Did Christians win “American Idol” for Kris Allen?

posted at 8:12 pm on May 21, 2009 by Allahpundit

If they did, it’s the first big election they’ve won in a long time.

Mild-mannered Christian versus flamboyant gay star in a pageant setting? There’s something soooo familiar about this. Presumably this means Allen will be the tabloids’ new hate object, victimized by all appropriate smears and embarrassing family revelations pertaining thereto. Adam Lambert’s loss is Carrie Prejean’s gain!

“Adam has the potential to be a star so overall you could say he deserves to win,” Simon Cowell told Tarts on Wednesday afternoon. “But this is ‘American Idol,’ anything could happen and we could have an upset.”

And an upset for Cowell it clearly was — the outspoken judge was the only one not to give Allen a standing ovation when he was announced the 2009 winner as determined by a record-breaking 100 million votes…

According to an ‘Idol’ insider, support for Kris most likely surged over the last week when Danny Gokey (who was extremely open about his involvement with the church) was voted off and thus Christians turned their full devotion to Allen who epitomizes the all-American, talented and moralistic role model.

An alternate theory: In an age of economic panic, the public longs for the soothing presence of a soft-spoken dork with a guitar.

A better argument can be made that we had a moment—when 100 million people vote for something, it’s bigger than a singing contest—that harkens to back to Nixon’s Silent Majority speech 40 years ago. “There’s a certain restiveness in Americans in times of uncertainty,” top Democratic pollster Doug Schoen told me minutes after the Allen vote. “People may well make decisions that aren’t obvious and clear. They’re opting for a choice they think is safe, less risky.” In other words, with the economy roiling, the role of government shifting, the banking and auto industries in freefall, the definition of marriage in flux and a health-care overhaul on deck, many feel good dialing and texting on behalf of an aw-shucks strummer from Conway, Arkansas. Bob Dylan and The Jefferson Airplane made headlines in the ’60s, but Pat Boone and Henry Mancini sold more records…

There’s some good news in our data for those hoping to avoid a repeat of Nixon-era divisions. Yes, the Blue State/Red State correlations largely held up: 11 of the 12 states that delivered Lambert the most votes, based on the Daily Beast’s projections, went Democrat in 2008, while Allen overperformed in the Republicans’ states. But it was interesting to see how relatively competitive Allen ran in Pennsylvania and Massachusetts, while Lambert held his own in Texas and Georgia. The red and blue states might indeed already be Obama-era purple states, when it comes to music.

I’ve never watched the show but nearly all the chatter online that I’ve stumbled across held that Lambert was by far the greater talent. Tell the truth, “Idol” fans, did he get gypped? If so, why are they letting the public vote weigh so heavily in the final competition? It’s the California budget initiative redux: If you have people around who get paid to make these decisions, there’s no sense dumping it in the public’s lap at the moment of truth.

for all the flamboyancy that gets really offputting (and thats coming from a bisexual), i cant imagine lambert losing over a legit talent issue. he lost because he couldnt compete with southern fried married christian boy who’s basically just john mayer without the writing chops.

As someone who watched two episodes of this season, because I was with my folks — Lambert may have been more talented, but he was also just plain annoying, IMO. Plus he was so obviously the judges’ darling that I was pleased to hear Allen won, because I think Simon and co need to be reminded of the nature of this beast they’ve created.

The musician with talent won the contest…..

Boring show. Last time it was interesting was when they had Melinda.

promachus on May 21, 2009 at 8:20 PM

They both won.

I did have enough of Lambert’s screaming and drama.

Good for Allen. He seems very talented and seems to be a good humble man. After this Presidency I think a little humility from a celeb would be a great thing.

Real america is not nearly as enamored of ‘glam’ and guyliner as the media.
I suppose that there will always be a market for the ‘female impersonator’ type of entertainment- but to believe that the majority of americans pine for (or will pay for) over the top ‘birdcage’cabaret stuff – not gonna happen.

Cultural and political eventa as of late… have caused a great awakening of the silent and the Christian majority. It seems that majority has decided enough is enough.

Tired of having the a-moral crap that has pagued our world for the last several decades and benn shoved down our throats, they are stirring for a very interesting battle.

