Four arrested in NYC terror plot

I don’t get it. Who’d want to blow up Jewish temples and shoot down U.S. military aircraft? Oh, right.
The suspects were arrested shortly after planting a mock explosive device in the trunk of a car outside the Riverdale Temple and two mock bombs in the backseat of a car outside the Jewish Center, authorities said.
Cromitie is the son of an Afghani immigrant and his African-American wife. It is that connection to Afghanistan, investigators say, and an unhappiness with America’s ongoing war efforts abroad that allegedly drove him to become a terrorist.
In their efforts to obtain weapons, the defendants dealt with an informant acting under law enforcement supervision, and the FBI and other agencies monitored the defendants’ actions up to the time of arrest, including providing an inactive missile and inert explosives to the informant for the defendants. The Feds told CBS 2 HD’s Lou Young they picked up the inert weapons at a meeting in Stamford, Conn., and during the last few days secured small arms, including assorted handguns…
In talking to the FBI informant, Cromitie expressed interest in one day returning to Afghanistan, of dying a “martyr” and wanting to do “something to America”. When discussing the best targets, Cromitie allegedly told the infomant, “the best target (the World Trade Center) was hit already. When the conversation turned to attacking a synagogue, Cromitie allegedly said, “I hate those Jewish “expletie.” I would like to get a synagogue.
The suspects, according to the LA Times: “James Cromitie, also known as Abdul Rahman; David Williams, or Daoud; Onta Williams, or Hamza; and Laguerre Payen, or Amin.” The cops think they’re freelancers, unconnected to any terrorist group. They all have rap sheets for petty crimes, so speculation is that they got together through prison contacts. I wonder which of them, if any, were jailhouse converts.
The most interesting detail about the arrest is how far the cops let the plot proceed, to the point of letting them actually plant fake bombs in cars outside the temple. I’m sure that’s deliberate: There’s nothing new about police selling weapons to would-be jihadis to generate the “overt act” requirement for a conspiracy charge — that’s what sunk the Fort Dix Six — but the earlier the plot is busted up, the harder it is to convince a jury that the suspects really meant to do harm rather than just shoot their mouths off idly about some half-assed desire for jihad. (See, e.g., the Sears Tower case.) The NYPD took a calculated risk here; imagine the public outcry if the suspects had ditched the bomb plot at the last second and instead rushed into the temple with guns blazing. Thank god it worked out.

Come on, people: those of us on the left have plenty of legitimate reasons to criticize us for. Supporting terrorism is not one of them. Grow up and get serious about your politics.

Odd. The real terrorists are Bush and Cheney – or so the residents of NYC repeatedly told me. So now they’re gone and yet they are still arresting terror suspects? That just don’t make no sense yo!

Strange, you might have an argument if there was a “right wing” extremist “attack” on the US withing the last few years. I’m also letting you label McVeigh as a “right-winger” – though you’d have to agree he’s no Bill Kristal Right Winger…

and DHS’ll get around to nabbing those world bank protestors and ELF anyday now right stranger?

Hey,
What did the people of Idaho ever do to you?
MarkTheGreat on May 21, 2009 at 9:31 AM
Have you considered….the purpose of the DHS report has been executed, and that is why it was withdrawn?
Ah yes, the “My opponent may be the kind of guy who beats his wife” report that gets withdrawn a few days later; full of shiite but the damage is done.
So when do we get our awareness raised about left-wing extremists, you know, the kind of people who who threaten bank executives, plan fire bomb attacks and issue declarations of war against the U.S. government?

That argument is juvenile. Thats like if they put out a report about how bears are terrorists and there haven’t been any terrorist acts by bears since the report came out, then the bears must have gotten the message that they are being monitored. Jus’ sayin.

I’m glad that the battle lines are finally being drawn as the current clown-shoe administration starts to identify its real “enemies.”
Bishop on May 21, 2009 at 9:37 AM
You your opponent has run out of facts when they have to start lying.
1) Declaring that all returning veterans are potential terrorists is unjust persecution.
Declaring that all opponents of the govt are potential terrorists is unjust persecution.
2) Nobody here has called for increased surveilance of all Islamic fundamentalists.

it’ll make it a lot easier to justify resistance when you can point to Janet’s Fatwa…

Hoping Obama fails (so America succeeds) just became very logical!

Wow, the Leftist squirrels are out in force here this morning. Of course, that’s because they just got out of college for the summer.
Speaking of NYC and terror threats, O’bama has decided to re-open the crown on the Statue of Liberty, which was closed to the public after 9/11. For those who have been in the crown, you know that it involves climbing up a narrow helix staicase in the center of the statue. Then you descend the stairway on the other side of the helix.
Under the new “plan”, only 10 tourists at a time will be allowed to climb to the crown. Each group of 10 will be allowed 20 minutes for their ascent and descent, and all groups will include a NPS Ranger as a guide. This means only 30 people an hour will be able to see NYC from the crown.
Will the bad guys try something? Stay tuned.

