Four arrested in NYC terror plot

posted at 8:16 am on May 21, 2009 by Allahpundit

I don’t get it. Who’d want to blow up Jewish temples and shoot down U.S. military aircraft? Oh, right.

The suspects were arrested shortly after planting a mock explosive device in the trunk of a car outside the Riverdale Temple and two mock bombs in the backseat of a car outside the Jewish Center, authorities said.

Cromitie is the son of an Afghani immigrant and his African-American wife. It is that connection to Afghanistan, investigators say, and an unhappiness with America’s ongoing war efforts abroad that allegedly drove him to become a terrorist.

In their efforts to obtain weapons, the defendants dealt with an informant acting under law enforcement supervision, and the FBI and other agencies monitored the defendants’ actions up to the time of arrest, including providing an inactive missile and inert explosives to the informant for the defendants. The Feds told CBS 2 HD’s Lou Young they picked up the inert weapons at a meeting in Stamford, Conn., and during the last few days secured small arms, including assorted handguns…

In talking to the FBI informant, Cromitie expressed interest in one day returning to Afghanistan, of dying a “martyr” and wanting to do “something to America”. When discussing the best targets, Cromitie allegedly told the infomant, “the best target (the World Trade Center) was hit already. When the conversation turned to attacking a synagogue, Cromitie allegedly said, “I hate those Jewish “expletie.” I would like to get a synagogue.

The suspects, according to the LA Times: “James Cromitie, also known as Abdul Rahman; David Williams, or Daoud; Onta Williams, or Hamza; and Laguerre Payen, or Amin.” The cops think they’re freelancers, unconnected to any terrorist group. They all have rap sheets for petty crimes, so speculation is that they got together through prison contacts. I wonder which of them, if any, were jailhouse converts.

The most interesting detail about the arrest is how far the cops let the plot proceed, to the point of letting them actually plant fake bombs in cars outside the temple. I’m sure that’s deliberate: There’s nothing new about police selling weapons to would-be jihadis to generate the “overt act” requirement for a conspiracy charge — that’s what sunk the Fort Dix Six — but the earlier the plot is busted up, the harder it is to convince a jury that the suspects really meant to do harm rather than just shoot their mouths off idly about some half-assed desire for jihad. (See, e.g., the Sears Tower case.) The NYPD took a calculated risk here; imagine the public outcry if the suspects had ditched the bomb plot at the last second and instead rushed into the temple with guns blazing. Thank god it worked out.

I’m 96% sure these are Obama voters who are not satisfied with the pace of “hope and change”.

Cromitie is the son of an Afghani immigrant and his African-American wife.

This is one problem with politically correct racial identification. Was she really African, possibly with ties to overseas radicals, or was she of several generations of American blood with dark skin?

I guess all that apologizing by Obama didn’t accomplish much.

I wonder which of them, if any, were jailhouse converts.

Isn’t that what Ace (and jgapinoy above) is saying: Cromitie was of Afghani descent and was upset about American intrusion in Afghanistan, the other three were jailhouse converts. Which makes a perfect analogy for what might happen if the U.S. were to mix Gitmo terrorists into the general prison population.

Obviously these four were zionist agents who were attempting to discredit and bring disrepute upon the most glorious and peaceful religion of the world Islam. Their non islamic actions have nothing to do with jihad, which is a term that only a neo zionist like Commissioner Kelly would use to describe those non islamic acts. Indeed, everyone knows that jihad is like buddhist yoga practices, meant only for developing inner peace and spiritual enlightenment. Anyone who says otherwise is an islamophobe xenophobic bitter bible clutching redneck cousin marrying fool. /sarcasm.

As for me, I commend the NYC Police Department and FBI for this work. I hope the case is brought in federal court, because if the feds or NYC PD used warrantless GPS device(s) to track the movements of these genocidal maniacs, the NYS Courts might be mandated under the recent NYS Court of Appeals ruling to exclude evidence based upon insertion of such GPS device(s) without such warrant. Also interesting that the arrest is one the eve of Obama’s national security speech (which was scheduled to take the attention away from former VP Cheney’s AEI speech this am), and the day after the Senate rebuked the Obama Administration on closing GITMO.

an unhappiness with America’s ongoing war efforts abroad that allegedly drove him to become a terrorist.