Looks like it’s time to get back to basics and Allen and his win is a shinning example.

ARKANSAS won American Idol for Chris Allen

the local tv news reported that 38 MILLION of the 100 million cast came from Arkansas…

which isn’t surprising.

every single person i know in Arkansas was watching it. most girls on twitter and facebook from Arkansas were talking about voting 1,000 times.

the local newspaper and tv told Arkansas people each week how to vote multiple times (or, more precisely 10x for every at&t text message)

it was simply insane. church signs, fast food signs, banners on city halls, nightly tv news messages, all imploring the state to vote.

i had a buddy who texted me and said “this is the biggest thing in arkansas since bill clinton won the election”

i believe it. it’s the small states that rally around their kind, and as an Arkansan, I’ll tell you, there is something strange about our state love. We’re so battered by the rest of the country we cling to our own.

ARKANSAS won ‘idol’. Nothing else. even Kris downplayed the “Christian” thing the last few weeks, he said in an interview “it’s about talent, I don’t want to win for some church thing” –and this is a kid who’s done mission trips to Burma, Africa, etc.

Kiss it, Blue staters!!!!!!!!!

No doubt Lambert got “gypped”…not that Allen was a slouch, but yeah, Adam was by far the better and more versatile of the two.

Sure, Lambert is gay, but “flamboyant”? Lemme take ya out clubbing, AP…you ain’t seen flamboyant heh.

Eh…wouldn’t be the first time tho that the better singer didn’t win. Look back to Clay Aiken and Ruben Studdard. But wait…Clay was gay too…hmmm…

From Miss Cali to his constant pro-Glambert rants, he is turning the tide (and not in the way he wants)

I read his site every now and then, and it’s uncanny, ever since Miss California, how many commenters are tired of his “shtick”. There is a “ask perez 10 questions” thing on Time magazine’s website (google it), and out of 800 comments or so, it appears >75% are dealing with “why are you so intolerant/hateful/cruel when you say that you are tolerant about miss cali/adam lambert/etc”

JammieWearingFool on May 21, 2009 at 8:25 PM

I responded to some of this nonsense written today on a certain Lib site where no less than 3 separate articles claimed Adam Lambert’s loss was due to either homophobia, religion, or some combination of the two.

Here’s the same response I gave there:

Kris Allen’s win has to do with ‘listenability’. There is no doubt that Adam is amazingly talented and yes, has the greater stage presence and a stronger voice. One could even argue convincingly that if you were to put the two side by side for one performance & one vote, that Adam would win.

However, people I’ve spoken to are largely in agreement with my opinion that while Adam is perhaps the greater talent, he lacks any prolonged ‘listenability’. His loud rocking screams and ‘niche’ is fine for a while, but in the past few weeks I was growing tired of him. The glitz, the glam, the dry-ice smoke, the lighting, the whole thing. It was too much.

On the other hand, you had Kris Allen who consistently would place his own take on songs (as did Adam, but Kris did it without the same old 3-octave higher yell). Most everyone agreed with Randy Jackson’s comment that he actually performed a Kanye West song better…than Kanye West!

Before the final announcement, I told my wife that Kris would win – not because he’s a better talent, but because if I had to listen to a CD of either Kris or Adam all day at work, I’d choose Kris because I COULD listen to it all day. Adam’s music is great – but more people than not have to take it in measured doses.

Someone said – “Kris sounds like everything else on the radio”. My response was simple – “Exactly – that’s why he won. If THAT’S what’s on the radio – that’s what people are listening to.

Sigh… Adam has horrible. All he did was shriek and scream. He’s basically a gayer version of Scott Stapp of Creed (there I said it)

Seriously… who wants to drive in their car listening to SCREAMING?

No offense, but all my gay friends just “swear” that “adam is OBVIOUSLY the more talented one” and i point out the screaming part and then say “you only are pimping this kid because he’s gay and you feel obligated to root for the gay contestant”

None of the half-dozen had a coherent answer to that…… “identity” voting. “Tolerance!~!!!”

