Helen Thomas on Katie Couric’s Palin interviews: “She saved the country”

This was one of her lines at last night’s roast of Couric, but I don’t think she’s joking. Leave it to Aunt Bethany to miss the point of the evening, just like she’s been missing the point of asking useful, probative questions at the daily White House presser for decades. There’s an interesting admission buried here: Is she implying that McCain/Palin would have won but for the Couric trainwreck? I’ve never heard anyone on either side seriously suggest that. I guess it takes years of taking up space in the briefing room, muttering questions about Israel, to develop that sort of political acuity.
Axelrod joined in on the fun with Palin too, of course:
Most punch lines included ratings, Sarah Palin and colonoscopies– or an odd combination of the three…
“People were surprised by the intensity of that interview with Sarah Palin, but I wasn’t. To me, it made perfect sense. After all, Katie has made it her civic responsibility to conduct public colonoscopies. But I’m sure that will be the butt of a lot of jokes tonight.” -Axelrod
I wonder how Katie feels knowing that her long career in TV news will likely be most remembered for (a) having her colon examined on camera and (b) asking the question, “So, what do you like to read?” Oh — you’ll be pleased to know that Huckabee was there too, laughing along. Which, given his perspective on the Couric/Palin interview, isn’t a surprise.

If one had never heard of Sarah Palin before, all one would need to know to understand how good she would be for America is that Helen Thomas hates her.

Too bad someone hasn’t saved us from Helen…
She’ll probably die in that seat of hers at the White House and no one will know the difference.

Helen Thomas is completely right! I feel so much safer with Joe Biden as Vice President. Whew!

When an esteemed doyenne who been on the earth 80 years falls for the demagoguery of Obama is there any wonder that women 50 years younger fawn over Obama and if it weren’t were Michelle would be his personal slave.
And of course with this segment of the population Sarah Palin is really dangerous and if she were the VP under McCain she would destroy America and do 100 times more to damage America than the idiot Joe Biden has.

Pretty powerful stuff. Not her achievement, obviously. She was at the right place at the right time. But still.

Seven Percent Solution on May 21, 2009 at 7:04 PM
In a way from a long-term point of view Helen Thomas may be right. Because McCain was defeated, the conservatives have been presented a righteous argument to rebrand the Republican party. With McCain in office that would not have been possible; in addition Sarah Palin would have been tied at the hip with McCain and her Reagan conservatism obscured by McCain’s RINO agenda.
In 2012 Sarah will be able to run free of McCain and his maverick ideas, help to rebrand the Republican party as a conservative party and finally maybe defeat Obama and save America.
Perhaps Helen you will eventually be right.
technopeasant on May 21, 2009 at 7:05 PM
So Axelrod’s “joke” about Carrie Prejean being a dog was just a warm-up.
Don’t quit your day job, Dave. Wait, what am I saying? Quit your day job. Just don’t go into stand-up.

Go away! You’ve had your 60 years, let some one else have a shot at the briefing room, preferably a hot conservative gal, like S.E. Cupp! There, that’s a better image in my head.
Brian1972 on May 21, 2009 at 7:46 PM
Palin is a true conservatives. She just vetoed over 28 million in stimulus money that the alaksan dems really wanted. Also slashed over 80 million from next years budget.

cs89 on May 21, 2009 at 7:50 PM
It was the same with Dan Quayle. It’s always the people who have absolutely no room to talk who end up throwing the stones.
Think about it, there are an awful lot of people (on both sides of the aisle) who go through their whole lives being ridiculed. But the only people significantly dumber than them are institutionalized, and therefore off limits.
Then, all of a sudden they’re told by all of their closest personal friends in the world, from Big Bird to Oprah: “It is now socially acceptable for YOU to call someone ’stupid.’”
Why would we be surpised to see a feeding frenzy? It’s like offering a five-star banquet to someone who’s lived his whole life on the verge of starvation.

One of the problems with this country is we pay attention to idiots like Helen Thomas. Who gives a rat’s backside what the wormy old skag thinks?

So Couric’s interview skills apparently saved the US from having an idiot for a Vice President…Hang on a minute if that’s true then how did Joe Biden get past Couric’s superior journalistic abilities?
The funny thing about Couric is the fact that she is the perfect embodiment of a journalist who is more concerned about their own celebrity and social status then actually the getting to the bottom of major stories and reporting facts.

At some point WE become the “counter-culture” and the cool ones.
And when that happens – the lefty establishment and their whores in the propaganda ministry will be hated.
Such is the way of things – ebb and flow – expansion and contraction. You cannot destroy an idea – especially when it’s a very a good idea – it tends to reach across time and convince people.
The fall will be hard for these fools.