Uh… isn’t this why Gibbs said Gitmo has to be closed? So as not to be a rallying call for our enemies? I hope O&co or at least America wakes up to the fact that you can’t always make everyone happy and sometimes you just have to do what’s right.

2) I wonder how O&co is going to modify their response/solution to the Democrats not funding Gitmo-Closing? I was pretty sure he could have found some rubbish to say, but this puts things in a new light.

On the bright side, since Barack “Lee Iacocca” Obama has now ramped up the CAFE standards, the chances of a successful car bombing have greatly decreased, because all future vehicles will be too small to hold any explosives and will be in the shop most of the time for repairs.

Genius!

Any bets that Dick Cheney will be mentioning this incident in his upcoming speech?

Obama, on the other hand, will probably avoid this issue like the plague. Not that the media will even ask him a question about it, however.

Olbermann will probably scoff and use the word “teabag” 20 times or more to fill up his show, while deeming Cheney the “Worst person in the Woooorld”.

Nancy Pelosi will blame the CIA for not stopping the incident sooner, and that she was left in the dark about it.

Things Cheney should mention in his speech:

Key word about the Obama Admin: Naivety

The four terrorists and how there are many more we have yet to discover.

The war on terror is not over, despite the Glowbama effect.

1 in 7 Gitmo detainees released go back to Jihad, and how Obama will not tell you that.

The Dems may not say it, but they want to release all the Gitmo detainees, and Obama will eventually have his way. And, by the way, they will probably come to live in the USA and collect Welfare benefits.

Ahh yes, celebrate our diverse multiculturalism and the benefits that people of color & new cultures are bringing to this country.

What the left and much of the right are afraid to articulate is that our country and culture was founded primarily by western european, white, family oriented, judeochristian and entrepreneural values. Countries having values counter to these find us offensive and are envious that their values are not producing the goodies they crave. So we, stupidly, invite them here and they, eagerly, come to get on the dole and bring their filth, perverted beliefs, immorality and laziness with them.

The case can also be made that we also brought on much of our troubles today when we got muddled in the slave trade. Now, generations later we are suffering for the sins of our fathers. The ACORNS don’t fall far from the tree.

On April 4, a neo-Nazi wannabe named Richard Poplawski murdered three Pittsburgh police officers with a high-powered assault rifle. By all accounts, Poplawski was an avid follower of right-wing talkers including Alex Jones and Glenn Beck who “grew angry recently over fears Obama would outlaw guns.”

In the wake of Poplawski’s massacre, the Department of Homeland Security issued a report warning of the mounting threat of “right-wing extremism.” “Heightened interest in legislation for tighter firearms control,” the DHS asserted, “may be invigorating right-wing extremist activity, specifically the white-supremacist and militia movements.” With its focus on right-wing gun culture, the report compounded the already palpable paranoia of gun-show enthusiasts. An organizer of the Antioch show told me the heightened specter of government scrutiny prompted numerous dealers to demand a total ban on cameras of any kind inside the show.

You don’t understand, do you?

In fact, you refuse.

People like McVeigh don’t have any groups with actual legs or influence backing them up.

The Islamists in this country have CAIR, ISNA, et.al. backing them, supporting them, and influencing policy at the highest level of government.

This is why they are infinitely more dangerous. A handful of angry people you mentioned are no match; not suitable for a comparison.

blatantblue on May 21, 2009 at 9:09 AM

Janet NapoloReno is still convinced that they were involved somehow.

jgapinoy on May 21, 2009 at 8:40 AM

Oh…I dunno….
Here is a presbyterian minister and pro-lifer that murdered a doctor and his driver.
Here is a veteran and survialist that killed a lot of Americans.
Here is a white supremacist gun-nut and Glenn Beck admirer that killed policemen.

I bet there are still a lot of people in Oklahoma that wish Tim McVeigh had been “detained”.

strangelet on May 21, 2009 at 9:05 AM

Yes, clearly everything you mentioned is involved in the NYC terrorist ring… It’s the Butterfly Effect… (that is the “theory” that keeps you up at night, right?)