You got to love these reports and studies by liberals; there’s no freakin proof whatsoever besides innuendos and insinuations based on their own beliefs about themselves and others. There’s a new history book and study they are pushing about how Jamestown was full of gay marriage and gay lovers that has no proof but they’re running around like it the holy bible (no pun intended) because it supports their claims and their world view.

All it is is a convenient hammer that the left wants to hit conservatives in the head with.

Kris might well end up as a younger version of Michael W. Smith, though.

newton on May 21, 2009 at 8:27 PM

I didn’t vote, but if I had I would have voted for Kris, and I’m happy to see him win. They both have talent, but I did not find Adam’s glam-rock screeching (a la Robert Plant and other rock types) appealing in the least.

Also, considering Danny’s songs and style during the season, once Danny was eliminated, his fans were more likely to favor Kris than Adam.

I’ll be downloading a few Kris songs over the weekend (his version of Heartless was great).

diditagain on May 21, 2009 at 8:30 PM

Ever since this show started, I’ve never ever watched more than the final 5-10 minutes of a “results” show or the last 5-10 of the finale. I don’t know how people can stand it, I can barely make it through that. Ryan Seacrest and Simon are totally irritating, Paula is brain dead and the other two are not worth mentioning at all.

Marcus on May 21, 2009 at 8:32 PM

Okay, I’ll admit it, I enjoy watching the show. Wifey got me hooked on it.

Lambert is more talented, incredible range and over-the-top stage presence, but in his uniqueness he actually ended up being too cliche. His voice is perfect for 80s style glam rockers and I kept thinking that I’d heard/seen his like a thousand times before.

Simplicity is more versatile (see William Strunk’s “Rule 17″). I think the right guy won.

Except you just wasted a minute talking about how you haven’t wasted a minute….

For me the whole show boils down to this – I feel uneasy to seeing untalented people go on just to get shot down by self-important jerks like Simon (in the early weeks), and after they pick their cast, what’s the point? I get to hear about it from everyone else (with clips), including dubious political(!) analysis.

CWforFreedom on May 21, 2009 at 8:34 PM

I think it is difficult assess why people prefer one performer to another. I think we can all name good singers/performers that have been outsold in records with people with much lesser talents.

Some advice for Kris: He should probably get into the Christian music industry. They don’t pay the big bucks but it seems that the singers in the Christian music industry have longer careers. Christian radio won’t dump you because you turned 30.

CWforFreedom on May 21, 2009 at 8:35 PM

battleoflepanto1571 on May 21, 2009 at 8:26 PM

Uh, I don’t know about your gay friends, but me saying Adam was the better of the two has nothing to do with him being gay. He could have channeled Prejean on that stage, and I’d still say he was best.

So would countless people who watched IDOL from the beginning. But either way, the runner up in these things usually have better careers than the winners. David Archuleta was the better singer last year, but Cook won.

Anyway, best to both of ‘em. Before the beginning of the year, neither of them were known. Now, they’re both stars, with what could be big futures and fortunes.

JetBoy on May 21, 2009 at 8:36 PM

It had nothing to do with Christian/gay voters…blah blah blah. People liked him better. Nothing more or less. Anyone making more of this just needs to get out more. Adam has been very graceful in praising Kris and saying he deserved to win. Actually Adam is probably screaming with joy inside not to have that insipid “No Boundaries” song as his forced-upon debut single. I think both guys will do well. More power to them both. Lets not turn this into a silly partisan issue when its clearly not.

dcwvu on May 21, 2009 at 8:36 PM

This is really starting to piss me off. I voted for Adam a few times because he’s awesome talented and a treat to watch. The local pre-Rush time slot Evangelical radio host did the same for the same reason. So did the other local conservative guy. So did the third guy, a libertarian (I think). So did their side-kicks. So did about a zillion other Catholics of my acquaintance. But we were balanced out by pre-pubescent girls. Or people who like dorks with guitars. Or people who like midwesterners. Or the Idol demographic. Who knows? The only thing I KNOW is that it wasn’t a Christian vs. Gay grudge match and I’m tired of having to defend myself.

ernesto on May 21, 2009 at 8:38 PM

What I found amazing was how quickly the sides were drawn by people other than either of the singers. Allen didn’t wear his religion on his sleeve and Adam was never “out” there. Sure, he had on black nail polish and freaky hair, but so does the lead singer of Greed Day, and he’s married with kids…I think. People just need something to “talk” about.