Anyone want to guess what Obama is going to say today about the lack of funding for Gitmo? The reason there is no funding, is because no-one wants these savages in their backyards. So, what’s Obama’s Plan? Send them all to NYC?
Upstater85 on May 21, 2009 at 9:45 AM
HA!!! I was right!
In spite of lawmakers’ concerns, the administration plans to send a top al-Qaida suspect held at Guantanamo Bay to New York to stand trial for the deadly 1998 bombings of U.S. embassies in Africa, Attorney General Eric Holder announced early Thursday. The suspect, Ahmed Ghailani, would be the first Guantanamo detainee brought to the U.S. and the first to face trial in a civilian criminal court.

Here we go again. Persons of a certain RELIGION trying to blow up and shoot down innocents in the U.S. While liberal leaders downplay and chastise us all for even thinking the truth.

New York’s mayor urged the public not to attack people based on stereotypes. I’m betting he was fearing a backlash against Muslims, and ignoring the fact that a bunch of people were targeting synagogues.
This plot shows the problem of dealing with terrorism as a legal matter. The police had to let the plot unfold in order to collect enough evidence to send the victims to jail. Even now, I’m sure many people will mock the ability of these jihadists, saying things like “they can’t even tell if they have real C-4 or not”.
hawksruleva on May 21, 2009 at 10:09 AM
Another interesting facet of this case is that at least one of the perps picked up his jihadist inclination while in prison.
I wonder how tossing a bunch of terrorists into our prison population will affect that. Do you think we’ll get more jihadists coming out of jails, or less, as a result?
hawksruleva on May 21, 2009 at 10:10 AM
Why are folks talking about the DHS report on this thread? Yes, Napolitano and DHS screwed up there. But this isn’t about who might be a jihadist, it’s about who IS a jihadist.
Unless you’re arguing that DHS should consider paying more attention to people who actually do want to kill Americans, and less attention to political boondoggle. In which case, this is the perfect place to do it.
hawksruleva on May 21, 2009 at 10:14 AM
Let’s just inject them with some pig’s blood and send them back to their muslim communities, and let them deal with these guys.
The muslims would deal them a worse fate than we ever could, knowing that they are not worthy of entering nirvana with pig in their veins.
UltimateBob on May 21, 2009 at 10:27 AM
Wait so these guys wern’t returning veterans?
Ultimatebob it would be easier to drop them off in Arabia and just say that they are gay.

Maybe Janet will have to change the profile of terrorists.
Do we see her naming people like these as neding to go on the list?
No???

strangelet:
Well, at least you admit your problems…
True,a nd those are both sad and sickening.
However, it is worth noting that just because a few right-wing kooks have gone off the deep end to commit the inexcusable, is there a vast web of these people throughout the globe funded by foreign money and engaged in a multi-dozen thousand casualty war with us?
This is not an unimportant distinction.
True, but that is not answering the issue, and has little to do with the topic.
And given the ludicrously broad wording of the report and the fact that many benign or innocent individuals would qualify as a threat under it, would you justify a report on ISLAMIC EXTREMISTS with similar characteristics?
I await your reponse
True, but how the HELL do we sort out the McVeighs and the Cromities from the rest? It isn’t easy.
PotKettleBlack.
Yes I have.
Oh really, and is Joe DiBaggio, lifetime NRA member, ex-Vietnam protester, and invalid in a wheelchair a “right wing extremist” or a threat?
I don’t object to the DHS memo in theory- after all, crackpots of such a sort may be far outnumbered by many others, but they are still around- but the broad and ludicrously discriminatory phrasing would NEVER be tolerated on other issues, and should not be allowed here.
Oh yes, and I await your responses.
factoid:
The irony of your “list”- and the fact that I actually refuse to discriminate against half of them and that the other half actually HAVE, on occasion, pulled tripe like this- is ludicrous.
Yes, it is true that none on the list were responsible, but some on the list have hindered our ability to stop similar threats from happening.
I suggest you sober up and come back when you have an argument to use.

RightWinged on May 21, 2009 at 11:59 AM
I suppose that this new plan will allow 30 people the golden opportunity to see a reprise of Scare Force One, a bird’s eye view, if you will.
I find Bloomberg’s remarks in the video ironic, given his downplaying of the threat of terrorisim. Which is it? Don’t worry, or be vigilant?
onlineanalyst on May 21, 2009 at 12:09 PM
So some Muslims go through with carrying out a terrorist attack in New York (only thwarted by the fakeness of their weapons) and the first thing RINO Bloomberg says is “beware of stereotypes.”
Nothing more needs to be said.

Well I sure hope the NYC police and FBI said their pleases and thank yous when they took the alleged suspects into custody and that their lawyers were in the back seats of the patrol vehicles to make sure the po-lice didn’t violate any of their rights. We wouldn’t want to sacrifice our principles and throw them to the ground and cuff ‘em too tightly or anything.
Limerick on May 21, 2009 at 3:42 PM
Am I to understand that the feds knowingly sold these guys fake bombs and tricked them into disclosing their plans, just to save American lives? So much for the moral high ground. I don’t care what information they gave up. You don’t knowingly sell faulty merchandise and embarrass people. We’re better than that.