Upstater85 on May 21, 2009 at 9:10 AM

What a tragedy it would be if these four goofs were tossed into Gitmo after being “kidnapped” off the streets in an “illegal” covert operation even though they were just “innocent balloon vendors” trying to “make a decent living” taking care of their “little kids.”

Jonknee, where for art thou?

blatantblue on May 21, 2009 at 9:06 AM

How many were against Americans that have resulted in the death toll of the Oklahoma City Federal building?
I’m not saying ignore islamic fundies targeting American targets.
We tend to catch them right, like the fundies that were targetting Camp Lejune and this bunch.
But that doesn’t diminish what army veteran Tim McVeigh did.
He killed a whole daycare full of preschoolers.
He killed 168 Americans.
Should he have been detained?

strangelet on May 21, 2009 at 9:13 AM

3 of them were jailhouse converts to Islam. Yeah lets put the detainees in our prisons. That is a great idea. Idiots.

Don’t know about last 10 years, but it’s 13,236 since 9/11/01.

He was executed, Ap stalker.

In the wake of Poplawski’s massacre, the Department of Homeland Security issued a report warning of the mounting threat of “right-wing extremism.”

Hey, any of you guys see the matching report about “left-wing extremists,” because I must have missed it. Then again perhaps there never was one which is why Nappy had to withdraw the report about the “right-wing.”

You would think they would have one for the left too, in the wake of the intended molotov cocktail attack during the GOP convention:

“”Court documents unsealed Wednesday said DePalma talked about ways to make the flammable liquid in his bombs stickier, so that it would adhere to the targets and burn longer and hotter. He told the source he wanted to attack police officers at the convention, saying, “I will light one of those pigs on fire,” the documents say.”"

Absolutely if there was any evidence he was going to do what he did.

My point was (it’s early) is yes, if there was any evidence that he was going to do what he did. However, he paid the ultimnate penalty for his actions. The guys in Gitmo are still breathing. How many of them are killers? How many Terrorists are still out there?

It doesn’t diminish anything, you’re right.

He should have been detained — you’re right.

But DHS is WRONG, dead wrong, for coming out with these ridiculous reports on “right-wing extremism” among army vets, as if it is some epidemic in America. Islamism in America is the real epidemic.

Of course counter-terrorism ops, domestically, should be broad with their work on things other than Islamism, but it is the primary threat, and it would behoove of the FBI, DHS, and other domestic agencies to focus on what is truly at the zenith of the threat nexus in the US — Islamism. Angry, white, military veterans should be completely secondary.

And I’d say the same thing about ELF, and other left-wing terror groups! They do not hold primacy over Islamism in the threat list, nor should they.

So to those on this thread mocking DHS, I’m with you.

blatantblue on May 21, 2009 at 9:19 AM

Hmmmm, these wannabe jihadists don’t fit Napalitano’s terror list profile. That particular demographic was not included.
Amazing.

Nope, I just object that you guys try to spin the DHS report as unjust persecution while slavering for increased surveillance of Islamic fundies.
I just happen to think that ALL proto-assassins and incipient bombers should be detained, whether they are army vet Tim McVeigh or ex-con James Cromitie.
Cognitive dissonance is endemic in the GOP.

right2bright on May 21, 2009 at 9:22 AM

Same song, 100000th verse. The perps’ backgrounds, the plot, the left-wing denials. All of it.

Dark-Star on May 21, 2009 at 9:24 AM

Have you considered….the purpose of the DHS report has been executed, and that is why it was withdrawn?
That Americans have had their consciousness raised on right wing extremists, and the extremists have been served notice they are being monitored.
Jus’ sayin’.

First, I don’t recall specifically saying that we should increase surveillance of Islamic Fundies…

Second, there is a difference between an American citizen and a non-American citizen (as if the labels don’t point this out). So if your argument is with intercepting information from another country vs this country, well, there is something called the Constitution – it does form our laws for AMERICAN citizens.

I can agree with you on this, if there is sufficient evidence that an American citizen is a soon to be assassin, then they should probably be arrested and tried.