Weight of Glory on May 21, 2009 at 8:39 PM

Danny should have won. Adam was good but would be best served singing for a “Queen” style band (he performed with them last night). He wasn’t for the masses, hence Kris winning.

txag92 on May 21, 2009 at 8:39 PM

The Disgruntled Danny Vote, plus Arkansans made this happen. Combine these groups with the apathy of the Adam Lambert fans that were probably overconfident that Adam would win, and you get what we got.

Danny was the best singer in the competition, without question. I’m a fan of the show, have watched it since Season 1. American Idol has become nothing more than a vehicle to make Simon Cowell lots of money (since it is his investment that started the show and he is the one that makes money off of the winners). It is NOT a “singing competition” as Randy anr Simon continue to tell America. Otherwise blind guy, tattoo girl and oil rig guy would have never made it to the finals; Jorge would have been in the top five, and Danny would have competed against Allison in the finals.

Adam is destined to Vegas, Broadway, or to front a band such as Queen, who could use a good, over the top, front man.

cannonball on May 21, 2009 at 8:40 PM

My guess is that American Idol’s fans have gotten older (inevitably, that is the either get older or the stop watching the show).

Who’s more likely to appeal to a woman in her 20s-30s, openly gay man or openly straight man? Do we have a gender break down, both who did women vote for and what percentage of voters were women?

doufree on May 21, 2009 at 8:42 PM

I think that his loss was also a backlash against Perez Hilton and the nasty maurauding gay mobs who attacked citizens for their donations to the Yes on 8 campaign etc…I’ve lost a lot of sympathy for homosexuals for that reason and for the fact that they are killing Palm Springs which used to be a fun place to go with the family. My girlfriend’s an Idol fan, which pretty much makes me an Idol fan.

Simon Cowell and the media said Lambert had more talent, so it was a meme, but not necessarily true.

In the last two weeks, I thought it was a toss-up. If any of the three had been voted off last week, I wouldn’t have been surprised, and the same with the two finalists this week. Anybody’s game to win, and I think they all performed about equally (although that wasn’t the case through the entire season).

For me, the thing about Lambert was his style. He has good control of his voice, but I think he’s screechy.

My girlfriend likes him because he looks like Elvis.

It’s hard to tell what is going to attract or repel the viewers in a close competition like this one was. Christian or gay had nothing to do with it.

IN My Humble Opinion, unless it’s Meghan Mc. and she is just describing herself.

thomasaur on May 21, 2009 at 9:08 PM

First of all, I question whether or not the darn thing is rigged. They claimed it was a record voting night but they recorded their lowest ratings ever for a finale so either the people who did tune in were so rabid about voting over four times each or someone is fudging the numbers.

Secondly, Lambert was such a shoe in I wonder if they allowed the Allen to win as an “upset” knowing that sort of thing plays well. Plus since Lambert was such a sure thing they can still make money on him and off Allen to as the “American Idol” In other words double up much the same way they did with Studdard and Aiken a few years back.

My wife watches this show, I don’t but I did see the final five mins last night and it struck me as odd that Allen won.

I didn’t realize it was a slow news day.

Did Christians win “American Idol” for Kris Allen?

Pretty scary and creepy if they did.

AprilOrit on May 21, 2009 at 9:10 PM

Front man [Lambert] as opposed to the rear man [for Queen]? -
Jamson64 on May 21, 2009 at 8:50 PM

Can’t we refrain from such remarks. Freddie Mercury was a fantastic talented performer.

Hey there is much more important news in Gay Hollywood.

Jamson64 on May 21, 2009 at 9:12 PM

I want to know if Perez Hilton will be releasing a fart bomb on the internet for us to talk about for the next three weeks.

