family sitting if a forty degree house during the winter… YEssiree!!

I’m willing to sacrafice for Barak by seeing my loved ones squished and shredded in one of those clown cars… all for the greater glory of O.

Gotta go and have my family sing the Obama Hymn