Good for Kris Allen. Strike one for the majority of Americans.

txag92 on May 21, 2009 at 9:13 PM

kris was awesome! you must download his rendition of “heartless” from itunes. excellent. my sisters didn’t watch during this season but we watched the last ep together and they hearted kris too. not really sure how a girl could get into a dude who wears a full face of makeup and nailpolish and has hair like some south park goth wanna-be (adam). i’m glad kris won! he just had this thing about him that didn’t scream big broadway star like adam, he was just a great artist. i think he got the danny votes and that’s how he pulled it off.

anna on May 21, 2009 at 9:14 PM

I’ve never watched the show but nearly all the chatter online that I’ve stumbled across held that Lambert was by far the greater talent. Tell the truth, “Idol” fans, did he get gypped? If so, why are they letting the public vote weigh so heavily in the final competition? It’s the California budget initiative redux: If you have people around who get paid to make these decisions, there’s no sense dumping it in the public’s lap at the moment of truth

People who claim they never have seen the show are usually liars.

Beyond that, your comparison is absurd. There is zero connection between voting on tax increases and this bit of entertainment. Idol isn’t presenting an either/or situation. Both Kris and the Allah wannabe will have record deals out of this vote. If the judges had been in control, they would have awarded the prize to Adam in week two and called it a wrap even though the public, clearly, were freaked out by the better singer.

In the end it comes down to who will sell the most records. Clearly, the public is at odds with an arrogant Brit, a crazy loon, and a couple of other judges who fill out the stage.

anna on May 21, 2009 at 9:14 PM

Kris was good but he wasn’t the better singer by a long shot. The reality is that Adam and Kris attract completely different audiences and will launch their careers in completely different parts of the industry. If anything, Adam came out the winner because he won’t be forced to make his first single that God-awful tune the winner is forced to sing.

highhopes on May 21, 2009 at 9:19 PM

Ah, man. Does everything have to be politicized? Adam Lambert is the more talented artist, but Kris Allen was the more popular.

For anyone familiar with the show, you know that the best singer doesn’t always win, and there’s nothing wrong with that. That happens when 13 year-old girls control the vote.

They’ll both be successful, but less not pretend that this has anything to do with Adam being gay or Kris being a good Christian, or whatever the argument is.

Oh, does anyone remember Taylor Hicks? He won, too. Kris Allen is a much better singer than him.

sandman on May 21, 2009 at 9:21 PM

I think Danny will sell the most records.

terryannonline on May 21, 2009 at 9:23 PM

Both guys are great talents.
Adam is a seasoned pro, Kris is the underdog. America loves underdogs.
End of story.
This had nothing to do with sex nor religion.
Also, Simon did stand for Kris and he shook his hand during Kris’ performance at the end of the show.
Allah, you seriously need to watch the show. You missed your gal Lady Gaga this season. She had a weird but terrific performance several weeks ago.

Allen definitely is more top 40 thus it makes sense.

Politicized in the age of Obama ? You are just being silly.

Jamson64 on May 21, 2009 at 9:25 PM

Mild-mannered Christian versus flamboyant gay star in a pageant setting? There’s something soooo familiar about this. Presumably this means Allen will be the tabloids’ new hate object, victimized by all appropriate smears and embarrassing family revelations pertaining thereto. Adam Lambert’s loss is Carrie Prejean’s gain!

Hahaha… I haven’t even been following this, but now I understand the headlines (that I didn’t delve into). I didn’t get why people’s panties were in a bundle. Yeah, poor guy. He’s going to get the Prejean treatment…

Are we getting into Clintonian definitions of the word “seen” here?

If you are posting on this thread, you at the bare minimum have been exposed to the show on some level. How could you not? When Matt Giroud was in the running the paper in West Michigan was running his every week’s result on the front page above the fold (because the rest of the news is so damn bleak). Fact of the matter is the crowning of an American Idol victor has become a pop culture milestone. Are you honestly claiming that even by mistake or flinking through channels or watching the news; you have never seen one second of the show???

highhopes on May 21, 2009 at 9:26 PM

As long as it puts actors out of work, I’m down. Yay, what’s-his-name!

Upstater85 on May 21, 2009 at 9:26 PM

I hope not. Funny that other busty gay marriage hater gets off scott free yet they try to destroy Prejean.
